There were tears and smiles as Nadine Farnsworth and Clifton’s Lisa Potter were among 54 women and girls who tackled their first-ever scuba dive or snorkel at the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) event. Lisa, 40, and Nadine, 26, have previously supported each other as they fought cancer and hair loss, as well as the physical and emotional pain caused by the terrible disease. They emerged from the pool thrilled they had conquered their fears to complete the try dive. Accountant Lisa has previously suffered a collapsed lung because of her incurable non-Hodgkins Lymphona. She had always wanted to scuba dive and says that after giving the sport a try, she will now book a full course, along with her 21-year-old son, Jacob. Lisa told The Local News: “The try-dive was fantastic, really good. “Once you get over the shock of being underwater - breathing through a regulator and having a mask and all the other gear on - it’s really brilliant. “I really want to try diving in the sea now. I’ve already asked about booking a course that I can do together with my son, Jacob.” “I’m so proud of Nadine. Her fear of masks made it real torture for her and I wasn’t sure she could do it but she did, even if we had a lot of tears. “It really has been a fantastic experience and the fact it was women only made a big difference. It meant you didn’t have to be body conscious or embarrassed. Anyway, if a ‘fit’ guy had been there I might not have been able to concentrate.” The manufacturer of our sofas recommended A&G Chem-Dry. A special ceremony took place on Remembrance Day and one of the network’s new trams was named ‘Local Armed Forces Heroes’. The tram is in tribute to servicemen and women who gave their lives in the two World Wars and more recent conflicts. It will have particular significance for many Clifton residents, including the family and friends of Lance Corporal Kieron Hill, who lost his life in Afghanistan in 2009. Lt Col David Dawber, who is based at Chetwynd Barracks, Chilwell, together with serving sailors from HMS Sherwood, soldiers from the Mercian Regiment and 170 (Infrastructure Support) Group Royal Engineers and RAF personnel, were amongst those attending the short unveiling. NET’s head of operations, Mike Mabey – one of a number of former servicemen and women who now work on the tram network – said: “When the public were asked to nominate names for our fleet of new trams, we received numerous suggestions on behalf of local people who had lost their lives in recent conflicts. "The names of Great War heroes, including Captain Albert Ball VC, were also suggested. The city has a rich heritage when it comes to military service, so we felt that it would be fitting to honour all our local armed services heroes by naming this tram.” The name was unveiled by Nottingham’s Lord Mayor, Jackie Morris and she said: “I’m proud that our local armed forces are being recognised by having a tram named after them, particularly on a day when we reflect and remember those who have sacrificed so much to keep our country safe. The names of many worthy local servicemen and women were put forward. Ten pupils aged 15 and 16, from the Farnborough Academy, beat off competition from schools across the Midlands to win the regional final of the LionHeart Challenge – a nationwide competition to find talented young entrepreneurs. They will now represent the Midlands in the national finals. The competition involved teams of school pupils from across the region taking part in a tough Apprentice-style business challenge designed to develop and test their enterprise skills to the full. Their challenge was to come up with a social action project that would deliver a ground breaking impact for a chosen citizen group within their local community. Deputy head, Clare Watson, who accompanied the students to the challenge event in Bolton, said: “After a three-and-a-half-hour journey to get there our students came up with a brilliant idea, called ‘immigration initialisation’. It’s a card that would allow adults in our community to access education services so they can get the basic education they need for employment.” During the action-packed task the pupils had to demonstrate a wide range of business capabilities including teamwork, presentation, marketing, budgeting and cost projection. They were then judged by a panel of industry experts ranging from the police force, finance experts, citizen advice and local community workers. Mrs Watson said: “It’s an amazing achievement for our pupils. Teams from some of the top schools in the country entered the competition, but our pupils really shone. “The head judge told them ‘if there was a way to win Lionheart…that’s the way to do it’ and said they’d impressed the panel with the way they’d excelled in every area of the task. We are immensely proud of them.” Team leader, Kyra Bowen, aged 15, said: “We worked amazingly as a team, everyone pulled together, worked hard and provided extraordinary results. This is a day I will never forget.” Fifteen-year-old Lewis Vaughn Jones added: “We were up against schools that had been at the regional finals every year, so it was great to go and win.” A total of 400 young people from schools across England entered the national competition. The Farnborough Academy team will now represent the Midlands region at the grand final at Edge Hill University and will battle it out against nine other teams to prove they are the best young business brains in the country. Designer Paul Smith and literary greats DH Lawrence, Lord Byron and