Baylor Hospital President/CEO to Speak
The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce luncheon in July will feature
Baylor Hospital. President and CEO,
Doug Lawson, will update the business community on their expansion
project now as well as in the future.
As a major asset in our community,
it is important to become informed
on what is offered to our citizens
and businesses when it comes to
quality healthcare. As the Baylor system grows, so to does our ability to
attract new economic development
projects. While schools may be the
first draw for a relocation, healthcare comes in a close second.
Doug Lawson is the President of
Baylor Regional Medical Center at
Grapevine. His primary responsibility
is to help Baylor Grapevine achieve
its vision of being the best place
to give and receive safe, quality
and compassionate health care. He
joined Baylor Health Care System
as the President at Baylor Grapevine
in 2007, and has worked in health
care management for 17 years. Doug received a bachelor’s degree
in political science at Texas A&M
University and earned a master of
health care administration degree
from Trinity University. He is a
Fellow of the American College of
Healthcare Executives. He serves
on numerous local boards, including the Grapevine Chamber of
Commerce, GRACE, and the Leukemia Lymphoma Society – North
Texas Chapter. He was named as
a 2008 “Health Care Hero” by the
Dallas Business Journal. Doug and
his wife Jennifer have one son,
Jack, and live in Grapevine, Texas.
The July Chamber Luncheon will
be held at the Grapevine Convention Center on Thursday, July 16th
(note the change of week!), from
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The cost is
$15 if reservations are made on or
before July 14th, or $20 if you register after that day or at the door.
Remember that this is a great
time to come and meet fellow
Chamber members and pass out
your business cards. We all like to
do business with people we know!
Leadership Grapevine 2009 - 2010
This month’s article is about a
great program for anyone who is
interested in learning about the many
different areas of responsibility that
function simultaneously to make
our city and the entire Metroplex a
great place to live.
Jan Smith and her team have truly
raised the bar with the new leadership
program. Alumni of past Leadership offerings have worked hard
to design a new program that will
be much more meaningful in terms
of leadership development for all
the participants. The program will
be a view of leadership not only in
Grapevine but throughout the surrounding areas.
The sessions, which begin on
August 20th and run through April
2010, will include aspects of the
County and how the surrounding
cities work together in joint leadership
decisions for the good of all. The
participants will travel throughout
the County and receive the most
up-to-date information from the
key leaders responsible for subjects
such as “the DFW Connector”, DFW
Airport leadership and initiatives,
Tourism, Economic Development
opportunities, Legislative initiatives
impacting our area, etc.
The main difference between this
new program and its predecessor is
the network is much broader and the
participants are going to meet new
key leadership contacts throughout
the area that have not been introduced before. Also, each session is
planned with a full days worth of
activities each month. Previous leadership programs were only 3 hours
per session. Each month, the class
will cover one of the following topics:
City Day / Economic Development
• Public Safety
• Education
• Media
• Transportation
• Health & Human Services
• Legislative/County
• Arts & Culture/Tourism
The program is limited to 25
people and the deadline for registration is July 31, 2009. If you would
like to sponsor someone or be a
candidate yourself, please contact
the Chamber office at 817-481-1522
for all the details.
Please take advantage of your
membership as there are so many
opportunities to network and get
involved. Always remember, “The
Grapevine Chamber, it’s all about you”.

Chamber Committees
The Program of Work for the Grapevine Chamber is designed, scheduled and
coordinated by business members to help them with their business and their fellow
members through networking, education and cooperation. Take time to review YOUR
Chamber’s activities and determine how they might work for you, also.
Networking Groups
Tuesday Chair - Steve Jenkins, Asset Preservation Group
Thursday Chair - Lavon Bolech, Keller Williams
The Grapevine Chamber is fortunate to have two very active Networking Groups. The Tuesday group meets on the
first and third Tuesdays of the month, 7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. at Grapevine Diner, 3105 Ira E Woods #120. The Thursday Networking Group has changed and is now meeting at 11:30 a.m. on the 4th Thursday of the month at Willhoite’s.
Both groups provide 30 second commercials for attendees, as well as encourage one on one networking.
Business Solutions
Members Providing Answers
Thursday, August 27th will be the next meeting for the “Business Solutions Committee”. They meet from 8 a.m.
to 9 a.m. with a varity of topics and facilitators. Their goal is to discuss solutions for our business issues. This new
Chamber committee is open to all Chamber members, so put it on your calendar and plan to not only hear some
ideas, but to add a few of your own.
