RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
AT THE BAR
with Theo & Digger
Once again for the 2016 season, local footy fans Theo and Digger
return to give their views and opinions on BFL footy each week,
from the comfort of the Sports Bar at the Ballarat Leagues Club!
Theo: Here we are again Dig, on the cusp of a much-needed long
weekend!
Digger: For you maybe, not for the BFNL footballers and
netballers!
T: I’ve always wondered about that – seems that all of the other
leagues in the region are off this weekend, but not the BFNL.
D: It’s a bit of a sore point mate, speaking to a lot of the players
they’d love to have this weekend off to head away for the long
weekend…but then again, they only had a week off a fortnight
ago, plus it’s a chance to play in front of some big crowds on a
busy weekend in Ballarat!
T: Glass is always half full with you Dig, that’s what I like about
you!
D: No point looking backwards mate, always have to move
forward.
T: Speaking of looking backwards, what caught your eye from the
last weekend?
D: I think it was the big margins at Clarke Oval and Eureka
Stadium that really made me stand up and take notice. I
was expecting both Sunbury and North City to win, don’t get
me wrong, just not by those margins. For the Lions to keep
Sebastopol to just one scoring shot over three quarters of footy
is almost unheard of – especially given that these Burras are a
damn sight better than they were 12 months ago – and likewise
for North City keeping Melton to just four scoring shots after
quarter-time, three of which came in the second quarter.
T: You bang on about Melton quite a bit and their need for
respect – this surely wouldn’t have helped.
D: They’re a bit like the Grade 4 schoolyard bully, are Melton –
they talk a good game, they beat up on the little kids, but when
they come face-to-face with the Grade 6 kids, they soon get
brought back to earth.
T: Interesting analogy mate, don’t quite think I’ve heard that
one before! Let’s look at this weekend, shall we, and another
top-of-the-ladder clash for your Lakers against the blue Lions
from the East.
D: Should be a ripper down at Lakerland mate. Hopefully the
weather gives us a bit of a respite so we can see these two teams
at their best, because this should be a ripper. The Lakers haven’t
missed a beat over the last couple of weeks, but Sunbury are
setting themselves for a big three-week period now where they
face top-six contenders, and they know how important a win is
here not just for their confidence, but also to make sure other
4 | BFNL RECORD 2016
teams take them seriously as premiership contenders. I’m going
with the heart and tipping the Lakers, but I’m very, very worried
about this one.
T: East Point return to action after a bye last week to face
Sebastopol at the Eastern Oval.
D: Two Jekyll-and-Hyde teams this year for mine – will the good
one or the bad one show up? Surely Sebas can’t be that bad two
weeks in a row…but East Point are a pretty good side too just for
what it’s worth, and I think they can get the chocolates this week.
T: Darley are also back in action after a week off this week, as
they face the Swans in a game they’ll start as favourites in.
D: Yep, and they should get the job done too – the Swans were
pretty good against Redan last week, but they’ll probably lose a
couple back to the VFL this week, and the Devils are starting to
find their mojo now…Darley to win and start banging loudly on
the door of the top six.
T: Your Grade 4 schoolyard bullies take on Redan at Macpherson
Park?
D: And here’s the chance to test whether this analogy really
fits. Redan folk will be the first to admit that they haven’t been
playing great footy of recent times, but if they’re up and firing,
then they’re the Grade 6 kid coming into the middle school yard.
I’d love to see Melton prove me wrong, but I don’t think they will
here…and go tumbling out of the top six as a result at a bad time
to get out of the upper rungs.
T: Another Sunday game this week as well, as North Ballarat
City take on Bacchus Marsh at Eureka Stadium.
D: This should be another ripper as well, and given that I don’t
have to work the next day, I think I might enjoy the two-course
special here at the BLC bistro for lunch, then head down to
the Northern Oval to check this one out. I don’t think Bacchus
Marsh will be too down on themselves after losing to a good
Lakers side last week, but this is another test for them against
a North City team who love playing at Eureka Stadium and who
are coming off a pretty dominant week last week. They should
be able to handle the step up in class on a good track, and I’m
tipping them to get home by a short half head.
T: Good work mate, same time next week?
D: If you can get me away from this open fire – good choice
moving this week’s chat into the Bistro!!

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
NETBALLERS LOOK TO MAKE IT FOURTH TIME LUCKY
The Ballarat Football Netball League’s Open netball
representative side will look to make history this Sunday as
they travel to Melbourne to try and bring home a state title.
By virtue of their victory in the Central Highlands Regional
VNL competition played earlier in the season, their fourth
win in as many years of the competition, the team will travel
to Hisense Arena to contest the Regional VNL Champions
Challenge for the fourth consecutive year as they take on the
Eastern Regional VNL region in an effort to bring home their
first Champions Challenge title after falling at the final hurdle
in each of the last three years.
The side that travels to Melbourne on Sunday will look slightly
different to the one that defeated the Wendouree Netball
Association by a goal back in March to win the Central
Highlands Regional VNL competition, with Stacey and Gina
McCartin, Molly Boyle and Melanie Allen all unavailable for
this game, meaning that coach Kate McMahon has needed to
find replacements for these talented players.
“We’re going to put on show the strength that the BFNL has
in our netball arm, and we’ve been able to collect some really
key players”, McMahon told the BFNL Netball Show earlier
this week.
“Liv Jones [from North Ballarat City] will be great to swing
into that centre position along with Kara Hart, and will work
really well with [North City teammate] Jordyn Bibby in the
shooting end”.
“Sascha Veldhuis from East Point will match up nicely with
Lauren Atkinson through the midcourt, and finally we’ve got
Beck Anstey coming in from Sunbury who brings in a huge
amount of experience in our defensive end”.
“At this stage, we have limited knowledge of our opposition,
so I’ll be preparing Options A,B,C and D [for the day]”,
McMahon said.
“We’ve got some strength across the court in the form of our
versatility, and I won’t be afraid to use that”.
“Most of the girls will have already played a game the day
before, and last year in particular we had a number of sore
legs [on the court]”.
“With the selection of the team, we’ll be able to rotate the
girls to manage this without losing any of our depth and pace
and get better in keeping those legs fresh”.
