All Saints’ Episcopal Church 106 West Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701 REFRAINS: “WHAT’S IN A NAME?” What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet. (the balcony scene, Romeo and Juliet) Happy New Year! It’s time for new beginnings, even some changes – like remembering to write “2008.” When you read this, I will have enjoyed celebrating my first New Year’s in Frederick, while securing a temporary place to live and doing other things to prepare me for my move here later this month. (My first Sunday to worship with you will be February 3.) In the church, January 1 is celebrated as the Feast of the Holy Name – eight days after Jesus’ birth, a time when Jewish baby boys are named. “And he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb” (Luke 2:21). Names are important, usually given before birth. In Jesus’ time, they had great meaning and weight. In the New Year, there will be three All Saints’ clergy with the name “Thomas” – Deacon Tom Claggett; Father Tommy Rogers; and me. (Rumors that the church’s name will be changed to “St. Thomas” are greatly exaggerated.) All Saints’ is a large parish, so I think there’s room for lots of Toms, Ricks or Marys. Yet whenever new Episcopal clergy arrive, folks always ask the question: “What do we call him (or her)?” I’d like to tell you what the options have been historically, what they are now – and what I would prefer. (Those who just want the “bottom line” can skip to the last two paragraphs.) A quarter-century ago, when women were first becoming priests in the Episcopal Church, Eleanor McLaughlin and Julia Gatta wrote an article entitled “What do you call a woman priest?” They argued that “Mother” was the most appropriate form of address. Only "Mother," they concluded, "can most easily incorporate January 2008 [ordained] women into the ongoing tradition of the Church -- a tradition which has recognized the spiritual motherhood of saintly women and of the God whom they served" (Episcopal Times, October, 1981, p. 4). “Mother” works for some people, but not for those who, raised Catholic, would prefer to save that title for Mary or for nuns. Those raised Protestant, who typically call clergy “Reverend,” cite Holy Scripture: “Call no man ‘father’” (Matthew 23:9). “Such opposition,” one religion professor says, “is ironic in the context of church history…American Protestants regularly called their clergy ‘Father’ 200 and 300 years ago, and some continued to do so a century ago. And during the same years, Protestants addressed venerated women in their churches as ‘Mother’” (David L. Holmes, “Are ‘Mother’ and ‘Father’ Appropriate Titles for Protestant Clergy?” The Christian Century, December 4, 1985). “One title,” this professor suggests, “may stand out from the others: ‘Pastor.’ ‘Pastor’ is at once biblical, historical, gender-free, reflective of a deeply caring relationship, and consistent with Reformation teachings about priesthood and vocation. It is also the most ecumenical of all possible titles, being used by Christian clergy from storefront preachers to the pope” (ibid.). “Pastor” is the title commonly used by our Lutheran sisters and brothers. Even though the Episcopal Church is in full communion with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (of which our good friends at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick, are a part), we are still Episcopalians. “Pastor Tom” is just fine with me, but I would guess it does not trip lightly off the tongue for most of you. Sometimes titles like “Father” or “Pastor” can create a barrier for people. So…what do I want to be called? If you are comfortable with nicknames, I prefer Tom. But this may feel too informal or familiar. Perhaps you prefer a title. If you need or want to use a title, Father Tom – in this parish, at this time – would likely be confusing to us. Father Momberg seems a bit too formal. However, I have always liked the title a youth group gave me years ago: “Father Mom.” I am (cont. pg 5) INTERMEZZO: Notes from the Interim Dear Friends, One of the certain realities of interim ministry is that it usually seems incomplete, but actually that’s the way of it for all kinds of ministry. There is always more to do than there is time and energy to do it all. I stated repeatedly to anyone who asked me that my call to All Saints’ was the best match in my time in ordained ministry. I thank God for my time with you, and I thank you for your patience, honesty, and openness with me. I will take away a number of memories – • The laughter in the office that seemed to center around Andy Jones, Tommy Rogers, and Rick Hirschman. • The excellence of musicianship of Carroll Howe and Lynn Staininger that made the Sunday services a worship time for me as well. • The chairs in the Great Hall. • The ambo in the Great Hall. • The esprit de corps in the kitchen while preparing the Community Dinners. • The actors in two sermon dramas. • Commissioning a mission team seemingly every month. • Seeing Robin Taylor begin her