NOV/DEC 2009 NEWS BREAKING NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF NRGFUEL SPORTS NUTRITION ISSUE 3 CUTTING EDGE NEWS WWW.NRGSTOP.COM 3 SUCCESSFUL START TO SUPER SIX 4. MEET OUR EXPERTS - JOHN CLARKE On the 30th August I competed at the UKBFF (United Kingdom Bodybuilding Fitness Federation) Kent Classic British Qualifier in the under 80kg class. This was a step up in class for me as I had previously competed in the intermediate under 80kg class. During the off season I knew I had to bring more size to the stage as I will be competing against some guys that have won National titles and some have competed at World level so everything had to be spot on. I worked very hard in the off season ensuring that my nutrition and supplementation was 100% and that I was getting enough food and rest to fuel my workouts and grow. I have mentioned this previously but I actually decreased my days in the gym to 3 days per week and increased my food intake to around 9 meals per day and also used a variety of NRGFUEL supplements which include Glutamine, Creatine, TTP, Whey protein and my favourite Transporter. The reason for me decreasing my training days was that you grow outside of the gym with a good balanced diet and plenty of rest. The easy part is the training, if an individual does not have the correct nutrition and is not getting enough rest their results and gains will suffer. PICTURE COURTESY OF SPORTS.SHO.COM Entering the ring after 2am local time due to American television demands, Froch (25-0, 20KOs) was the hunter in the contest controlling the ring for 10 of the twelve rounds, looking to land heavy blows against a largely negative Dirrell. After the fight Carl said “ We never really stood and had a good trade and got going with anything. I’m a little bit dissatisfied but I can only beat what is in front of me. Anyway a win is a win he cant expect to come to Nottingham and beat me by running and holding.” CARL WAS NOT PHASED BY THE RESULT AS HE HAD MADE A SUCCESSFUL 3RD DEFENCE OF HIS WBC TITLE HE WON IN 2008. Although he disagreed with the split decision he said “ That professional boxing, it’s subjective scoring.” Carl said “Through the whole fight, I didn’t feel hurt or jaded or phased it was just comfortable.” WELL DONE CARL, YOU DID GREAT AGAIN AND WELL DONE NRGFUEL FOR GIVING HIM THE STRENGTH, STAMINA AND ENDURANCE NEEDED FOR SUCH AN ARDUOUS FIGHT. NRGFUEL’S Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch secured a split decision victory over Andre Dirrell to retain his WBC super-middleweight title and make a winning start to the Super Six World Boxing Classic. The showdown at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham was both fighters’ opening contest in the six-man tournament, pitting the reigning WBC Super Middleweight champion against unbeaten Michigan fighter Dirrell. Froch, 32, was the clear favourite heading into the clash while Dirrell came into the contest with an unblemished 18-0 (13 KOs) record and with an undoubted pedigree as a 2004 Olympic bronze medallist. Former middleweight champion Arthur Abraham kicked off the Super Six World Boxing Classic with a superb bonuspoint knockout victory over American Jermain Taylor. Taylor was comprehensively outboxed by slick stylist Abraham, who quickly got the measure of his opponent What’s next? Andre Dirrell is now the third successive impressive name on Froch’s record and a winning start to the Super Six series, which began earlier in the evening with Arthur Abraham’s last-round knockout of Jermain Taylor. The first round concludes in California on November 21, when Mikkel Kessler defends his WBA title against Andre Ward. Win or lose, Kessler is due to be Froch’s next opponent, probably in Copenhagen in early March. If Kessler beats Ward, two titles will be on the line. “When I beat Kessler, maybe I’ll get the accolades I deserve,” Froch said. “He can box, but he’ll stand and fight, rather than hold and moan.” before building a healthy lead and blasting him out with seconds remaining. Taylor, formerly the undisputed middleweight world champion, unsurprisingly took the role of aggressor against his Armenian-born German opponent but found Abraham’s defence hard to penetrate. Abraham gradually came out of his shell and despite being less aggressive, was landing the cleaner shots. With seconds remaining, Abraham caught his outclassed opponent with a monstrous right hand on the nose which knocked Taylor out and secured him a well-deserved third point. On the show day I arrived at the venue and was over the moon to see that some of the NRGFUEL Management and staff had come all the way to support me it was great to see them there, my parents and girlfriend had also made the long trip. I weighed in just under 79kg which is an increase of around 12lbs from the British final 9 months previous. I was delighted with this as all the hard work I had put in during the off season was worth it and had paid off and for those that don’t believe in quality supplementation and diet this is proof that it does work! Finally a big, big thank you to NRGFUEL especially the owners Ady and Val who are always behind me 100% and allow me to use their fantastic range of products...I hope I do them proud at the final. Dear