As well as these three players, the team also features two
players that joined the Regional VNL team for the first
time this year in Bibby, the reigning league MVP as well as
Atkinson, the 2015 Sally McLean Trophy winner after both
played VNL netball with the ACU Sovereigns last year, and
McMahon thinks that they could be the key to finally taking
home the title that has eluded them for the past three years.
The game starts at 10:35am at Hisense Arena in Melbourne,
with tickets available at the door, which will also provide entry
to the ANZ Championship game between the Melbourne
Vixens and the Northern Mystix following the Champions
Challenge.
“I think with any netball team it’s nice to have that focal
point in the goal ring, and we have that this year [in Bibby]”,
McMahon commented.
Coach: Kate McMahon
Georgia Cann (Sebastopol, assistant coach)
Kara Hart (Lake Wendouree)
Emma Henry (Redan)
Ruby Parry (Redan)
Lauren Atkinson (East Point)
Sascha Veldhuis (East Point)
Rebecca Anstey (Sunbury)
Jordyn Bibby (North Ballarat City)
Emma Church (North Ballarat City)
Olivia Jones (North Ballarat City)
“She’s in great form, she can do some great stuff aerially and
in the ring and we need to work out how to get the ball to her
and in the goal ring”.
“[Atkinson] gives us some real speed on the court and some
experience, she’s a fantastic netballer and was absolutely
crucial in getting us to this day”.
Whilst McMahon admits that she doesn’t know much about
her opposition, which will be made up primarily of players
from the Gippsland League but also from throughout the
6 | BFNL RECORD 2016
Eastern Regional VNL area, she has learned from the last
three years of playing in this game, and whilst her focus may
be on the opposition very early in the piece, she also knows
what needs to happen to be successful in this game.
The BFNL team is as follows…

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
ROUND 8 FOOTBALL PREVIEW
by Shaun Kelly
The Queen’s Birthday weekend always stands as the unofficial
midpoint of the Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball
League season, and whilst we’re a week away from the actual
midpoint, these next few weeks are going to be crucial for
almost every team in the league as they try and keep their hold
on, or try to move in to, a top six ladder position in a year that
seems much more even than other’s before it. Let’s look at the
only senior football matches in the AFL Goldfields region this
weekend, which should attract some decent-sized crowds as a
result.
DARLEY are back in action this weekend after having last week
off thanks to their scheduled Round 7 fixture being played as
the Season Opener, and they should be fresh and raring to go as
they host a BALLARAT side at Darley Park today that were more
than serviceable up until half-time against Redan last weekend,
trailing by just three points at the main break before the Lions
put their collective feet on the pedal to run away with the game
by 32 points, with Daniel Kennedy, Alex Stepnell and Mitch Rodd
amongst the Swans’ better players. It will be interesting to see
how the week off affected Darley last week, given their potentially
season-altering win over North City the week before and the
momentum they would have gathered from that potentially being
altered. On paper, the Devils look like the stronger side, but
Ballarat are playing well together as a unit at the moment, and
Jarrod Edwards will be telling his players not to take the Swans
lightly in any way.
PREDICTION: That being said, DARLEY should be able to pull
away after half time to continue their charge back towards the
top six.
Match of the Round takes place at Wendouree Reserve this week,
as the undefeated LAKE WENDOUREE, fresh off a 19 point win
over the much-vaunted Bacchus Marsh at Maddingley Park last
Saturday, take on a SUNBURY side that are absolutely flying at
the moment as evidenced by their 130 point win over Sebastopol
last week in which they kept the Burras scoreless for the first half
of the game and goalless for three quarters. They’ll find it a bit
tougher in that regard this week, even with Lakers key forward
Lucas Anderson missing for the rest of the year after a nasty
injury last weekend, which will leave a massive hole in the Lakers
forward line given his class and his ability to run his opponent
all over the ground. Andrew Pitson has been a revelation in a
permanent forward role this year, Nathan Pring is in the middle
of a purple patch of form and watch for Tom Carey and Jack
Elkington to stand up in Anderson’s absence. On the other side of
the coin, Jack Landt has been just as dangerous off half-forward
for Sunbury as Pring has been in recent weeks, David Kovacevic
looms large in the ruck for not just his centre-bounce work but
also his ball-winning ability around the ground, and the midfield
battle will be an absolute ripper with Ben Taylor, Steve Clifton, Ash
Simpson and Nathan Monk on one side of the equation and the
in-form Alik Magin, Nathan Wood, Joe Redfern and Andrew Duhau
on the other.
PREDICTION: Tough one to call – I can easily see the Lions
getting this one, but until LAKE WENDOUREE give me a reason
to tip against them, I’m not going to…yet!
8 | BFNL RECORD 2016
EAST POINT return to action after a bye last week as they
welcome SEBASTOPOL to the Eastern Oval today, with the Burras
coming off arguably their toughest game of the season last week,
going down by 130 points to Sunbury with their only two goals of
the day coming in the final quarter. Sebastopol were scoreless at
half-time, with the ball barely even entering their forward 50, but
they might have some help ready to return this week, with Michael
Powell playing in the Reserves last week and kicking a couple of
goals…if he got through training during the week, he’s likely to
return against an East Point side that he’s had some memorable
battles with over the last couple of years. The Roos will see
this game as a chance to work their way back inside the top six,
especially if Redan are able to topple Melton, ahead of a pretty
big three weeks following where they’ll meet Lake Wendouree,
Sunbury and Darley before their second bye of the season.
PREDICTION: EAST POINT should be too strong, but it might
take them a while to shake a Burras side that will be looking for
redemption after last week.
Pretty big game in the context of the season at Macpherson Park
today as MELTON play host to REDAN, especially for the home
side who were pretty much blown off the park by North Ballarat
City at Eureka Stadium last week, going down by 141 points in
what was their worst performance of the season. They won’t find
it much easier against Redan this week, although the Lions took a
half to shrug off a determined Ballarat last week, turning a three
point half time lead into an eventual 32 point win. A loss to either
side today leaves them vulnerable of slipping out of the top six –
especially the Bloods, who’s percentage copped a pounding last
week – whilst a win gives a game buffer inside the top flight at a
crucial time of the year.
PREDICTION: Expecting the Bloods to throw everything at this
one, but REDAN should be able to hold them off for their fourth
win of the season.
