We arrived late for about one hour and half, it’s not bad though, since they were just starting the invocation when we got there. The Family Day activity was organized inside the Military Camp Aquino of Tarlac, and it was a good idea for the children who were able to run everywhere without disturbing anybody. The ambiance was relaxed and it’s like being in a giant picnic area and not in a Rotary District event. Before lunch, the RC Tarlac presented some wheelchairs to people with physical handicap. The Birth of Jesus (Luke 2:1-20 NIV) In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to his own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. The Shepherds and the Angels And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen which were just as they had been told. parachutist, fly of helicopter and a presentation of the different categories of soldiers that composed a basic army team. After lunch some games were organized, but we had to leave early and come back to Baguio as PN/ VP Bert had some work appointment. I hope you will all enjoy our Christmas Party, the Year End Holidays, and do not forget to be faithful to our regular Saturday meetings on our second part of the Rotary Year 2006-07. We are only at the middle of Rotary Year 2006-07 and I am requesting all our beloved RCB members to exert more effort for us to have a successful Anniversary on February 24, 2007. For this reason we have to: - Provide one Paul Harris Fellow thru our PHF Raffle. - Provide more Sustaining Members to TRF. - Bring more new members to our club to become a Golden Club. Once again, THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU and have a Happy Holidays! 3 IN RETROSPECT The Meeting That Was 09 December 2006 Rtn. Pam Perkins The meeting started with the program coordinator at the helm ably presided by IPP Mike Pearson. Rtn. Jody Alabanza solemnly recited a beautiful esoteric poetic invocation. We were graced with the presence of Rtn. Flo Bayquen who just came back from California and of course PP Veeh Balajo healed and revitalized from her surgery. EIC John Cunanan performed a comprehensive finest moments sufficiently raising our coffers. Raffle was performed by Dir. Uwe Koeller. The lucky winners were PP Helmut Schlaaff, Rtn. Jody Alabanza and EIC John Cunanan. Birthday greetings and ice cream floated courtesy of EIC John Cunanan. PE Raffy Chan conceptualized a very entertaining program for that special day, called PoetryAppreciation. PE Raffy shared the poetry of two famous poets. One of them was the classic poem, “How Do I love Thee …Let me count the ways”. Can you guess who the poet is? She was born 06 March 1806, eldest of 12 children; she had an autocratic father who forbade his children to marry. Her escape from her lonely sickly harsh life was poetry which was published while in her teens. Robert Browning admired her poetry. They met, fell in love and eloped to Florence, Italy. As a consequence, her father disinherited her. This was irrelevant to her. Love bloomed and so did her health, the power of love, as PE Raffy says. “Love conquers all??” Seems like it did for them. Rtn. Flo Bayquen was appointed to recite the poem with passion and meaning. It was a High School Deja Vu experience for Rtn. Flo. The poet is, if you still don’t know by now is: Elizabeth Barrett Browning. The second shared poet’s poem was: “To Celia: Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes”. IPP Mike Pearson was appointed to recite this poem which he also read pretty well. This poet is Benjamin Jonson. Rtn. Pam Perkins too recited a love poem by Khalil Gibran which she dedicated to Rtn. Jody Alabanza. And last but not least was Song Appreciation (sung poetry): our classic love song, “Dahil Sa Iyo” interpreted in six different versions. PE Raffy had us guessing. They were Diomedes Maturan, Rico Puno, Ryan Cayabyab, Nora Aunor, Pinay and the Letterman. The meeting was different, highly entertaining, educational and humorous. And as PP Teops Rondez put it: awakened, calmed our spirit and consciousness, enlivened and gave us relief from tensions. As Rtn. Flo Bayquen put it: “profound!” 4 SCENES WE LIKE TO SEE Images From Last Week’s Meeting 09 December 2006 Images & Captions by EIC John Cunanan The meeting ably presided by IPP Mike Pearson as Program Coordinator in the absence of Rtn. Ike. As always, members are patiently waiting for the program to roll. PE Raffy Chan delivered the announcements in behalf of Pres. Gerard who attended a District Event. Birthday greetings and ice cream floated courtesy of EIC John Cunanan. Rtn. Flo Bayquen was appointed to recite the poem with passion and meaning. Rtn. Pam recited a love poem by Khalil Gibran which she dedicated to Rtn. Jody who enjoyed the moment. PE Raffy banged the gavel closing another entertaining meeting... and as Rtn. Flo put it: “Profound!”. 