The Season of Ordinary Time - St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church
The Season of Ordinary Time “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 Today we celebrate the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time...what does Ordinary Time represent in our Catholic Faith? Although ordinary time sounds like a dull, boring time of year, in the Church calendar, it’s the season when Catholics grow and mature in their faith outside the great celebrations of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter. Ordinary Time is celebrated in two segments: from the Monday following the Baptism of Our Lord up to Ash Wednesday; and from Pentecost Monday to the First Sunday of Advent. This makes it the largest season of the liturgical year. The liturgical year follows the natural rhythms of life - periods of intense concentration and celebration followed by times of quiet reflection and maturation. Ordinary Time or tempus annun in Latin is those weeks and months of growth when we set aside the major anniversaries and remembrances of our faith and concentrate on our own intimacy with Christ in order to live out the message of the Gospels. In fact, the term “ordinary time comes not from the word meaning common, but from the word ordinal” meaning numbered. How do we take advantage of this season of the church year? We can deepen our prayer life, read the scriptures and unite more deeply with the Lord in the Eucharist. We can decide to attend daily Mass, say the rosary, attend a retreat such as our annual parish retreat at Ignatius House or CRHP, spend time with the Holy Sacrament, sign up for the Elijah Cup and pray for vocations or go to confession more frequently. We can volunteer our time to help those less fortunate. We can get involved in a parish ministry. By doing this, we can become the extraordinary messengers of the Gospel that we have been commissioned to be through our Baptism. Ordinary Time is only ordinary if we think of it that way. If we consider these weeks, not as the long boring stretches between the good stuff, but as a time to try new things and refocus our energies on our spiritual growth, Ordinary Time can become one of our favorite -- and most rewarding -- times of year. Ordinary Time is this day, this moment. Now. Live it well! July 13, 2014 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 5 Catechist Faith Formation Day 2014 Saturday, August 23 Killing Jesus Book Study Starts Monday, August 4 During August, we will be offering a new four week book study on Monday nights from 7:00pm 8:30pm in Room 233. Killing Jesus by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard details the events leading up to the murder of the most influential man in history: Jesus of Nazareth. Killing Jesus takes readers inside Jesus’s life, recounting the seismic political and historical events that made his death inevitable – and changed the world forever. Through reading and discussion, we will learn more about Jesus’ life and times, his beliefs and obtain a greater understanding of how He influences the lives of Christians today. The class will be facilitated by Martha Smith. There is no cost for the class and we ask that you purchase a copy of the book on your own. Please read the first two chapters before the first meeting on Monday, August 4. Register at www.stjudeatlanta.net/oreilly All religious education and St. Jude School teachers are warmly invited to attend the 8th annual Catechist Faith Formation Day on Saturday, August 23 from 8:00AM to 4:30PM at Transfiguration Church in Marietta. The faith formation day is a collaborative effort of the North and North Metro Deaneries of the Archdiocese of Atlanta of which St. Jude is a member. This conference seeks to provide the catechist with: • Access to national level speakers representing major publishers • A local opportunity to network with catechists from other parishes • An opportunity to view current materials featured by sponsoring publishers • Ongoing catechist faith formation from basic through advanced certification This is a wonderful opportunity to enhance your teaching skills and to network with other teachers. There is no cost to attend. To see a complete listing of workshops being offered that day, visit the faith formation website at www.catechistconference.wordpress.com. Marriage Alive Saturday, July 19 Married couples of all ages and stages are invited to a BBQ and movie night, sponsored by our marriage ministry on Saturday, July 19. Join us at 6:30PM on the patio outside of the youth center (lower level Ministry Building) for some summer fun! We will first have a potluck barbecue dinner followed by the showing of the movie Courageous. From the writers of Fireproof, comes a story about four law enforcement officers whose lives are deeply tested as they embrace their calling to serve and to protect. When tragedy hits close to home, they are left wrestling with their hopes, their faith, and their priorities as men. It is a powerful movie that will inspire you! RSVP and tell us what you are bringing at twww.