WELCOME to Worship!
Cathedral of Hope is a congregation of
the United Church of Christ. Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we
hope you will return often.
Cathedral of Hope began in 1970 with
a circle of 12 friends, and has since
grown into the world’s largest liberal
Christian church with a primary outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning people.
•The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to
be a community of hope proclaiming
God’s inclusive love, removing
barriers to faith and empowering
all people to grow in grace toward
wholeness.
•The MISSION of Cathedral of Hope is
to reclaim Christianity as a faith of
Extravagant Grace, Radical Inclusion
and Relentless Compassion.

T
Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope!
oday we will conclude a monthlong series of sermons under the
heading “CoExist”. Today’s sermon
is called “Playing in the Sandbox Together!”
Throughout this month we have been
challenged to find ways in which
we can live together in peace and
harmony in a religiously pluralistic
world. We have been called to be
accountable and responsible for our
own faith, and to become spiritually
mature as followers of Jesus.
“Playing in the Sandbox Together” is a call to go beyond the dogmas of religion—dogmas that have been used to “divide and conquer”—to bring to
mind the values that we hold in common and to create a world where people
count. We know that our dogmatic approach to religion keeps us from “loving
one another as God loves us”. Perhaps it is the greatest system of oppression
that people of faith today are holding on to in what has been termed a “culture
war” here in the United States. Perhaps the fear of “the other” and the fear
that someone else’s relationship with God is as valid as our own threatens our
security or our faith today.
As a Christian church, we affirm our belief in Jesus Christ, his leadership and
his teachings. These teachings are as valid today as they were in Jesus’ day.
Jesus was never afraid to cross boundaries of race, culture, color, or religion.
Speaking to women, Samaritans, the Roman soldier and others clearly demonstrates his ability to CoExist.
As we meet here at Cathedral of Hope, we too CoExist; while we all might
identify as Christian, we come from many different religious backgrounds and
experiences. We are Roman Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, United Church of
Christ, Lutheran, Episcopal, Pentecostal—in fact we probably represent every
religious background conceivable. If we hope to CoExist with others in the
world, we must first CoExist here!
As we worship today, I pray that we can model our ability to “play in the sandbox together” and hope that we can do so with others as well.
Blessings,
The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas

Insight into the various
elements of our services
De Colores
This Mexican folk song
promotes racial understanding
and cooperation. The first
stanza speaks of the colors of
nature, and the second of the
different colors of the people of
the earth.
The song, originally written
in Spanish, has become a
rally song for the United Farm
Workers movement.
The tune, DE COLORES, takes
its name from the text. It is
commonly performed with
guitars and trumpets in
Mariachi style. Recent years
have witnessed the use of
secular musical styles in the
churches of Mexico, including
the Mariachi mass, with guitars
and trumpets. De Colores has
become a popular song adapted
for use in Mexican and Mexican
American churches.

Come, O Holy Spirit! Come, help us to be open to the wonder, beauty, and dignity of the
diversity found in each culture, each face, and each experience of the other among us.
Come, O Holy Spirt!
Come, heal the divisions that keep us from seeing the face of Christ in all men, women, and
children.
Come, O Holy Spirit!
Come, free us to stand with and for those who must leave their own lands in order to find work
and security.
Come, O Holy Spirit!
Come, bring us understanding, inspiration, wisdom, and the courage needed to embrace
change and stay on the journey. Come, O Holy Spirit, show us the way.
Come, O Holy Spirit! Amen.

EPISTLE LESSON
1 Corinthians 12: 12-30
Minister Yadi Martinez (9 a.m.)
Isai Thomas-Cazares (11 a.m.)
Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with
Christ. For we were all born by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or
free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of
many. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not
for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not anWorship
eye, Note
I doonnot
p. 3
belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an
eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of
smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as God wanted them
to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one
body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t
need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the
parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable
are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has
put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no
division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers,
every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of
Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second
prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different
kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have
gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? Now eagerly desire the greater gifts. And yet
I will show you the most excellent way.

