One squad earned Florida Bar Chester Bedell Memorial state championship for second year in a row, and three units won regional competitions and advanced to national tournaments. Of 400 law school teams competing at national level, only UF had units in two Final Fours — prestigious American Bar Association and American Trial Lawyers competitions. The importance of alumni involvement in the success of the College of Law is demonstrated by a review of some notable 2001-02 achievements — each one funded by, supported or participated in by one or more UFLaw grads. Law school officials and UF administrators announce new Center on Children and the Law, to be directed by nationally recognized Professor Barbara Bennett Woodhouse (who comes to the College of Law from the University of Pennsylvania where she was co-founder and co-director of the Center for Children’s Policy Practice and Research). Gator TeamChild and the Juvenile Mediation Clinic are among 26 organizations honored by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency for their work with youth. Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Wells ’64 and other current and retired Cour t Justices judge 16th annual Zimmerman Shuffield Kiser & Sutcliffe Moot Court Cup competition. Alumni from all over the country and Carribean attend Black Law Student Association’s 30th Anniversary celebrations and 12th Annual BLSA Alumni Reunion Weekend. During 2001-2002 and preceding six months, law faculty hire eight educators of tremendous talent and expertise to put law school in position to enhance signature programs, add strength to core curriculum, create new initiatives: • David Levin Chair in Family Law Professor Barbara Bennett Woodhouse. • Levin Mabie Levin Professor Berta Esperanza Hernandez-Truyol • Marshall Criser Chair in Electronic Communications & Administration William Page. • Assistant Professors Sherrie Russell-Brown,Valerie Sanchez, Mark Fenster,Wayne Hanewicz and Mark Thurmon Faculty, alumni, staff and students work together throughout 2000-2001 to address law school diversity issues and the recruiting and retaining of minority faculty and students. Masters in the art of human conflict resolution shared secrets to success with more than 100 lawyers, students and others attending the 2nd Annual Upchurch Watson & White Dispute Resolution Symposium presented by the law school’s Institute for Dispute Resolution. Hispanic Business Magazine lists Levin College of Law as one of the nation’s “Top 10 Law Schools for Hispanic Students” in its September 2000 issue. Chief Justice and Justices from the Florida Supreme Court, Dean Jon Mills and law school faculty, staff and students participate in special ceremony in honor of those killed and wounded 9/11. In worldwide competition in Vienna, the law school’s International Commercial Arbitration Moot Court Team topped last year’s 50th percentile ranking by moving up to 37th (41st of 108 teams),and ranked 13 of 26 U.S. teams. Support from Steel Hector & Davis, LLP, in Miami makes it possible for the team to compete. The eighth annual Public Interest Environmental Conference, “Industry is from Mars, Environmentalists are from Venus: Reconciling our Differences on Earth” held in spring and organized by Environmental and Land Use Law Society student organization. A record 2,550 students – the largest and one of the most qualified candidate pools in school history – in winter 2002 applied for Fall 2002 admission, a 40% increase over Fall 2001. Internationally recognized human rights advocate and author Randall Robinson and former Jamaican cabinet minister Dudley Thompson were featured at the Third Annual Conference on Race and Race Relations organized by Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations. The Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court Team advanced to quarterfinals in the Bankruptcy Law Competition, St. John’s University; won second in the Ruby Vale National Corporate Law Competition, Delaware; hosted the annual Raymer F. Maguire Final Four Competition; and won second place for Best Memorandum in the JESSUP Southeast regional competition. Thanks to widespread support from alumni throughout Florida and the nation as well as from law firms, faculty, friends and law students the Levin College of Law exceeds its goal to raise $5 million by the end of 2001 toward a $25 million construction project to begin in 2003. Plans call for construction on a major addition to the Legal Information Center — subsequently to be named the Lawton Chiles (’55) Legal Information Center in honor of the late Florida governor and U.S. senator — and new stateof-the-art classrooms. Officials and academicians from Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Argentina, Mexico and Cuba among participants at the Third Annual Legal & Policy Issues in the Americas Conference organized by Center for Governmental Responsibility. According to USNews & World Report, the College of Law moved into the country’s top 20 public law schools - and was ranked in top 50 public and private. The publication’s report on “America’s Best Graduate Schools,” again ranks Graduate Tax Program second in country. We are beginning to see the results of having Dean Jon Mills and UF President Charles Young so committed to making the quality of our facilities equal to the quality of our students, faculty and alumni. Their stated goal of moving UFLaw into the ranks of the Top 10 public law schools is truly achievable if we all join in that commitment. In 2003, thanks to our Building Committee chaired by W.C. Gentry and the hundreds of you that contributed, we will begin construction on an expanded Library and new state-of-the-art classrooms. While we have accomplished much, our challenge now will be to equip these new and upgraded facilities with futuristic technology needed for the highest quality research and communications. The Law Center Board of Trustees will be working tirelessly to accomplish these goals, and we need to know we can count on your continued support and contributions. Opportunities still exist for your help in making the Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center, the renovated Holland Hall and the O’Connell Supreme Court Reading Room competitive with comparable law school facilities across the country. Although we are disappointed Dean Mills will be stepping down in 2003, I can assure you thorough and detailed work has gone into finding his successor. I had the privilege of serving on the law school’s Dean Search Committee, co-chaired by Professors Christopher Slobogin and Barbara Woodhouse. My experience working with them, other educators on the committee, and the faculty as a whole has been most rewarding. President Young and Provost David Colburn also have been very involved in this process. I am honored to have represented you on such a great committee, and value the working relationship our Board has with the staff, faculty and administration. Exciting and dynamic changes are ahead for us in 2003-04 and beyond, and with your loyal Gator Law support, we can all look forward to seeing them unfold. Thank you!! In light of our state and national economic conditions – and in light of UF’s quest to provide quality plus affordability in legal education – I think we all are increasingly aware of the need for the private sector to do its part for “publicly assisted” education. Our contributions to the Annual Fund supplement State funding and make possible varied opportunities for students. As you can see throughout this Report, contributions from alumni, friends and law firms make the difference in the academic quality and educational environment at our law school. All gifts are important; any amount is appreciated and Council President Johnson (left) honors Immediate Past President beneficial. Bruce Harris ’93, Orlando. I’m happy to report that alumni participation rate increased from 10 percent to 12 percent in 2001-02, and we hope to add several more percentage points by the end of ’02-03. Taking the lead in that area are recent graduating classes that revived the “Graduating Class Gift” tradition (see page 4). The Law Review students also are taking a leadership role by pledging their support to endow the Review (see page 11). Your Alumni Council is working to broaden our base of support through appeals to classmates, and by encouraging firms with two or more Gators to achieve 100 percent participation through the Law Firm Giving Program. We also need more individuals and firms to sponsor Book Awards. Please participate when asked. If you are celebrating your 5th, 10th or 25th reunion this April, please come back to campus and support your Reunion Class Gift. Thanks for your involvement! Kenneth R. Johnson ’81 2002-03 Alumni Council President Naples 2 A N N U A L R E P O RT What is It? Why Do We Need It? UFLaw IN COMPETITION with Top 10 Annual Fund Participation, Contributions A Levin College of Law education – to be meaningful to students – is as much about varied, effective co-curricular, extracurricular programs and organizations as it is about superb faculty and required courses. And when it comes to enrichment beyond the classroom, the Annual Fund is the lifeblood of those co-curricular and extracurricular activities needed to help UFLaw and its students compete with their peers at law schools throughout the country. When it comes to Annual Fund success, the College of Law is not keeping pace with Top 10 competitors – or even with some law schools in Florida and the Southeast. While large portions of the school’s annual budget come from State allocation, tuition and interest from its Endowment (capped annually at about 4.5-5 percent of accumulated interest), many programs and activities benefitting students the most aren’t covered by these monies. For example: Law College Council Allocates