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F0D4BA9AE2FAB9bbqmovie or contact Natalie Uebelacker at 404-831-4681 for more information. Hope you can join us! Page 6 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 13, 2014 Ministry Leaders Needed Lord Jesus, Master, help me to identify the talents with which You have blessed me. Give me the desire to return a portion of my talents to You and my church community. Help me to serve You through my actions. Amen. One of the things that makes St. Jude special is the vibrant and active ministries we have. We currently have four openings for ministry leaders. Please prayerfully consider sharing your time and talent as a leader for one of these deserving ministries. It is a great way to get involved in your parish, share your enthusiasm with our church community and be a faithful steward of God’s gifts. Please contact Julie Smith at jsmith@stjudeatlanta.net or 678-252-5849 to volunteer or for more information. Natural Family Planning This ministry is responsible for communicating information about Natural Family Planning (NFP) to the families of our parish. Natural Family Planning (NFP) is the umbrella term for the natural, healthy, morally acceptable methods of family planning recommended by the Catholic Church to help couples space, achieve, or avoid pregnancy. This ministry works with the archdiocese and our parish to answer questions about the NFP process, share information about classes, and to share the good news about the benefits of NFP. Respect Life The work of our Respect Life Ministry is fourfold: liturgical, education, social action and pastoral care - all with the intent of promoting a culture of life - according to our Catholic faith and teachings. Activities of this ministry include participating in local Respect Life rallies and marches, fundraisers for crisis pregnancy centers and other outreach, projects to protect and save life; sponsoring of liturgical events and education of the parish community on respect life issues. The leader of this ministry works in conjunction with the pastor and the Archdiocesan Respect Life Director. If you are interested in leading this ministry, please contact Fr. Adam directly to discuss the requirements and timeframes for Respect Life activities and events. St. Teresa’s Circle St. Teresa’s Circle is our ministry for mothers. The Circle meets monthly and often has guest speakers who discuss topics relevant to mothers such as faith, marriage and family. The Circle also has some evening social events, provides meals to families with new babies or ill family members, organizes the parish Easter Egg Hunt, the Basket of Blessings program, and an annual auction benefitting the Interfaith Outreach Home. This ministry leader will be responsible for organizing events and communicating them to the parish community. This is a great position to share with a friend. Young Adult Singles The Young Adult Singles ministry is new to St. Jude. This ministry will bring together people in their 20s and 30s and connect them to our parish, the Archdiocese and their Catholic Faith through a variety of social, spiritual and service events. This ministry leader will be also be responsible for the Young Adult Singles Facebook page. July 13, 2014 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 7 Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan Update Meetings This Week Based on the March 2014 Pastoral Plan Survey of active, inactive, and fallen away Catholics, Archbishop Gregory has selected four key issues for the inclusion in the Archdiocese of Atlanta Pastoral Plan: 1) Knowing Our Faith 2) Living Our Faith 3) Spreading/Keeping Our Faith 4) Evolution of Our Parishes As each parish and mission is essential to the creation of a vibrant and insightful Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan, Archbishop Gregory has asked our parish to develop three recommendations for each of the four key issues. Parish ministry leaders will be meeting at 7:00PM on the following dates to develop these recommendations: Monday, July 14 - Knowing Our Faith - Room 233 Tuesday, July 15 - Evolution of Our Parishes - St. Jude School Wednesday, July 16 - Spreading/Keeping Our Faith Room 233 Thursday, July 17 - Living Our Faith - Room 233 If you would like to participate in any of these meetings, please contact your ministry leader for more information or call the parish office at 770-394-3896. This summer, we will be installing new flooring and pews in the main sanctuary of the church. Daily Mass will be held in the Stapleton Center and Sunday Masses will be held in the School Gymnasium. Mass times will remain the same. Confessions will be heard during the normally scheduled times in Room A in the basement of the Church. No baptisms or weddings will be scheduled to be celebrated in our sanctuary during this time. Funerals will be celebrated by our clergy at one of the local Catholic churches as needed. PRAYING PACEM IN TERRIS The Archdiocese of Atlanta is asking that we pray and reflect on excerpts from Pope John XXIII’s Pacem in Terris encyclical during the 2013-14 liturgical year. Men, both as individuals and as intermediate groups, are required to make their own specific contributions to the general welfare. The main consequence of this is that they must harmonize their own interests with the needs of others, and offer their goods and services as their rulers shall direct—assuming, of course, that justice is maintained and the authorities are acting within the limits of their competence. Those who have authority in the State must exercise that authority in a way which is not only morally irreproachable, but also best calculated to ensure or promote the State's welfare. (53) Items Needed for Refugees Catholic Charities Atlanta’s (CCA) Refugee Resettlement Program has seen an unprecedented number of refugee arrivals over the past months. Because of the large influx, CCA’s supplies are low. They need household items to set up 60 apartments over the next two months. Furniture, pots and pans, twin size sheets and comforters, cleaning supplies, bathroom supplies are most needed. Items may be dropped off at CCA’s Northake office at 2305 Parklake Drive, Suite 150, Building 9 or contact Kim Longshore at 678-222-3964 or klonshore@catholiccharitiesatlanta.org. Additional help is needed by volunteers willing to help staff with the actual moving in and setting up of these apartments. Visit Our Facebook Page! Are you using Facebook?
