BINGHAM GIRL HAS HIGH
HOPES FOR HER PRO
DANCE CAREER
Bingham-born and raised Alice Shepperson had
a promising professional dance career ahead of
her until last year, when she had to have invasive
surgery to remove her appendix. Alice was
forced to put her future dance career on hold.
Determined to continue dancing though, she
fought back, picked up her dancing feet and after
just a year endured an intense two-day audition
for Jasmin Vardimon’s Professional Development
Certificate Course (JV2).
Alice gained a place on the course that starts
in October. It will allow her to work closely with
one of the UK’s leading contemporary dance
choreographers, Jasmin Vardimon, who is also
an associate artist at Sadler’s Wells, a worldrenowned contemporary dance venue in London.
JV2 involves learning the repertoire from Jasmin
Vardimon Company, teaching classes and a
national tour of two dance theatre works.
Alice said: “I didn’t think that just a year after
my operation I would be privileged enough to
be chosen for JV2, I’m very honoured. I admire
Jasmin Vardimon and her company, all the work
created is such an inspiration to me.”
With a sincere request for help, Alice said: “It is a
lot of money but a career in dance is my life-long
She also became an understudy for Tangled
Dance Company and assisted at Dance4’s Centre
for Advanced Training (CAT) in Nottingham, where
six years ago she experienced her first taste of
contemporary dance.
Alice continued: “My first ballet class was
taught by Shan Jones when I was seven years
old at Bingham School of Dancing. I was then
introduced to Dance 4’s CAT, the scheme helped
me develop my devotion and dedication towards
contemporary dance. After three years at CAT
I successfully auditioned for Northern School
of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) where I have
graduated twith a BPA-First Class Honours.”
Alice’s Mum and Dad, Karen and Fred, who
have lived in Bingham for nearly 25 years, said:
“We are so proud of Alice and have continually
supported her throughout her dance training. Any
support others can give to aid Alice in her future
career aspirations would be brilliant.”
goal and I know this course will bring me one
step closer. And I will continue to work to raise
money for the course. I would be so grateful
for any donations received, big or small. And I
appreciate support towards my development as a
young dancer and an evolving artist.”
Throughout this year, Alice has already worked
for Berlin-based artist Tino Sehgal, and Lina
Lapelyte- an artist and musician from Lithuania.
“If you like our quality you’ll love our price”
That’s our promise!

Although Alice is excited about gaining a place
on the course and following her dreams, it comes
with a hefty price of £5,825. Alice is looking at
ways in which she can help raise some of the
money towards the cost of the course.

Chris Brinklow, her partner, is a professional
dancer that already knows how difficult it can
be in the performing arts profession. However,
he believes that with her determination she will
excel. He said: “I am so humbled by everything
Alice has achieved so far and I know that she
has worked tirelessly in order to give her the best
chance at accomplishing her goals.”

LOCAL BROTHERS
HAVE GREAT
SUCCESS AT BRITISH
TRANSPLANT GAMES
Park - the only event without age categories.
After getting through their first-round matches,
the siblings were drawn against each other.
Mark (48) and James (37) suffered from a
hereditary disease alports syndrome, which
affects males in their early 20s. Mark was on
dialysis for 20 months before a successful
transplant 21 years ago. James spent nearly
three years dialysing before his kidney transplant
11 years ago at St James’s hospital in Leeds.
The first competition was archery, with honours
even as the brothers both won silver in their
age categories. James attaining a better arrow
average than Mark and claimed first blood.
A close match, scored by their dad Roger and
watched proudly by their mum Joan, saw Mark
winning and eventually progressing to the final
and taking the silver medal.
James said: “was hoping we’d play each other
in the final. All sibling rivalry aside, it was great to
be at the Games with my brother and our parents
there to support us.”
Bumping into a fellow competitor met at the
Winter World Transplant Games, Mark got
enlisted in the basketball - a trial event for the
first time at the Games.
Over 700 transplant recipients, including
Ruddington resident Mark Brown, descended
on Newcastle and Gateshead to participate in
the 38th British Transplant Games. Four days of
sporting competitions in world-famous venues,
including Gateshead International Arena and St
James’ Park, saw competitors and spectators
meeting up with friends from previous Games
and forging new friendships in a competitive
environment. Mark was joined by his brother
James for their third Games together.
The brothers, who have both had kidney
transplants, decided to go head-to-head in three
disciplines and came home with five medals
between them.
Mark said: “I’ve not played basketball since
secondary school, and told my friend John I
didn’t have any shorts with me and couldn’t play
in my jeans. Unfortunately one of my team-mates
was stood next to me and said I could have his.
My wife Jo texted James to come and have a
laugh watching me, but soon got roped into
playing himself.”
Two-and-a-half strenuous hours later, with burst
blisters and aching limbs Mark hobbled off court
with a gold medal, James with a bronze. That
evening the opening ceremony saw the athletes
parading through the centre of Newcastle to
the town hall for the opening ceremony. The
games were declared open by Olivier Coustere,
president of the World Games Federation, while
the donor family flame was lit.

The most inspiring sights of the day was
seeing the look of delight on the young
competitors faces as they ran, threw and jumped
to rapturous applause.
The closing ceremony, held at Gateshead
Sage, saw trophies awarded to the bestperforming athletes and teams - all being invited
into the green room with Jeremy Kyle - who also
did a mock-up of his show on stage with some of
the athletes.
Mark concluded: “The Games are an excellent
showcase for the benefits of transplantation. “Since the local paper in Newcastle started
promoting the Games, over 23,000 have signed
the organ donor register.
Friday saw James just miss out on a medal in the
tenpin bowling and Mark frequenting the bunkers
at the golf competition. The evening saw the
brothers at the darts competition at St James’
R&C PLASTERING
Sunday was spent at the athletics track with
Mark and James both throwing the shotput - a
victory by a few centimetres to Mark and James
just missing out on the medals in the 100m relay.
“The most important point to note is to tell your
family your organ donation wishes as 42% of
next of kin refuse organ donation. A simple
conversation today will alleviate a difficult
decision at a stressful time.”