Senior Services Alliance
Chair - Patrick Shanahan, Senior Helpers
For those businesses, who specifically provide services to adult seniors in the Grapevine Chamber area, this
committee is for you. Patrick Shanahan brought the idea to the Chamber to bring those businesses together to
learn what is being offered, and to develop ways to promote and expand their services. They will meet on the
second Wednesday of each month, 9:00 a.m. at the Chamber.
Grapevine Chamber of Commerce Women’s Division
June has come and gone and the summer heat is here! The Women’s Division membership continues to grow and is also
heating up for the year. We now have 94 members with 75 renewals and 19 new members. Jan Smith, our President-Elect,
is doing a fantastic job with the membership and will be getting our directory ready to send out this month. It’s never to late
to join, just go to our web site and download an application. It’s a great way to become involved in our community.
The board has voted to change our calendar year to coincide with the Grapevine Chamber. This has been done for
accounting purposes and for the Women’s Division representation on the Chamber board. This will be a short year for
this board, but I’m very happy to say that this has been a smooth transition. The guidelines are being updated and will
be available when the new directory is emailed to our membership. The guidelines will also be available on our web site
at www.grapeavinechamber-womensdivision.com.
The month of June was busy with the collecting of Second Chance School Supplies, organizational meetings for
SeniorFest, Christmas in July and Anniversary Ball. Our luncheon program was guest speaker, Janice Kane, who is
Executive Director of the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Education Foundation. She presented an informative overview of
the history, strategy and challenges of the Education Foundation. Our congratulations go to Janice for receiving the 2009
Distinguished Friend award at the Education Foundation Grapevine-Colleyville 2009 Academic Recognition Banquet.
In July and August the ladies from the Women’s Division will be asking for donations of $20.00 or a new backpack
at the Chamber luncheons. The need this year has grown over 20% for school supplies. Please make this generous
donation to help our school children in need this coming school year.
Congratulations go to Kathee Livengood for a fantastic job in putting on the Relay for Life event in Grapevine. She
raised over $50,000 for the American Cancer Society. The Women’s Division received the award for “Best Cruisin Team”
at the event. Thanks go to everyone who helped make this event such a success!
Our next luncheon will be July 21st. Reservations can be made by email to Jan Smith at rbsjss@verizon.net or by
calling 214-202-8700. Candy Letica

Business of the
Quarter Celebrated!
At the June luncheon, the Chamber recognized the “Business of the Quarter”,
which for this quarter ended up being two different companies. For any of
you who have worked in the Chamber’s concession trailer (fondly called the
“Dog Wagon”), you know that it needed some work. For anyone who worked
at Main Street Days, you can thank both Classic Chevrolet as well as, Blagg
Tire and Service for the transformation. The membership thanked them with
the Business of the Quarter recognition.
Classic Chevrolet agreed to cover the costs
for the roof repairs, as well as the new paint job
on the trailer. With a wet Saturday this year at
Main Street Days, everyone was pleased that
there were no leaks on the volunteers! Not
only did Classic Chevrolet cover the cost, they
transported the trailer to the repair shop, paid
the bills, and when it was fixed, they transported it to and from Main Street
Days and took an entire shift!
Blagg Tire & Service stepped forward with
one of their many companies and got a great
bid for the actual paint job. When they hauled it
back to the Chamber, they took it by their shop
to put new tires on the trailer and did some
much needed maintenance on the wheels.
As one of the major fund raising mechanisms
for the Chamber, through the voluteer efforts
at Main Street Days and Grapefest, the concession trailer has served us
well, but it definitely needed a makeover. With the efforts of Classic
Chevrolet and Blagg Tire, it made this year’s events much more pleasant
and safer! Next time you see C.W. Higgins or Ken Thompson at Classic,
Perry Leonard, Wanda or Gary Blagg, please thank them for going above
and beyond for the Grapevine Chamber!
Must Be Present to
Win Drawing Still
Growing!!!
Again, those in attendance at the June luncheon want to thank
Alan Holder with Sunrise Construction & Roofing for NOT
attending, because his name was drawn for the “Must Be Present
to Win” drawing. Since he was not there, the $250 was placed
back into the bowl, and the July luncheon drawing will be for
$300! This amount will continue to grow monthly until someone’s
name is drawn who is in attendance. All Chamber member names
are in the drawing which is sponsored by the Grand Prairie Air
Hogs Baseball Team, and they
hope you are able to “catch” the
drawing each month!