Sunday footy is back on the radar this week, with NORTH
BALLARAT CITY hosting BACCHUS MARSH in what should be a
fascinating game at Eureka Stadium, and one that will tell us a lot
more about both teams this season. They come off differing paths
from last week as well, with North City absolutely annihilating
Melton at this ground last weekend, and the Cobras going down
at home to Lake Wendouree on a day where 26 scoring shots,
four more than their opposition, yielded just seven goals. Travis
Hodgson will be keen to rectify that imbalance this weekend,
especially with Damian Cupido and Alec Del Papa both being
held goalless last weekend, and will be hoping Cam Richardson
returns to face his old side. No such problems in the North City
forward line last weekend, with Derick Micallef, Mitch Johns and
coach Jordyn Burke sharing 14 goals last weekend, and could
prove a handful for Hamish Coulton and the Cobras’ backline this
weekend.
PREDICTION: At home, NORTH BALLARAT CITY should be able
to claim third spot as their own.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
ROUND 8 NETBALL PREVIEW
by Shaun Kelly
A huge weekend for Ballarat FNL netball this weekend, not
just for some crucial Round 8 matches in the BGT A Grade
netball competition, but also with our Open representative
side contesting the Regional VNL Champions Challenge final
at Hisense Arena on Sunday against the Gippsland League.
We’ve previewed the RVNL game in a separate article in
today’s Record, so let’s move on and look at this weekend’s
Round 8 matches.
Pretty important game at Darley Park today as DARLEY host
BALLARAT, the Devils coming off a week off and the Swans
coming off being run over after half-time by Redan to lose by 10
goals and tumble from the top six as a result, despite the best
efforts of defenders Chelsea McMahon and Abbey Wiltshire. A
win is crucial today for either side here as they both sit a game
outside the six (I know the ladder in this Record has Darley two
games out, but their Round 1 bye hasn’t been entered into the
MyNetball system, therefore hasn’t been accounted for and the
Devils are on the same points as the Swans) and could sneak
back in tonight, depending on results. Darley haven’t been able
to buy a win since their great start to the season, and will be
confident today, but Ballarat will start this game as favourites
and need a confidence boost.
PREDICTION: BALLARAT to get themselves back onto the
winners list
EAST POINT, like the Devils, return after a week off last week to
face SEBASTOPOL at the Eastern Oval in a game that becomes
more interesting after the Burras finally took that big scalp
we’ve been waiting for, dominating Sunbury early to build a
ten-goal quarter time lead as the foundation for their eventual
52-34 win. The Cann sisters were dominant in goals, with a
combined shooting percentage of 82%, and Nikki Allen and
Kahlia Dix kept the Sunbury goalers to just a 57% shooting
clip, which went a long way towards them winning the game.
They’ll find it tougher this week though, as the Roos would have
enjoyed last weekend’s bye and will be set to go to continue
their undefeated season today. Kate McLeod standing Adrianna
Cann in the Burra goals will be a match-up worth watching,
as will Dix and Allen taking on Lauren Jew and Emma Farrell
under the East Point goal ring. It’s the midcourt that could
prove the difference though in this game, and where the Sebas
midcourters will need to be on their game should they wish to
repeat last week’s heroics.
PREDICTION: Tougher opposition this week for the Burras…
EAST POINT will be too strong
LAKE WENDOUREE are going about their business quite nicely
at the moment, sitting in third spot behind the undefeated
East Point and North City, and will be looking forward to the
challenge of facing SUNBURY at the Wendouree Reserve today.
The Lakers took out a 55-30 win over Bacchus Marsh last
week, with Kellie Berry shooting 39 goals and their experienced
midcourters in Kara Hart, Katie Williams and Kirsty Walsh
leading the way. Sunbury dropped their second successive
10 | BFNL RECORD 2016
game last weekend, going down 52-34 to Sebastopol despite the
best efforts of Sarah Davies, Prue Stanley and a returning Beck
Anstey. One of the issues Sunbury had last week was in the
goal ring, where the new pairing of Kathryn Williams and Amy
Starzer, the latter backing up after playing with Rupertswood
in the RDFNL just down the road earlier, could only connect
on 57% of their attempts on goal for the day, something they’ll
need to improve on today against a Lakers team that are,
statistically, the stingiest in the league at the moment.
PREDICTION: LAKE WENDOUREE should get it done at home,
cementing third spot in the process.
Interesting game at Macpherson Park today as MELTON host
a REDAN side that have arguably been the in-form side of the
league over the last month, winning their fourth straight game
last weekend as they turned an eight-goal half time deficit
into a ten goal win, defeating Ballarat 38-28 in new coach
Talia Holloway-Roden’s first game in charge. Bringing young
shooter Ashlee Smith on at half-time was a good coaching
move, replacing an out-of-sorts Tasha Dack (who also had to
double-up the next day on ACU Sovereigns duty) and connecting
on 17 of her 22 goal attempts for the day to help kick-start the
Lions attacking end into action, whilst Emma Henry and Jordan
Lever clamped down on the Swans at the other end of the court.
Melton ran into the North City juggernaut last week, and whilst
coach Renee Hulls shot at an 88% rate last week and defenders
Katie Kakoschke and Telia Coverdale were fantastic, it couldn’t
stop them going down 60-35 against the reigning premiers. It’s
a crucial game for Melton, who need to win to stay in touch with
the top flight, but Redan knows that a win doesn’t just cement
their top six spot at the moment, potentially by two games,
but also that it gives them a chance to rise up the ladder,
something not many would have thought of when they started
the season 0-3.
PREDICTION: It may take them a half to shake off the Bloods,
but REDAN to make it five in a row today.
Sunday netball also takes place in the BFNL this week, with
NORTH BALLARAT CITY taking on BACCHUS MARSH at the
adjusted time of 3:30pm this week, adjusted to give North City’s
Emma Church, Liv Jones and Jordyn Bibby time to return from
Melbourne, where they will be a part of the BFNL’s Regional
VNL team at Hisense Arena. If ever there’s going to be a day
for an upset, this could be it, with five of North City’s starting
seven players either already having played a game, or missing
completely in the case of the McCartin sisters, and don’t think
that Bacchus Marsh coach Dean Giarrusso won’t be aware of
this…especially with Ally Symons in such great form in goals at
the moment.