LOCAL COUPLE TO
UNDERTAKE MOUNTAIN
CLIMB, INSPIRED BY
THEIR SON
Victoria Shillaker and her husband Alec are
planning to trek up the second highest of the
seven summits after Everest. At 6,962m high,
they will walk through all fours seasons on their
journey to the top, from scorching heat at the
outset, through to temperatures as low as -30
degrees C at the summit.
Victoria told The Local News: “Our motivation
for this is our son, Finn, now almost three, who
contracted pneumococcal meningitis when he
was just nine months old. “It struck quickly. He was fine when he went
to bed the evening before, but running a high
temperature the next morning. I took him to the
GP who wasn’t sure what was wrong. However,
gut instinct said that something was seriously
wrong and so we took him to hospital. Before
long, he was diagnosed as having meningitis. “No-one could tell us whether or not he would be
OK, or even if he would survive and he continued
to deteriorate rapidly. Within 24 hours we found
ourselves in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.
He pulled through and we are incredibly lucky
that he appears to have no lasting effects.
"However, we feel indebted for our luck and
want to try and help other people whom may
be affected by this terrible disease. Hiking is
something my husband and I have always
enjoyed - he proposed whilst on the Three
Peaks challenge - and we have already tackled
Kilimanjaro, so Aconcagua seems like the perfect
challenge, although will physically be the hardest
thing we have ever attempted.
“Finn now loves hiking and has helped us in our
training, climbing up Snowdon and getting a lift
from dad in the baby backpack when tired.
“I’ve taken up running as part of my training and
have entered the Robin Hood half-marathon as a
goal to keep me motivated.
“We’re also trying to spend as much time as
possible hiking in the Peak District and Snowdon
to get used to the hills. We climbed Snowdon
three times in one day a few weeks ago for
endurance training.”

COTGRAVE PRIMARY
ACADEMY RECOGNISED
AT AWARDS CEREMONY The Flying High Trust has hosted a glittering
awards ceremony at the Trent Vineyard
Conference Centre in Nottingham to recognise
the outstanding contributions of individuals and
the academies within its group. Seven groups
of awards reflecting the trust’s ethos were given
out on the night, including the Aspiration, the
Responsibility, Creativity, Pride, Confidence,
Perseverance and also the Enjoyment Awards.
Guests at the event included Jason Beaumont
and Barry Mallon from Confetti and Tim Bush
from architects Baily Garner. An inspirational
speech was also delivered by Andrew Garner
who for seven years was chairman and CEO of
Boyden World Corporation (BWC). During Mr
Garner’s time at BW, the company grew to have
64 offices in 40 countries, adding further to a
dazzling career which included teaching Career
Management at Harvard University. www
The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com
Mr Garner said that he believed that The Flying
High Trust, and its CEO Chris Wheatley, had
courage and vision. "I am humbled at introducing
the awards to be honest,” he said. “I think this
is an extraordinary opportunity for everyone
associated with the Flying High Trust to recognise
the potential here, and that is from parents to
children. There is no Oxford and Cambridge in
primary education, - there is now, and it’s The
Flying High Trust. “You must therefore see this as an opportunity
to build on this phenomenon and the spirit
behind it that you have all witnessed tonight.
Just think what can happen in your children’s
lifetime and what that can do to help us overcome
life’s obstacles. ”
The Flying High Trust has member primary
academies all over Nottinghamshire, including
Cotgrave Candleby Lane (Cotgrave), Bilsthorpe
Flying High Academy, Peafield Lane Academy
(Mansfield Woodhouse), Ernehale Junior School
(Arnold), Hillside Primary and Nursery School
(Hucknall) and The Flying High Academy
(Ladybrook Mansfield).
FIRST COMMUNITY
SPEEDING INITIATIVE
Cotgrave Community Road Safety Team
launches the first-ever UK community initiative
to control speeding in the town. A team of six
Cotgrave residents have been trained to work in
conjunction with the local police using the latest
speed detection equipment.
Electronic speed monitor devices will be placed
at a roadside location in problem areas. These
signs will flash up the speed of oncoming
motorists, who will hopefully react if they are
going too fast. The vehicle will then be tracked
by a speed gun when approaching the roadside
team. The speed recorded should be within the
limit for the road. If they haven’t reacted then
details of the vehicle will be passed to the police.
Local resident, Harry Burrows, who has led the
town’s speed-watch team for the last three years,
was delighted with the launch. He said: “The new
system and equipment will prove to be a boon
to Cotgrave which, like most villages in the area,
suffers from speeding. It is very accurate and on
launch day showed how effective it will be.”
There are several other teams being formed in the
Rushcliffe area, which just shows how seriously
this problem is taken by the police.

NEW TRAM LINES UP
AND RUNNING
The south of Nottingham now has an exciting
link to Nottingham City Centre and beyond with
the opening of the new tram extension. The
new lines, one of which goes through Compton
Acres and Wilford, opened for service at the end
of August. It has been a long project and local
people have been very patient, but the area now
has a state-of-the-art method of transport.
Councillor Jane Urquhart, with lead responsibility
for NET at Nottingham City Council, said: “This
is a really great day for Nottingham. It marks the
dawn of a new era when NET becomes a true
network and, with trams running from every seven
minutes, it is all set to provide easier access to
key locations right across the city of Nottingham.
“The tram provides the backbone to the city’s
integrated transport network, underpinning all
the efforts to reduce congestion, improve the
environment and make Nottingham an even
better place to live, work or visit.”
09
to ride on Nottingham’s new tram system after
winning a competition. The Local News offered
a chance for residents to join dignitaries and ride
on the tram through Compton Acres and Wilford
before it was officially opened to the public.
Dan Stannard and his four-year-old son were
joined by Carol Pink and her husband, who
own local locksmith company, Nottingham Car
Keys. The excitement for all the guests was plain
see, especially on the face of Dan’s young son
(pictured below).
The winners were also able to spend time sitting
in the driver’s seat looking at the controls and
guests were treated to a buffet and drinks,
while a magician was on hand to keep everyone
entertained throughout the day.
Further details about fares and the new services
are available by visiting the NET website online
at thetram.net.
Alongside the construction of 17.5km of new
lines, the project has also seen the creation of
more than 2,000 free spaces at new park & ride
sites and a new tram stop at the redeveloped
Nottingham Station.
NET marketing manager, Jamie Swift, said:
“We know the construction process has
caused inconvenience and disruption for some
communities, but we hope they will soon start to
see that it has been worthwhile.”
ROWING CLUB LISTS
BAND MEMORIES
The rowing clubs of Nottingham, situated
between Trent Bridge and Nottingham Forest’s
City Ground, are part of the rock ‘n’ roll history of
the city and from the 1960s to the 1980s featured
some of the iconic bands of the country.
Dave Sharp, an active member of Nottingham
Rowing Club, has been part of the local music
scene since the early 60s.
He played lead guitar in ‘Blues and Roots’ in
the 60s, in ‘Cisco’ in the 70s and is now with
‘The Cyclones’ - a group which club members
suggested should be re-named ‘Rock and Roll
Dinosaurs’ or even ‘Rocking Pneumonia’.
He has been very active in club fundraising and
has been responsible for rebuilding a wing of the
clubhouse, purchasing new boats and keeping
interior decoration to a high standard with money
from the ‘Tea and Toast’ fund which provides
refreshments for crews training at the weekend.
Dave regards life at the rowing club as a lifesaver
since retiring from his graphic design business.
His latest project, put together by Ray Cross
Signs, is a panel on the club wall showing many
of the bands that have played at the Boat Club,
together with their records.
In the 60s, Spencer Davies recorded ‘Keep on
Running’ and ‘Gimme some Loving’ and Brian
Auger and Julie Driscoll had ‘Wheels on Fire’

