I. Faculty of Humanities (FHS)
History
The Faculty of Humanities (FHS) is Charles University’s youngest faculty. Originally founded
in the early 1990s as the Institute for Liberal Education, it was elevated to the rank of a Faculty
in 2000, the vision being that it would offer study programmes at the Bachelor, Master and PhD levels
in various humanities and social science disciplines not yet established at CU. The FHS quickly gained
a reputation as a progressive school with innovative study programmes and teaching methods.
Mission
The mission of the Faculty of Humanities is through high-quality education to endow students with
the ability to lead a fulfilling life in this increasingly complex and changing world.
Goals




to provide education in the humanities and social sciences that meets the highest international
standards;
to achieve excellence in research and integrate it with education;
to cultivate the ability of students to learn throughout life and encourage self-responsibility
and a commitment to society;
to promote the mobility of the FHS’s increasingly international student body and academic
staff.
Science and Research
The Faculty of Humanities is dedicated to excellence in various areas of academic research.
The Faculty participates in international and national research projects and promotes young
researchers’ academic development.

Characteristics of BA Study Programme Liberal Arts and Humanities (offered in Czech):
The programme of Liberal Arts and Humanities (SHV) is focused on philosophical, historical,
and cultural and social anthropology. The significant features of the programme are broad offer
of courses and liberal curriculum that allows students to improve their individual abilities
and interests. Students complete mandatory courses in humanities and social sciences and pass
comprehensive exams relevant to each field. By their choice of courses during their study, they can
gradually specialise either for further (Master’s) studies, or for the practical use of the acquired skills.

i. Deutsche und franzözische Philosophie in Europa (Europhilosophie)
Das Angebot umfasst Lehrveranstaltungen in deutscher Sprache mit den Schwerpunkten klassische
und moderne deutsche Philosophie, französische Philosophie des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, deutsche
und französische Phänomenologie sowie internationale Rezeption der deutschen und französischen
Philosophie. Alle seitens der Studierenden zu erbringenden Leistungen wie Hausarbeiten, Referate
und die Abschlussarbeit können auf Deutsch angefertigt werden, auch die Verteidigung der MasterArbeit wird in deutscher Sprache absolviert. Der besondere Vorteil eines Studiums in Prag sind kleine
Arbeitsgruppen und eine intensive individuelle Betreuung.

ii. Historical Sociology
The aim of the study programme of historical sociology is to cultivate research activities
and the education of experts with a specialisation in the issues of long-term social processes
and trends that have a significant impact on life of contemporary societies. Above all, it deals with
the problems of modernisation and social change, globalisation trends and influences, integration
and disintegration processes, relationship of continuity and discontinuity, religious and cultural
pluralism, linking the global to the local, identification of the chances and risks of social development,
analysis of conflict situations and the possibility of overcoming them. The need for understanding
of all of these issues invokes the need for the development of adequate theoretical and methodological
approaches, and also of the specific training of university students.

iii. Oral History and Contemporary History
The two-year Master’s study programme in Oral History and Contemporary History is intended
for students interested in contemporary (European) history, in interviewing methodologies
and in interpretative methods. Its main aim is to train students to conduct research through creating
and analysing interviews, and developing fieldwork projects to address those historical
and contemporary issues that require interdisciplinary investigation. The Master is divided into two
sections, the first covers contemporary (Czech and international) history and events, the second is
methodological and focuses on various interviewing techniques through which we can study
contemporary history. It binds together two general approaches of studying history, the macro
and micro approaches, and enables a thorough understanding of recent events in history. The Master
Study Programme in Oral and Contemporary History has practical applications in academic
and university research, historic preservation and legal and human rights work.

General Anthropology
The postgraduate doctoral study programme at FHS CU is organised in the full-time (3 years)
and correspondence form of study. The programme allows studies focused on philosophical,
historical, socio-cultural and socio-linguistic anthropology and human ethology. The task
of the programme in general is grasping the theoretical basics and methods of this field and mastering
the methodology of academic research. The curriculum of PhD students includes: the studies are
organised in two modules, whereas the first module is compulsory for all students in the programme,
the second one is selected on the basis of the consultations with the supervisor; Ph.D. seminar:
a compulsory language exam; the defence of the student’s dissertation. The concept of the study
programme is determined by the study programme board.

Environmental Studies
The objective of the doctoral programme Environmental Studies is to provide the concept
of sustainable development with support in the form of scientifically conducted research.
An important aspect of the program is the interdisciplinary character of the defined research domains
and the synergies among them. Although it is not the main goal of the study, we assume that
the research outputs could be an important source of scientifically validated information for objective,
relevant and qualified decision-making on environmental aspects of the economic and social
development of the Czech Republic.