PREDICTION: Despite being tired and undermanned, the
depth of NORTH BALLARAT CITY should ensure that Annie’s
Angels remain undefeated at the end of the weekend.

A MESSAGE FROM WORKSAFE
AFL VICTORIA COUNTRY
STATEWIDE PLAYER POINTS SYSTEM ROLLS OUT
With the recent rollout of the statewide Player
Points System, feedback from Metropolitan
Leagues and Region Commissions suggests the
policy is proving a welcome measure so far.
Aimed at addressing equalisation concerns and
escalating player payments, the Player Points
System is one half of the Community Club
Sustainability Program in 2016, with a Players
Salary Cap set to be introduced in 2017.
AFL Victoria Club Sustainability Manager, Darryl
Collings said the implementation of the program
had been well supported throughout the State.
“The feedback we have received to date has been
largely positive, with Metropolitan Leagues and
Region Commission working closely with their
clubs to implement the framework,” Collings said.
“The enhancements made to the Footyweb system
have assisted in making the system as transparent
as possible, with all player point allocations now
available in the results section of each of the
competitions websites.
“In the next few weeks, the Working Party that
developed the Points system, will be seeking
formal feedback from Metropolitan Leagues
and Region Commission reviewing all aspects
of the Points System with a focus on how it may
be improved for future seasons. It’s important
the clubs and leagues continue to be part of the
solution.”
One Region Commission already seeing the
benefits of the Player Points System this season
is AFL Barwon. Region General Manager, Lee
Hartman, said the response from clubs to the
Points System has been largely positive.
12 | BFNL RECORD 2016
“All the clubs have been really good with getting
on board, and that was needed for this to work,”
Hartman said.
A top priority for AFL Barwon in implementing the
Player Points System was to ensure it remains
feasible for local clubs.
“The main thing for us was to make sure the
system was manageable for clubs,” Hartman said.
The system, which sees each club allocated up
to 50 points to distribute across its playing group,
has so far proven an effective measure in handling
playing lists.
“Initially, we were offering 40 points and some
clubs thought that wasn’t enough,” Hartman said.
“There have only been one or two clubs that have
used that maximum points though, so I think we’ve
got it right.”
With the AFL Working Party giving Metropolitan
Leagues and Region Commissions the flexibility
to apply either a one or two point reduction for
players that have met the season of service clause
in 2015, to participate with the same club in 2016,
Hartman said AFL Barwon is seeing progressive
changes in retention and recruitment.
“We’ve been able to retain players and we’ve seen
some return to original home clubs because
they’re worth only one point.
“We’ve seen clubs that traditionally went on big
recruiting sprees unable to do that, and they have
had to be more strategic around recruitment, so
there are plenty of benefits,” said Hartman.

MARK AND GOAL
OF THE YEAR
The McDonald’s Mark and Goal of the Year awards are back!
If you witness a spectacular mark of goal that happens during the Red Onion
Creative BFNL Senior Football competition, please consider nominating it in the
one of the following ways:
a) Via BFNL.TV at http://www.aflgoldfields.tv/highlight-nominations; or
b) Via email to scott@aflgoldfields.com.au
Please be sure to indicate the rough time of the relevant quarter and roughly where on the ground the
highlight took place so we can pinpoint exactly where to find the footage. An example is as follows:
Sunbury player Liam Brady took a high flying mark on the wing near the coaches box at around the 10min
mark of the 3rd quarter in their match against Ballarat.
All nominations will be shown at the 2016 Henderson Medal where the winners will also be announced.

DARLEY DIARY
Football: Complacency is a state of mind that only exists in
retrospect; It has to be shattered before being ascertained.
With that in mind, it was only matter of time before our
senior guys started getting some reward for effort. Congrats
on a great win against North City with a timely return of
Jake “the Snake” Edwards …. now is time to build some
momentum. Our Reserve and U18 guys are now at 3 and 3
and need to start doing the same. Encourage the challenge
and stay committed to the cause. With a weekend off last
weekend and a nice time for recovery, today we host Ballarat
and welcome them to Darley Park. Being a long weekend,
we understand that you will want to get back up the highway
as quickly as possible, but it would be great to see you for
one drink after the game.
Netball: Our C grade netballer’s had a terrific win against
an undefeated North city outfit. Congrats to Brooke Edwards
for a stand out performance. Drew always said there
were plenty of miles left on ya’ tyres. In addition we need
to acknowledge the fill in game from Mel Freeman, who
is from our U17 group of fantastic young women coming
through the ranks. We are proud of the Unders coming
through and hope they can provide a sustainable netball
dept for years to come. Anyone wishing to step up to help
our netball dept for 2017 and beyond please feel free to
contact Marika Barnes or Lorissa Edwards. Now is as good
32 | BFNL RECORD 2016

a time as any to step up and help out wherever your skills
allow.
Social: Thanks to all who attended our previous social
function held at Melbourne Public a fortnight ago, and a
special thanks to Mel Byron for organising the day. From all
reports it was a great day … apparently there wasn’t enough
quick-eze and Borocca on the shelves at Foodworks Monday
morning. Mid Year Ball tickets are available now online. For
those of you that have not paid for a ticket as part of your
membership, the only way to get one, is to get online and
purchase! Don’t leave it to the last minute or you will miss
out. Tickets are limited. The Ball will be held on the 25th of
June, the cost is $60 which is inclusive of the Bus. So tell
your partners, friends associates, organise your baby sitters,
for this will be another fantastic night. Don’t miss out!!!
Join the Committee for 2017 or play a role. Stay tuned for
the next meeting to be held at Darley Clubrooms to set our
structure for 2017 and beyond. Any and all voluntary help
will be greatly appreciated. Even if you only play a small
part on home games, it is still help. Put your hand up
now to select the role you can assist with in 2017. See any
current committee member.
Who am I?? Who was the only member of the St. Kilda’s
1997 Grand final side to play football in 2010??
This Long Weekend sees the Active Electrical Ballarat
Swans travel down the highway to take on the Darley
FNC. Always a tough task at Darley and this will be no
exception. Although the Ballarat Swans came away from
last week’s games against Redan without the points there
was plenty endeavour and commitment which was a good
sign in going into this week’s matches.
