It was registered on 4 June, 1983 under the Societies Registration Act of 1860. AMDA was formed as a focus point for exchange of ideas on urban planning and development at the national level. Consequent to the historic 74th Constitution Amendment Act, 1992, which devolved additional powers to urban local bodies, AMDA was restructured as "Association of Urban Management and Development Authorities" (AMDA) on 7 March, 2005 to address issues pertaining to interface between state, municipal bodies and urban development authorities and to promote good urban governance. The title of the Association has again been changed with effect from 17 November, 2006 as "Association of Municipalities and Development Authorities" keeping the acronym 'AMDA' as it is, with a view to providing rationalization of inter-institutional relationships and better coordination between municipalities and development authorities. AMDA has a pool of experts in the fields of Urban Planning, Development Policies, Development Control Regulations (DCR), Capacity Building, Municipal Finance and Urban Governance, GIS, Monitoring and Evaluation of Urban Development Programs and Schemes and other related fields. The spatial implications of present and future urbanization, rural-urban interaction in District Planning Committees/Metropolitan Planning Committees and participatory urban governance are of special interest to AMDA. Capacity Building Research & Studies To conduct participatory training programmes for professional development in different functional areas through workshops, seminars Information Advocacy and short in-house training programmes. Exchange & Dissomination Advocacy To organize workshops, seminars, conferences and brainstorming sessions Areas of Activities for reforms and advocacy in the sphere of urban good governance.
