UNFORGETTABLE ENCOUNTERS WITH ORPHANED ELEPHANTS
KENYA, June 3 - 11, 2016
A rare and intimate opportunity to meet
these courageous survivors, now safely
in the highly skilled and loving care of
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
The Trust’s authentic conservation work
of rescue, rehabilitation, and release
back into the wild, opens the heart and
gives hope for the future.
About the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is today the most successful Orphan-Elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the
world and one of the pioneering conservation organisations
for wildlife and habitat protection in East Africa.
At the heart of the DSWT’s conservation activities is
the Orphans’ Project, which has achieved world-wide
acclaim through its hugely successful Elephant and
rhino rescue and rehabilitation program.
The Orphans’ Project exists to offer hope for the future
of Kenya’s threatened Elephant and rhino populations as
they struggle against the threat of poaching for their ivory
and horn, and the loss of habitat due to human population
pressures and conflict, deforestation and drought.

ITINERARY
Day Two, June 4, continued:
Day One, June 3
When you arrive you will be met at the airport
and driven to the Serena Hotel with nothing else
to do but unwind from the flight. You may wish
to pre-book a massage, or relax in the sauna,
take a swim, or simply catch up on sleep.
After lunch is the first private meeting with
the youngest Orphans, at the Trust’s Nairobi
Nursery. We’ll witness their touching mid
afternoon bottle feed, and then spend time
intimately interacting and getting to know these
remarkable animals - their gentle, playful and
inquisitive trunks - the soft backsides of their
ears - their natural capacity for play, and love
for each other. They truly model, and teach us
human animals about being in community!
Day Two, June 4
During a leisurely breakfast we’ll expand further
about the safari, get to know each other, and
hear from each participant about what is
important about coming on this trip. Together
we’ll plan our time between visits with the
Elephants, allowing space for quiet time, meditation, relaxing by the pool, and optional classes in
Feldenkrais and Interspecies Communication.
After their 3 pm feed two babies lie down to enjoy rolling on
the damp muddy earth together...
Day Three, June 5:
Day Four - Seven, June 6 - 9:
We’ll set off at 7 am, driving 6 hours to Tsavo
National Park, to the Sheldrick’s private new
Ithumba Hill Tented Camp, where we spend the
next 5 nights. After lunch, with time to settle in,
we’ll meet the older Orphans at 5 pm on their
return from a day in the bush accompanied by
their deeply committed and loving Keepers.
Here we witness their bottle feed in the safety
and security of the stockade, their night shelter.
These older Orphans are preparing for their
release back into the wild.
At 6 am we’ll join the Elephants at the
stockade for their first bottle feed before
setting off for their day in the bush. We watch
them head out accompanied by their Keepers
who ensure their safety throughout the day.
Returning for a hearty breakfast we relax until
meeting them again for the 11 am feed, at a
large water hole. After drinking two litres of soy
based formula, they happily head to the water
to splash and play in the mud, followed by a
dust bath to cover their heads and backs as
protection from the sun.
Day Four - Seven, June 6 - 9, continued:
Here, the Orphans are often joined by
released ex-Orphans, and sometimes wild
male Elephants turn up, curious to check
out the young Orphans. This is an incredible
experience to witness - Orphans, ex-Orphans,
and wild Elephants - all coming together.
Sometimes the Orphans are curious and boldly
approach the wild Elephants, who have been
known to “nick” these young ones, only to be
returned to the stockade the next day by the
watchful ex-Orphans, who know they are not
ready yet to live in the wild.
As the days unfold at Tsavo, we begin to get to
know the Ithumba Orphans individually, and learn
more from the Head Keeper, Benjamin, whose
wise understanding is steeped in experience.
Day Eight, June 10:
Having farewelled the older Orphans the evening
before, we set off early to arrive in time to
reconnect with the younger Orphans for their mid
afternoon bottle feed at the Nairobi nursery.
Day Nine - June 11
Nairobi Departure
After breakfast, relax and enjoy the hotel
facilities before your flight home, unless you
are going on another safari!
Alternatively, take a tour of Nairobi National Park
or visit other attractions in Nairobi.
Later, you will be transferred to Jomo Kenyatta
International Airport for your outbound flight.

Message from Lynn Birks who visited in 2015:
“If your soul longs for a place of spaciousness
and peace, this part of the planet more than
provides. Experience the expanse of wilderness
that is Tsavo East. Savour encounters with young
Elephants of the DSWT. Each individual provides
a deeply stirring, nurturing, and incomparable
inter-species connection. This is a once in a
lifetime opportunity. Go!!”