Football: The Seniors pushed Redan all day and it wasn’t
until late in the final quarter that they were able to get on
top and take the points. The Reserves first half was good
with only 10 points separating the two sides at the main
break. However Redan’s second half proved to much for
the Swans and went on to win a tough encounter. The
U/18.5 got off to a flyer in the first quarter, but quoting
an old cliché – It takes four quarters of football to win a
game of footy.
Netball: Three wins out of a possible five was the
outcome from last week’s matches. “B”, “C” and “D”
were the victors on the day. ‘C’ Grade are enjoying good
early form and currently hold top place on the ladder.
“A” Grade worked their way to an early 8 goal lead but
unfortunately could not put pay to Redan who were able
to record a come from behind win. “D” grade recorded
their third win for the season with a good win and the
U/19’s slipped to third after their loss.
Social News: The Club’s next social event is a ‘Family
Day/Night’ Sunday, 19th June 2016 at Active Electrical
Oval, Alfredton.
After the match today we return to Alfredton for the
match day awards, refreshments and a meal from Kate’s
Kitchen.
For more information on future functions or what’s
happening around the Senior and junior club visit the
Ballarat Swans Web Site www.ballaratfc.com
Also another form of keeping up with all the news, live
scores and communication is the Team App. Go to www.
teamapp.com and search for Ballarat Swans.
Good luck to all our Football Netball teams today.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
EAST POINT KANGAS CORNER
Good to back at the home ground after a week off. Today’s
matches against Sebastopol are important to our season
and I am sure all supporters are looking forward to solid
performances in all grades in both sports
Today marks Drew Murphy’s 100th game for the club of
which 27 have been in the senior football grade. Drew
came from our junior section at Russell Square and
arrived at the Eastern Oval at the commencement of the
2010 season. Congratulations Drew and hope you have a
good one today
Winter hit this week and today could be a bit wet
underfoot but the ground looks in fine condition so lets
hope for a high quality encounter
The Club Ball is only 2 weeks away on Saturday the 18th
at the Miners Tavern so get your tickets quickly. There
are still about 40 left to sell so see Stroudy today or you
might miss out.
Also the long awaited club jackets are now in stock. All
sizes. We also have a large range of hoodies, scarf’s
and beanies to ward off the winter chill. Once again see
36 | BFNL RECORD 2016
Stroudy today at the bar to get whatever you need to keep
you dry and warm
This weeks sponsor of the week is Irish Murphy’s long
time club supporter. Great food, live music and friendly
staff guarantee the that Ballarat can offer. Get down
there soon for your night out
Don’t forget today to wander over to the Roo Bar and see
Wayne and Brian for coffee and some BBQ’d food and
later in the day a cold drink or 2. They will be looking
forward to seeing you and I am sure you will enjoy what
they serve
There is a 20 Club draw on the deck at 1/2 time. Its not
too late to join only $20 per week and you stand a chance
of winning up to $1000. All proceeds go to infrastructure
projects at the club. See Stroudy for details
We look forward to hosting the Sebastopol FNC and their
supporters over in our social rooms after the game. The
match day awards will be presented between 5.30 and
6pm
Good luck to all of the teams today and GO ROOS
SEBASTOPOL
FOOTBALL REPORT
SENIOR NETBALL REPORT
After a disappointing trip to Sunbury for our footballers last
Saturday our senior list and unders are looking to continue their
improvement against East Point today and with the return of
some of our injured players confidence will be high.
Once again we would like to extend a huge thank you to the city
of Ballarat for the work being carried out on the rooms and
with the new Celling soon to be completed the BURRA nest will
become even more inviting for our loyal fans and community
groups who use them regularly.
Without the generosity of our sponsors it would be impossible
to do what we all love every weekend and as usual we would like
to acknowledge some of them Watersun homes, Ballarat Valves
and Body Zone Panels.
Tomorrow is our bottom of the barrel draw and an invitation is
extended to all to attend. Please have some patients with the
look of the rooms as we are as mentioned in the midst of a
Celling rebuild.
Tickets are $50 and the cash prize for the day will is $3000 with
half price drinks until draw end. Hope to see a large crowd there
as this is our major fund raiser for the year Good luck today and
see you all tomorrow
Win! Win! Well done to our 19’s and A’s for their victories last week.
UP THE BURRA!
With Toni DeGrandi and Ricki Wickson on target with their
goalshooting, the 19’s had their first win of the season and all
players made a significant contribution. Our A Graders put in
a superb ‘four quarter team effort’ to defeat Sunbury. With the
Cann sisters shooting accurately and all players showing great
endeavour, the team scored a convincing win against quality
opposition. A highlight of the game was the number of intercepts
effected by Nikki Allen in the defensive zone.
Our key defenders in the B Grade team, Tegan Boadle and Lauren
Bowler again played terrific games while Hayley Boxall’s goalshooting in the second half was brilliant. For the C and D Grade
teams Lauren Ogilvie, Bec Dowling, Georgia Willersdorf and Karli
Tuddenham did well and special mention goes to the D Grade team
on their much improved effort. Coaches Bianca and Bugsy are
confident that a win is not too far away.
The videoing of all of our senior netball matches over the past two
weeks has been a great idea and many girls have commented on
the value of seeing themselves playing … getting feedback on the
many good things that they are doing and at the same time, noting
aspects of their game that can be improved.
N.B. Players and supporters – Please keep supporting our
generous sponsors whenever possible.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
LAKE WENDOUREE LAKERS NOTES
Welcome everyone to the Ballarat Isuzu Oval its seems ages since
we played at home. Today we do battle with Sunbury who are both
strong in the footy and the netball so it should be an enthralling day.
If you get a minute have a look beside the complex, the builders have
pegged out the dimensions of our new change rooms behind the
temporary fence. We should be in them come round one next year
with a bit of luck.
Last week we were down at Bacchus Marsh in what was mostly a
good day for the club only losing one game of footy and one netball.
The netballers played on a difficult slippery court but the footballers
had the best of the conditions with the usually firm ground with a bit
of give in it.