Annual Fund monies to deserving law student organizations to help defray symposia and conference costs including speakers’ fees, printing and other event costs. John Marshall Bar Association The outstanding and historic law student government is funded in part by Annual Fund monies, as are the many groups overseen by Law College Council. Essentials Provided Additional vital UFLaw elements covered through Annual Fund contributions are: 1. Scholarship and loan assistance 2. Innovative Book Awards 3. Stipends for student research assistants 4. Strengthening of law library 5. Support services and programs for students, alumni 6. Funding for conferences, lectures Moot Court and Trial Teams Annual Fund contributions help pay for training, travel expenses and materials for UFLaw’s excellent teams to participate in prestigious state, regional and national competitions each semester against squads from Florida, Southeast and Top Tier law schools. Pro Bono Work Annual Fund contributions help match funds provided by various entities to provide stipends to students working in public interest organizations or doing pro bono work. 7. Influencing national rankings and recruitment of students and faculty Each year UFLaw needs to raise more than $500,000 in new donor Annual Fund contributions. Currently about 10-12 percent of UFLaw’s 15,000 living alums are contributing. Experience is an invaluable form of instruction, and a truly great legal education requires public financial support to ensure a range of activities to promote intellectual, professional and social growth. I.Annual Fund Fund needs to raise at least $500,000 yearly. II.Total Donors Annual Fund monies support UFLaw’s Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court Team, one of the foremost such teams in the nation. The team competes annually at more than 20 tournaments throughout the country, thanks also to endowments from Raymer F. Maguire / Holland & Knight, LLP, and Shuffield Kiser & Sutcliffe. III. Expenditures Includes unrestricted Annual Funds, restricted Endowment Funds Belt tightening helps, but costs of quality Student Support, Academic Programs high. Data compiled from UF Law Center Association Annual Reports, 1998-02. ‘Law Firm Giving’ Encouraging Gator Grads A n Alumni Council initiative re-established in 2002 for the Annual Fund drive each year seems to have caught the competitive spirit of Gator law grads. Law firm partners and associates, government lawyers, and corporate practitioners who all have one thing in common — being UF law alums — are working to achieve 100 percent participation among Gators in their offices as part of the Firms in Tampa, 2002-03 Annual Fund campaign. Through the revived Law Firm Giving Program, offices with two Miami, Naples, or more Gators that achieve 100 percent participation will receive recognition on a display in the Career Services lobby of the law school and in West Palm, Jax, publications. Already, 20 firms have achieved or are working toward the Tallahassee 100 percent goal. The program is designed to broaden the base of alumni support and to educate alumni about the role of private funds for publicly already at 100% assisted law schools. They are essential for students, faculty and programs and boost the college’s national ranking in the area of alumni participation. To participate, contact Denise Stobbie in Alumni Affairs / 352.392.9296 or stobbie@law.ufl.edu YOU Can Select The Annual Fund’s flexibility allows donors to choose how much to contribute and how their gifts will be used to enrich student life or to leave allocation of funds to discretion of the Dean (based on where funds can best be used for students that fiscal year). Gifts may be any amount, usually between $25 – $2,500, and can be given at any time during a fiscal year (July-June) or in response to mail or phone appeals. Graduating Students Revive Class Gift ay back in ’88, the graduating UFLaw class wanted to leave something behind to honor the College and its students, so it raised more than $5,000. And previous classes also had raised funds toward landscaping and construction and to provide benches for the outdoor study terraces. Through the 90s, however, the “Class Gift” tradition was dormant. But in Fall 2001 at the December graduation a group of ’01 graduates took it on themselves to revive the tradition and presented $4,050 to Dean Jon Mills toward the building campaign. Organizing students were Johanne “We’re indebted Foster, Jamie Rodriguez, Tenesia Connelly, Michael Grider, Josh Heller, to Fall ’01 grads Miguel Suau, Jose Garcia and Eugene who felt strongly Gregory. Leading the collection effort were Samantha Schosberg, Dawn Henrichon, Mack Bernard, Ana Garcia, Natalie Jackson, Allyson Enfinger, Theo Kypreos and George Moraitis Jr. All 16 representatives already are Alumni Council members. “The ‘Class Gift’ is a wonderful gesture of professionalism,” noted Dean Mills