Lent 2015
Journey
of Stones
Our High School Youth created the cross shown
here during the EDGE worship service in
February. The youth wrote on the stones things
that keep them from having a full relationship
with God and then glued them to the cross face
down as a gesture of repentance. They then
surrounded those stones wtih reminders of John
3:16 to represent that our sins are erased in
the sacrifice of Christ, who became human and
accepted death on the cross for our sake. During
Lent, join us on the Journey of Stones.

Ask God deep inside during Lent
“Oh Lord, throughout these forty
days you prayed and kept the fast.
Inspire repentance for our sins and free
us from our past.”
We sang these words on Ash
Wednesday to begin our Lenten
journey. Throughout Lent we take the
time to look deep inside ourselves to
the places we wish to keep hidden. We
look at those places so we can expose
them and be able to build a closer
relationship with God and others.
“There’s nothing wrong with
me,” the man says.
“But sir, you’ve just been in
a terrible car accident. You’re
bleeding and have some deep
bruises. There may be internal
damage!”
“There’s nothing wrong with
me!”
“At least have a doctor check
you out, sir. We have an
ambulance right here – it
wouldn’t take very long.”
“I told you, there’s nothing
wrong with me!”
“But, sir.”
Then the man walks away from
the car accident. His wife picks
him up and drives him home.
Later, he dies from internal
bleeding.
If this man had allowed someone
to help, to look deep inside at the
hidden places, his life might have been
saved.
During Lent, God wants to go deep
inside with us, to bring to light those
sins we believe we’ve buried and no
longer affect us. God longs for us to
be free from our past and the sins that
keep us bound. As we approach the
foot of the cross we remember that
Jesus bled and died for us so that we
no longer need to be captive to our
sins. We can be free, if we so choose.
My prayer for each of us is that
we don’t let Lent pass us by. In the
busy-ness of life it is too easy to begin
something, never to bring it to fruition.
May our Lenten journey, begun on Ash
Wednesday, be 40 days of intentionally
allowing the great Physician to see
inside us so that we might be saved
from ourselves. Pastor Bonnie Gerber
Lent 2015: Journey of Stones
Midweek Worship
All Saints’ mid-week sermon theme for Lent 2015 is
Journey of Stones, which draws on the rich imagery of rocks
and stones in Scripture and the dichotomy of their use not
only as a metaphor to represent a strong foundation in God
but also as a metaphor for the weight of our sins. Below is
the schedule for 6:45 p.m. Wednesdays in Parish Hall and
for 7:30 p.m. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday in the
Sanctuary.
March 4
Sticks and Stones, John 8:1-12
March 11
Hearts of Stone, Luke 11: 37-52
March 18
Upon this Rock, Matthew 16:13-20
March 25
Crying Stones, Luke 19:29-40
April 2, Maundy Thursday
Stones to Bread, Matthew 4:1-11
April 3, Good Friday
The Final Stone, Matthew 27:60
Simple Suppers
Wednesday evenings during Lent, All Saints will gather
for a “Simple Supper” of delicious soups, salads and breads.
All are welcome to drop in for the informal meals beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesadys through March 29. The suggested
donation is $5 for adults and $3 for children.
To contribute soup or salad, or to help set up, serve or
clean up, sign up on the sheets posted in the Gathering Area.

614-885-0112 or ruthf@saintsonhigh.org.
Masterworks
On the fifth Sunday of Lent, March 22, the All Saints
Chancel Choir and Chamber Orchestra, directed by Jan
Arthur, will present Faure’s Requiem.
Faure (1845-1924) was an outstanding organist and
teacher, as well as a composer, who went against the
European (Austro-German) tradition by limiting himself to
more intimate musical forms resulting in a more austere
style, a characteristic which labeled him somewhat minimalist. Today all of his music is valued, and the All Saints
Chancel Choir and orchestra attest to the beauty of his
genius.

Fish vs. Fowl
Frenzy!
Our Lenten food drive, the Fish vs.
Fowl Frenzy, continues through March.
This fun, ‘noncompetitive competition’ asks that you bring in canned
protein, always a popular item, for the
Lutheran Social Services Food Pantries.
Men are asked to bring salmon;
women are asked to bring tuna; and
children, chicken.
Who will come out ahead at the
end of the Frenzy?! Fish, fowl? Either
way, the food pantry and those who
rely on it for help in feeding themselves and their families win!

them to church for the pantry. For
example, if you purchase a box of
cereal, buy two. Toothpaste? Buy two.
Canned fruit? Buy two.

We’re MARCHing into VBS season
Wanted: OWLs. Can you help?
We will blast off Vacation Bible School in June, and we are on the
lookout for spectacular OWLs (Older Wiser Lutherans) willing to volunteer
their time as we count down to the big event.
Whether you’re more comfortable behind the scenes preparing
curriculum and activities or front and center leading our young youth, we
have a place for you. VBS will be 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 15 through
19 and June 22 to 26. We need volunteers for one or both weeks.
Every year we host between 300 to 350 youth ages 3 through
6th grade, and it takes many hands to make this an enjoyable and
successful event. Our biggest needs now are for a kitchen/snack leader,
craft developer, drama leader, recreation leader and classroom-activity
developer. Look for a sign up board coming soon in the main hallway. Please pray
about how you can become involved in this outreach ministry.

Our Mission
Right Now!: March Focus
All Saints strives to...
Give glory to God;
John Ortberg is a great pastor.
Over the years, I’ve read a couple of
his books, including When The Game
Is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box.
Pastor Ortberg’s perspective on life and
faith has shaped many people around
the world, including myself. That’s
why when the latest study from John
Ortberg All the Places You’ll Go … How
Will You Know showed up on Right
Now Media, I checked it out right away.
I’m glad I did.
Here’s the official description:
Very rarely in the Bible does God
command someone to “stay.” He
opens a door, and then he invites us to
walk through it — into the unknown.
And how we choose to respond will
ultimately determine the lives we will
lead and the people we will become.
In this six-week session, John
Ortberg opens our eyes to the countless open doors God places before
us every day, teaches us how to
recognize them, and gives us the
encouragement to step out in faith
and embrace all of the extraordinary
opportunities that await.
So go ahead—walk through that
door. You just might do something that
lasts for eternity. The study was just released on
Feb. 24. Check it out, and by faith, walk
through the open door in front of you.
