IB as a programme provides its pupils with preparation for university and much more. It also includes a programme called CAS in which you have to complete a minimum of 150 hours long-term and short-term activities of Creativity, Action and Service—the initials of which make up the title ‗CAS‘. As IB pupils, we are a family and from the beginning of the year, we have attended many events as a whole. The events that we participated in this semester were: ―Walking for the cancer patients‖, ―Christos Steliou Ioannou Bazaar‖, ― Dog shelter week‖ (at school), ―Fun day‖ (at school), ―Fundraiser for the elderly people of Egkomi‖, ―Dogathon‖,
―Radiomarathon‖ and ―Give Hope to Maria week‖ (at school).

“Dog shelter week”
The dog shelter week took place
from the 2nd of October until the 5th
of October in our school. During this
week many of us had different responsibilities such as to print t-shirts,
bake cookies and to decorate the
poster and the donation box. All of
our effort was concentrated on one
serious aim, to sell everything that
we made (cookies, cupcakes etc.) in
order to raise money and donate it
to the Nicosia Dog Shelter.

―Give Hope to Maria week‖ (at school)
From October 29th until November 2nd all of
our 5IB class with the help of Ms Nectaria,
planned a week-long fundraiser in school to
help a fellow student from PASCAL Lemesos
named Maria, who was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout the week we organised
many events such as a bake sale, raffle
draw and the designing of a banner to raise
money. We managed to raise 2600 euros
with the help of the teachers, the students
and the Parents and Guardians Association.
“Christos Steliou Ioannou Bazaar”
On Sunday, October 7th, 2012 we all attended the Christos
Steliou Ioannou bazaar. We had the help of the 6IB pupils
who were our group leaders for the day. Some of us were
selling kebabs, others were collecting money at the horse
riding stand, others were dressed up as clowns entertaining
children and collecting donations and others were standing
at the bouncing game helping the little ones on and off. We
all had the opportunity to talk to the people from the institution
with special needs
or disabilities. When we talked to them, they seemed so
happy and really showed us appreciation for accepting
them for what they are and giving them the love they
needed. We spent time talking and laughing with them.
One of them named George, actually sang to us and invited us to the institution‘s Christmas bazaar that will
take place in December. The experience was inspiring,
emotional, exhilarating and made all of us feel proud of
what we did to help.

Captains Campaign:
This year, 6th formers interested in running for House
Captain took part in the ―captains campaign‖ . This new
idea allowed the pupils to meet the candidates who were
going to be running for House Captain prior to the House
Captain Elections. Tables were set up during break time
for each House and all the prospective sixth formers met
and talked to other pupils as to why they should vote for
them in the upcoming elections. In addition, during the
week of elections, pupils wore their House T-shirts in order to show support for their House and raise awareness
for the upcoming elections. Together these two things
helped create a really fun and positive pre –election atmosphere.
October
Cancer Patients and Friends: Over 65 Apollo
pupils took part in a charity fundraising week in
October during which they sold tickets in order to
raise money for The Cyprus Association of Cancer
Patients and Friends. The association is a nonprofit organization which aims to improve and
safeguard the quality of life of cancer patients and
their families.
The pupils of APOLLO House accepted the fund
raising challenge and not only managed to raise
€589 for the charity but also, through their enthusiastic participation, managed to spread awareness and let people of our community know that
we can all help if we take the time to be considerate and compassionate towards those around us.
Elections:
On Thursday 20th September House Elections took
place and the following pupils were selected as Captains:
DEMETRA:
Kyriakos Ioannides 6C and Andrea Pitta 6D
POSEIDON :
Michalis Tziakouris 6C and Chara Stavrinidou
6D
APOLLO:
Andronikos Neophytou 6D and Marina Charalambous 6IB
ARTEMIS:
Antonis Elia 6A and Christiana Georgiadou 6B
Radiomarathon pupils belonging to the Artemis
House took part in a charity fundraising week at the
end of October during which they sold tickets in order
to raise money for The Radiomarathon 2012. The Radiomarathon sensitizes and informs the public on issues regarding children with special needs, thereby
facilitating the change of mentality towards this problem and the reintegration of these persons in the society at large.
The pupils of Artemis House managed to raise €904
for the charity but also, through their enthusiastic participation, managed to draw attention to the plight that
children with special needs face every day.
November
The House Masters of Apollo are working really hard in preparation for Style Vibe which will take place on Friday
25th January 2013.