on accepting the ’02 grads’ contributions. “An important part of being a member of any profession is giving back to support and improve the institution that prepared you and others who will follow. We are indebted to the Fall ’01 grads who felt strongly this tradition should be resumed.” The combined graduating classes’ total participation was more than 30 percent. Thanks to “an outpouring of grassroots support from more than 500 alumni, faculty, staff, friends and students,” W.C. These aid in recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty such as these UF educators (and those pp. 12-13): Nancy E. Dowd is the Chesterfield Smith Professor of Law and an Associate Director of the Center on Children & the Law. She recently completed her third book, Feminist Legal Theory: An Anti-Essentialist Reader, co-edited with UF Professor Michelle S. Jacobs. Dowd earned her B.A. with honors at University of Connecticut, M.A. at Illinois, and J.D. cum laude at Loyola University of Chicago. Her expertise is family law and constitutional law. Berta Esperanza Hernandez Truyol – Levin Mabie & Levin Professor of Law – taught at the universities of St. John’s and New Mexico, was a litigator for two New York firms, worked at the U.S. departments of Justice and Labor, and is widely published on issues of gender/race, international human rights and employment discrimination. She did undergraduate work at Cornell, earned her J.D. cum laude from Albany Law School of Union University, and received her LL.M. from New York University. He earned his undergraduate degrees at Illinois and Oxford, and his LL.B. at Yale. 10 A N N U A L R E P O RT Recent success of the UFLaw Trial Team in state, regional and national competitions is due in part to scholarship endowments and team support by alumni making it possible for students to devote critical time and effort. Among those helping through endowments: former Law Center Trustees Chairman Ronnie H. Walker ‘68 (who passed away in 2002), funding scholarships presented annually to eight trial team finalists; and Coker Myers Schickel Sorenson & Green P.A. of Jacksonville, also funding scholarships for up to eight members and sponsoring Spring Final Four. A scholarship funded by S. Ensuring UFLaw’s Future ndowments — unrestricted (providing for the greatest needs of the College of Law) or restricted for a particular use — provide perpetual income for the law school through investment of principal funds. Established with a minimum of $20,000, endowments can be through outright gifts, pledges paid over a period of years, deferred gifts (such as trusts or insurance expectancies) and through estate plans. Two important types of endowments established by alumni, friends and law firms to support the law school’s quality education now and into the future: E Juan Diaz (left) of Orange Park, Florida Law Review Editor-in-Chief, and Lisa Wolgast of Palm Beach Gardens, FLR Senior Galleys Editor, visit with Alumni Research Scholar and Professor Dennis Calfee (Review Faculty Advisor) about progress on the student-initiated effort to endow the 55-year-old publication to help ensure its future. Review Endowment Unique hanks to initiative of current and former students connected with UFLaw’s 55-year-old Florida Law Review, an effort to endow the publication is off to a strong start with nearly $300,000 in gifts and pledges. Goal of organizers is to raise $1 million to permanently fund through annual interest the monies necessary for publication, student scholarships, symposia and FLR related events. “We’ve received tremendous support from alumni who want to replicate the positive experiences they had as Law Review members,” said Professor Dennis Calfee, Review faculty advisor. “We are indebted to each donor, many of whom have faithfully supported the publication every year through Annual Fund. Certainly, though, there are a number of our 2,000 FLR alums we would like to hear from.” Even more impressive to Calfee, however, is the pivotal role being played by current members. “At least 10 students have pledged $1,000 over five years – they’re giving back before they’ve even graduated,” he said. “It’s further evidence our students are leading the way in changing the culture of giving to the law school.” “This effort is very important to the quality and stature of our law school,” said Dean Jon Mills, one of more than 2,000 Law Review alumni. “We greatly appreciate the initiative and support of our students and alumni.” T Editor-in-Chief Juan M. Diaz, 3L from Orange Park, agrees. “It’s great to see so many Law Review alumni joining with current members to help us prepare for the future.” The professional rewards of FLR membership are what lead many to give back. “The experience provided career opportunities and opened doors,” said Mark Nouss ’85, who with his wife Debra is a major contributor to the endowment. “I am pleased our gift will enable students to