Santa, Christmas is coming and I’ve been really good this year. I’ve re-cycled my rubbish, looked after my dear old granny and not leered at too many young women. I don’t ask too much in general I know I won’t get that white Porsche or a night out with Cheryl Cole but I do believe that if I could build myself a fantastic physique the world would be my oyster. I’ve seen the ads for NRGFUEL saying ‘Dare to Dream’. Well Santa you can help...Please please please fill my sack with the following: 1. It was a very tough class with 14 of the countries top figure girls all putting in their all for the trained figure title, it was a fight to the end with some oustanding routines with all the glitz and glamour of bling bikinis and flawless tans! WWW.NRGSTOP.COM 5 CAROLINE OLIVER Q&A WITH CARL FROCH 6. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS WWW.NRGSTOP.COM WORLD EXCLUSIVE: Valerie Brown ‘at NRGFUEL’ interviews WBC Super Middleweight Champion Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch Some first debuts from some outstanding athletes, who did all they could to challenege me to the top spots, I’ve trained as hard as ever this year and looked over my fellow competitors with a fine tooth comb, to beat them all and be crowned Figure Champion is amazing!!! My next step for next year would be to fight for a placing on the worlds stage and become a world class athlete. Caroline shows off her very impressive winning figure after being crowned the Figure Champion at the NPA British Finals 2009. Now thats what I call ‘Girl Power’! we will be catching up with Caroline after her well deserved break with an exclusive interview and some tips on how to shed them unwanted pounds that you put on over the Christmas period, so look out for this in the next issue. TRACEY DOUGAN GIRL POWER! Well I finally did it.... my first figure show and not only that I got a very respectable 2nd place and with it an invite to the British Finals. Considering it was never about winning for me I am BUZZING! At the pre-judging I was so nervous I was sure the judges could actually see my legs shaking, ha! But I received so much support from the judges, fellow competitors and the audience that by the evening show I was raring to go. I had by far THE loudest crowd, they were so loud in fact that I had to ask them to quieten down when I was on stage because I couldn’t hear my music, funny! After it was over my mates were there waiting with some chocolate brownies - bliss, and most importantly a drink! Oh and in case you remember from the last article, no Jodie Marsh didn’t show up, maybe next year eh?! But I reckon she’s too much of a party girl to ever compete, who knows? Anyways as much as I loved it on that stage I have decided to decline my invite to the British finals, I don’t think this is my year but I’ll be back next season leaner and meaner! Best of luck to all competitors but in my eyes anyone who steps on that stage is a winner already. WORKOUT - BICEPS No matter what your reason for taking up weight training, I can’t think of anyone who doesn’t want bigger biceps. I like to refer to the bicep as the glamour muscle. As soon as someone finds out you lift weights they don’t ask you to flex your calves, they ask you to roll up your sleeves and flex your biceps. Out of the thousands of exercises that can be performed at the gym, odds are at any given time there will be more people training biceps than any other muscle. Everyone wants bigger, fuller biceps. Much of Arnold Schwarzeneggers popularity was due to his monstrous arms. Try the workout below to add a few inches to your guns! EXERCISE This event requires the athletes to lift a 155 kilo axle over their heads as many times as possible over 75 seconds. The event was held at the picturesque location of Wield izZurrieq, right on Malta’s rocky coast. For over three decades The World’s Strongest Man has tested the limits of human strength, power, and endurance. The best strongmen on the planet and the most demanding challenges like Atlas Stones, Fingal’s Fingers, Truck Pull and the Keg Toss make the World’s Strongest Man the premier event in strength athletics. Local Nottingham Gym owner Jimmy Tobin and Worlds Strongest Man enthusiast Shaun were front row in the finals of this years thrilling competition which took place on the 1st-3rd October in the glorious sunny surroundings of Malta. The Boat Pull was set to follow the morning’s action located around the corner of the bay, with the natural high cliffs giving spectators a perfect view of the event. The athlete’s task was to pull a 300kg boat up a 20 metre slope. The Final Day - it’s down to the wire! Car Deadlift For Reps The day started with all 10 finalists keen to win the competition, each fighting for the chance to raise the famous Worlds Strongest Man trophy, with only a few points between them this is probably the strongest group of finalists for many years. REPS 3 12 2. ALTERNATE DUMBBELL CURLS Exercise Advice: You can perform this exercise by either standing or sitting on a bench, whichever you prefer. Grab a dumbbell in each hand and let each arm hang at your sides. Slowly curl the dumbbell in your left hand trying to touch it to your left shoulder. While you are performing the movement, turn (i.e., supinate) your palm outward and squeeze your bicep for a one-count at the top of the movement. Slowly lower the dumbbell to the start position and repeat with your right arm. 3 12 3. CONCENTRATION CURLS Exercise Advice: Sit or kneel and hold a dumbbell in the right hand. Bend forward, keeping the abs engaged and prop the right elbow against the inside of the right thigh. Contract the bicep and curl the hand towards the shoulder without moving the elbow. You don’t have to touch your shoulder. Lower all the way down (keep a very slight bend in the elbow to keep tension in the biceps) and repeat. 