PASCAL HOUSES’ FUN
DAY
The annual fun day took place on the 13th of
October between 15:00 and 20:00 on our
school premises. This event was organised
jointly by the Houses of PASCAL English School
and PASCAL Greek School Lefkosia. Pupils,
parents and guardians had the opportunity to
spend some time on activities such as: football,
twister, face painting, fishing and other games
while they were entertained by music and
songs by different bands. The organisers received many positive comments about the day
and were commended for their organisation,
enthusiasm and cooperation. The whole event
was different from last year in that all those
that helped were more enthusiastic and confident about what they were doing. The fact
that more money was collected this year is a
result of the enthusiasm shown. Furthermore,
this year 4 girls’ teams took part in the football
tournament which was a positive and entertaining change for the viewers of the matches.
Around 19:00 pm the kebabs were ready and
everyone was very hungry after all the fun!!
When the fun day was over everyone left gaining the best memories. Next year we hope it
will be even better!
GO KARTS Competition at Daytona Raceway
As a captain of DEMETRA House, I enjoy attending school events. The first one
was Go-karts in mid-November. We had a blast! First, we had lunch at our
school and then the bus picked us up and took us to the Daytona Raceway.
Some of our friends also joined us and this
gave us the opportunity to make a team and
take part in a race. The instructors there informed us of safety rules and soon afterwards, we were ready to drive on the track!
We had a wonderful time as we also had fun
with teachers.
It was simply an amazing day!

This year we have seen a change to the clubs both in quantity and in nature. Firstly, the number of
clubs has increased to 40, most of which are non-paying clubs or incur a minimum fee which covers
transportation. The new clubs that were on offer this year to pupils are the following: Fashion, Culture and Society, Writer‘s Club, Football and Racquet Club, Free Diving and Apnea Training, Film Making, Entrepreneurship, Engineering and Biomedical. All these clubs attracted enormous interest and
places filled up quickly.
Some of the existing clubs also changed in content such as the Drama Club which now works towards the production of the annual school play, the Journalism Club which works towards the production of the school‘s newspaper and magazine and the Environmental Club which works towards implementing the environmental policy of the school. This year has also seen a great increase in the number of pupils who registered for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

ECOLOGY FIELD TRIP TO ATHALASSA PARK
A2 Biology pupils participated in an ecology study that took place in Athalassa Park. This activity exhibited the correct methodology of a
fieldwork investigation. It was essential that pupils were able to provide valid and reliable data for their internal assessment practical
investigation, and gain the experience of field data sampling and collection. The field work at actual sites of experimental procedures
provided the pupils with the opportunity to involve themselves in the field Ecology work, have their senses stimulated, and o bserve the
practical application of the methodology, as opposed to a theoretical explanation. Pupils were able to assess the abundance and distribution of organisms (biodiversity count), and measure abiotic factors, such as temperature and light intensity using the appropriately calibrated equipment and applications. Equipment such as probes and sensors were extensively used. The pupils produced record sheets
covering the different species of insects present and the percentage cover of plants in different areas. The field work was very helpful for
the pupils to understand how ecologists work in the field and also for them to gain practical knowledge and collect data for their internal
assessment. Pupils gained knowledge for future experimentation where they may have to deal with living organisms again.