The netballers had a great day again and all teams are now hitting
their straps. In the A grade they had a comfortable 55-30 victory
with Kara Hart, Katie Williams and Kirsty Walsh in the best. Special
mention to Kara who was selected in the Champion Challenge RVNL
to represent the league in Melbourne on the 13th of June, a super
effort. B grade in a bit of a shock lowered their colours on the day
32-36. C grade had a great win in the close one 28-26 and remain
second on the ladder. D grade had a crushing win 35-10 and also
remain second on the ladder. The under 19’s had a narrow win
33-30 with Paula Fraser named best on court. Well done girls as
ever you continue to show the way with the club with your consistent
performances.
The football was a much anticipated affair with one playing two in
the seniors. In what was a bit of a dour scrappy game the Lakers
were able to strangle the Cobra forwards. The highlight was Lane
42 | BFNL RECORD 2016
Buckwell holding their much talked about full forward goalless,
also special mention to Lane who has made the Victorian Country
squad what a sensational effort. The low light was Lucas “Chooka”
Anderson hurting his knee. It has been confirmed that Chooka has
ruptured his ACL and will be out for the year. He is one of the main
reasons why the club has made a resurgence on the field not only
with his playing ability but his ability to attract other good quality
people to our club. It’s devastating for Chooka, Larns and his family
and for the Lakers family as well. We now need to rally around
and steel ourselves for the rest of the season and do our best for
Chooka because as sure as eggs he will continue to give his all as he
recovers from his surgery.
The seconds had their best win for the year in a very important game,
they now climb into the 6 and need to consolidate their spot. Best
players were Jake Monk, H Robinson, Sean Willmont, Liam Findlay,
Hugh Herben and Liam Edwards. It was great to see Oz on the road
to recovery play an important part in their win. The under 18’s played
in a game were they failed to take their chances and sloppy ball use
hurt them. The scores didn’t indicate the closeness of the contest.
Best were Harry Monk, Pat Fairhead, Tom Salau, Paul O’Connel, Tim
Liston and Tanna.
Don’t forget the IPod shuffle on tomorrow from noon at the rooms,
see Nick Clifton to buy your song. Also note that the sponsors lunch
is on the 18th of June see Vin or Ally Armstrong or Julie Maher for
more information, Val Perovic will be the special guest. Have a great
day and….Go Lakers.
SUNBURY LIONS SNIPPETS
First off congratulations to the 18s for a really well deserved big win and well
done to Jacob Bygate on a haul of 8.2 for the game, finals are in the sites with
some talented footballers being available, well done to all of the boys who
stayed thick we knew it would come. Great night at our IPod Shuffle night, good
representation from the women’s football, great costumes, lots of laughs and
dancing. Meatloaf and Toni Basil (Hey Mickey) are now dating.
We know Diesel is no pussycat on the field, but Saturday night it was puss
in boots. Village people stole the show, we are looking at booking them on
there own. We had royalty attend (Ashley Magin), didn’t know Valles had such
horrid abs. Our next Presidents Luncheon is on Saturday June 25th with guest
speaker, Australian Test cricketer & SEN personality Rodney Hogg a great
entertainer, critic and someone not to miss, after Charlie Bezzina the bar has
been set high but Hoggy is my pick, see Hedley or Sando for tickets or a table.
It’s back again, our Mid Season ball, Saturday July 23rd Witchmount Estate,
after the Melton game, get dressed up and put on your dancing shoes, get
your table of 10 to Hedley asap. Our next major function is our Trivia Night on
Saturday July 9th, get your teams together, table of 10 prices and details to
follow or ask Krystie Dudley or Hedley.Great to see netballers and footballers
helping out on the BBQ and Canteen, also the Footballers doing a great job
cleaner the portables after the games this help is really appreciated as we all
have to put in for a few more weeks till the rooms are finished.
NETBALL - Firstly we would like to congratulate Beck Anstey and Prue Stanley
for playing their 50 games with Sunbury Lions. Also we would like to welcome
Hayley back to court after the birth of her first child. We had mixed results
on the court this weekend. 19 & Under went down by 11 goals (15 to 26),
however the girls played one of their best games to date with great passages
of play and team work, special thanks to Erin and Cassie McLean for filling
in this week. Best players this week were Maddi, Sarah & Tiarna. D Grade
had a great win (27 to 15) D grade, t his game saw the long awaited return of
Captain Tarsh Cox. Her presence brought a lot more composure to the team
and a lot more control. The girls are finally starting to come along as a team
and as they approach with a full team of 11 next week they are all aware of
the limited court time available.Best on, Tarsh Cox, Taylor Brogan and Taylor
Green. C Grade team showed their true colors (52 to 16) . Strength in the mid
court with Courtney Bryant (C ) and the addition of Hayley Mackie (WA) was a
great way to start the game. Hayley has just returned to the Lions after having
a baby. A fantastic display of attacking prowess from both Danah Burrows (GA)
and Ash Whittard (GS) and a very strong defence led by Casey Martin (GD) and
Amanda Colahan (GK). Everything clicked for the girls from the fist centre pass.
Direct passing and the never say die attitude of the girls lifted them up after
a disappointing loss to Redan the previous week. With direction from coach
Stuart Moon this team is looking to go deep into the BFNL C grade finals in
2016.B grade had a great win (52 to 21) in the absence of the tall goaler and
the extreme lateness of Kila B grade started with their smallest attacking end
in a couple of years. Tami Hardwick had her best game of the year in leading
the defence end with multiple intercepts. Girls continue to go strong with next
week being their GF rematch. Best on Tami Hardwick and Lauren Wishart. A
Grade lost 34 to 52.We have been fortunate with the ladder to date with only two
recorded losses and the majority of the teams we have played on the bottom
half of the ladder, we have a couple of tough games ahead with East Point and
North City in the coming weeks, with only two players from last year’s grand
final still taking the court this season and a very young team list we anticipated
a settled and more improved second half of the season. I hear Steeps has been
playing Cupid with someone who wears cowboy boots (Old Daryl calls him
Dusty) and a pretty little thing who works for Steeps sister who had given the
former mullet wearer a trim, all was going just wonderful with cute txts and the
promise of a meeting when Cupid thought he had better reveal the sting and
that in fact it was his apprentice on the other end, Dusty is resigned to the fact
that is he is still an owner operator.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
MELTON BLOODS BANTER
It was not a great day for the Seniors at Eureka Stadium last week.