5 BAKUN MEDICAL-DENTAL-LEGAL MISSION Community Service “A” 08 to 10 December 2006 Dir. Mia Cawed On December 8, 9 and 10, 2006, four Rotarians made it to the yearly Bakun MeDeLeg sponsored by Luzon Hydro. They are PP Chris Peralta, PP Diony Claridad, Rtn. Chris Faelnar and myself. We were ably and happily assisted by 21 SLU Rotaractors and 5 UB Rotaractors. The mission is a success! It is an affirmation and a display of the Rotarian spirit. It gave true meaning to the motto “Service Above Self”. From the point of view of a relatively new Rotarian like me, it justifies and touches on the very reason for the existence of Rotary. Where did that come from? Here goes… December 8 - The group departed a little after 9:00 0’clock in the morning with the Baguio Achievers Academy as the take off point. Lunch was at the Highest Point of the Philippine Highway System where picture-taking also took place. The breath-taking and picturesque scenery made the trip seem short. When we deviated from the Halsema Highway, the rough roads were ignored as we started appreciating the wild sunflowers in bloom and the pine trees which were everywhere. Bakun is a living testimonial of a successful reforestation by a business entity with a social conscience. We finally reached the Bakun Central School at about 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon where the MeDeLeg was to take place. Inspection of the school and assigning of rooms for the mission were done. When the Rotaractors have started physically arranging the rooms to facilitate a systematic and efficient flow of patients, us Rotarians went to the High School nearby which was situated on top of a hill. We met the third year and fourth year students and discussed with them the different courses offered by the universities and colleges in the cities, particularly Baguio City. We took turns in discussing our respective professions and helped each other in discussing the other offered courses and opportunities. We stopped just in time for dinner which was served at the Barangay Hall. Dinner was sumptuous – thanks to Rtn. Chris Faelnar of Luzon Hydro. It was way beyond my expectations of Bakun food. We had grilled fish slices san lemon-butter sauce but it tasted good. In addition we had sinigang with shrimps and green leafy vegetables. Talk about a balanced diet and with all honesty I can say we had it. Bedtime meant PP Chris, PP Diony and Rtn. Chris F. in one room with me by myself in the next room. After a long trip and a busy afternoon, sleep came easy. December 9 - We were up early as we had to take turns in using the bathroom. After partaking of the breakfast prepared for us which consisted of fried fish and sunny side up eggs, we were ready for the real work. We proceeded on foot to the nearby school which initially was just like any other MeDeLeg I have attended. The difference only lies in the fact that Rtn. Chris F. and I were dispensing the medicines. While we had to learn the ropes for a while, we eventually acquired the skills. In the meantime, Manny of Luzon Hydro entertained the children with games and prizes. When everything was going on smoothly at the Pharmacy Section, I joined the children and talked to them about their rights and duties, about hygiene, proper nutrition and how to protect themselves from abuse. For my next lecture, the audiences were the parents. I discussed with them the new law on violence against women with the objective of preventing the occurrence of such or putting a stop to it if it was already happening. I was thrown a lot of questions and they asked for a copy of the law. After lunch at the Barangay Hall, we went back to work at the school. The four Rotarians never had a time to chat because it became a really very busy afternoon. It seemed like we were all in a rush because time seemed to fly. I felt that the patients feared they might not be all attended to and the feeling was infectious as I felt the same. It was only after 7:00 in the evening that I realized I was very tired. By then, my legs were aching and I was already dizzy. Thinking it might be due to hunger, I grabbed a bite of wafers and it surely did the trick. I was back on my feet with a new burst of energy. What is laudable is that I never heard a single complaint from PP Chris, PP Diony and the Rotaractors. They just all looked self-fulfilled although tired. When we called it a night, we had served 506 patients. Out of these, 46 of them were circumcised. Hats off to the selfless service of our two past presidents. No wonder they are so blessed. That night, there is no reason for insomnia. The weary bones and painful muscles were more effective than sleeping pills. December 10 – It was departure day. However, the team decided to attend to some more patients so that when we finally took off, our records show that 576 patients were attended to, the breakdown of which is as follows: Medical – 198; Pedia – 223; Dental – 101; Surgery – 54 (inclusive of the 46 circumcisions). Tired but fulfilled with homesickness slowly being felt, we hurried back to Baguio before lunch. Stopped by Natubleng for hot pancit and rolls, we made our way back home and arrived before dusk. It was a very fulfilling mission and I learned more about Rotary – and the Rotarians, of course – during those three days than during the three years that I have been a Rotarian. I have finally found what I have been looking for from the club, the reason why I joined Rotary. 