Arsenic and Old Lace
Arsenic and Old Lace is considered one of American theatre's defining dark comedies:
Populated with such delightfully bizarre characters, Kesselring's play excels at undermining social propriety with evil charm. According to the opening night review in The
New York Times, the play was "so funny that none of us will ever forget it‖. Around
70 years later, Arsenic and Old Lace remains funny and provocative, still entertaining
audiences around the world. Our pupils are being given the opportunity to be part of
this international culture, develop their theatre understanding and...laugh their hearts
out! Auditions took place on the 20th of September and many pupils auditioned this
year proving to us that the school play has become a vital part of school life for our
pupils. After the difficult choice of selecting the cast rehearsals take place every Friday
and pupils are working rigorously to prepare for the ultimate performance.

PASCAL English School Lefkosia aims to offer pupils an International outlook to help them in their future endeavours...
For the first time this year the PASCAL schools in Lefkosia were invited to take
part in an event in relation to the Month of German Language 2012 organised by
the Association of German Teachers, the German, Austrian and Swiss Embassies,
PaSch Cyprus and the Goethe Institute Cyprus. During the month of November
various events and exhibitions take place to celebrate the German language and
culture and educate pupils around Cyprus. On the day of the event at our school,
our pupils had the opportunity to win prizes by participating in a general knowledge quiz and then were given a very interesting and informative presentation
about Germany, Austria and Switzerland where they learned about different traditions, music, products, inventions, food and many other interesting facts. The
highlight of the event was the exhibition of our German pupils‘ projects that were
set up in the cafeteria. The students were given one month to prepare and at the
end, a panel of judges selected two projects to take part in the pancyprian competition. We are still awaiting results. but believe that our pupils will do exceptionally well.
Lecture on Language Learning
On Wednesday 31st October pupilsfrom PASCAL English School Lefkosia and
Ελληνική Σχολή ΠΑΣΚΑΛ Λευκωσία had the opportunity to enjoy a lecture
on language learning given by Ms Dorothea Perdiou, former Study Counsellor at the German Embassy and longtime German teacher and Mr. Prodromos Prodromou former member of the EU Parliament, and among many
other things the first president of the association of Graduates of French
and Francophone Universities. The lecture was part of the Languages Department‘s initiative to promote language learning within the school and
to inform pupils about their language
options for the upper school.
Each lecturer spoke about their field
of expertise: Ms Perdiou about the
importance of German language
learning and University studies in
Germany and Mr. Prodromou about
the significance of language learning
in the lives of young Cypriots.
After the lecture pupils approached
the speakers and language teachers
asking questions about their language learning options showing that
the lecture was very informative and effective.

DEBATE
On the 31st of October I had the chance to take part in the 7th annual competition of debate in Greek, which is
organized by the Ministry of Education. I have participated in the competition in the past; however this specific
discussion will remain undoubtedly in my memory. Through the debating process, I‘ve learnt to respect opposite ideas and opinions. As a result my character has developed to a more open-minded one, due to the fact
that I had to be able to defend different views on the given subject. I have developed the ability to understand a variety of perspectives. Moreover, my ability and skills in debating has improved a lot, since throughout the experience I have learnt to manage my stress. Even though I was astonishingly nervous and felt my
hands shaking, as soon as I presented my persuasive arguments, I was determined to make my team and
school proud of me and in the end I managed to conquer my anxiety. Undoubtedly, debating is very useful for
issues that concern us today, since they help us develop our own critical thinking and speak more confidently.
It was an amazing experience, one in which I would like to experience again in the future and recommend this
competition for my fellow classmates, as it is extremely important to have the ability to present your arguments correctly and form your own opinions on several matters!