FUNDRAISING PUPILS
founded by Notts charity Education for the
Children in one of the most impoverished areas
of Guatemala.
Pupils at a Rushcliffe School are some of the first
in the country to study the geography, economics
and culture of Guatemala, as part of a new
GCSE Spanish module. To end the pilot course,
the students held ‘Esperanza!’ - a huge Latino
festival that included singing, cooking, games
and dancing. This was undertaken to raise money
for poverty-stricken children in the CentralAmerican country. They also released 1,000
balloons in the colours of the Guatemalan flag. Dan Hardy, in Year 7 at Rushcliffe, was one of the
performers at the festival. He said: “I didn’t even
know where Guatemala was. I didn’t realise how
poor people were there. I thought that sort of
poverty was only in Africa and Asia. It makes me
thankful to be living in Nottingham.”
The Guatemala course, which has been trialed in
the school with Year 9 students, was created by
Eva Vicente, Rushcliffe’s head of languages and
Chantal Fritz from the EFTC charity.
Thousands attended the festival, including
pupils, parents and staff from Rushcliffe, its
feeder primaries and its partner schools, The
Farnborough Academy and Arnold Hill Academy.
Next year the module will be introduced into the
school’s GCSE Spanish curriculum and further
developed so it can be rolled out to other schools
around the UK. It was a huge success raising £2,600 for their
counterparts at The School of Hope, a school

Eva Vicente explained: “Working together with
Education for the Children and sponsoring the
school in Guatemala is helping us to inject new
life into the GCSE Spanish curriculum.
“Students are developing their Spanish language
skills while gaining insight into the culture of
Latin-America.
"The new module also explores very important
issues such as poverty and social injustice,
so it is expanding our students’ horizons and
developing their understanding of complex
social issues.
“We are so proud of how keen the students are
to raise money for this very good cause. In return
we all gain a stronger sense of appreciation for
the life we have and the urge to make the world a
better place to live in for all.”

LOCAL MAN MIKE
CONQUERS THE
NOTTINGHAM OUTLAW
Mike Whitehead, owner of Radcliffe
Physiotherapy in Radcliffe, talks about his
experience of the Nottingham Outlaw Triathlon.
The question I’ve been asked the most recently
is what made you commit to the long-distance
triathlon? Call it a mid-life crisis, my biological
clock was ticking.
In my 40th year I needed a challenge. The iconic
Outlaw Triathlon, run by One Step Beyond, starts
just two miles from my doorstep and I was going
to be on that start line this year.
I had to fit training around work and family
commitments. During the winter months I
established a deep and meaningful partnership
with my turbo trainer.
I settled into a winter routine - two hours of
swimming, three hours on the bike and three
hours running per week.
CROPWELL BUTLER
NURSERY RAISES £1,000
The regime was kept alive by my very public
commitment to completing the event.
Staff, children and parents at Millfield Nursery in
Cropwell Butler raised an amazing £1,000 during
their charity fundraising week. Amber, a member
of staff at the nursery, had leukaemia as a child
and When You Wish Upon a Star granted her and
her family a holiday to Tenerife, as Amber was too
poorly to go to Lapland.
Shortly after entering I started my online doodle
blog, recording my progress in words and
cartoon pictures.
On the back of a local paper article, I was even
invited onto a local radio station to chat about
it all.
If I can give any aspiring triathlete advice to keep
motivated, it would be to publicise your progress
on social media, so that you won’t be tempted to
duck out of it.
On race day it’s important to stick to your race
plan and listen to your body.
Most importantly, relax and enjoy yourself, soak
up the atmosphere.
Make sure you don’t give in, the body is an
amazing machine.
They felt that the charity is so very important
in granting wishes for children living with a lifethreatening illness and wanted to raise funds
because of the link with Amber and this was their
chance to give something back on her behalf. The children at the nursery held a sports day,
sponsored walk, pyjama day and general
fundraising fun. The funds they raised will go
towards sending a child to Lapland in December
to meet Father Christmas.
Whether you sprint or limp over that finish line,
it is undoubtedly one of the best feelings you’re
likely to experience.
Out of over 1,000 entries Mike came 139th,
finishing in a time of just 10 hours, 59 minutes
and 25 seconds.

VOLUNTEERS DONATE
DAY TO HOSPICE IN
RADCLIFFE-ON-TRENT
13
@
"A lot of the time it is easy to donate money or
sponsor an event, but we wanted to go a step
further and get fully involved with a tangible
project for all of our chosen charities.
“By visiting these charities in person and giving
our team members the opportunity to meet
with and get to know their staff, customers and
patients, we’re looking to create a new and
exciting tradition at PKF Cooper Parry making the
event an annual fixture in our calendar.”
Volunteers from a leading Midlands business
advisory and accountancy firm PKF Cooper
Parry have spent a day with a charity in Radcliffeon-Trent.
As part of the firm’s first-ever community week,
up to 100 team members were out and about
across the region, with all of them supporting
their chosen charities.
The first day saw 16 team members help out
in five Nottinghamshire Hospice shops, sorting
through donations, pricing up and creating eye
catching displays.
Partner at the firm, Richard Jones, who spent
the day at the Nottinghamshire Hospice shop in
Radcliffe-on-Trent said: “We’re really passionate
about supporting such a truly inspirational
charity which does amazing work in our local
communities, day in, day out.
“We were delighted to get behind the
Nottinghamshire Hospice, which provides
some much needed care for those battling lifechanging illnesses.
“The idea behind our community week is for our
team to actually feel like they are truly giving
something back and making a difference.