Mark 12: 28-31

God be with you.
And also with you.
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark.
Glory to you, O God.
One of the teachers of religious law was standing there listening to the debate. Realizing that Jesus had
answered well, he asked, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” Jesus replied, “The
most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! God is the one and only God. And you must
love your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is
equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

This is the Gospel of Hope.
Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit.
Many Gifts, One Spirit (on page 2)
This well-known Anthem with words and music by Allen Pote is a choral prayer for unity addressed to God. Although we are many different people with
many different gifts, we are reminded of what we hold in common, which is that we are all members of the family of God on unique spiritual journeys
that lead to God’s throne. Allen Pote (b. 1945) was born in Kansas and educated at Texas Christian University. A Fulbright Scholar, he studied in Brussels,
Belgium, and took advanced work at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is currently a full-time composer living in Pensacola, Florida, where,
with his wife Susan, he is co-director of the Pensacola Children’s Choir.

TO OUR GUESTS
Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open Communion. We understand the sharing of
the bread and the cup in Jesus’ name to be a representation of an ancient vision
of God’s feast for all people. We don’t require you to be a member of this church,
or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at
the ushers’ direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, the minister will place it on
your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your
hands in front of you as you come to receive Communion.
Diverse in Culture, Nation, Race
Diverse in culture, nation, race, we come together by your grace.
God, let us be a meeting ground where hope and healing love are found.
God, let us be a bridge of care connecting people everywhere.
Help us confront all fear and hate and lust for power that separate.
God, let us be a table spread with gifts of love and broken bread,
where all find welcome, grace attends, and enemies arise as friends.

Be Thou My Vision
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that thou art:
Thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Will you guide me when I can’t see? Please, Lord, lead me; You’re all that I need.
¿Me guiarás cuando no puedo ver? Oh Dios, guiame; Te necesito.
Riches I heed not, nor life’s empty praise, thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and thou only, first in my heart, Great God of heaven, my treasure thou art.
Will you guide me when I can’t see? Please, Lord, lead me; You’re all that I need.
¿Me guiarás cuando no puedo ver? Oh Dios, guiame; Te necesito.
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart.

Bobby Jo Valentine in Concert
T
Taizé is co-sponsored by Evensong
and the CoH Order of St. Francis and
St. Clare.
TONIGHT, September 27, Interfaith Peace Chapel, 7:30 p.m.
he story of Bobby Jo Valentine is a rare one: it’s about vulnerability and courage, raw talent and hard work. With
truly transcendent lyrics and a voice that touches the soul, Bobby captures the heart of audiences across the country.
His songs — all based on highly personal experiences — contain nuggets of pure gold, resonating in and reaching the
listener, no matter their walk of life.
Bobby Jo is a master lyricist. His sense of realism, charm and infectious vocal melodies have earned the praises of industry veterans like Brian Lucey, mastering engineer for The Shins and The Black Keys: “Bobby writes with a sweetness
and honesty seldom heard in acoustic pop music.” Just as importantly, those same attributes have earned Bobby Jo an
ever-expanding fan base and the West Coast Songwriter Association’s Songwriter of the Year Award.
Bobby Jo’s albums have garnered overwhelmingly positive reviews, but more noteworthy are the responses to his honest, raw, resonating live performances. Dubbed “The nicest guy ever to pick up an acoustic guitar” by LA Weekly, his
unique brand of hopeful folk/pop has also recently been featured in a commercial for the new Ford Fusion.
Visit Bobby’s website at www.bobbyjovalentine.com/ to find out more. This is a free concert and all are welcome. A
love offering will be taken.

“What’s Gender Got To Do With It?” Art Show
TODAY through Sunday, October 4,
Fellowship Hall & Hall of Heroes
The show features the art of Dr. Jen Welter, the first woman to enter the NFL
as a coach. Dr. Jen is joined by a roster of other artists who believe in breaking
barriers and making a difference. Etched in the record books as the first female
coach in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals and breaking a nearly impossible
physical barrier in the history of modern day sports, Dr. Jen Welter is the first
women to play running back in a men’s professional football season. Upon finishing her glass-ceiling shattering season in men’s professional football, Dr. Jen
broke yet another barrier in the sport commonly referred to as the final frontier
for women in sports, by becoming the first female coach of a professional football team. Now the world will find out that the coach also paints.

