Local heroes recognised
PARRAMATTA CITY COUNCIL ANNOUNCED ITS AUSTRALIA
DAY AWARD WINNERS AT A SPECIAL CEREMONY AT
RIVERSIDE THEATRES ON 26 JANUARY 2014.
Lord Mayor of Parramatta, Cr John Chedid, presented the
awards together with Parramatta’s Australia Day Ambassador,
Anthony Hasham AM, director and chairman of Life Education.
Parramatta Eels Captain, Tim Mannah, was named Citizen of
the Year in recognition of his dedication to the community.
As an ambassador for the Ronald McDonald House at
Westmead, Mannah regularly visits the house and devotes his
time supporting children and families staying there.
Senior Citizen of the Year went to Donald Hones, who works
tirelessly as a support teacher at Granville Boys High School.
Mr Hones always goes above and beyond to help ‘at risk’
young men, regularly visiting Granville Youth and Community
Recreation Centre and juvenile detention centres.
Alexander Roberts was awarded Young Citizen of the Year for
his work with the environment.
Volunteer of the Year, Wendy Purkis, has been an active
volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House for more than 30
years. At age 75, Mrs Purkis still volunteers five nights every
six weeks to look after the house.
Parramatta Eels Captain, Tim Mannah, with his Citizen of the Year Award
Western Sydney Wanderers Captain, Michael Beauchamp, was
named Sportsperson of the Year, while Community Project of
the Year went to the Friends of Duck River Bushcare Group.
For the first time, highly commended awards were also given
out for the citizen, volunteer and young citizen of the year
categories, going to Dragoljub Brkljac, Jim Juillerat and
Lara Nakhle respectively.
Council would like to congratulate all the award recipients
and nominees and thank them for all their hard work and
dedication to the community.
Lord Mayor’s
Message
Lord Mayor of Parramatta Cr John Chedid with Cr Bob Dwyer, Cr Steven Issa, Deputy Lord Mayor Cr Paul Garrard,
Cr Jean Pierre Abood and Western Sydney Wanderers FC Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman
On behalf of every Councillor and
staff member at Parramatta City
Council, and my family, I’d like
to wish you all a Happy Easter. If
you’re planning on going away
over the holiday period, take care
on the roads.
Without doubt, this year has had
an exciting start. The upgrade
of Church St Mall is already
underway, ensuring that by the
end of this year, residents will
enjoy new event spaces, new
cafés and kiosks and more seating
and shade to relax. The upgrade
of Church St Mall is long overdue
and I’m looking forward to
welcoming you to the new space
later in the year.
Locally, there is no shortage
of things to do in the coming
months. The events calendar
is bursting with festivals and
activities - from the Winterlight
Festival to the Heritage Festival,
there is something for everyone.
For families with young children,
don’t forget to head down to our
Liquid Cinema during the April
school holidays for free movies
under the stars.
I look forward to seeing residents
at many of Council’s events as
the City comes alive over the next
few months.

Around 100 local volunteers hit the
streets of Parramatta in February for
Council’s annual Homelessness Street
Count.
The results will also be used to develop
appropriate responses to homelessness
and improve the wellbeing of homeless
people in the Parramatta area.
The Count, now in its fifth year,
revealed 24 rough sleepers and 249
sleeping in emergency and crisis
accommodation.
This year’s results showed a small
decrease in the number of rough
sleepers, compared to last year,
with decreased numbers reported in
emergency and crisis accommodation
as well.
Information gathered will help the
City measure the effectiveness of
homelessness programs and to track
trends in numbers.

PARRAMATTA GIRLS
THE FACTORY
FOOD
Eight former inmates return to the
notorious Parramatta Girls Detention
Centre for a reunion 40 years later.
For some it’s a way to find healing,
for others it’s a way to dispel the
ghosts, for all of them it is a way to
share the pain.
Q&A sessions with the cast and
the real Parra girls will be available
following some performances along
with tours of the actual centre.
Described as New Zealand’s firstever Pacific musical, The Factory is
an entertaining and entirely unique
exploration of the Samoan migrant
experience.
Hilarious and heartfelt, this vibrant
funk-fuelled musical weaves a
romantic narrative and wry lyrics
into a tribute to the courage of the
Pacific people who came to Auckland
during the 1970s, searching for ways
to support the families they left
behind and striving to make new
lives for themselves.
This is an absolutely brilliant
production of immersion theatre
about family, love and food. Not only
are you likely to get the opportunity
to share in a tidbit or two with the
actors as they cook in their on-stage
kitchen, but Food delivers one of the
most imaginative love scenes seen on
stage in a long time.