THE GRAPEVINE COMMUNITY
DIRECTORY & REFERRAL GUIDE IS CHANGING
The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announced that this year’s Community Directory and Referral Guide will be produced
by the Chamber of Commerce, its staff and several of our local members. Chamber member’s information from the Chamber database and what
is on the Chamber’s website is what will be used for production. All business investors who are members of the Chamber will be listed in the
directory alphabetically, by category and in a who’s who listing. This new listing will contain all of the individual members names, so that if you
meet someone at a chamber event, but cannot remember their company name, you can look them up by last name!
This Community Directory and Referral Guide publication is a great business tool as Chamber members use it to refer business. These books
are used for new businesses and citizens who come to the community looking for products and services as they begin to enjoy our wonderful city
through our relocation packets. This is the book that is also used for the thousands of relocation packets sent out each year by request. Additions
to the directory will include more demographic and community information.
This publication will be full-color, high-tech and high quality! It will be a marketing opportunity for you to promote your company in one of
our chamber’s most in demand publications. It will promote our entire community in a style that will make you proud. The Chamber staff will
also be looking for new photos of our area for the publication. If you have a photo or photos you would like to have considered, send them to the
chamber office in hard copy or via e-mail in .jpg format.
The production of this Directory and Referral Guide will be supported solely by advertising revenues, with rates from $350 to $6,000. Several
people have asked about the change in cost for ad sizes. This year’s book will become a full size publication, to allow for great detail, information,
photos and company visibility. If you would like to see a sample of what the book will look like, you can come by or call the Chamber office.
If you would like to be a bigger part of this valuable and informative new Directory by placing an ad, or if you have an idea for content that you
feel would be beneficial for the publication, you can contact the Chamber by calling (817) 481-1522 or email: RaDonna@GrapevineChamber.org
to set up an appointment or to receive more information. Chamber staff member, Marti Pevehouse, or Board of Director member, Rick Lawlis, will
contact you for your appointment or for details. The ad deadline is October 1, 2009.
Main Street Days
The Grapevine Chamber of Commerce members were out on Main Street in large numbers in
May. Between those who worked the “Beverage” Booth and those who worked in the Concession
Trailer (fondly called the “Dog Wagon”), the Chamber met its budget for this fun, but soggy
event! Several businesses took entire shifts to support the Chamber and community – wearing their
company shirts and having their business name displayed on the trailer and booth. According to the
Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, Friday and Sunday had over 30% more attendance, which helped
cover the 70% decrease in attendance from Saturday.
Now is the time for you to mark your calendar for Grapefest, September 17 – 20th! The volunteer
schedules have been adjusted to meet the festival times and to make the shifts equal. Contact Kathly
Lawlor at the Chamber office, 817-481-1522, to schedule your company to volunteer for an entire shift
or if you, your family or friends want to just get involved in a wonderful community event.

LEADERSHIP GRAPEVINE
A Changing Program
of Changing Times
Leadership Grapevine is an educational program jointly
presented by the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce and the City
of Grapevine. In this innovative leadership development program,
citizens and current community leaders learn about municipal
government, economic development and cultural opportunities
within Grapevine. As a major change, this year’s program will also
include a regional approach, with expansion of the topics into the
entire DFW area.
Each class day will have a different topic, including: economic
development, transportation, education, tourism, arts & culture,
criminal justice, safety, health & human services, legislation,
county and media. The days are being organized by teams
from the Leadership Alumni who are graduates
of the program. There will also be class
discussions on the John Maxwell Book, 21
Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.
The class includes hands-on activities, a
community service project and field trips
touring city development. Participants will
get an insider’s point of view of current and future
happenings in Grapevine. Also, the time spent with classmates is
a great opportunity to network with other community leaders and
business owners.
The Leadership Grapevine kick-off will be Thursday, August
20th. Classes will meet on Thursdays through May. New for this
year, the class will meet one day per month, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Dress will be business attire unless otherwise noted by the class
agendas. Starting locations will vary depending on the topic/program.
“Leadership Grapevine is a great opportunity for the business
community to learn first-hand about economic, civic and cultural
activities that directly impact them,” says Kristine Amador, 2008
Chairman of the Board, Grapevine Chamber of Commerce. “This
program is also offered to all citizens or those who do business in
our community who are interested in developing leadership skills
for public service in the community.”