3 12 1. BARBELL CURLS Exercise Advice: Grab a barbell with an underhand grip. Stand straight, with your feet shoulder width apart. Let the barbell hang from your arms at arms length. Must: Keep your elbows to your sides at all time. Not moving your elbows from position, use only your forearms to pick up the barbell with your bicep strength. Hold this for a few seconds to maximize the contraction, and then go back down to starting position. barrier or away from it. This leads to the offending player being sent to the penalty box, which is a lovely idea, usually for 2 minutes and they cannot be substituted during this time leaving the team a player down. SETS Overhead Lift Apollo’s Axle EXERCISE ADVICE WWW.NRGSTOP.COM The pinnacle of The World’s Strongest Man competition, and this year it came down to the last event - The Atlas Stones! The stones range from 100kg to 160kg and are placed on top of 5 plinths. The opening game for the Panthers was against Belfast and it seemed to me that Belfast were all about brawling. It seemed that a lot of the Belfast players were being sent to the penalty box on a regular basis to cheers of ‘sinner’. In fact, there were chants all through the game with special ones being reserved for goals, which I have been reliably informed are the same ones used for goals at the Forest ground. Day 1 of the Finals Giant Farmers Walk This was a trend that has continued with the panthers winning at every home game so far this season which has seen them climb straight to the top of the leader board for the Elite league. Giant Farmers Walk had an impressive win by Mariusz Pudzianowski with a time of 25.05 seconds, a winning margin of over 6.5 seconds. Second placed Derek Poundstone came in with a time of 31.63 and Laurence Shahlaei coming in third with a time of 33.54 seconds. Only one competitor failed to complete the event. This is traditionally where legends are created and champions are defined. It was truly a very eventful final and you will not be disappointed with the results but unfortunately you will have to wait until the show is aired around Christmas time - sorry! I was keen however to find out more. As you can well imagine with a game this fast paced, players are often slammed into the side of the arena and this is perfectly fine providing it is not done face first. There are a number of penalties for interfering with players against the So far in the first five games I have seen goals in the last 15 seconds of play and a fight started by one of the Belfast team in the first 3 seconds. All this in a friendly family atmosphere, in fact there is a young girl of about 6 who usually sits just in front of me who is a very vocal fan. NRGFUEL ATHLETE - NICKI DE LA SALLE WWW.NRGSTOP.COM NRGFUEL SUPPORTS LOCAL ATHLETE At the age of 14 I played in the women’s National Premier League and was soon after selected to represent England under 16’s and went on to achieve one of my biggest honours to date, to play in the first ever women’s game to take place at Wembley Stadiums Twin Towers. I represented Chelsea Ladies for 6 years, captaining the side, competing in the league, the FA Cup and the League Cup whilst continuing to gain International honours. I am now linked to Nottingham Forest FC on an assistant basis but have turned my focus elsewhere to a new challenge, middle distance running. I started training for athletics with Nott’s A.C in April 2008. I soon after competed in track and field, cross country and road races. The training and competitions are fierce and require me to be at an optimal level. In my short time within athletics I have already achieved a lot. I moved up from West London to Nottingham 2 years ago but still travel down south in order to compete in the Middlesex County Championships. I became county champion in cross country and track in my first entry to the races and have gone on to gain county honours for Middlesex, for both cross country and 3000m on the track. My aims within athletics are to compete on an International stage. This is however one asset that has caused me concerns in the past and could seriously hinder my ability to perform at the highest level, nutrition. Whilst attending an England football training camp in the past, I became very ill. Later I was diagnosed with coeliac’s disease, a condition meaning I have a very serious allergy to gluten. Although I have controlled my diet well, avoiding gluten can be extremely difficult. In the past I have suffered from anaemia which has led to immense tiredness and the inability to train or compete due to missing out on vital components within my diet. Recently I also suffered a stress fracture in my