UPPER SAXONDALE
CHURCH TO CONSIDER
NAME CHANGE
The church Wellspring CGC, based in Upper
Saxondale, will be holding a launch event for
the change in their name this month. It has been
called Wellspring for almost 20 years but the
current pastors believe that the time is right to
change the name. The pastors, Dave and Lizzi Baskeyfield, have
a big vision for the church and lots of plans to
make it more relevant and influential in the local
communities. They decided, therefore, that a new
name would better represent the new direction
that the church is taking.
The church currently holds twice-weekly parent
and toddler groups. It has just started to help
maintain and improve the local estate’s public
gardens and it holds numerous events throughout
the year, such as community fairs, children’s
parties, quiz nights and Christmas events. Dave and Lizzi want to significantly increase the
services it offers to the local community and are
planning to hold marriage courses and youth
nights in the near future.
The church has also recently launched a
fundraising project called Operation Heatwave,
with the aim of raising enough funds for a new
heating system. NEWS FROM KEYWORTH
MEDIAL PRACTICE PPG
MOWGLI AND BALOO
SAVE CUB SCOUT PACK Some updates from the Keyworth Medical
Practice Patient Participation Group (PPG).
Bingham Gemini Cub Scout pack has been saved
from closure following an appeal in the Rushcliffe
Local News a few weeks ago.
Flu Vaccination Day October fundraiser
Last year this raised £355 which was brilliant,
can we make it more this year? If you could
contribute a prize, either small or large, it will be
most welcome. Please call 0115 937 4371.
When the pack returns this month, the current
leaders, Adrian Telford (Akela) and Andrew Peters
(Kaa) will be joined by Donna Johnson from
Whatton and Peter Aldridge of Bingham, who
have volunteered after hearing about the appeal
for extra leaders.
Dementia suffers and their carers
Do you care for someone with dementia? If
you do, please visit the new Memory café,
called Rosemary’s Café after the beautiful herb
associated with dementia. Meetings take place
on the second Tuesday of each month at the
Parochial Hall on the corner of Elm Ave and Selby
Lane Keyworth from 10:30am to 12 noon.
Keeping up the tradition of naming leaders after
characters from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle
Book, Donna will be known as Baloo (The Bear)
and Peter will be Mowgli (The Man-cub).
Both have been involved with scouting in the
past and felt that it was the right time to return
and help the community by volunteering on a
regular basis.
Getting an appointment
If you can try for Tuesday or Thursday as these
days are quieter and you have more chance
to get the doctor and time you would like. Do
remember though that all the doctors can access
your details on their computer.
As a result, Gemini Pack have now been able
to organise a full programme of events for the
autumn term, which includes a charity dodgeball
game, a hike, a conker contest, Halloween party,
campsite cooking and work towards the artist,
DIY, collectors and emergency aid badges.
Patients who work
As a PPG and patients of this practice, we know
that some employers are reluctant to give staff
time off during the day. It would be helpful for
those who don’t work to perhaps not book those
early or late appointments. This would enable
patients who work not to have to take time off.
For the artist badge, Long Acre Studios have
offered to help by hosting a visit to their art
gallery in October, so the cubs can display their
art project based on Jungle Book characters.

COMPETITIVE SWIMMING
IS ALIVE AND KICKING
IN RUSHCLIFFE
Nottingham Leander Swimming Club’s chief
coach, Maggie Kelly MBE, knows a thing or two
about big events, having swam at three Olympic
Games and been captain of the Great Britain
women’s team from 1975 to 1980.
But she also knows that you have to start small
and she is concerned that there is a lack of
young swimmers, and especially boys, taking up
the sport in Rushcliffe, despite the good provision
of facilities locally. She wants to attract more
swimmers to compete.
Maggie said: “We run sessions at East Leake,
Rushcliffe, Cotgrave and Keyworth, as well as
city pools, for would-be competitive swimmers.
17
"Most parents encourage their children to swim
and often arrange lessons. I am sometimes
asked how a youngster might get involved in
swimming as a sport, but not as often as I would
like. It does seem to me that we do not publicise
the benefits and accessibility of competitive
swimming enough.
“Research shows that boys in particular prefer
team sports, but people don’t realise that
swimming is intensely team-based. I wish more
children, especially boys, had a chance to
experience the exhilaration, fitness, friendship
and self-confidence that club swimming
generates. There is a real concern everywhere
that youngsters are not taking up the sport and
I would like to see all clubs, including mine,
making better links with schools and pools
to promote swimming as a sport. If you are a
primary school teacher involved in sport, we
would love to hear from you.
LADIES’ BACK TO HOCKEY
West Bridgford Hockey Club are running a series
of Ladies Nights hockey sessions - and they are
inviting anyone who would like to either get back
to hockey, or try the sport for the first time, to go
along and join in.
West Bridgford Hockey Club was formed back in
1928 and boasts 10 men’s, five ladies, a mixed
team and junior squads for both boys and girls at
under-10, 12, 14 and 16s.
Sessions will be held weekly from 6:30pm to
7:30pm, starting on 9th September at the club’s
home pitch in the grounds of West Bridgford
School, on Loughborough Road (NG2 7FA).
Further details can be found on the club’s
website by logging onto wbhockey.co.uk, or by
contacting the club's lead coach Bob Douglas by
calling 07738 762897.
“It’s possible to go all the way from, say,
Keyworth pool to the Olympic Games, but
however far you go there is a huge amount to be
gained from such a social and non-aggressive
sport. Many teachers will refer swimmers with
aptitude to us when they reach a suitable
standard. Leander also contributes to the
teaching choice by running its own ‘Tadpoles’
learn to swim scheme locally.”

LOST FRUIT LEADS TO
NEW IDEA FOR LOCAL
MAN BEN
Local man Ben Nichols is seeing his smoothies
business go from strength to strength after a
dramatic few years.
Ben started SoSmoothies – a fruit drinks
company – in his own kitchen as a teenager with
some entrepreneurial flair.
After a dramatic rise to success, he encountered
some of his first major problems.
He told The Local News: “I decided to take a
giant leap and order ingredients from abroad.
“Somewhere in France the fruit delivery went
missing, so it left me with no fruit, or money to
buy new supplies. I was in a bad place towards
the end of last year. All my money was tied into
fruit and I didn’t have anything to sell.”
So, Ben went to see his pals at Harry & Parker - a
food innovations company - and had a mug of
their new fruit tea.
They were talking so much that their tea went
cold. Ben then drank it and it was at this moment
that he had the eureka moment.
He said: “Why don’t we make iced tea? Over
the coming weeks Ben worked with the tea
mixologists at Harry & Parker and created a
range of iced teas.
“We have a two-strong range, Berry & Vanilla
and Mango Explosion. “They are brewed in
Nottingham with loose-leaf tea, which makes the
taste and quality of the products totally unique.”
The products are on sale in delis and
farmshops across the Midlands, including
Delilah, Gonalston Farm Shop and via the
new distributor, Harry & Parker Ben explains
it all here in a vlog https://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=xAiVUwTZvXo.

TAI CHI CLASSES
West Bridgford Tai Chi classes - for health,
fitness and relaxation - are run every Thursday
night (except two weeks at Christmas) in the
gymnasium at the West Bridgford School.
They meet from 7:30pm until 9pm and are a
small, friendly group, who are looking for new
members (aged 18 upwards) to join and learn
Tai Chi with them. Current fitness levels are
not important as this can always be improved.
They are a non-profit making group, using all
subscriptions to hire the school gym and provide
a small expenses return to the teacher.
The more members, the cheaper it gets. For more

by Cotgrave residents to share local news, events
and information, is being funded until 2020 by
Barratt and David Wilson Homes.
The developers, who are currently building the
first of 450 new homes in Cotgrave at Hollygate
Park, are funding the website, which was
originally set up by residents in collaboration with
small social enterprise VillageGreen Networks.
Sally Ward, director of VillageGreen Networks,
said, “Thanks to this donation from Barratt and
David Wilson Homes, Cotgrave can continue to
benefit from this website, which has proved a
brilliant resource since it was set up.
“I’d like to encourage new Cotgrave residents
moving into Hollygate Park to join the website to
discover more about their local area.”
The developers are donating £1,000 to the
website, which already reaches 25% of all
households in Cotgrave.
More than 800 local residents voluntarily signed
up as members, as well as representatives from
local groups, including the local Neighbourhood
Watch, Friends of Cotgrave Country Park and the
local branch of the Royal British Legion.
COTGRAVE’S CLAIRE WINS
SHOPPING PRIZE
Cotgrave’s Claire Jeffreys has won free shopping
for a whole year. The competition, which was run
by Banks’s Beer, was circulated in pubs across
the country with customers simply entering the
competition by sending the word ‘shopping’ via
text or online.
Claire says she is delighted as she has recently
purchased a small business with her husband
and that the money will be a great help towards
the family food shops, with a few little treats
along the way. “I’m really surprised I won the
competition,” she said. “It is a fantastic amount
to win and it will certainly come in handy over the
next couple of months.”

