Cádiz is sunshine, blue, wind, orange, sea, salt, … The city
of Cádiz is little more than a town, but no less rich for
all that in culture, customs, history, gourmet delights
and majestic corners recalling its golden age, back in
the 19th century, when it was the birthplace to Spain’s
first Constitution in 1812.
But Cádiz is also happiness. That is why our guide to
show us around is Manuel Cornejo Aragón, a “maestro de chirigotas” or leader of one of Cadiz’s most
renowned Carnival troupes. Although even before we
meet up with him, just as soon as we leave the port,
we start seeing the rich buildings of the town’s traders and the Members of Parliament who drafted the
constitution known familiarly as “La Pepa”, many of
which have been restored for the delight of local inhabitants and visitors.

Cádiz es sol, azul, viento, naranja, mar, sal… Cádiz es casi
un pueblo, pero no por ello menos rico en cultura, costumbres, Historia, gastronomía y en rincones majestuosos que recuerdan tiempos dorados, allá por el siglo XIX,
cuando en ella se redactó la Constitución de 1812.
Pero Cádiz también es alegría. Por eso, nuestro guía para
recorrerla es Manuel Cornejo Aragón, maestro de chirigotas en el afamado Carnaval gaditano. Aunque antes
de salir a su encuentro y desde el mismo momento de
dejar el puerto aparecen ante la vista aquellos edificios
señoriales de los comerciantes y diputados de cuando
la redacción de La Pepa, que han sido restaurados para
disfrute de locales y visitantes.

Next comes the square of Plaza de España,
with its Provincial Council building and
the monument to the Constitution, and if
our stroll takes us along the edge of the
bay then the walls of Saint Charles lead
us into the poplar grove of Alameda Apodaca, where we can find the fortification
called “Baluarte de la Candelaria”. Now it is
time to turn off into the sheltered Plaza del
Mentidero, one of the many squares where
“stages are put up for the different Carnival
groups to show off their skills in public”, explains Cornejo. In fact, this is also the home
to the “Juan Cojones” club, so-called in
honour of the chirigota troupe with which
our host triumphed years ago in the nearby
Teatro Falla, the theatre in which the competitions are held each year to choose the
best Carnival groups.

Surgen a continuación la Plaza de España, el
edificio de la Diputación y su monumento
a la Constitución, y si la caminata bordea
la bahía por las murallas de San Carlos se
llega a la Alameda Apodaca, donde se erige
el Baluarte de la Candelaria.
Es el momento de desviarse hasta la resguardada Plaza del Mentidero, una de las
muchas donde “ponen un tablao para que
las agrupaciones carnavalescas muestren
al público su arte”, cuenta Cornejo. De hecho, allí mismo se sitúa la peña de los Juan
Cojones, llamada así en honor a la chirigota
con la que nuestro anfitrión triunfó hace
años en el vecino Teatro Falla, escenario
donde se celebra cada año el concurso de
agrupaciones.
Pero el mar en Cádiz atrae y hacia él volvemos a través del ilustre Parque Genovés.

hasta la de Mina. Allá, cuenta, se congrega
la marabunta el sábado de Carnaval. Pero
a juicio del ganador del Primer Premio de
Chirigotas de 2012, “los de aquí ya no nos
acercamos. El día se ha convertido en un
macrobotellón. Nos arrancaban las pelucas
y los disfraces, y no escuchaban nada; así
que desistimos”.
Tal vez por ese motivo, el maestro prefiere
obviar la plaza de San Francisco y su bullicio para retomar por la elegante calle Ancha
hasta toparnos con la Torre Tavira, la más
alta de la ciudad, incomparable incluso con
las Casas de las Cinco y de las Cuatro Torres,
donde los comerciantes vendían, vivían y
vigilaban los barcos que se aproximaban.

Here, he explains, is where the biggest
crowds gather on the Saturday evening in
the middle of Carnival. But, in the opinion
of the winner of the First Prize for Chirigotas in 2012, “we locals don’t come here
anymore. The event has turned into a huge
binge. They would pull off our wigs and costumes, and nobody was paying attention;
so we stopped performing here”.
Perhaps that explains why the “maestro”
prefers to avoid the Plaza de San Francisco
and its bustle to take us along the elegant
Calle Ancha until we reach Torre Tavira, the
city‘s highest tower, incomparable even
with those of the “Casa de las Cinco Torres”
and “Casa de las Cuatro Torres”, where the

ideal route is to go on towards the Plaza
de la Catedral and weave more deeply into
the district called Pópulo, another of the
cradles of Cádiz’s Carnival, the home of fun
but also the heart of the city itself: behind
the temple there is an archaeological site
with the Bishop’s House and the Roman
Theatre, where it’s possible to imagine the
original settlement of Gades.
The last stages of our journey involve a
slight detour. First, to have a break and
something to eat at El Pelícano, the belvedere bar located inside the walls of “Puerta
Tierra”. Later, back inside the historic city
centre, it is worth exploring the Santa María
quarter, the cradle of flamenco music, and
walking along the crowded Calle Plocia to
the Plaza de San Juan de Dios, where the

el yacimiento arqueológico de la Casa del
Obispo, y el Teatro Romano, donde es posible imaginar la Gades original.
Las últimas etapas del recorrido llegan con
un rodeo. Primero, para escaparse a tomar
algo en El Pelícano, el bar-mirador que
hay dentro de la muralla de Puerta Tierra,

merece la pena callejear por el barrio de
Santa María, cuna del flamenco, y asomarse
por la concurrida calle Plocia a la plaza de

más romántica de las plazas gaditanas, con
su aristocrático café Royalty y su frondoso
jardín con naranjos. Y será casi imposible no