Alan Sillitoe all feature in Soniya Ahmed’s painting, as well as Albert Ball, the First World War flying ace. Soniya, 18, is studying a BTEC Extended Diploma in Art & Design at Central’s Clifton Centre. Her painting was commended in the visual arts category of the Young Creative Awards earlier this year. That is when her impressive painting was spotted by the council. The theme of the awards was ‘Made in Nottingham’ and Soniya found plenty of inspiration while researching the great influencers of Nottingham, both past and present. Soniya said: “I entered the awards as part of a college project and wanted to use some famous subjects, but also bring back to life those that maybe not everyone knows about. “My previous college bought a piece of my artwork, but this is the first time that I’ve sold a piece of my artwork outside of college, so I’m really excited. It feels like I’m getting closer to my dream of becoming a famous artist. “Central College has helped me because I started late in the first term and they helped me catch up. They also let you know about competitions and projects to help promote your work.” Nigel Cooke, from the Young Creative Awards, said: “We were impressed by the sheer scale of the painting, and the way Soniya brought the characters to life in such detail. “I think it is a fitting addition to the committee room at Loxley House as the subjects of the painting are some of the great influencers of Nottingham’s rich history.” Soniya is originally from Kurdistan and lives with her mum, dad, brother and sister in Nottingham. She’s now working on an even larger painting, which evokes the global politics of the modern world and the White House in Washington. The work will feature portraits of 10 presidents, including Iraq, Russia, Syria, and Pakistan. The event was hosted by acclaimed Sotheby’s auctioneer Tim Wonnacott and raised a whopping £1,087,900 for The Grand Appeal and Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Charity. Local artist Julie Vernon was selected from more than 2,000 artist applications to create a Shaun for the Shaun in the City event. Her design ‘Dolly’ was inspired by the texture and volume of Shaun’s fleece, as well as his colourful character. The fleece was covered in 16,500 glass droplets, which resembled smarties and the face and legs in thousands of classic black mosaic tiles with a pop of vibrant orange. “I wanted to give the impression that Shaun was covered in lots of sweeties and create a fun and bold design,” said Julie. “Working in mosaic really brought the texture of the fleece to life and it was lovely to see it sparkling in the outdoors. “I feel really proud to have been part of such a great event and that my sculpture has raised £8,500 towards this fantastic charity.” Do you want to use your conservatory ALL YEAR ROUND? Nottingham City Council have announced they will turn Laura Chambers Lodge care home in Clifton into a centre for adults with special needs and disabilities. “Currently there are less than five beds available on any given day, so this new centre will help plug that gap and offer more people the care they deserve. It means that the facility will be lost to its current users, with the previous provision being for people living with dementia and elderly and frail people. “The fact is if we were properly funded by central government, we’d be looking to develop something new. Instead, because of enormous budget cuts, we’re forced into what is a really difficult decision. The decision was made following a public consultation and residents and their families have been informed. Before the decision was taken, the council consulted with residents, carers, the wider public, care home workers and unions. The consultation was recently extended by two weeks to ensure everyone had a chance to give their views. After all opinions were considered, it has been decided that the council will go forward with the original proposal and create more provision for adults with special needs in the city. “But the fact is we need more residential care for people with learning disabilities. “We believe that for older people in Clifton we are able to meet their needs in their community, but simply aren’t adequately able to do that for adults with learning disabilities.” Around 30 adults with learning disabilities will use the centre for long-term care, including six adults with complex needs. It is also expected that a further 50 to 75 adults with learning disabilities will use the centre’s new short break facility each year. The new centre will open in 2017. Prograss will come and undertake a free, no-obligation on-site lawn survey and make sure that 2016 will be the year that the lawn improves to make a huge difference to the chosen garden. Prograss packages consist of four or five seasonal treatments and can include mechanical work such as aeration and scarification. For great value advertising email ads@nottinghamlocalnews.com Prices start from as little as £15 per treatment and improvements can usually be seen within two weeks. MERRY PROGRASS AND A HAPPY NEW LAWN Prograss are your local, independent, lawncare company and they use only the highest quality child and pet-friendly products, so they really are worth getting in touch with. Tony , Duncan, Shaun, Andrew and Rachael from the Prograss team would like to wish all the readers of the Nottingham Local News a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Mechanical work is carried out by the best, commercial machinery available and by qualified operators. This ensures