NEW STUDIO FLOOR AT
DANCE SCHOOL
Called ‘Hit The lights’, it takes place at
Loughborough Town Hall Theatre on 10th and
11th October. NEW DOG TRAIL NOW
OPEN IN RUDDINGTON
Ann Marchant and Kirsty Callender, principals at
Keyworth School of Theatre Dance, are looking
forward to the pupils and teachers starting back
to classes after the summer break. The Keyworth School of Theatre Dance
opened its doors nearly 40 years ago with a
handful of pupils and now has over 200 attending
weekly classes.
The Copper’s Dog Activity Trail at Rushcliffe
Country Park in Ruddington - Nottinghamshire’s
first playground for dogs – is now open to
the public. They will be returning to a refurbished studio at
Webster Hall in Keyworth. A sprung dance floor
has been installed and the whole room has been
refurbished.
Recent exams in July resulted in all pupils
attaining either Merits or Distinctions through the
International Dance Teachers’ Association.
The activity trail contains a series of obstacles
for the dogs and these include tunnels, ramps
and see-saws.
Pupils and their friends have had a busy summer
attending Musical Theatre Workshops based on
Bugsy Malone and they put on a fantastic show
to parents on the final day.
There are also special signs containing
instructions to help owners guide their dog
through each challenge.
This is just in time for the last few weeks of
rehearsals before the dance school’s charity
showcase next month.

SCHOOL SUPPORT
CREDITED FOR TOP
EXAM SUCCESS
The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com
Fellow student Victoria Thomas got four A*s,
seven As and a B and agreed that support was
available at the school.
PERFECT A-GRADES FOR
LOCAL YOUNGSTER
“I am really happy and so is my family,” she said.
“I’ll stay at Nottingham Emmanuel and take A
Levels now.
“It’s a really good school that offers support
when you need it. There is always someone for
us to speak to, especially if we were stressed at
exam time.”
Caitlin Hill who achieved one A*, seven As and
two Bs is also staying at the school to do her
A Levels.
“Every day we could go to the teachers for help
and they would stay for as long as we needed
them to,” Caitlin said.
The Nottingham Emmanuel School saw many
success stories on the recent GCSE results
day, but none could top the excitement of the
five girls pictured. All of the girls did better than
they themselves expected and one very happy
student, Noon Nassr (far left), thrilled her family
by achieving an exciting seven A*s, three As and
three Bs.
Noon said: “My results are better than I thought
they would be. I want to do A Levels now and
perhaps go onto Medicine.”
Her family were with her to collect the results
and her Mum was particularly pleased with the
outcome, saying: “I am happy and proud of her. I
would like to thank the teachers and staff. Noon
has worked hard and we are very happy because
the staff have worked hard with my daughter and
she got what she wanted.”
“They would do anything for us. That’s why I want
to stay here to take my A Levels because I know
the teachers are definitely here for me.”
Naomi Towner was also pleasantly surprised at
her results and she said: “I got a lot better than I
thought I would.
"I am staying here to do A Levels next term. We
had tons of support for these exams from staff
and at after-school clubs.”
Andy Wolfe, vice-principal at Nottingham
Emmanuel School, said: “It is great to hear
students say that we are providing good support
when they need it, but they should be delighted
that their own hard work has paid off.
“We are happy that so many of our students
will now join our sixth form and complete their
A Levels with us. We can’t wait to see their
future triumphs.”
Local News distributor Andreas Halner is
celebrating after perfection in his A Level results.
The Nottingham High School teenager achieved
five A*s in Biology, Chemistry, Physics,
Mathematics and Further Mathematics - and has
been accepted by Oxford University to study
Medicine. This is on the back of 13 A*s at GCSE
at Rushcliffe School two years ago.
He told The Local News: “I studied Biology,
Chemistry and Physics on timetable but
Mathematics and Further Mathematics off
timetable. It is pleasing to have scored five A*s
at A Level and for that I would like to thank my
family - and in particular my Dad - for the support
they provided me throughout my studies.
“I believe that studying Medicine at the University
of Oxford will provide me with an excellent
foundation to realise my passion for the sciences
and helping people."
The Nottingham Local News would like to
congratulate Andreas on his excellent results.

Friday 25th September 2015 11.15am – 2.15pm
THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW
arrives in The White Lion, Nottingham Road, and offers
local people the unique opportunity to come along and
have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a
firm spot cash offer without any obligation.
Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands
Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along
with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few
items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s
wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were
totally amazed to receive over £2,000.
Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel
estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So
why not take this chance to search through your attic,
drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting
on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find
our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly.
There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free
evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash.
Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are
numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit
to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex,
valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000.
The pub is well known to local residents and is well placed
with plenty of car parking available.
So on Friday 25th September you have the chance to
visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers
absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of
professional valuations and now his expertise is available at
no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours
and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders
are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands
Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers
willing to pay for these articles.
Listed below are a few items we require, but due to limited
space not everything is listed, so if you are in any doubt,
bring it along!

SEPTEMBER RECIPE:
APRICOT AND
ALMOND TART
By Kath Oakley
Grab the last of the summer apricots and enjoy
this easy and delicious dessert.
RECIPE
@
25
Dust with icing sugar and roll out the marzipan to
the same size as the pastry. Heat the Apricot Jam with two tabsp water and
brush over the marzipan.
Then place the apricots on top, brush with the
remaining jam and sprinkle with the almonds.
Bake for 25 to 30mins. Serve warm with cream,
or ice cream and enjoy. I think you will really enjoy it as it really is a
great recipe.
If you can’t find any apricots, you could try using
tinned apricots. It really is lovely.
With the summer coming to a close, this is a
good one to enjoy. Ingredients
- 100g Apricot Jam
- 320g sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry
- Icing Sugar
- 250g Marzipan
- 10-12 fresh, ripe and juicy Apricots cut in
half and stones removed, or two tins Apricots,
drained
- A sprinkling of Flaked Almonds
Method
Pre-heat the oven 200c, gas mark 6. Unroll
the pastry sheet and place on a large greased
baking tray. Your Local News

