 HEART TO HEART 
Leading Boldly in Chaotic Times
Dr. Eugene B. Habecker
Too often, courageous leadership is presented as efforts that depict the leader as the "tough boss"
who takes actions that are often authoritarian or dictatorial (think "Chainsaw Al"). Additionally, Scripture is
filled with exhortations for all of us, leaders or not, to live lives of courage. We see this in illustrative
verses like Deuteronomy 31:6 and Joshua 1:6-9, Daniel 10:12, 1 Chronicles 22:13, Acts 23:11, and many
others. Paul talked about his need for courage in Philippians 1:20. Certainly any Christ-follower who
desires to walk in full obedience to what Christ calls us to be and do—to carry their cross—is called to live
courageously.
Organizational leaders who are Christ-followers are nowhere exempt from any of these far-reaching
biblical expectations. All of us are called to love courageously, to live courageously, to lead courageously,
to follow courageously, and to serve courageously—as his followers. But what does that look like,
especially the leading part, in an organizational context? Here are some of the qualities that I believe
characterize courageous leaders.
(1) Courageous leaders understand the need to balance stewarding the mission with nurturing
and caring for the people who help implement the mission. Courageous leaders keep both ends in
mind.
(2) Courageous leaders learn how to manage the gap between the strategic and the tactical,
and pursue the mission with the past, the present, and the future in mind. A courageous leader is
someone who understands that you just can't announce a vision and expect it to become reality. Rather,
courageous leaders work hard to ensure that management disciplines are put in place to deliver and
implement the vision..
(3) Courageous leaders embrace the complexity of risk and understand the reality of failure in
decision-making. Few organizations are blessed with revenue streams that keep on providing for
ongoing needs, no matter what. As a result, new initiatives need to be regularly considered, and older or
unproductive ones need to be ended or abandoned. Yet when it comes to program review, the reality is
that organizations tend to add more than they subtract. Courageous leaders champion outside-the-box
thinking and regularly pursue "blue ocean" alternatives, seeking the often hard-to-find opportunity and
counterintuitive solution.
(4) Courageous leaders practice vulnerable trust. That is, they encourage those they lead to
understand that silence on an emerging organizational problem is more harmful than is admitting failure,
inadequacy, or incompetence. Courageous leaders trust people enough as to encourage them to share
openly and upwardly about discouraging internal issues or failed systems. By building trusting
relationships, courageous leaders encourage staff to practice this kind of vulnerable trust.
(5) Courageous leaders, particularly in the difficult moments, work hard to "absorb the chaos,
give back calm, and provide hope." By almost any standard, these are clearly chaotic times. In the
midst of that chaos, people sometimes say the wrong things, sometimes pursue misguided agendas, and
sometimes tend to be more brutal with people than with facts. These are times for courageous leaders to
absorb that chaos, not by relying on their own strength, of course, but by relying on the strength and
direction that comes from having learned the internal lesson, "My yoke is easy and my burden is light."
Any Christ-follower who desires to walk in full obedience to what Christ calls us to be and do—to carry
their cross—is called to live courageously. Courageous leaders give back calm.
Now perhaps more than ever, we need courageous leaders who are able to help themselves and
others through their leading and following, and especially through the guidance of God's Spirit,
to recognize that (1) degree of difficulty is not the same as degree of impossibility, and (2) opportunity
often resides where chaos and problems seek to be the sole tenants.
My prayer is that during these days of opportunity, yes opportunity, we will be empowered by the God
"who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power …"—to be
courageous followers and leaders in our walk with God, in our relationships with our families, and in the
places of organizational leadership where he has called us to serve.