right ankle which has meant I have had to spend a lot of time in local pools aqua jogging to retain my fitness. Although biomechanics played a part, physios have since told me that the stress fracture itself was possibly due to overuse and possibly as a result of exhaustion and failure to replenish my body, resulting in a decreased bone density and possibly muscle wastage. In order for anyone to perform to their best ability and cope with the intense training and fierce competition it is essential that your body is fuelled correctly. NRGFUEL has offered me the chance to optimise my performance by allowing me to fully recover and prepare for each and every training session. Via the use of NRGFUEL’s product T.T.P I am ensuring I am getting all the nutrition my body requires in order to enable me to compete at the highest level possible. My training involves daily cardiovascular runs, speed work and circuit training, sometimes training twice a day. NRGFUEL has significantly aided my return to athletics following my injury, allowed me to meet the high training demands, enhanced my recovery and arguably most importantly, helped me stay injury free. I am truly grateful to NRGFUEL for providing me with such a great product and am certain it will raise my chance of reaching great heights within athletics. “When taking NRGFUEL products I feel stronger, faster and believe I have the ability to train for longer periods of time at the same intensity.” Nicki de la Salle Don’t take the lift, take the stairs! Well, it may also burn more calories, at least in the long run. Researchers at Maastricht University in the Netherlands concluded that people who engage in moderate physical activity, such as walking and biking, had the highest overall physical activity levels. Their study of 30 men and women over a two-week period also revealed that those who exercised vigorously for short periods of time compensated for that activity by spending a greater part of their day being sedentary. Sure, vigorous exercise burns more calories, but the moderate exercisers tended to be more active overall. The next “King Of The Ring” tournament will be held at the Harvey Hadden Stadium in Nottingham on December 5th where there will be 4 title fights on the night including big names such as Wayne Buck, Ricky Gammon, Jimmy Warhead and more. The crowd were going wild loving the action and as round three started Jimmy’s superior conditioning was obvious as he stepped up the pace to finish the fight within the distance. Hammering his opponent with blows to the head and body, the crowd could not believe the referee did not stop the fight, but handed further breathing space by giving him another standing count! At the final bell the crowd were not disappointed as a victorious Jimmy Kram had yet again put on a very professional display resulting in an impressive victory. I can safely say that we will all be looking forward to seeing Jimmy Kram in action again as soon as possible. Jimmy started as expected, taking control of the ring and landed superb combinations that hit the target every time. His opponent was taking a pounding and the referee had to step in for 3 standing counts. Jmmy’s corner were shouting instructions and Jimmy continued for the rest of the round to land shot after shot on his opponent. Is this possible to achieve at the same time? Is resistance exercise and / or cardiovascular exercise the key? (Steve, 28, Nottingham) A: Absolutely Steve, you can grow muscle without the fat, the secrets are: 1. Intensity - keep the intensity high throughout the workout. 2. Don’t spend time on the cardio machines, instead use compound exercises and superset as much as possible. This will work your cardio system just as hard, in fact it will burn more fat, whilst giving resistance training to build muscle. 3. Don’t do more than 10 reps on any exercise instead increase the weight. 4. Don’t do less than 4 reps otherwise you will move into strength building, which is great but if you want quick gains of size stay in the 4 - 10 range. 5. Number of sets aim for 3 -4 sets of each compound exercise and do 3 exercises per muscle group. 6. Nutrition eat lots of protein, complex carbs and some fat....stay away from processed foods, and “bad fats”. Don’t be afraid to eat before bed I find a protein shake or cottage cheese or chicken sandwich works well, think of keeping your body fed with quality food and eat it regularly. MS. NRGFUEL SAYS... By gaining muscle mass, you will automatically reduce your fat so the simple answer to your question is yes. The best way to increase and improve the size and condition of your muscles is through weight (resistance) training. If you are not familiar with weight training, it is best to seek the help of a trainer to begin with to ensure correct technique and maximum benefits. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories your body will burn to maintain that muscle mass and the great news is.....it does it while you are resting ! PROVIDING of course, you have just done a workout ! So you can lie on the couch after a training session in the gym and feel smug in the knowledge that your body is consuming vast quantities of calories even as you lie there.... but lay off the high sugar snacks !