EDUCATION
NOTTINGHAM GIRLS’
HIGH SCHOOL CONQUERS
KILIMANJARO
A team of 14 of Nottingham Girls’ High School’s
bravest, boldest and most adventurous students
have been welcomed home after conquering Mt
Kilimanjaro as part of a challenging three-week
expedition to Tanzania.
Stay up to date on the go Facebook.com/nottslocalnews
"Our girls have accomplished so much in
Tanzania and know that with hard work, passion
and a drive to succeed, anything is possible. It
has been fantastic.”
In preparation for the trip, the school's Sixth
Form girls, aged 16 and 17, started training in
earnest 10 months ago with a training expedition
weekend in Staffordshire.
Since then they have followed a programme of
events designed to equip them with the skills
needed for a Tanzanian trek. The girls in the selfnamed ‘Kili Kids’, who were selected for the trip
based on the results of fitness tests and a written
application, raised over £50,000 for their trip to
Tanzania through a series of individual and group
fundraising events and activities.
The team visited the Swahili Coast and Dar es
Salaam, as well as completing an ambitious
12-day trek, ending up at the summit of Mount
Kilimanjaro, before spending three days
constructing a primary school classroom in the
village of Machame.
The expedition was led by Aysa Hardy from the
trip organisers World Challenge, alongside the
school’s head of outdoor learning, Jen Lynn.
She said: “The girls’ who took part in this
expedition have truly had their limits tested but
they faced their challenges head on and achieved
their goals.
"They worked hard, had fun and made some
incredible memories. It was an inspiration and
privilege to share this experience with them.”
Nottingham Girls’ High School head, Sue
Gorham, said: “We’re all so proud of our
students. A trip like this takes real strength of
character, commitment and courage – attributes
the team have shown in spades.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION
By Arnold Butler
During my daily work I travel several miles and
encounter severe and sometimes light traffic
congestion. Sometimes the congestion is
inevitable and other times it can be caused by
fellow motorists.
There are many examples which can exasperate,
frustrate or even anger a driver when congestion
occurs. However, a driver must learn to accept
these conditions and make sure they are not
contributing to the situation. I can remember a
situation when with a pupil. It must have been
about 5:30pm. We joined a dual carriageway by
a slip road. There was a vehicle behind us with
two bikes on the roof rack, (not important, just for
recognition) also joining the dual carriageway.
There are other examples which contribute to
congestion. Always assume when you come to a
junction or a crossroads, there is a box junction.
Wait till you can get past it before progressing,
so as not to stop across the junction and stop
other drivers entering or leaving the other road,
especially if it is an emergency vehicle.
Road positioning is very important. Make sure
when turning right into a road, if the road you
are on is wide enough make sure you position
yourself so that you are just left of the centre of
the road or just to the side of the white line.
29
This will enable other drivers to pass you on
the left. When approaching a left turn or a
roundabout make sure you indicate, this will
help any drivers waiting to emerge to assess
if it is safe to go, otherwise they could be
waiting unnecessarily.
Remember - be considerate, patient and if you
know there is going to be congestion, allow more
time for your journey. Tips given by Arnold Butler,
your local independent driving instructor, who
can be contacted on 0115 921 7579 or online on
the website at butlerdrivingschool.co.uk.
The two lanes were stop start. As soon as the
driver with the bikes realised the right lane was
going just a little faster he changed lanes, but
then we caught him up and passed him. He then
moved back to the left, then back to the right. All
the time he was doing this he was causing other
drivers to brake every time he moved into a gap
in the other lane.
By now he was about 100 yards ahead of us,
in the right lane. By the time we had reached
a roundabout a couple of miles further along,
we pulled up at the side of him, I ask was it all
worth it?

MAKING YOUR
DREAM WEIGHT
A REALITY
“Aideen and I have been friends for many years,”
said Bex. “And like most people, started this year
with vows to do something positive about losing
some weight.
"I had baby weight that insisted on not shifting
and Aideen had a wonderful family cruise booked
to get trim for, but the thought of dieting was not
appealing as both of us lead busy lives and need
energy, as well as wanting to enjoy ourselves and
not be miserable.
"We saw an advert for Slimming World in our
local shops and thought that we must at least
give it a try. What had we got to lose? Feeling
unsure of what going to a group to lose weight
would be like, we joined together.
"How different the reality was to the one we
thought it would be - seeing too many TV
sketches of slimming groups! The members
where so welcoming and friendly and put us at
our ease immediately. The consultant talked of all
the food we could have and to be honest we left
thinking this can’t possibly be true - eat all that
food and lose weight?
"Food optimising is about eating normal, real
foods. With making simple changes in cooking
methods neither of us has looked back. The
weekly sessions are when we all share both
recipe ideas, as well as ways to cope with the
week ahead and any of its challenges.
"We both cook for families and they don’t even
realise the lasagne, roast dinners, curries and so
on are healthier Slimming World recipes. As part
of a group we realise the ups and downs faced
by all of us and that weight-related issues are
common to most of us and it’s the group help
that helps us manage these things.
"We have both lost the weight we wanted to
lose, in fact five dress sizes between us and
we feel great. Energy levels have never been so
high and we can both say, hand on heart, that
our once low self-esteem has improved and
we’re so thrilled that we’re both now becoming
consultants and want to help you reach your
goals and feel as good as we do.
"I re-launch the Radcliffe-on-Trent group from 7th
September and Aideen re-launches the Bingham
groups on 8th and 9th September - and all the
details can be found on the next page."

- AN ANXIETY
WORKSHOP COMES
TO NOTTINGHAM
The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com
"My life spiralled out of control and led to panic
attacks, hyperventilation and no energy.
"I didn’t want to leave the house, had a lack
of concentration and an overwhelming feeling
of losing control. I spent years looking for help
and trying to find a magic pill, before finally
discovering that there isn’t one.
An inspiring bespoke, day-long workshop designed to help reduce stress and eliminate
worry - is coming to Nottingham, hosted by
experts Rob Holcroft and Tracy Collins.
"At last, with the help of life coaches, I have
recovered and that’s why I want to help others.
This has totally changed my life and I wanted the
opportunity to share that with others/"
The Freedom Liberte De-Stress Workshop was
the idea of West Bridgford businesswoman,
Susan Shaw.
The workshop takes place on Wednesday
30th September 2015 in the idyllic setting of
Swancar Farm, set amidst 250 acres of rolling
Nottinghamshire countryside.
She said: “Since the age of 17 I have been an
anxiety sufferer when the death of my Nana
triggered my deterioration.