“Participants will have one-on-one time with city leaders and
department heads throughout the program,” says Jennifer Hibbs,
Assistant City Manager. “Also, there will be field trips to see City
Parks’ programs, business development corridors and much
more...which are all great fun. Please join us.”
The cost for the program is $400 for the
entire year. The registration deadline will be
July 31, 2009. Applications will be available
at the Chamber office by calling 817-481-1522

Seize the Opportunity...
In tight economic times, businesses tend to do one of two things. Some companies cut back on everything, from employees to marketing. Others – seize the
opportunity to review their marketing budget and look to find ways to extend and expand their reach.
A business investment in the Grapevine Chamber of Commerce provides several different avenues of marketing. There is the no cost handshake and
introduction at the networking groups, mixers and committee meetings. There is the opportunity to advertise in the Chamber’s foyer, displaying business cards
and brochures. There is the low cost avenue of attending Chamber luncheons, to pass out your business cards. And then there are several sponsorships which
allow you a variety of ways to promote and market your business. While looking at the last half of 2009, or planning your budget for 2010 – consider the
following ways to expand your Chamber investment:
Chamber Luncheon Sponsorship - $500. Sponsoring Company is allowed to distribute brochures, promotional items or any other marketing on the
luncheon tables. Sponsor is allowed a three minute “commercial” to address the attendees. Sponsor is listed in the newsletter, on the luncheon program as well
as on the luncheon Power Point. Three dates remain for 2009.
Business After Hours Mixers - Cost is location, food & beverages. Businesses are scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. “mixer” at their place of business. The
Chamber promotes the event through the calendar, newsletter and email reminders. Businesses are encouraged to not only invite Chamber members, but to also
expand their invitations to invite their customers. Great way to get potential customers into your restaurant or business. Three dates remain available for 2009.
New Member Breakfast Sponsor - Cost is for the breakfast, whether you provide it at your location/restaurant, or pay for it to be delivered and served. A
great way to get your company and employees in front of new members of the Chamber. Be the first to welcome new members and provide them with information on how to use their membership. One date open for 2009.
Bronze, Silver & Gold Chamber Sponsors - $1,850, $2,500, $4,000. Levels of sponsorships that include tickets/participation for various chamber events
depending on the level chosen. A great way to market your business with a pre-determined list of involvement to keep you visible throughout the year, without
having to “check the budget”. Sponsors are listed on almost all printed Chamber materials (newsletter, luncheon program and powerpoint, website and soon to
be highlighted in the Chamber directory!) For specific details, contact the Chamber staff.
For the cost of a one time ad in a newspaper, on the radio or television – finding ways to market your business through the Grapevine Chamber is affordable
and effective!

Towards
Success
The Grapevine Chamber Members continue to have a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge and success
through books. On Wednesday, August 12, members can join with various city department heads to participate in an
Executive Book Briefing headed by Randy Mayeux of Strategic Government Resources. Randy conducts a monthly book
review for the Park Cities CEOs. He is also well-known and popular with successful business executives in the Metroplex.
The Wednesday events are held from 8 - 9:30 a.m., every other month at the Betsy Mitchell House, 411 Ball Street (at
Grapevine’s Botanical Gardens). The cost is $20 per person and includes a continental breakfast. A book is reviewed every other month, with Randy providing great thoughts, insight and highlighted portions of
books that are current in the development of business leaders throughout the world! If you are like me, and love
to read, but don’t have the time, this is for you! If you are not like me, and you don’t like to read, this is for you.
Randy takes the time, does the research and gives us a synopsis of what he considers the finer points made by the
author. After each meeting, you can then use those notes, or get the book and read it more in-depth as you grow
your business or your personal success.
Another great aspect of this format it that as he reviews, those in attendance have the opportunity to discuss what they
think about the ideas presented and how it relates to their lives, community and work environment for success under
the direction of Ron Holifield. For those in the business community, this also allows us to get to know those individuals
who work for the City, their departments and helps us to develop a basis for communication and growth!
There will be limited seating on this in the future, so if you would like to participate, call the Chamber to make your
reservations at 817-481-1522 or RSVP by email to: klawlor@grapevinechamber.org. Payment must be made to secure
your reservation.
