A
silver-plated brass captains’ bell now hangs in
the middle of the cancer center. Cancer survivor,
Micki Pettit, was the first patient to ring the large
bell, after completing radiation treatments for breast

“I’m honored to be the first person to ring the bell,”
said Pettit. “And it’s great to be done.”
(John Clark/The Gazette) Cancer survivor
Micki Pettit rings the bell to signal that she has
finished her treatments as Dr. Robert Doline,
left and staff from the CaroMont Cancer Center
look on.
The 7-inch bell was installed in July for patients to
ring in celebration of beating cancer. In the weeks
since Pettit completed her treatments, 14 other
patients have rung the bell.
“We wanted to come up with a signifying event for the patient recognizing that
she or he is a survivor now; a person that is moving on with his or her life,” said
Rick Varterasian, Oncology Service Line Director with the Cancer Center who
meet monthly.
“We’re always looking for ways to enhance our patient experience,” said Varterasian,
who says the idea for the bell ringing tradition came out of the Center’s Patient
Satisfaction Committee, which consists of a cross section of people, including
physicians, CaroMont Health diagnosed more than 1,000 cancer cases in 2010.

It’s Official! CaroMont Health Has Been Awarded
The North Carolina Baldrige Award for Excellence, Level Two.
What does this mean? This level is awarded to an organization that has demonstrated, through their commitment
and implementation of performance management principles, progress in building sound and notable processes.
The organization has documented a solid approach to system-level performance management and is implementing
plans and procedures.
Through all of the hard work and commitment from everyone of you, we have been successful in our initial steps
toward Baldrige. In the next few weeks, you will see more about this award and an official ceremony in which we will
be presented with the award. Each and everyone of you and your staff are responsible for this accomplishment.
It is important to remember that we don’t stop here, we will use the valuable feedback report to continue our journey
toward the National Baldrige Award. Together we can make this happen.
Take a moment this morning to say “Thank You” to every employee at CaroMont Health.