Severely hit by injuries, the boys really struggled in the cold. Our
reserves enjoyed a good win and many thank to the boys who
doubled up to play again in the seniors. This was a strong effort in
very tough conditions. Hopefully we have a fit side ready to meet
Redan today at the park. At 16 points each on the ladder the
Bloods are expecting to do well against the Lions.
I will keep reprinting this paragraph until someone takes notice
and puts their hand up. We do need game day volunteers for
duties like time-keeping, interchange stewards and doing club
votes. These are essential tasks which need to be filled for home
games and away games. Please give your team manager a break
and offer to help out. Parents, particularly U18.5 parents, need to
come forward and help out. Home games in particular put extra
duties on committee members especially before games.
An update on reported thefts from vehicles at McPherson Park
from a couple of weeks ago. Thanks to an eagle eyed club
member, police have spoken to an individual regarding the thefts
and recovered some of the missing tools. We have no more
information than that at the moment, so we hope that it was an
isolated incident. We will be keeping a close eye on the car park
and surrounding areas during games. We do remind everyone to
keep valuable items securely locked at all times.
Another reminder, the big 10K draw on 26th of June is fast
approaching. Please get the money and ticket stubs back to Rayza
as soon as possible. This draw is a major fundraiser for the club
46 | BFNL RECORD 2016
and it is essential that players and members get behind it.
A reminder for all members to use our sponsors as often as
possible. Their support helps keep the club going. Sponsor of the
week is Stockdale and Leggo. If you are looking to buy or sell a
property give Brian Payne a call and don’t forget to mention the
‘Bloods’.
The Ballarat Leagues Club Reward cards have been delivered. If
you ordered one and not received it please see Clarky to collect.
While on the subject please do not forget that next Sunday the
19th of June is our Ballarat Leagues Club visit. Players, spectators
and officials are asked to attend the BLC after the game for a
drink and some nibbles. If you are wishing to stay on for a meal
please call the BLC to make a booking. Use your Rewards Card
for our club to get a bonus.
This is probably a good time to remind players and supporters
that the club is expected to visit the host’s social rooms after the
games for a chat and a quiet drink. Even though we have the
BLC visit we are still expected to do the right thing and show the
colours win, lose or draw.
Team App is a great way for the club to communicate with
members. Even if you are not at the game you can uses team app
to keep track of the scores. If you have not already subscribed to
the app go to www.teamapp.com and search for Melton Football
Netball Club. Check the website www.meltonfnc.com.au for all
the latest news from the Club, including the popular “Daisy TV”.
GO BLOODS
REDAN LIONS ROAR
The first half last week against Ballarat was an arm
wrestle with us being only 1 point in front at the half time
break. The boys put together a better second half being
24 points clear at 3 quarter time. Ballarat continued to
chip away in the last quarter & with us racking up the
behinds the game may easily have been up for grabs.
Strong leadership from Dean Mathews & Nathan Horbury
steadied the ship for us to take the 4 points in the end.
The Reserves led all day to post another good win with
Jackson Kinna adding 5 to his goal kicking tally & being
named amongst the best on ground along with the ever
reliable Tom Watson. The U18’s were again slow to start
& were 3 goals down at the first change, but managed to
hold Ballarat scoreless in the 2nd quarter. They were still
5 points down going into the last but piled on 5 goals to
come away with the win.
The Netball court produced a great come from behind
win to our A grade girls. 8 goals down at half time to run
out winners by 10 goals. U19 were our only other winning
team for the day. This week against Melton should
produce some hard fought matches as the girls look to
put some more wins on the board.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
BACCHUS MARSH COBRA’S CHATTER
NORTH BALLARAT CITY
It was a terrific win for the senior football against Melton.
The whole team contributed to a great game that surprised
a few watchers with the end result. We had 9 separate
contributors with goals, both Derick Micallef and Mitch Johns
on 5, our coach ended the day with 4. The team were strong
at both ends of the ground, Melton only scoring one point
in the second half. Jarryd Graham gave a best on ground
performance.
The reserves came the closest they have been all season
with a loss by only ten points. There were some missed
opportunities but the boys played well. Andrew Porter’s goal
in the dying minutes brought the crowd to its feet. Matt Nevett
and Tom McPhan both had great games on the day.
Another great win for the U/18.5’s as the boys showed some
great skills to come away in favour by 63 points. Harry Loader
returned to the side after a shoulder injury and kicked a great
9 goal haul. He was well supported by his whole team. Flynn
Appleby continued his great form on the day.
In the netball the 19 & U’s got the club off to another fantastic
start. This game was very close for most of the game and
hard fought but the tenacity of the ladies saw them pull
away in the last quarter for a 4 point victory 31-28 to take
outright spot on top of the ladder. D Grade are marching
50 | BFNL RECORD 2016
along splendidly this season and with a match against the
highly ranked Melton team , this was going to be a tough
assignment, but this team never ceases to amaze us with a
comfortable 46-16 victory. C Grade came up against a very
determined team who were relentless at attacking the ball,
constantly putting pressure on across the court all game.
Despite a fantastic comeback in the last quarter the girls went
down by 1 goal, 22 to 21. B Grade is travelling along on its
merry way with another dominant performance. The opening
21-2 first quarter set the catalyst for the day with the ladies
trying different combinations throughout the match, going
on to record a solid 59-20 win. A Grade produced another
fantastic game to continue their undefeated season with a 6035 win. A terrific defensive game set up many opportunities
for the team to capitalise upon.
Our game is on Sunday this week and we will be welcoming
Bacchus Marsh to our courts, in what will be another tough
assignment across all grades.
Don’t forget to hang around after the games for a quick drink
upstairs.
Good luck to all playing today.
Go Northies.
Round 7
Last weekend the ‘G B Forestry Cobras’ welcomed Lake
Wendouree to Maddingley Park and unfortunately not all
results went our way on the day. In football the seniors
were playing for top of the ladder position and though
having plenty of the ball for most of the game, they could
not convert. Lake Wendouree were very slick with their
ball movement all day which on occasions caught our
players napping but to the GB Forestry Cobras credit they
fought the game out eventually going down by 21 points.