Black Tie Dinner
s a beneficiary of the Black Tie Dinner (BTD) this year, CoH will receive a
percentage from all tickets sold by our organization.
CoH has 9.5 paid tables, 6 reserved
and 51 raffle tickets sold.
How can you help? Buy a raffle ticket to win a 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLA250
or GLA250.. Only 1,500 raffle tickets are available. Tickets are $100 each and
can be purchased from our Black Tie Dinner representative here today or online
at http://blacktie.org/raffle/coh.
How the raffle works. During the course of the year, twenty tickets are pulled
from a hopper. All tickets purchased prior to the day of each pull are eligible for
that drawing (excluding those tickets already drawn). During the Dinner, a final
drawing from the twenty tickets pulled will decide the winner of the vehicle.
Therefore, “buy early, and buy often!”
Other ways you can help - sign up to become a Table Captain at

corporate sponsor or volunteer!
Dreaming…About Adult Education…
Spiritual Location is a way of thinking about where we’d like to go with God.
Where are you on your faith journey? Are you searching or changing? Perhaps
you want to work at connecting or listening to God. Maybe you feel the need
to give of yourself and serve others. It might be that you’re preparing to begin
a new spiritual journey.
•
Do you struggle with what you believe?
•
Are you experiencing transformation in your faith life?
•
Would you like to explore your faith with others?
•
Do you want to quiet your life so you may hear God?
•
Are you ready to “live your faith”?
•
Might you be called to spiritual leadership?
To use part of a UCC motto, “no matter where you are on life’s journey” we
want to help you grow through Adult Education opportunities here at Cathedral
of Hope. We’re planning to embark on a new Spiritual and Educational adventure soon. More to come…check back here next Sunday.
If you have already purchased your tickets, but not from Leslie Frye, please
contact Leslie at lesfrye@gmail.com so he knows how many tickets have been
purchased on behalf of CoH.
Greening Tip
Mosquitoes are attracted by many fragrances, such as those found in
shampoos and sunscreens, so try using more environmentally friendly
fragrance-free products.

Teen Pride
2015
athedral of Hope Youth Ministry
will like to thank our congregation for their prayers and support. On
September 20 we opened the Interfaith
Peace Chapel and surrounding area
to host Teen Pride. Approximately
200 Teens from all around the DFW
Metroplex came out to enjoy a day of
festivities and entertainment in a safe
space. Despite protestors, the teens
and families were safe surrounded
by a wall of love. Many adults from
the LGBTQ Community and Allies
stood around the area to keep protestors away and our teens safe. We thank
you on behalf of the Queer Youth
Coalition and Cathedral of Hope
Youth Ministry.
Children’s Church
Since Medieval times, the so-called Seven Deadly Sins have been symbolized in
stories and pictures by a variety of animals. We continue our lesson series featuring contemporary animal fables called Fables of Choice, teaching twenty-first century children about these Seven Very Bad Choices. The cow is the
animal symbol for Lust and in the case of children as with adults, lust has many
targets; lust of power, lust for fame, amorous lust, lust for attention. Our emphasis is that lust is any desire that is hard or impossible to control. In the story of
the Clinging Cow, we meet a lonely bovine who has a lust for acceptance and
companionship. When a turkey wanders under her fence, she immediately wants
him to never leave her presence; to be her constant companion, her best friend
forever. The turkey, however, is not nearly as enamored with the idea as she is.
Christmas Program Planning Team
Thursdays, IPC Conference Room A/B, 6 p.m.
Do you have a burning interest to participate in a brand new theatrical
production? This year during Advent and Christmas time, we are planning a
special holiday treat for all of our congregations, but especially for our children
and families, as members from all three Sunday services are joining together
to produce a new kind of Christmas program. On Thursday evenings from 6
p.m. - 8 p.m. this month, all are invited to attend one of our bi-lingual planning
sessions.
To express interest in this opportunity, print the Keywords: CHRISTMAS
Each week, Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create PROGRAM in the comments section of the registration pad or contact