benefit in a similar manner.” Donors of $1,000 and up are honored on a “Florida Law Review Endowment” recognition wall in the journal’s offices. Calfee said successful completion of the endowment drive will make FLR one of the most unique in the country. DUNWODY DISTINGUISHED LECTURE Each Spring, Law Review officials bring to campus one of America’s preeminent legal scholars for its Dunwody Distinguished Lecture in Law series. (The 2003 speaker is Professor Lawrence Gostin of Georgetown University, discussing “When Terrorism Threatens Health: How Far are Limitations on Personal and Economic Liberties Justified?”) The series was established in honor of brothers Elliot and Atwood Dunwody by the law firms of Dunwody White and Landon, P.A.; Mershon Sawyer Johnston; Dunwody & Cole; and the U.S. Sugar Corporation. Endowed Chairs/Professorships These aid in recruitment / retention of outstanding faculty by generating income for salary supplements and teaching / research support. Also an important benefit in helping UFLaw remain competitive for leading students: • Full Scholarships: $100,000 contribution + $50,000 State match • Tuition Scholarships: $50,000 (two combined for $50,000 State match) • Partial Scholarships: minimum $20,000 contribution to endow For information on supporting the law school through a wide variety of tax-deductible charitable giving methods, or to request a copy of Guide to Private Endowments at the University of Florida, please contact: Donald Hale, Senior Director Office of Development & Alumni Affairs Levin College of Law 352.392.9296 / haled@law.ufl.edu A N N U A L R E P O RT 11 ENDOWMENTS Putting an Rush Endowment in Place Perea Irving Cypen Professor of Law Sharon Rush (B.A., J.D., Cornell) specializes in Constitutional Law, Federal Courts, Race Relations and Civil Procedure. He was active in the building campaign that resulted in Bruton-Geer Hall, and gave generously to the law school. He was a founding member of the State University System Board of Regents, serving 14 years (four as chairman), and was instrumental in directing the building of six new state universities. Ferguson, whose son Howell Lykes Ferguson is a UFLaw ’69 grad, also was instrumental in gaining support for the Stephen C. Atlanta, GA “ Alumni support of the College of Law has become even more important, because funding from the State is insufficient for a top-tier law school.Without UFLaw, none of us would have achieved what we have achieved. Contributing is a way of giving back to the school, as did the alumni who came before us, and to the next generation of students. It is a way of saying ‘Thank you.’ The school has a great environment for learning and fostering creativity, but setting out to become one of the Top 10 public law schools is not enough. We should seek to be one of the Top 10, public AND private. It is critical for alumni and current students to focus on it. ” A N N U A L R E P O RT 23 ANNUAL FUND C O N T R I B U T O R S D I D YO U K N O W ? In 2002, in its fourth year of competition, the UF squad – with Sam T. Dell Research Scholar/Professor Thomas Hurst as faculty advisor and Assistant Professor Wayne Hanewicz assisting – moved up to 41st of 108 teams from 36 countries (ranking 13th of 26 U.S. teams). Eduardo Palmer ’85, chair of SHD’s international litigation and arbitration group, notes the firm’s sponsorship allows UF students “an invaluable opportunity to gain experience in a tremendously important field of law.” Palmer is one of multiple Gators at Steel Hector Davis, a 78-year-old firm with offices in Europe, South America and five Florida cities. Affectionately referred to by students through the years as the “habitrail,” the structure was made possible by a $50,000 gift from Parrish to the Bruton-Geer building campaign in 1981, and connects that facility to Holland Hall. “This is a monument to a very fine faculty and student body that has served Florida well for many, many years,” he said. Parrish was a Titusville businessman and ’35 law school graduate who had cattle, citrus and banking interests. He was named an assistant (clerk) to the Florida Supreme Court upon graduation, and later as an attorney for the City of Orlando earned national recognition by getting portions of President Franklin Roosevelt’s Agricultural Adjustment Act declared unconstitutional. Parrish was twice president of the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Florida Council of 100 official, and director of the Florida East Coast Railroad and several financial institutions. He contributed to the law school on a regular basis, noting “the College of Law has been a major influence on my life.” A Steven H. Hagen Guy S. Haggard Gregory S. Hagopian Mr. & Mrs. Donald J. And the best sources of these private funds are the alumni. My UF law degree means a lot to me. It has allowed me to work with a great firm with great clients. It is absolutely important the College continues its emphasis on becoming one of the Top 10 public law schools in the nation. The value of our degrees depends in large measure on the perception of the quality of our College. In addition, the continued success of our firms depends on our ability to hire talented graduates. ” A N N U A L R E P O RT 33 ENDOWMENTS LONGTERM CONTRIBUTORS D I D YO U K N O W ? 