that these difficult jobs are done to the highest standards. They would especially like to give a big thank you to the readers that have decided to give Prograss the chance to show the difference they can make to their lawns. To book your free, no-obligation appointment please call Prograss on 01949 837367 or visit their website at pro-grass.com. The lawn is the centrepiece of most gardens and if it is green, healthy and weed-free, then the rest of the garden will always look better. Winter is the time that the patio doors usually close and the garden becomes a little bit neglected until the spring, but you may not realise that this is the time that your lawn is most under threat. Disease and moss are rampant in cold, damp conditions and your lawn may look very different if it is left unprotected from the elements. Prograss will be happy to do a free no-obligation health check now to make sure that when spring comes, your lawn is in good shape to take forward rather than having to repair any damage done from the predicted harsh winter. Treatments start at just £15. If you would like to make 2016 the year that you give Prograss - your local, independent, lawncare specialists - a go, then please give us a call on 01949 837367 or send an email to us at info@pro-grass.com. Alternatively, you can visit our website by logging onto pro-grass.com. Email us your good news stories editor@nottinghamlocalnews.com TIMBER DECKING A well constructed deck can transform an outdoor space and is one of the easiest ways of creating the ‘outside inside’ theme. Decks are pleasant underfoot, make safe play surfaces and can give a contemporary look. They can be built to create a seamless link with the internal house floors much more easily than paved surfaces, with an associated cost saving Man-made decking is available, but wood is still the material of choice. It looks great and can be easy to maintain and restore. The key to having a successful deck is ensuring it is the right material choice for that location in the first place. If the intention is to build in a shaded, damp environment, the chances of the deck being a slip hazard are high. 19 @ In situations like this, alternative surfaces should be looked at. An area that is light and airy is the most successful location for decking. It is a common myth that grooved decking is more slip resistant. Decks become slippery from the build-up of algae and this is generally more difficult to control on grooved decks where cleaning and maintenance are more difficult Sealing the wood after the deck is built can reduce the amount of moisture the deck wood can absorb and as a result will make the deck less slippery. A good sealant will also reduce the expansion and contraction of the wood that can increase the risk of the wood splitting. It should also limit the amount of UV degradation which damages the wood. Choosing the right type of decking is important. There is a large range of soft and hard woods available. It is not true that a hard wood deck will last longer than a softwood one. Softwoods are usually treated at source with antirot chemicals and it is the treatment not the wood that determines its longevity. We have just finished installing a Southern Yellow Pine deck over a large pond. It is my preferred choice as the grain is lovely and even standing in water the anti-rot guarantees are 25 years. We have been building high quality gardens locally for 25 years. To see examples of our work you can view the website at duncanrossgardens.co.uk. You can also contact us by calling 0115 933 6463, or send an email to inspire@duncanrossgardens.co.uk. Gareth Clarke, head of PE at the school, said: “I am thrilled to say that our eighth annual sports awards evening was yet again a real success. “Attended by over 200 of the school’s stakeholders - including students, parents, staff, governors and local business associates - it was wonderful to come together to celebrate our sporting successes from last year at local, regional and national levels. “It is not just about winning medals, though some of the students here tonight are showing that potential. It also builds confidence and persistence.” Guest speaker on the night was Tim Stevenson of ‘oneathlete’, which works to give disabled athletes “access to an integrated sports performance team”. Tim has worked with many household names, including Richard Whitehead, Charlotte Henshaw and Ollie Hynd and in his speech talked about overcoming obstacles to achieve your goals. He said: “This ceremony has been fantastic and there wasn’t anything like this at my school when I was growing up. "To see the achievements of the students, their effort and their hard work being recognised is Made Your Will Yet? One family proved that talent can run in families as Natasha Hudson and her sister Olivia were recognised for numerous awards. Natasha was particularly pleased to be awarded the Sports Personality of the Year award and said: “Both my parents and Nan are here tonight with my sister. I am really happy with my awards; it means that all of my hard work has been worth it.” When asked for her family’s reaction, Natasha said they were happy for her and added: “But my Nan is always proud!” OVEN CLEANING Your Will in the Privacy and Comfort of your Own Home £49.95 really important because it helps to shape and develop character. “As participants and as young leaders, our students continue to demonstrate many qualities which make them a real credit to themselves, their parents and The Nottingham Emmanuel School.” IT’S A DIRTY JOB!
