Miramar Retreat Center, Duxbury, MA

Today’s Liturgy
Luke 4:21-30
Chapter 4 of Luke introduces Jesus' adult life. It
begins with forty days of fasting (Luke 4:1-13)
and Jesus' return to his homeland of Nazareth in
Galilee, where he begins teaching in the synagogues (Luke 4:14-30). The fasting is reminiscent
of the beginning of Moses' and Elijah's prophetic
lives. Jesus reads a quote from the prophet Isaiah
in verses 17-19, and he mentions the prophet Elisha in verse 27. The chapter seems to be setting
up the audience to understand Jesus as one of
God's anointed, a prophet in a tradition with a
long line of prophets. Interestingly, though, the
focus here is not on the successes or failures of the
prophets, or on the salvation or redemption of
God's people, but rather on the fact that the
prophet will be rejected by his own people. More
curious, the natives in Jesus' town of Nazareth
actually don't reject him at all: “all spoke well of
him and were amazed.” That is, until Jesus provokes them into rejecting him. He essentially says
to them “I didn't come here to save you, because
according to history you will not listen, so I'm
going to head back south.” Of course they would
be angry!
I am assuming that this part of the story was
meant to have some narrative effect on its listeners, and I wonder why the author of Luke chose
this route instead of the traditional one where the
people's first response was rejection. I am left with
a question: What is there to gain from this twist
on the story?

1ra. lectura: (Jer. 1, 4-5. 17-19) La primera lectura nos
habla de la vocación de un gran profeta Jeremías, su misión, sus pruebas y la continua protección de Dios.
2da. lectura: (1Corintios 12, 31-13, 13) Es el himno del
amor: Las cualidades que debe tener el amor y lo que no
es amor.
Evangelio: (Lucas 1, 1-4; 4, 21-30) Como Jeremías, en la
primera lectura, Cristo no es bien recibido en su propia
tierra. Llenos de ira arrojaron a Cristo fuera de la ciudad.

DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO
17. La Cuaresma de este Año Jubilar sea vivida con mayor intensidad, como momento fuerte para celebrar y experimentar la misericordia de Dios. ¡Cuántas páginas de
la Sagrada Escritura pueden ser meditadas en las semanas
de Cuaresma para redescubrir el rostro misericordioso del
Padre! Con las palabras del profeta Miqueas también nosotros podemos repetir: Tú, oh Señor, eres un Dios que
cancelas la iniquidad y perdonas el pecado, que no mantienes para siempre tu cólera, pues amas la misericordia.
Tú, Señor, volverás a compadecerte de nosotros y a tener
piedad de tu pueblo. Destruirás nuestras culpas y arrojarás
en el fondo del mar todos nuestros pecados (cfr 7,18-19).
Las páginas del profeta Isaías podrán ser meditadas con
mayor atención en este tiempo de oración, ayuno y caridad: « Este es el ayuno que yo deseo: soltar las cadenas
injustas, desatar los lazos del yugo, dejar en libertad a los
oprimidos y romper todos los yugos; compartir tu pan con
el hambriento y albergar a los pobres sin techo; cubrir al
que veas desnudo y no abandonar a tus semejantes.
La narración del evangelio del domingo pasado se
nos quedó interrumpida, partida por la mitad, para
quedar completada con la escena que nos presenta
hoy la liturgia. El texto de la otra semana, en efecto,
concluía con estas palabras de Jesús: "Hoy se cumple
esta Escritura que acabáis de oír". Y hoy inicia con
estas mismas palabras, como retomando la escena,
para hacernos recordar dónde nos habíamos quedado.
"Todos en la sinagoga -nos dice Lucas- le expresaban su aprobación y se admiraban de las palabras de
gracia que salían de sus labios". Todo iba tan bien
cuando, de pronto, comienzan los problemas para
Jesús. Pero lo curioso es que, leyendo el evangelio,
parece que es Jesús el que "provoca" a sus paisanos y
les dirige una diatriba, echándoles en cara su incredulidad: "Sin duda me recitaréis aquel refrán -les reprocha nuestro Señor-: "Médico, cúrate a ti mismo";
haz también aquí en tu tierra los milagros que hemos
oído que has hecho en Cafarnaúm". El problema entonces no estaba en Jesús, sino en la incredulidad de
sus oyentes. Y cuando una persona está cerrada en
sus prejuicios y actitudes, tristemente, no hay nada
que hacer, a menos que cambie de postura. Y éste fue
el escenario con el que se encontró nuestro Señor.
Por eso Jesús no hizo allí ningún milagro: porque les
faltaba fe. Y enseguida comenzó a recordarles el
ejemplo de la viuda de Sarepta y de Naamán el sirio.
Esa gente había recibido favores especiales de parte
de Dios, y no eran del pueblo judío. Pero tenían fe.
"Está claro -diría Pedro, después de Pentecostés, hablando a los judíos convertidos de la primitiva Iglesia
- que Dios no hace acepción de personas, sino que
acepta a todo el que lo teme y practica la justicia, sea
de la nación que sea" (Hech 10, 35). Dios no hace
distinciones por motivos de linaje, raza, cultura o religión. Los judíos se sentían superiores a los demás
porque ellos eran el "pueblo elegido". Y a los nazaretanos les pasaba ahora algo semejante: los típicos
celos y rivalidades de pueblo, las envidias, riñas y
pleitos partidistas tan propios de las aldeas… y no
sólo de las aldeas, pues también se dan entre ciudades y entre países vecinos. ¡Es un mal que todos llevamos metido en la médula de los huesos! "A oír estas palabras de Jesús -continúa la narración- todos en
la sinagoga se pusieron furiosos y, levantándose, lo
empujaron fuera del pueblo con la intención de despeñarlo". ¡Hasta dónde es capaz de llegar la soberbia,
el odio y la cerrazón del corazón del hombre! Aquel
encuentro, que comenzó como un poema o un idilio,
estuvo a punto de convertirse en una tragedia. Lo que
inició en aprobación y admiración, termina en rechazo y en odio. Así sucede cuando no se tiene fe.