European Youth Parliament (EYP)
Participating in the 6th Pancyprian EYP session in summer 2012 has been an exciting and a very valuable
experience. The whole session, including the committee work, the team building and the general assembly
were held at the Heritage Private School in Limassol and the accommodation was provided by the Episkopiana
Hotel. During the session we had the chance to meet new people from other countries and other schools,
share interests and ideas and create a lot of friendships.
During the team building games we had the chance to meet our committee better, learn to trust and listen to
each other through the tasks we were assigned to do as a team, which required team work, organising and
planning skills which we developed through the session. During the committee work we deepened our
knowledge and understanding on our subject as we had the chance to discuss other opinions and perspectives
with our team mates arriving at the end at a series of solutions and measures and prepared a resolution. The
different committee topics were based on real European Union issues such as the impact of the economic
crisis on immigration and the increasing amount of waste and pollution. Additionally, every night was themed;
we had a talent show, parties and also a hard rock themed event which was amazing. The final day, the most
interesting one, was the general assembly where the resolutions from all the committees were debated and
voting took place.
In this session, I made a lot of friendships, met a lot of interesting people, improved my public speaking and
debating skills and gained a lot of knowledge on the current issues of the European Union making this an
unforgettable experience.

In June 2012, the annual trip for Year Three pupils took place. This year the destination
was Barcelona, Spain and everyone was really excited as it was the first time PASCAL English School Lefkosia visited the specific destination. The majority of us took this once in a
lifetime opportunity to visit such a beautiful country with our friends and teachers. It was
an unforgettable experience and all of us enjoyed it.
We visited the monument that is still under construction, called ‗La SagradaFamilia‘. The
building of this monument began thousands of years ago and is still being built up to today.
We also visited mount Montjuich, the ‗Camp Nou‘ stadium, Las Ramblas, the museums of
Dali and Picasso, the old University, the ‗Port Aventura‘ theme park, in which we all had a
marvellous time, Girona‘s Cathedral, Fiqueres, Barcelona‘s aquarium, and strolled around in
the Barcelona City Centre for shopping and good food.
During the trip, we got a chance to bond with each other and with our teachers which was
really great! We feel like this trip brought us all together and we all became friends with
each other. It was an experience that was enjoyable and at the same time taught us about
a culture that is different to our own and yet very interesting. If you have never visited
Barcelona, you definitely should!!

28th of October Annual Parade
On Sunday the 28th of October the Year 6
pupils of Pascal English School Lefkosia represented their school at the annual parade
organized by the Ministry of Education.
All pupils were very punctual and came to
our meeting point on time. Their appearance
was excellent giving a great impression to
pupils from other schools and the general
public.
Our pupils completed the route from Elenion
primary school to the Ministry of Finance with
great enthusiasm and discipline and they
showed excellent ethos when they passed
from the Greek embassy and greeted the V.I.Ps.
Many congratulations to our pupils and their P.E. teacher, Ms Alexia Skourides who accompanied them, for
their exceptional performance, ethos and enthusiasm and we are expecting the same and better performance for the upcoming parade of the 25th of March.

On the 7th of December 2012, the Physical Education Department of our school once again
organised the annual Sports Day which has become one of the biggest in-school events. This
year, due to bad weather conditions, the track and field events were unable to take place
and were replaced by an exciting indoor futsal competition that took place at Lefkotheo.
The teams were formed beforehand and the pupils were split into three categories. Category
A was for Year 1 pupils, category B for pupils in Years 2 and 3 and category C for pupils in
Years 4, 5 and 6. In all categories the pupils competing represented their House and were
awarded House Points. The competition took place as follows:

There were some very exciting games on the day where pupils showed their excitement, their
admirable skills in football as well as their team spirit. In the end the best and, in some cases
luckiest, teams won and received medals as well as a trophy that stands in their House trophy
case. The winners were: Apollo in category A, the team of PASCAL Greek School (Ε.Σ.Π)
in category B and finally, Poseidon in category C.
Judging from the zeal and enthusiasm the pupils showed during the competition it is safe to
say that this was another successful sporting event organized by the Physical Education
Department of our school. We aim to organize the same and better events for our pupils every
year hoping to attract more pupils into exercising not only through the lesson of Physical
Education but through competing in the various sporting competitions in order to promote
lifelong exercise and to encourage them to lead balanced and healthy lives.