2 0 0 1 - 2 0 0 2 D O N O R S TO E N D OW M E N T S During this fiscal year, these individuals contributed to permanent endowments to honor those named, and to help increase value of and use of the endowments. When I enrolled, UF was really THE only choice if you wanted to practice in Florida. It was where you made the contacts you would use in your practice. And we must work to make certain that remains true. As for shooting for the Top 10 of public law schools in the U.S., from a selfish standpoint, the better the academic reputation of the College, the more value my diploma has. I believe the law school can do it with a few leaps. There’s no reason why any Southeastern Conference law school or any other law school in the South should rank ahead of UF in any poll or by any measurement. ” A N N U A L R E P O RT 35 CONTRIBUTIONS ANALYSIS J.D. My UF education prepared me to practice law with and against any lawyer from any school in the country. Recently our newset graduates took action to support that heritage and begin a commitment to the future of their college. As you have read elsewhere in this Report, we average about 10-12 percent alumni contribution rate – or around 1,920 of 16,000 graduates – year in and year out. We can do better, and our new graduates are out to make that happen. The graduating classes of Fall 2001 and Spring 2002 contributed and pledged over $18,000 to give back to many of the programs and organizations that helped them on their way to the success we know they will attain. These voluntary gifts came before any of them received their first paycheck and at a time they have an average post-graduation debt of more than $42,000. What an impressive sacrifice this is. With over 33 percent of the two graduating classes contributing the trend is set. Such vital student activities as Florida Law Review, Moot Court, Trial Team and multiple organizations will benefit greatly. Pride in the past and hope for the future is the message these new alumni are sending. Just as these classes have set new precedents, our faculty and staff have worked hard to prepare our students for their future careers. I would especially like to thank Appointments Committee Chair David Richardson for his hard work in continuing to recruit and hire one of the strongest faculties in the country. The fact we are able to recruit the best says a lot for everyone at the school. This fiscal year 2001-02 has been one of the best ever in terms of faculty recruiting and hiring. Environmental Law, Childrens and Family Law and Dispute Resolution are establishing nationally renowned programs. We also will replace our exceptional Director of Libraries Grace “Betty” Taylor with an internationally recognized new Director of Libraries Kathleen Price – who counts Betty as her mentor. The combination of unique and innovative programs; diverse, creative and extraordinary faculty; and a diverse, high quality student body demonstrate why our rise into the Top 10 is inevitable. The college’s Strategic Plan lays out a plan to meet that objective. We plan on an improved student teacher ratio, skills training, enhanced faculty scholarship and teaching, and dynamic changes in our institutional focus. All of these initiatives are underway. I have said before that our greatest weakness is our facilities. The last major upgrades and renovations were about 20 years ago. The astonishing ‘fundraising‘ success of 2001 will allow us to proceed with groundbreaking in 2003 for a $23 million state of the art library and classrooms. These facilities will match the excellence of our faculty, staff, students and alumni. Each new semester brings a greater demand to attend our college. The LSAT scores and grades of the entering classes are the highest ever. Although the job market and economy may be tough, the graduates of the College of Law are doing well. Thanks to the hard work of our Career Services office for helping our Class of 200102 achieve a 97 percent placement rate nine months after graduation. We are no longer only a Florida college but a national institution. The students are being hired by the best firms in the country and are locating in Atlanta, New York, Washington and beyond. We have all the elements that lead us towards a Top 10 college. Our new graduates have recognized the value of their education and the importance of investing in our future. All of us as alumni need to consider following their example. If our 16,000 graduates match the level of giving of our new graduates our giving rate will triple. That’s a nice challenge.
