impact report 2012 - Big Brothers Big Sisters
IMPACT REPORT 2012 ›› Nick & Derrick ›› Growing up in Philadelphia can be difficult, especially when you live in an environment ravaged by violence and poverty. Like so many Philadelphia youth, Little Brother Derrick faced these and many more challenges. Losing the two primary male figures in his life to street violence, it wouldn’t be surprising if Derrick fell victim to the overwhelming culture of despair plaguing his neighborhood known as “The Bottom.” Derrick’s life took a different path, however, in part thanks to Big Brother, Nick. Matched for more than four years, Nick and Derrick have spent a lot of time together, looking beyond Derrick’s neighborhood and current situation. Nick helped Derrick find better ways to deal with the bullies and peer pressure in his school and focused his energies on positive outlets, like running and higher education. Now a senior at Boys Latin of Philadelphia Charter School, Derrick will have a tough decision to make this fall, as several colleges have expressed interest in him, and one university has already offered him a full scholarship for cross country. OUR MOTIVATION ›› Dear Friends, For nearly a century, Big Brothers Big Sisters has worked with children facing an array of adversity and transformed their lives through the simple power of relationships. Through these intentional mentoring relationships, we have become many things. We are a crime fighting organization – our program reduces incidences of violence and delinquency among youth, which creates safer communities. We are an educational organization – children in our program are less likely to skip school and more likely to earn better grades and have higher educational aspirations. We are an arts and culture organization – each year we expose thousands of children, their mentors and families to the arts and humanities through an array of activities. We are an organization that levels the playing field for those facing an uphill battle – we focus on and support children living with multiple risk factors from poverty and violence to family incarceration and failing schools. And one that provides a respite for single parents – the overwhelming majority of our children live in single parent households and lack a second positive adult role model in their lives. While we are many things to many people, we remain at our core a mentoring organization and our work is fueled by the simple prospect that while all children have equal potential, they do not have equal opportunity. An army of volunteers provide the foundation for our work, but it is our donors who provide our lifeblood. We cannot create these life-changing relationships without a professional staff to recruit, screen, protect and support the children in our programs – all of which require financial resources. While this report is a testament to the impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring, it is also a celebration and recognition of the many individuals, foundations, corporations and businesses that make this impact possible. We hope you enjoy reading the stories about your impact, and we look forward to working together as we continue to support our region’s children and youth. Thank you, Mitchell Benson Board Chair, Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA IMPACT REPORT 2012 2 our IMPACT ›› Southeastern Pennsylvania is home to some of our nation’s best schools… and some of the worst. There are pockets of affluence bordered by abject poverty and some of the safest places to live are mere miles from some of the most dangerous. Far too many children only know what they see, and so they struggle to dream beyond their current circumstances. That’s where Big Brothers Big Sisters comes in. Last year, we created 1,020 new mentoring relationships and supported nearly 3,000 mentoring relationships in total. Add in the parents and guardians we worked with, the teachers, principals and guidance counselors, and you can quickly see the impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring goes far beyond the individual relationships we create; however, it is those individual relationships that are at the core of everything we do. Her dad has been in and out of jail, and her life. Circumstances that made for a difficult and challenging childhood and often saw Shaelyce struggling to belong and cope. Recognizing these challenges, Shaelyce’s mother signed her up for a Big Sister, hoping that another positive role model in her life could make the difference. Ten years later, Shaelyce and Debra are still together, and the once shy little girl is now a young woman on a mission. The impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring goes far beyond a single child or neighborhood. When children can see beyond their current circumstances, it can change the world. With support from their Big Brothers and Big Sisters, children like Shaelyce are overcoming numerous risk factors and succeeding: 88% Plan on finishing high school* 80% Plan on going to college* 95% Saw positive academic impact* * Youth Outcomes Survey, 2012 “Before big brothers Big sisters, I didn’t see myself being this intelligent. Zug, Jr. •Anonymous - 12 That’s where Dan came in. Together Dan and Gabe have attended sporting events, played Wii games, undertaken yard work, and, as Gabe happily remembers, played ping pong. “I’d never played before. First we were on the same team, but then I got better so we played against each other. I think I even won!” Gabe and Dan are both a bit shy, but after a few outings together, they opened up and have been building their relationship ever since. “Enrolling Gabe in this program gave him the opportunity to explore more of his personality,” Angela continues. “Even the best parents that try really hard—there is only so much you can do. Sometimes it takes a village, and we’re happy that Dan and Big Brothers Big Sisters are in our village.” IMPACT REPORT 2012 12 our REVENUE ›› Thanks to supporters like you, Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania raised $4,342,980 in net revenue. Below is a breakdown of that revenue by source: BBBSA Grants $261,018 Interest Income $21,745 Government $1,253,200 Special Events $732,455 2012 REVENUE By Source Individual Giving $460,042 Foundations $251,896 United Way $349,355 Corporations/EITC $1,013,269 “My son Paul’s Big Brother may not have saved his life, but he saved his character.” -Terri, Mother of Little Brother Paul thank you ›› Thank you to everyone who contributed to Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania in 2012. Your generosity made it possible for us to support 2,920 children in Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties in lifechanging, one-to-one mentoring relationships. Your investment will not only positively impact the lives of those children and their mentors, but our schools, communities and future workforce will be stronger as well. Thank you. You make what we do possible! IMPACT REPORT 2012 14 Iman & Omar ›› Sixth grader Iman is a lot like many of the children we serve in Southeastern PA. Living with a single mother who works days, nights and weekends to ensure her family has what it needs, Iman doesn’t have access to many positive male adult role models. As with so many of the kids in our program, that interaction is something Iman eagerly sought. “I wanted to be with someone because I was really lonely. I just wanted a guy to talk and play with.” That’s where Big Brother Omar came in. First matched when Omar was a medical student, Iman says they “bonded on the first day. We hit it right off!” While struggling in school, Iman enjoyed learning, and Omar helped him connect the dots between academics and success in life. “Usually when I’d do something, I would just give up if it wasn’t going my way,” Iman says. “Omar says you should never give up. Like, if I’m playing soccer and I’m losing, I should still play my hardest because I’ll make myself better in the end.” “Omar is such an inspiration for him,” exclaims Iman’s mother, Salima. After earning a 92 percent average in school, Iman’s self-confidence has blossomed. “It’s a phenomenal privilege to be a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters. On my part, it’s so comforting to know my child will be somewhere for four hours having a great time with someone who is making such a positive impact in his life. That’s worth its weight in gold.” Iman agrees, saying, “since I met Omar, I have gone places and seen things that I didn’t even know existed. I see Omar as my real big brother—I count him as family.” Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA | 123 S. Broad Street, Suite 2180 | Philadelphia, PA 19109 | 215.790.9200