6 CHOICE SCENES FROM BAKUN Images From Bakun Outreach 08 to 10 December 2006 Images by Captions by Rtn. I wonder what’s with the highest point “sign”? PP Diony with Dir. Mia posed for a souvenir photo. The MeDeLeg Team posed for posterity prior to their whole day’s work with 500 patients in line. This class eagerly awaits the lectureto be given by the Rotarians about career guidance. Dir. Mia talking to the students about their rights and duties and how to protect themselves from abuse. 7 FROM THE EDITOR More to this Life EIC John Cunanan It’s late at night, outside in our terrace, the cool breeze of December brought chills to my bones. Clear, deep black skies were decorated with twinkling stars and waning crescent moon – perfect setting for a fireworks display. Boom, boom, boom…the silent night was broken by a series of special effects that brought colorful lights in a beautiful formation of shapes and movement. Usually, when you see a fireworks show, you will notice that the explosions and the effects progress from grandeur to spectacular display – and you keep on expecting for more. To many, life is like a fireworks show – you just keep expecting for more! More to this life – more love, more friends, more money, more gadgets, more time, more work, more business opportunity, more properties, more sales, more promotions, more trips, more vacations, more fun, more parties, more sleep, etc., etc. etc. We just wanted more. Anybody here who wanted less? Recently, I read an article that says “in order for human race’s survival, we need to secure and start occupying other planets”. Wow! Earth is getting smaller don’t you think? We need more planets in order for our race to survive. In our club, many may have already had everything they could ever have or ask for. You got what you’ve wanted, you lived your life to the fullest, and you had more of this life. To some, you’re are still on the process of extracting, hauling up, mining and taking out everything you can get out of it. You say “it is life.” Just a bit of caution: having more can be quite tricky. I have seen many who have all the riches and glory in this world, yet they are not happy. They have lost their family. They are alone. Having the right perspective of having more in this life is important. The good thing about having more is that you have the ability to help more people and make a difference. Joining a Rotary Club is one avenue that paves the way for us to give back and give more to the community. Being part of the club gives sense and meaning to this life that we live through our service. This season, let us all ponder the following thoughts: Someone said that “A minute of heroism is better than a long life lived for naught”. In the Bible, a very powerful phrase challenges us “What profits a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man exchange for his soul?” The chorus from one of Steven Curtis Chapman song says it all: “But there’s more to this life; Than livin’ and dyin’, More than just tryin’ To make it through the day. More to this life, More than these eyes alone can see, And there’s more than this Life alone can be.” Again, having the right perspective in life can make all the difference. As the spirit of Christmas and the holiday cheers knocks on the door of our hearts, may we remember the greatest example of having more and giving more: “God sent His Son Jesus that we may have life, and have it to the full.” Have a Blessed Christmas and a Meaningful New Year! 8 INVOCATION - RELECTION FEAT URE Angels Among Us Children Saying Grace by: Alabama Contributed by: RAPP Cynch Meadows Thank God for Children Saying Grace... I was walking home from school on a cold winter day. Took a shortcut through the woods, and I lost my way. It was getting late, and I was scared and alone. But then a kind old man took my hand and led me home. My mama couldn’t see him, oh but he was standing there. And I knew in my heart, he was the answer to my prayers. Last week I took my children to a restaurant. My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby I heard a woman remark, “That’s what’s (REFRAIN) wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know Oh I believe there are angels among us. Sent down to us from somewhere up above. They come to you and me in our darkest hours. He winked at my son and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer. “Really?” my son asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then in a theatrical whisper he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream.