Civil Sector Studies
The aim of the program is to prepare highly qualified experts in civil society studies with knowledge
of the relevant theoretical approaches, sound knowledge of research methodology and in-depth
knowledge of the actual situation and practical problems in this area both in the Czech Republic
and abroad. Alumni are able to take part in both basic and applied research in academic institutions
and higher education institutions as well as become involved in the civil sector, public sphere (above
all the state administration) and for-profit sector (corporate social responsibility, philanthropy
and volunteering). The program is focused on sociological or socio-economic analysis of the civic
sector. The study plan of a PhD student includes planned publication activities, participation
at conferences
and
exams
from
obligatory
and
obligatory-optional
courses
according
to the accreditation documents. Upon completing the study with a doctoral exam and the defence
of a PhD thesis, the student receives a Ph.D. title. The content and framework of the study is
determined by the study programme board.

Historical Sociology
The main topics of Historical Sociology are the questions of social change, modernization and its
processes, civilization analysis, the formation of states and nations, and the formation of global
systems and globalization. These are observed by means of large scale comparative analysis, which
includes both broad territorial areas and time intervals. The field comprises a number of specific
research areas, including the question of collective mentalities, habits and social memory. Historical
sociology is a varied and internally differentiated discipline, which feeds into a number of specialised
research directions and also supports research at an empirical level.

Applied Ethics
Study of Applied Ethics is about systematic training in critical reflection on own and others attitudes,
in recognition of hidden assumptions and prejudices and overlooked ethical issues. We can say
in other words that it is about deepening understanding approach – and in this case it is the area
of humanities in a broad sense. The aim of these studies is therefore an effort to create a space
for systematic scientific work that focuses on the ethical dimension of various disciplines
or professions. During the studies the adepts have to manage also the methods of scientific work
and its professional presentation. Study plan for PhD. students includes: so called comparative
examination: one-term course completed by an examination in the fields, which the candidate has not
studied, but which are necessary for doctoral studies; compulsory part: two two-term courses
completed by an examination; optional part: a choice of six one-term courses completed
by an examination; other duties: an article in peer-reviewed publications, 2 reviews, 2 lectures,
seminar for students, participation in two conferences.

i.
Deutsche and französische Philosophie
Dieses Doktorstudium wird für das Präsenz- und das Fernstudium ausgeschrieben. Es können sich
alle bewerben, die sich für die Gebiete der klassischen und neueren deutschen Philosophie, der
französischen Philosophie des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, der deutschen und französischen
Phänomenologie sowie der gegenwärtigen internationalen Rezeption dieser Philosophien
interessieren und die Aufnahmebedingungen (erforderliche Unterlagen s. u.) erfüllen. Der Studienplan
der Doktoranden in diesem Programm sieht folgende, während des zweijährigen Studiums
(Mindeststudiendauer) zu erbringende Leistungen vor: Neben der Anfertigung von mindestens drei
Hausarbeiten im Anschluss an die Pflichtveranstaltungen laut Akkreditation sind dies mindestens drei
zu publizierende Artikel, die Teilnahme an mindestens drei Konferenzen sowie mindestens zwei
thematisch im Zusammenhang der Doktorarbeit stehende Forschungsaufenthalte im Ausland. Der
Studienabschluss besteht im Nachweis der genannten Leistungen, der Vorlage der Doktorarbeit sowie
in ihrer Verteidigung im Rahmen einer Promotionsprüfung. Die mit Erfolg abschließenden
Promovenden dürfen den Titel Ph.D. führen.

i.
Philosophie allemande et française
Ces études doctorales de troisième cycle sont ouvertes sous la forme interne et externe. La filière
« philosophie allemande et française » s’oriente sur la philosophie classique allemande (à partir
de Kant), la réaction à celle-ci, puis la phénoménologie (tout particulièrement celle de Husserl) ainsi
que sa réception et son développement en France, de la philosophie de la vie et de l’existence,
de l’herméneutique,
de
l’ontologie
phénoménologique,
jusqu’aux
modifications
actuelles
de la phénoménologie et aux derniers développements de la philosophie française contemporaine.
Elle permet l’étude de leurs conditions historiques et de leurs influences mutuelles dans l’espace
intellectuel et culturel européen. Cette filière propose ainsi une préparation exigeante
et professionnelle à la recherche et au déploiement des approches philosophiques actuelles qui
se sont formées en Europe centrale et en France et qui influencent fondamentalement les débats
sur la scène philosophique internationale. Le programme d’études du doctorant inclut des activités
de publication, la participation à des colloques et le passage des examens dans les matières
obligatoires et facultatives, au choix selon le manuel d’accréditation. Les études s’achèvent
par l’examen doctoral d’État et par la soutenance de la thèse de doctorat, après lesquels l’étudiant
obtiendra le titre Ph.D.

