From the Mistress Of Arts & Sciences:
Unto the gentles of Dun Carraig does Mary Isabel of
Heatherstone send greetings. War! War! WAARRRR!!!
Oops…was that me?! The madness of war has apparently infected
even the more artsy-fartsy folks of the Barony. In addition to the
more obvious fighting activities scheduled, there are TONS of
classes being offered this year! Most are cost little or nothing and
offer you an opportunity to learn from teachers who have traveled
from throughout the Known World. More information can be
found at www.pennsicwar.org The SCA is founded on the
foundations of Arts, Service and Fighting. Pennsic gives folks a
chance to practice all three skills. I challenge every member of the
Barony to attend at least one class during the war. There are even
classes being held in the late afternoon and evening, so there’s no
reason not to pick up this particular gauntlet. For those already
planning on attending classes, might I recommend a three-pronged
approach? Take one class on a topic you love, and one class on a
topic you know nothing about and one class that adds to your
ability to participate in the SCA in general. This method promotes
growth in all facets of your artistic development and ensures you
have something to share with the rest of the Knowne World.
We’ve been on hiatus during August, but classes will be
ramping up again come September. Please contact me if you would
like to teach. I received a whopping “none” to my requests for
teachers last month. While I like teaching, I am not the only
person in the group with skills. If you value variety in the A&S
classes offered in Dun Carraig, please step up and volunteer.
Page 4
From the Chronicler:
Greetings Unto all Dun Carraig!
Thanks to all of the officers for getting me their reports
by the meeting! It has helped a lot! Keep them coming!
In Service,
Lylie of Birkenhead
Page 5
Proposal for Baronial Awards
We will vote on these in September!
Orders
Order of the Seahawk – Pre-eminent Order for the Barony. Granted to
those who have proven themselves to be stalwarts of the Barony for
supporting DC through their efforts in varied and diverse means
Order of the Emerald Flame – on going excellence in the arts and
sciences
Order of the Sapphire Path – on going excellence in service
Order of the Silver Blade – on going excellence in any marshaled
activity
Awards
Mark of Excellence – award given for specific achievement or action
within the barony
Bànghlas Carraig (Green Stone) – given for a specific A&S achievement
bead color – green (color of the laurel wreath)
Guirme Carraig (Blue Stone) – given for a specific service or action
bead color – blue (color of the pelican background)
Gile Carraig (White Stone) – given for a specific armored/rapier
achievement or action
bead color – white (color of a knight’s belt)
The idea here is to create an award structure much like the Award of
Arms, in that each discipline has its own award, and carries with it a
Page 6
Mark of Excellence, just like an Opal carries with it an Award of Arms
for example. The first time a person receives any of these awards they
will receive a MoE and the cross bottony token that goes with it, as well
as the bead that represents that award. With each successive award they
will only receive the bead.
Others
Baroness’s Award of Courtesy – awarded to an individual who has
demonstrated exceptional courtesy to others
Company of Dun Carraig’s Champions – A company for those who
have served as baronial champions. With a medallion of red and white,
Heater and Sword (armoured), Buckler and Sword (rapier), drawn Bow
(archery), Lantern (A&S)

just your list of skills and let’s get started planning your entry. We will
cover steps to take your entry through the phases of planning, creation
and documentation. This will be an on-going class, including
consultation on an “as-needed” basis to ensure that everyone interested
in participating in KASF (or any A&S competition/display) is able to
document and display their best possible work. This is class is not
intended to be a social event, so please come prepared. If you need more
information on what to bring, please contact the instructor.

the Barony know as soon as possible.
• After the results have been posted to the list. I ask that no matter

on honor. As such I would hope you realize your words reflect
your honor. No matter what your personal opinion may be. I
request you remain civil.
I'd like to urge everyone to gather their thoughts together before
the meetings and send a brief write up to Lylie to make life easier
on her at the meetings. It will also help keep your report short
and sweet.
Chataline—
Chataline—
• Welcome to Jeff and Charlotte who are officially moved into
their new house in Charles county. Family moving from East
Kingdom has run into some issues with selling their house - send
good thoughts their way.
• Have run into a problem regarding contact with folks in other
SCA groups wanting on our mailing list. We discussed at one
time a "messages only" board to convey information like "fighter
practice cancelled", or "special weaving workshop this weekend".
Where are we going with this???? I am continually turning away
people who want to play with our group.