time as a Postulant for Holy Orders and JoEllen Nutter launch her ministry in Panama And much more The calling of a Rector to be a “strong spiritual leader” has happened and you are on your way to an exciting revisioning with Fr. Tom. I will be following what you do with great interest to see where the Holy Spirit does in fact lead you. Although you will likely go some where you have not been before, you will be in good hands. I hope you will: • Support JoEllen Nutter in her work as a medical missionary. • Continue to improve on the number of people pledging and the number of people heading towards tithing. • Give Fr. Tom the time and space he needs to learn who you are, permission to make a mistake or two and try again, and plenty of prayerful support. • Be open to the movement of the Holy Spirit in all times and places as this good parish becomes a great parish. I want to thank all of you who have contributed to making the ministry of All Saints the vital force that it is. I especially want to the thank the Vestry, Strategic Planning and Profile Teams, the Search Committee and the staff for doing a lot of the heavy lifting during the interim period. As I write this we are still in the throes of Advent and looking forward with excitement and anticipation not only of Christmas, but of our new rector. The month of January promises to be a busy and exciting time around All Saints as we prepare for Fr. Tom’s arrival. Everett+ and Columba+ will be helping me in January during the “in-between” time of Fr. Philip’s departure and Fr. Tom’s arrival. A number of different ministry areas have been reflecting on their mission and ministry and writing up pieces for Fr. Tom to read prior to his arrival so he can hit the ground running in February. Scarborough, who was a member of All Saints for quite some time and is now serving Gathered by Christ Episcopal Church in Buckeystown will be ordained to the priesthood at 11:00 a.m. by Bishop Rabb at St. John’s Hagerstown. I encourage you to make every effort to attend this special occasion to support one of our own in this region. If you’ve never been to an ordination it is quite an amazing event and I know it would mean a lot to Anjel to have a good contingent from All Saints present. Know that this comes with my prayers and best wishes for an incredible 2008! Some other items to look forward to in January and early February are Robin Taylor, our postulant for Holy Orders will be preaching in all the Nave services January 26-27. On Sunday, February 3 The Rev’d Canon Mark Gatza, the deployment officer for the Diocese of Maryland, will be preaching at all Sunday morning services to help us prepare the way for Fr. LECTIONARY BIBLE STUDY In the Conference Room We Need Your Help The cold winter weather is here to stay! Jr. Daughters of the King are beginning a blanket project for the homeless in Frederick. We will be handing out fleece blankets to people living on the streets beginning in January so that they can stay warm this winter. We are accepting monetary donations to purchase fleece or donations of fleece. The fabric we are using is fleece in solid colors, two yards per blanket. The Feast of Holy Innocents The Jr. Daughters will once again be traveling to Washington DC to observe the Feast of Holy Innocents with Trinity Episcopal Church on December 28, from 12:30 to 3:00 p.m. The Feast of Holy Innocents is a day set aside to recognize killing of innocent children by King Herod's order. We take time to recognize and to pray for children that have passed during the year. We will gladly collect names and requests for prayer to take with us. In the Classrooms In January, the Pre-K through 2nd graders will experience the Godly Play stories of Epiphany, Baptism, and the parables of The Good Shepherd and The Good Samaritan. The 3rd and 4th graders will also study Epiphany, the Holy Family’s flight into Egypt and the parables of the Three Servants and the Prodigal Son. The 5th graders will study the flight into Egypt, the Parable of the Sower, and they will begin a unit on the Episcopal Church service. As we begin to share life and ministry with each other, I hope you will introduce yourself to me and tell me how you prefer to be known. The 3rd/4th grade class sent a care package and homemade Christmas cards to an Air Force unit in Qatar. The 5th graders visited folks in a nursing home. For reservations, contact the Church Office by January 7 by 4:00 p.m. 5 ♦ OUTREACH ♦ FREDERICK REGIONAL COUNCIL OF EPISCOPAL CHURCHES PANAMA MISSION 2008 (From a letter dated December 2, 2007) Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ, tant change in our Panama leadership structure coincides with the joyful news that All Saints’ has called as their new rector, the Reverend Thomas A. Momberg, effective February 2008. This important restructure of our Panama leadership team will allow me to focus on strengthening All Saints’ tri-fold ministry approach to our outreach mission work locally, nationally and internationally. Please celebrate with me all of this joyful news, as we continue to hold our Panama regional mission work in prayer. Exciting news is indeed hard to contain. So it is with great joy that I write this letter to each of you. Each day as I pray my favorite prayer, the Prayer of Jabez, I am reminded of how God works in different ways in all of our lives. "And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, "Oh, that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that you would keep me from evil that I may not cause pain!" So God granted his request." 