ii.
Sémiotique et de la communication
Caractéristique d’école doctorale: Etant constituée de façon interdisciplinaire, l’école doctorale
Sémiotique et philosophie de communication propose une préparation scientifique exigeante qui
conduit à la recherche philosophique et sémiotique qualifiée de la communication, de son évolution
et de ses relations avec d’autres milieux sociaux. L’enjeu principal de l’école doctorale est l’étude
philosophique des stratégies, des présupposés et des effets de communication. Bien qu’elle est conçue
de manière théorique, elle peut aussi bien disposer l’étudiant à pénétrer dans la pratique médiatique
de masse, parce qu’elle aide à comprendre le rôle de la sémiosis dans le processus de médiation.
Les étudiants sont menés à prolonger les lignes traditionnelles de recherche en sémiotique
et philosophie de communication tchèque et mondiale, ainsi qu’à suivre les connaissances théoriques
actuelles et à les développer de façon créative.

III. International Cooperation
The Faculty is highly supportive of student mobility and encourages participation in various types
of exchanges (Erasmus exchange programme, bilateral agreements at university as well as Faculty
level, etc.) thus increasing the diversity of students in classes.
International Office
The FHS International Office coordinates student, teacher and staff mobility. The office is responsible
for contacts with partner institutions in other countries and for promoting international cooperation.
The office also provides counselling and support to students incoming and outgoing within exchange
schemes as well as to free-movers.

Programmes offered in cooperation with partner institutions
Erasmus Mundus EuroPhilosophie
Faculty of Humanities participates in the programme German and French Philosophy in the European
Context (EuroPhilosophie), which offers highly qualified students from around the world an advanced
study course in the field of German and French philosophy. Over two years, students spend one to two
semesters at three of the seven European universities participating in this programme. Programme
graduates are awarded a joint Master’s degree from three participating universities.
The Erasmus Master Mundus program “German and French Philosophy in the European Context”
(Euro Philosophy) offers a two-year master’s study program to students from all over the world who
are chosen by an entrance exam; the study program is aimed especially at German and French

designing and administering innovative educational programmes abroad since 1982. Today, CET
offers semester and summer study abroad programmes in China, the Czech Republic, Italy, Japan,

Undergraduate Programme in Central European Studies (UPCES)
FHS participates in the Undergraduate Programme in Central European Studies (UPCES) offered
in cooperation with CERGE-EI. This semester study abroad programme is open to students from toptier American universities and FHS students (including FHS exchange students). FHS students can
choose any course and join the excursions or cultural events held as a part of the programme.
The courses focus on the history, politics, society, culture, literature and philosophy of Central Europe.
The classes are held in Jinonice (U Kříže 8, Prague 5) or in the CERGE – EI building (Politických vězňů

V. Student Life / Facilities for Students
Accommodation
Accommodation is provided in Charles University’s halls of residence (dormitories). Students are
normally housed in double-occupancy rooms. Erasmus students are usually housed in Hostivař
dormitory (Weilova 2, Prague 10), other international students in Větrník (Kolej Na Větrníku,
Prague 6) or Hvězda dormitories (Kolej Hvězda, Prague 6). For further information see this webpage:

Computer Facilities
PC workstation is available in the main building in Jinonice (building A) in the second floor (room
2063, 2066 – 8). Wireless Internet (Eduroam) can be accessed inside the university buildings

Library & Study Room
The Charles University library system is decentralized and consists of a number of libraries
at different locations. The FHS library can be found on the ground floor of the main building
in Jinonice, the study room is situated opposite the main building. The online catalogue is available

School Cafeteria (Menza)
Charles University operates a number of student cafeterias (“menza”) at different locations. The FHS
cafeteria is located on the ground floor of the main building in Jinonice.

Student Card
The CU Student Card together with the FHS coupon entitles holders to use the libraries, cafeterias,
or computer labs of the university and get them a 50% discount on public transportation. Upon
charging the card, students may use it for copying, printing or ordering food. The CU ID card is issued

The international students have an opportunity to socialise with other students, both Czech and
international ones, through the Tutoring Programme. In addition, various activities are organised also