LITANY FOR THE DEDICATION OF LEADERSHIP
(based on Romans 12)
Pastor:
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present
yourselves as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual
worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of
your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and
acceptable through your leadership at Holman UMC.
Leaders:
By the grace of God given to me I will serve and lead by not thinking of myself more
highly than I ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, according to the
measure of faith that God has assigned me. For as in one body we have many
members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many,
are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.
Congregation:
We all have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy,
in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter,
in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate,
in cheerfulness. We commit to develop and deploy our gifts to compliment that
of our elected leaders as a manifestation of our membership and discipleship.
ALL:
We commit to grow our love to be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what
is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in
showing honor. We commit to not lag in zeal, but to be ardent in spirit,
serve the Lord. Together we will rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering,
persevere in prayer, contribute to the needs of the saints, and extend
hospitality to strangers.
Pastor:
Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those
who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not
be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are.
Leaders and Congregation:
We will not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the
sight of all. Through our “followship” of Jesus Christ, we will live peaceably
with all. We will never avenge ourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God;
for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” No, “if your
enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to
drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.”
Pastor:
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
Leaders:
We will lead by example and to the glory of God. We commit to grow in our
discipleship and stewardship, glow in our companionship and partnership, and
go forth to make the mission and vision of Holman UMC a reality.

preparing for our West District Training to be held at Holman on
FEBRUARY 8th. All ministries and organization leaders and

stored in a proper and orderly fashion. The trustees will work with
the church office and custodial staff on this matter. We ask your
assistance to insure that needed items are not discarded because
they have been left without labeling, or just found thrown about
in corners. Thank you for your collaboration and cooperation
in this effort.
JUBILANT VOICES – We rehearse Wednesdays, 7:30 pm –
9 pm, and minister on 3rd & 4th Sundays. Our mission is to sing
praises unto the Lord. Stop by and visit us – this may be your
place of ministry!!
LITURGISTS AND LAY SPEAKERS: A Mandatory meeting has
been scheduled for all Liturgists and Lay Speakers for Saturday,
FEBRUARY 1st, 9-10:30 am. The purpose of this meeting is to
review responsibilities, update skills, and set a schedule for

GOLDEN BELLS – In February 2014, Holman will be celebrating
its 69th year. As part of our annual celebration to be
held FEBRUARY 9th, we will once again recognize our Golden
Bells, those who have been members for fifty (50) years or
more. If you joined Holman in 1964 or before and have not been
recognized, please contact the church office or see

TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE – The Holman
Adult Bible Studies Class invites you to join
them on FEBRUARY 16, 2014, as part of
our Black History Month observance, for a
discussion on the book, "Twelve Years
A Slave" by Solomon Northup, and the
movie based on the book. We will gather
between services (9:45 am – 10:45 am) in
L.L. White Hall. Save the date and make
plans now to be with us as we reflect on the
life and experience of Solomon Northrup.
BAKE SALE by Holman United Methodist Women will be held

We got a suspension on the oil well construction thanks
to City Council President Herb Wesson. But this is only
temporary and we've got to get ready for ROUND 2.

Brief Description of Ministry / Committee / Board
(Purpose / Expectations/ Responsibilities)
The Committee on Lay Leadership Development is a team that works with the Senior Pastor in
serving throughout the year to guide the congregation on matters regarding expectations,
qualifications and development of lay leadership (other than employed staff) in the congregation
to:
 Engage in growth and development as disciples of Jesus Christ
 Focus on accomplishing the mission and vision of the congregation
 Guide the development and training of Christian spiritual leaders
 Identify, recruit, train, and deploy persons in their elected roles
 Support, monitor, appreciate, evaluate and celebrate, persons elected in their roles
 Assist the Pastor and Church Council (or alternative structure) in assessing changing
leadership needs.
Expectations for Leadership @ Holman












Active member for at least 3 years
Commitment to the mission / vision of the United Methodist Church & Holman UMC
Consistent participant in at least one of the various worship services at Holman
Consistent participant in at least one of the various faith formation experience
(e.g. Disciple Bible Study, Small Group, other Bible Studies)
Consistent financial contributor through Tithes, Offerings and other means
Attendance & active participation in all meetings
When missing three consecutive and/or 50% of meetings, the person will be
asked to resign
Attendance & participation in all leadership training opportunities