1Chronicles 4:10 My favorite part of this prayer is, “Oh Lord, that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory for your greater glory.” That particular part of this prayer has become my mantra for so many of the ministries to which God has called me, but especially for our regional work in Panama which supports the Diocese of Panama’s Medical Project. God has had such wonderful plans for our mission work with our brothers and sisters in Panama, far beyond my finite vision. I never dared to dream that a vision which began with my husband Wil and me in 2003 would be embraced with such fervor by our regional churches, the Frederick community and by new lay leaders. Nor did I ever dare to dream that HE would call forth an Episcopal Church USA missioner, JoEllen Nutter, to be the director of operations for the Panama Medical Project. God indeed has enlarged many of our territories! The Reverend Sandra Kay Rice, Director Panama Mission 2004-2007 A WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS GIFT Being asked to become the team leader for the Maryland Mission Team that goes to Panama is a blessing and the best Christmas gift I have ever received. However, I must admit that my discernment was accompanied with some negativity. When Reverend Kay and I discussed this opportunity, I immediately thought why now; why me; I have too much to do; can I still go fishing with Lute? It seemed to me that I could not juggle this additional task with everything (real and imagined) that I am doing. I started to reflect on my previous trips to Panama and could only think how these opportunities have strengthened me personally and spiritually. From the beauty of the Panamanian countryside, to meeting new friends in this area as well as Panama, my initial negative feelings were being neutralized. One of the exciting tenets of diaconal ministry is that at ordination I was charged to bring the needs of the world to the church and to prepare and empower others to lead. I have learned over time that I am blessed indeed to be the conduit for others to move in the grace which calls them into ministry. The beauty of this calling is to watch and pray with others as God calls them forth. It is with great joy, that I announce to you that effective January 1, 2008 I have appointed Dan Lajewski as the 2008 Panama Maryland Team Leader. Dan has prayerfully accepted this important leadership role. You only have to watch and listen to Dan as he speaks about our beloved Panama mission work to know that God has anointed him for this ministry. Dan will be responsible for the day to day preparation and leadership of our regional Panama team, beginning with the February 2008 mission. As my discernment process continued, in early December, I listened to the sermon delivered by Bishop Michael Creighton. His message was more of a challenge by suggesting that we as Christians must get outside of ourselves and live for others, with others, in order to look after the well being of other people. He continued to explain how Christianity is a communal life and if I stand by your side, others will stand by my side, and no one will ever be depleted. These words inspired me to accept this new opportunity. As I accept this new role and receive this gift of opportunity, I ask each of you for your prayers and support. Please continue to stand by my side to serve our Lord. I will continue in my capacity as All Saints’ Outreach Director with our regional Panama mission as one of the programs for which I have oversight. Dan Lajewski 6 KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY IN MARYLAND As some of my friends at All Saints know, I have been serving in a Christian prison ministry, called Kairos, at the Maryland Correctional Institution (MCI) for the past six years. Resident inmates are introduced to this ecumenical ministry through a three day retreat that is conducted within the prison walls. From November 8-11, a team of 30 Kairos brothers, including myself, conducted the seventh Kairos weekend at MCI for 55 resident inmates. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AND ALL SAINTS’ FORM NEW PARTNERSHIP Habitat for Humanity, International is a nonprofit, ecumenical, Christian housing ministry that works in partnership with God and people everywhere to build decent, affordable houses in which people can live and grow. Since 1976 Habitat has built tens of thousand of houses around the world. Last year in Frederick County alone, numerous Habitat houses were built and occupied by pre-selected families who provided sweat equity in the building of their new homes. This exciting new All Saints’ outreach ministry will replace our existing partnership with Rebuilding Together, Frederick County. Over the last several years, potential Rebuilding Together homeowners who need assistance have dwindled substantially. In fact Rebuilding Together has taken on the responsibility of building a Habitat Home. Negotiations are in the process with Habitat for Humanity, Frederick County to undertake the partnership of building a home on Madison Street in Frederick City. Ground breaking is schedule for May 2008 with building to begin in June. This will be an intergenerational, skilled and unskilled project, requiring any number of levels of preparation and activities. Activities may range from, administrative work, construction, scheduling, coordination, meal set-up, meal preparation, publicity, fund raising, and developing and coordinating children’s activities. However, I know that God loves each one of them as much as He loves me. The motto of Kairos is “LISTEN, LISTEN, LOVE, LOVE.” So what happened on this weekend? Do you remember the lyrics from an old hymn, “GREAT THINGS HAPPEN WHEN GOD MIXES WITH MAN?” Well the Holy Spirit showed up and great things happened! As the Kairos team submits to doing His perfect will, God works on the heart of each of the residents. Most of the others either committed their lives to Christ for the first time or recommitted them. The retreat concludes with a closing program. The residents are asked to answer three questions. Below is a sample of the answers we heard at this closing. What spiritual condition were you when you arrived for this weekend? We were lost, broken, up against a wall, hopeless, fearful, stagnant or searching. What did you receive during this weekend? We found peace. We found answers to questions. We found agape love. We received forgiveness. We found Jesus. We found friends and men we can trust. “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw tehchild with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him.” - Matthew 2: 9b-11 What are you going to do with the gifts you received this weekend? We are going to spread God’s love to others inside this prison. We want to continue to grow as Christians in the fellowship of other Christian brothers. We want to change this institution. There were many individual testimonies at the closing; these two are typical. One man who was in his late 30’s said, “After saying a prayer to Jesus before bed last night, I slept all night for the first time in 10 years!” Another man in his late 60’s said with tears streaming down his face, “I have been incarcerated here for 37 years and I received more love (agape) over these past three days than I had received over the whole time I have been in prison.” OUTREACH MINISTRY For more information contact: The Reverend Kay Rice Director, Outreach Ministries Church: 301-663-5625 Extension 108 Home: 301-662-2104 Email: ricecrispy1@comcast.net Kairos International website:www.kairosprisonministry.org Michael Betteridge 7 JANUARY FOCUSES ON MINISTRY TO THE LEAST OF US All this month All Saints’ will focus attention on ministering to the “least of us” – the homeless, the hungry, and those who are threatened by homelessness and hunger. We will continue to highlight our support of the Alan P. Linton, Jr., Cold Weather Shelter Cold Weather Shelter. In addition to providing volunteers and shelter managers, we will be asking for donations of items given to each shelter guest. Throughout January there will be a box in the Gathering Space where you can drop off your donations. There will also be a list of items that are needed. A special thanks to all who participated. -6863. 8 ♦ BUDGET and FINANCE ♦ The Budget and Finance Committee has been meeting to develop the 2008 Budget that will be presented to the Vestry at their January meeting. The 2008 Budget is going to be a very tight budget and prior to presenting a budget to the Vestry; the Committee wants to obtain the final and complete financial net income or loss for the year 2007 in addition to the projected income amounts. late summer 2008. As you can see, the Budget and Finance Committee has many tough issues and decisions to make prior to finalizing the 2008 Budget. The Committee has elected to place a hold on the purchases of new equipment and supplies that is not necessary until the 08 Budget is presented and approved. If there are any questions for the committee, please direct them to my attention and I will address the question with the committee and will respond to the sender. The initial low budget for 2008 projected a deficit of $125,000. There are several reasons for the large deficit but the major reason is the delay in selling the rectory. Once the rectory is sold, the receipts from the sale will be applied to the principal loan balance which will greatly reduce the amount of interest payment each month.