Best on the day were M. Denham, T. Shea, R. Mc Nay, D.
Burton, J. Trowsdale, L. Mullen
The reserves also had a tough and close game where
there was nothing between the 2 sides all day, going into
the last quarter the GB Forestry Cobras held a 2 point
lead however were over run in the last quarter eventually
losing by 17 points. Best on the day were T. Castrignano,
M. Whittle, T. Wardell, P. Hoyland, R. Shortis, D. Walker
The U18’s got off to a tight start but in the 2nd quarter
stamped their authority on the game lead strongly by D.
Bishop, B. Baldo, J. Johns, B. Croxford and L. Pigott with
L. Whyte-Marshall kicking 5 goals and eventually running
out victorious by 50 points.
In the Netball, again the girls came up against some
pretty tough opposition and unfortunately not all teams
were successful on the day. The ‘A’ graders lost their
game by 25 goals, best on the day - K. Ingham & A.
Symons.
The ‘B’ graders had a great win in a tight game running
out victors by 4 goals, best on the day - L. Tyrrell, B.
Walsh, S. Govan.
The ‘C’ graders also had a very tight game but were
unfortunate on the day losing by 2 goals, best on the day
- B. Botten.
The ‘D’ graders were not so lucky and were well beaten
on the day by 25 goals, best on the day - K. Pawlowicz.
The 19 and Unders fought out a very tight game but went
down by 3 goals, best best on the day – M. Mayne, M.
Forth.

BALLARAT FOOTBALL
UMPIRES ASSOCIATION REPORT
Done playing…How about Umpiring?
It seems pretty simple doesn’t it? Your playing days are done,
the body doesn’t quite feel up to it. You still love the game and
would love to stay involved.
It is happening at the elite level and more and more at
grass roots level where former footballers are becoming
increasingly involved in umpiring. Former Bomber and
Blue Jordan Bannister eked out 67 AFL matches across 10
seasons, never really hitting any lofty heights, was a handy
midfielder who probably had his best days at Carlton playing
on Essendon champion James Hird.
He has now umpired more AFL games than he played. He has
spoken about his love of umpiring in the media on numerous
occasions and has encouraged an old teammate in Andrew
Carrazzo to take up umpiring. Carrazzo has now commenced
umpiring in the VAFA with the goal of progressing to the
AFL like his former teammate. Likewise Leigh Fisher who
rolled out for St Kilda 55 times over 5 seasons and has now
officiated in more games than he played.
Decision making is obviously a large component of the
on field life of a central, boundary or goal umpire and a
playing background provides an ideal recipe for a successful
transition. Also with a former player you have the platform
(hopefully) of fitness required to run out a game whilst in
charge.
Whilst the focus of this initiate is focussed on two men who
made it to the top level in Bannister and Fisher the target
audience doesn’t necessarily have to be hitting elite local
players.
Have a look at any week’s local umpiring appointments and
you will see some familiar names from the past 5 years or
more. Past players and people who have never played before,
but all looking to make their mark as an umpire.
Get Fit…Get Paid….Good Call!
Umpire Related Issues – If any club has an umpire related
issue that they would like to discuss with the BFUA in 2016,
could you please email Gary Learmonth at gary@aflgoldfields.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
NETBALL REPORT
By AFL Goldfields Netball Manager Kim Bailey
It’s been quite a busy few weeks for Ballarat FNL
netball and it continues this week with the BFNL
Regional Victorian Netball League team, representing
the Central Highlands region, competing at Hisense
Arena this Sunday against the Gippsland Football
Netball League, who will be representing the Eastern
region of the 2016 RVNL competition.
The Champion Challenge brings the winners of
the two Open regions together from the Regional
Victorian Netball League to compete for the overall
title of RVNL champions.
This game has been a long time coming since our one
goal win over the Wendouree Netball Association in
the grand final in March this year.
The girls have been training intermittely since then in
preparation and have been full throttle for the last few
weeks as the big day approaches.
There have been some minor changes made to the
team since March due to injury and unavailability.
Mel Allen, who is unavailable on the weekend, has
also succumb to an ankle injury. Stacey McCartin is
also unavailable with a quad injury and Gina McCartin
in also unavailable.
Into the team comes East Point coach Sascha
Veldhuis, North Ballarat midcourter Olivia Jones and
Sunbury premiership defender Rebecca Anstey. The
side has also been bolstered by inclusion of North
City’s sharpshooter Jordyn Bibby and last year’s
Sally McLean medallist, Lauren Atkinson, who were
unavailable last year due to VNL commitments.
Kate McMahon will again be coaching the team and
is very excited with the group of girls that has been
assembled. This is the fourth straight year that the
BFNL has competed at Hi Sense, Arena but so far
have not been able to come away with a win. This
year Kate is very confident she and her team can turn
that result around.
60 | BFNL RECORD 2016
The team consists of:
Kate McMahon – Coach
Sonia Cann – Team Manager
Georgia Cann – Assistant Coach – Sebastapol
Lauren Atkinson - Captain – East Point
Jordyn Bibby – North Ballarat City
Ruby Parry – Redan
Sascha Veldhuis – East Point
Kara Hart – Lake Wendouree
Olivia Jones – North Ballarat City
Emma Henry – Redan
Rebecca Anstey – Sunbury
Emma Church – North Ballarat City
The game is the curtain raiser for the Vixens V Mystic
came and is due to commence at 10.20am. The girls
will be exposed to the same facilities as our elite
players in the ANZ Championships play at.
We wish Kate and the girls the very best of luck on
Sunday.
This week there some exciting games over the long
weekend. Sebastopol coming off a great win over
Sunbury, will have to point prove that they are a real
contender coming up against the undefeated East
Point who have been in scintillating form. Sebastopol
are going into the game undermanned and will have
to be at their very best to get over East.
Darley is a team that have made some big
improvements over the past few week and will take
on Ballarat who will be trying to recover after some
telling injuries.
Sunbury travel up the highway to take on Lake
Wendouree. This will be a big test for Sunbury after
last week’s loss to Sebastopol to stay in touch with
the top for.
Good luck to all teams over the weekend.
Happy Netballing.