DO YOU WANT AN
EVENING FITNESS
CLASS THAT IS AT AN
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL?
Yes, you want to keep fit, but perhaps to push
yourself to breaking point is not what you are
looking for? Well, by popular demand, Erika will be running an
intermediate level fitness class on a Wednesday
evening at The Becket School, which is located in
West Bridgford. She will be setting the class at a level higher than
her popular 50+ daytime classes, but keeping it
lower than the high-intensity fitness classes that
are currently trending. Even then, the choice of how high or how low
you take it will be yours.
Erika says that everyone is welcome to give her
class a go, no matter what gender, shape or age
they are, so just give her a call.
Maybe you want a fun activity to relieve the
days stresses or perhaps you are just not that
competitive anymore but know that you still want
some exercise to keep your heart strong and to
help maintain or achieve a healthy body weight.
Erika’s intermediate level classes will tick all
those boxes.
They start on Wednesday 2nd September at
7:40pm at The Becket School, Wilford Lane,
West Bridgford.
For more details give Erika call on 07967 190442

Constantly looking to improve the service that is
offered, Robin and his associate teacher Chris
Long have decided to offer new one-and-aquarter-hour Free Taster Sessions in the month of
September to people considering trying a course
of Pilates.
“This has really come from Chris,” said Robin.
"When we reviewed the Free Taster Sessions
we did in April, Chris felt that although we had
given the people who came along a good sample
of what Pilates is all about, by the time we had
completed the administration side of things
and talked a little about Pilates and answered
people’s questions - all important aspects of
the session - we only had enough time for an
abbreviated class.”
So, this time around, Chris and Robin are hoping
that the extra quarter of an hour will allow them
to complete a fuller class whilst covering all the
other aspects.

GARDENING
GARDENING DIARY
SEPTEMBER 2015
By John Draper
As we move into autumn, temperatures start
to drop and things start to slow down in the
garden, but there’s still plenty to be getting on
with. Weather-wise, there’s always the chance
of the first autumn frost, so keep an eye out and
be prepared to protect tender plants to keep
them growing.
Severe downpours are also possible, but
conversely there is also the possibility of
lovely sunny weather – even an Indian summer
heatwave. Keep an eye on the weather and
be prepared to water your plants whenever
necessary in dry conditions.
Flower beds & borders
For months of colour from winter to late spring,
you can’t beat spring-flowering bulbs. Planting
now will reap rich rewards next year and for many
years to come. September is the main planting
month, but you can still plant in October and
even November, if you don’t get round to it now.
If your summer bedding is starting to look
scrappy and going over, remove it and replace
with winter and spring-flowering bedding, such
as winter-flowering pansies, violas, polyanthus,
primulas, wallflowers, Sweet William and
bellis daisies.
Stay up to date on the go Facebook.com/nottslocalnews
It is important to plant these sooner rather than
later to give them time to establish before the
colder weather arrives. The bigger the plants by
the end of autumn, the better they’ll perform.
Patio gardening
Don’t be fooled by autumn showers. No matter
how much rainfall your garden receives, your
patio pots, planters and hanging baskets still
need to be watered regularly.
Always aim to keep the compost evenly moist –
not bone dry, then waterlogged. Regular feeding
with a high potash liquid plant food will help
your plants to continue flowering until the first
severe frosts.
Once your summer plants are past their best,
replant containers with winter heathers, trailing
ivies, dwarf evergreen shrubs and springflowering bedding plants to ensure great displays
through winter and into spring.
Replenish the compost with fresh and add
a controlled-release feed to keep the plants
growing and flowering well.
- Over seeding
- Autumn feed
Grow your own
Vegetables
Continue to feed tomatoes still in crop with a
liquid tomato food – as the days shorten, this
liquid feed can be invaluable in helping ripen the
last fruits of the season. This high potassium
plant food will also speed up the ripening of
sweet peppers, chillies and aubergines.
Maincrop potatoes should be ready to harvest
when the top growth starts to die down and
has turned brown. Cut off the dead stem and
then leave for 10 days before starting to dig up
the tubers.

AUTUMN LAWNCARE
After a summer of hard wear and periods of dry
weather, your precious lawn deserves a helping
hand so that it can recover this autumn. Here are
a few tips from Lawnkeeper on how to prepare
your lawn for the winter and make sure it is thick
and healthy for a really green start next spring.
Keep the surface clear
If fallen leaves are becoming a problem in your
garden, try to remove them from the lawn as
regularly as possible. If you wait until all the
leaves have dropped, your grass will be fighting
for survival under a cold damp blanket of moist,
rotting vegetation.
If you don’t treat the moss with a suitable moss
killer before raking it out, you may inadvertently
spread the spores around the lawn and make the
problem worse.
Compaction is one of the biggest problems
with lawns.
Aeration in autumn will quickly help to strengthen
the grass by improving drainage.
Without help, vital rainwater may run off a dry
lawn and be wasted.
Lawnkeeper can aerate the lawn which will allow
rain, air and nutrients to penetrate more deeply
and at the same time relieve any compaction.
Feed the Lawn
After the constant mowing of summer, the
grass deserves a feed before the onset of winter,
so that it is strong and green. Lawnkeeper
chooses a special autumn fertiliser which
contains balanced nutrients and some slow
release nitrogen.
This ensures that you will be rewarded with a
greener lawn this autumn and in spring with a
lawn which is sturdy and refreshed, ready for
another summer’s use.
For a free lawn analysis, please call Peter on
0115 822 9942 or 07815 669953, email p.triffitt@
lawnkeeper.co.uk or visit lawnkeeper.co.uk
Try to do the job at least weekly throughout
autumn to avoid any problems of disease. A rake,
besom broom or mechanical collector will help
you collect the leaves for your compost heap.
Alternatively choose a lawn mower, which will do
the job quickly and easily.
Rake the surface
If you have left the grass box off the mower
during the summer or you have a hover
machine which doesn’t collect the grass cuttings,
then a layer of thatch will have formed on the
soil surface.
Not only does this layer prevent rain water
getting through, but it prevents grass plants from
spreading and encourages diseases.
There are plenty of tools which can be used to
remove this thatch – a spring-tine rake, ordinary
garden rake or a mechanical raker. A couple of
weeks before you carry out this scarifying, check
for moss invasion and treat this with a product
that contains a moss killer.

LAWN TREATMENTS
PROGRASS STYLE
The first thing you get when you have a lawn
treatment done by Prograss - your local,
independent lawncare company - is a full visual
inspection of your lawn.
During this inspection, the qualified, experienced
lawn operator will determine which product to
apply and at what rate it needs to be applied to
maximise the effect it will have.
Prograss use only the best fertiliser spreaders
and knapsack sprayers and they are calibrated to
distribute 50% of the required rate. The lawn is
then done twice carefully which greatly reduces
the risk of error.
Prograss also use only the best-quality fertilisers
which have the lowest scorch risk plus child and
pet friendly and are designed to last well into the
time that the next treatment is due.
Their weed control and moss products are as
environmentally friendly as possible and are
He will also analyse any other issues the lawn
may have, such as weeds, disease and moss
- and take appropriate measures to deal with these.
He will then return to his van and carefully
measure out the products and take his time
applying them to your lawn with great care and
attention to detail.
Prograss lawn operators are trained that taking
your time and being careful is the most important
thing when applying the top-quality products that
Prograss use.
Mistakes are only made when this process is
done without care and rushed. For example, if a
fertiliser is to be applied at 30g per m2 and the
operator mistakenly either overfeeds or misses
some, then the results will be poor and in some
cases disastrous.

applied at the safest dilution rate to reduce the
risk of affecting anything else in the garden.
A final but important touch is the operator using a
petrol blower to remove any surplus product from
surrounding patios, steps driveways etc to avoid
the chance of any staining.

ADVICE FROM
DUNCAN ROSS:
ARTIFICIAL GRASS
- WHERE TO USE IT
SUCCESSFULLY
It is durable yet soft to touch. Make sure you
choose a product with an ISO certification.
Shock pads can even be added under the grass
for extra protection.
Anyone listening to the David Vine show on BBC
Radio 2 may know that using artificial grass is a
hot topic. It seems to be a marmite product, you
either love it or hate it.
Artificial grass is here to stay as it provides an
alternative landscaping surface that was not
available before.
How its reputation prospers depends on it being
used sensibly in the right situations.
For some people, their lawns are just a
constant struggle because of poor soil, shade or
excess wear.
Replacing the lawn with artificial grass is
becoming increasingly popular.
The appearance of the modern generation
is so real it is often indistinguishable from the
real thing.
It has a fraction of the maintenance requirements
and looks lush and green all year round, even in
drought conditions.
If you happen to be away a lot, there are
no cutting issues and you come back to an
immaculate lawn.
Its most successful applications are in kids
play areas where grass will not survive under
trampolines or around swings/slides.

The question "why do I service my mower" is
the same as "why service my car?” It's to avoid
breakdowns and inconvenience.
Artificial grass does not stain or become muddy,
so many pet owners are converting to artificial
grass having become fed up with their patchy,
muddy lawn.
You achieve a better looking lawn for less effort
with professionally sharpened cutters and a
properly serviced engine.
No more muddy paws coming back into the
house is a definite bonus.
It can also be successfully used to cover over
slippery decks and terraces.
Even electric mowers need servicing. The mower
is easier to use and saves energy and possibly
the cost of a new one.
But please remember that artificial grass is not a
direct replacement of your lawn.
Often neglect catches up with you at the most
inconvenient time.
It should be viewed as a 20-year plus product. To
achieve this, a suitable sub-base and membrane
needs installing.
Cutting Edge Mowers is a family business with
traditional values of service and all the skills of
professional engineers.
We install for a national supplier Namgrass and
if an approved installer is used, their products
come with a 10-year guarantee.
We aim to repair and service mowers to return
them to as new performance and better as
carefully and economically as possible.
Like many things in life, the preparation is very
important indeed.
Our speciality is cylinder mowers and we
prolong the good cutting life of cylinder mowers
by creating a scissor edge to give a better cut
which last longer than the cheaper methods
others use.
Used sensibly and in the circumstances
highlighted, these products will have a very
successful future.
We are also sharpening specialists for DIY and
garden tools.
We have been building high-quality gardens
locally for over 25 years.
Prove it for yourself, why not get in touch with us
as soon as possible.

can register their interest at trentbridge.co.uk to
stand the best possible chance of attending.
The match against Sri Lanka is the first in the
five-match series, where as the third one-day
international against Pakistan will follow clashes
at the Ageas Bowl and Lord’s.
Interest in next summer’s international
programme has been heightened by England’s
recent Ashes triumph and the explosive nature of
the 3-2 ODI series victory over New Zealand.

The international season in 2016 will start with
England facing Sri Lanka across all three formats
from May to early July, followed by Pakistan’s
first tour of this country since 2010 from July to
early September.
“Alastair Cook was absolutely right to
acknowledge the contribution of England’s fans
to our Ashes success,” said ECB chief executive
officer, Tom Harrison.
“They have been unwavering in their support this
summer and we would urge as many as possible
to return to our venues next summer and get
behind our men’s and women’s teams again.
”Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka will also attract
strong support from their own communities in
this country, which all adds up to another exciting
summer of international action played in front of
packed houses for all three formats of the game."

LOCAL GIRLS WIN SILVER
MEDALS IN JUNIOR
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.com
The Nottingham girls are funded from the Carl
Smith Memorial Fund. In their first round they
won convincingly to qualify for the semi-final of
six boats, with three going to the A final.
The girls, stroked by Anna, had a good win
ahead of Canada and Switzerland, with Romania,
Denmark and Argentina going to the B final.
KATIE & ED TAKE BRONZE
AT WORLD UNDER-23
ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS
In a tense and hard-fought A final race, over
the full 2,000m Olympic distance, the crew was
sandwiched between Germany and the United
States, with Canada, Switzerland and France in
the other lanes.
Two local girls have just returned from Rio-deJaneiro with big smiles on their faces and a
silver medal in their hands from the Junior World
Rowing Championships.
These championships doubled as a pre-Olympic
test event and initially the quality of the water in
the rowing lake was a major concern, but this
was overtaken by the weather and the threat of
strong winds meant that all finals were brought
forward a day to the Saturday.
The rowing lagoon is 10 minutes away from
Ipanema Beach, with the spectacular backdrop
of mountains, the Tijuca Forest and the iconic
Christ the Redeemer statue at Corcovado, which
can be seen by those paddling on the lake.
Anna Thornton from Nottingham Rowing Club
and the Becket School, along with club-mate
Kyra Edwards from the George Spencer School,
were joined by Suzannah Duncan and Molly
Harding for the GB Women’s Quadruple Scull.
It was quite choppy with a strong crosswind.
Germany took an early lead, Great Britain were
second and pushing hard, the USA third and
France fourth.
The ‘A’ finals of the World U23 Rowing
Championships were held in Plovdiv in Bulgaria
over 2,000m of perfectly flat water and featured
two local rowers. Crews from 51 countries with
800 competitors raced at the event.
These positions remained the same throughout
the race, with Switzerland fifth and Canada sixth.
Suzannah Duncan told The Local News: “We had
a good start, caught two crabs before the 1,000m
and took the silver.
"Most importantly we have no regrets. We had
the best row we could and we are pleased with
the result.”
The crew is coached by British Rowing’s Ade
Roberts, a one-time West Bridgford resident who
now lives in Draycott.
President of Nottingham Rowing Club, Keith
Atkinson, said: “The club is proud of our girls,
they did brilliantly.
“It follows Katie Bartlett’s bronze in Bulgaria and
Grace Clough is off to the World Championships
in Aigubelette in France. It is all showing the club
in a very good light.”
Ed Fisher, who now rows from Leander Club,
rowed bow in the lightweight coxless four. Katie
Bartlett, called up by Rowing Team GB for the
ninth time, rowed two in the women’s eight. In
a dash to the line with the GB women closing
rapidly on the Russians, they were declared
bronze-medal winners. Ed too was a bronzemedal winner in a race won by Italy, with Germany
in second place.
Katie is in a strong group of rowers that have
Tokyo 2020 in their sights. A loyal member of
Nottingham Rowing Club, she has local sponsors
like ‘Insideland’ and trains at the National
Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepont. Since
early success at the National Schools Regatta,
she has followed the club’s pathway to success
and now has two World Championship medals.
