Self is the culprit; no one can really enjoy God until he gets to the bottom of self. THE JOURNEY THE WELL Grace forgave Jacob and confirmed to him the promises. We will find in this scenario that even though Jacob has had a great revelation from the Lord, still, spiritually speaking, he has yet a ways to go. “And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well’s mouth” (Gen. 29:2). Self is the culprit; no one can really enjoy God until he gets to the bottom of self. This journey, even as we shall see, was to last for some 20 years. In it, Jacob would learn much but would still need another revelation before the total change would come. More than anything else, these 20 years were to make him see the need for change. God will not really begin to reveal Himself until the end of the flesh is seen. If, therefore, I have not reached the end of my flesh in the deep and positive experience of my soul, it is morally impossible that I can have anything like a just apprehension of God’s character. Regrettably, it takes a long time to come to the end of self-will. This is what this journey is all about! We will find in the coming scenario that the problem of deception is still with Jacob, and an old sin is an easy sin! Jacob was now in Mesopotamia, about 450 miles from Beer-sheba. 4 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST As we shall see, it is obvious that this well could only be used at fixed times. A great stone covered its mouth, which probably required two or three men to remove it. From the way the scenario unfolds, more than likely, Laban, the father of Rachel, owned this well because immediately upon her arrival with the sheep, the stone was rolled away. Her sheep were watered first while the rest had to bide their time until her sheep were watered though they had been there long before her. Considering the value of wells of that particular time, this is probably the truth of the matter. Jacob comes upon this well and sees sheep and shepherds gathered by it. They are evidently waiting for the stone to be rolled away so their sheep can be watered. WATER “And there were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place” (Gen. 29:3). WE BELIEVE: »»The Bible is the inspired and only infallible and authoritative written Word of God. (Ps. 119; Mat. 4:4; Lk. 24:27) »»There is one God, eternally existent in three Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. (I Jn. 5:7) This verse plainly tells us how the sheep were watered at this particular well. As stated, it probably belonged to Laban and was only opened at certain times. Jacob is now coming to the end of his journey, but yet, spiritually speaking, it is a journey that will continue. To be brought to the place where the Lord desires that we be is not done quickly or easily. As it regards the child of God, every action plays a part in the sanctification process. Wells with their water always presented a place of refreshment, especially in a climate such as that in which Jacob now found himself. Thank God the Lord always has a well at the desired place. »»In the Deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His Virgin Birth, in His Sinless Life, in His Miracles, in His Vicarious and atoning Death, in His Bodily Resurrection, in His Ascension to the Right Hand of the Father, in His personal future return to this Earth in Power and Glory to rule a thousand years. (Rev. 20:5-6, 11-15) HARAN “And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, where do you live? And they said, Of Haran are we” (Gen. 29:4). In those days, signs were not on every corner giving directions. As well, one did not ask just anyone concerning distances or directions. Robbers were lying in wait for those who were lost or disoriented. So, when Jacob asked these shepherds where they were from, with their reply being, “Haran,” which was actually his destination, he knew he was close. This, no doubt, reminded him of God’s promise to guide him on his journey. For the Lord to be with one — to guide, to lead, to give direction, and to help in that which at first seems to be but small things, but which quickly leads to large things — is the greatest blessing that one could ever know. This which the Lord promised to do for Jacob, as wonderful as it was, is available to all believers, irrespective as to whom they might be. Paul quotes the Master when He said: “‘I will never leave you, nor forsake you.’ “So that we may boldly say, the Lord is my Helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me” (Heb. 13:5-6). However, such relationship is not automatic with the believer. The believer must actively want and desire such relationship and must ask the Lord to provide such. It is a prayer that the Lord will definitely answer. However, He will not push His way in but, most of the time, is waiting for the initiative to be taken by the believer. LABAN “And he said unto them, Do you know Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him” (Gen. 29:5). Laban, it is remembered, is Rebekah’s brother. He is the one who primarily dealt with Eliezer, the servant of Abraham, who had come to find a bride for Isaac, which took place approximately 80 to 90 years before (Gen., Chpt. 24). This would mean that Laban was over 100 years of age, which was not uncommon in those days. THE PRICELESS CORNER We have set aside this corner of The Evangelist to show God’s Plan of Salvation. If you are unsure where you will go when you die, please listen to what God has said in His Word: FIRST: GOD LOVES YOU! “For God so loved the world that he gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life” (Jn. 3:16). SECOND: MAN IS A SINNER, AND SIN HAS SEPARATED HIM FROM GOD “For there is not a just man upon Earth, that doeth good and sinneth not” (Eccl. 7:20). “For all have sinned and come short of the Glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). THIRD: JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY REMEDY FOR SIN “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God ...” (I Pet. 3:18). “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under Heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). FOURTH: YOU MUST RECEIVE JESUS CHRIST AS YOUR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOUR Jesus calls this experience the “new bir th.” He told Nicodemus: “... Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God” (Jn. 3:3). We invite you now to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour. “But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name” (Jn. 1:12). Pray this prayer and mean it with all of your heart: Dear Lord Jesus, I now realize that I am a sinner. I accept the fact that You died for me on the rugged Cross of Calvary. I now open my heart’s door and receive You as Saviour and Lord of my life. Please take full control of me and help me to be the kind of Christian You want me to be. Amen. If you prayed this prayer in all sincerity, you are now a Child of God. So that we might rejoice with you, we invite you to fill out this coupon and mail it to Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, P.O. NAME ADDRESS [CONTINUED ON PAGE 6] CITY STATE/PROVZIP DATE OF DECISION AGE [CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5] The language spoken then by the shepherds was probably Chaldean. Jacob, who spoke Hebrew, was evidently able to converse with them either because he had learned Chaldean from his mother or, as is more probable, because the dialects were not then greatly dissimilar. He called Laban the son of Nahor though he was actually the grandson. In both Hebrew and Aramaic, there is no separate word for grandson. “Son” means any descendant down the line. RACHEL “And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter comes with the sheep” (Gen. 29:6). THE SHEEP “And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water the sheep, and go and feed them. “And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep” (Gen. 28:21). Knowing that the shepherds have brought the sheep for water, Jacob wonders as to why they are not attending to the task but seemingly waiting. More than likely, as stated, the reason was that Laban owned the well, and the flocks could not be watered until Rachel had watered her flock. This is the first mention of Rachel in the Bible. She will figure very prominently in the great plan of God, being the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. She was the ancestress of three of the great tribes of Israel — Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh — the latter two being the sons of Joseph. She and her sister Leah were honored by later generations as those “who together built up the house of Israel” (Ruth 4:11). The evidence is that Laban was not so well-to-do financially. His daughter was serving as a shepherdess. She was evidently raised to do her part in the family and, thereby, was taught responsibility and industry. From such, the Lord drew the mothers of Israel. In all of this we see the hand of the Lord working, which is a pleasure to behold. Jacob, who must have a wife in order for the great plan of God to be brought forth, is led to this particular well even at the exact time that Rachel appears. What a mighty God we serve! RACHEL, THE SHEPHERDESS “And while he yet spoke with them, Rachel came with her father’s sheep: for she kept them” (Gen. 29:9). We readily see the hand of the Lord working in this situation regarding the meeting of Jacob with Rachel. I think the Holy Spirit immediately informed Jacob that this young lady was to be his wife. However, as we shall see, Jacob’s way was fraught with difficulty. At this point, Laban had no sons, although later, he would have. As the younger daughter, Rachel was assigned to the task of keeping the sheep, which she did. How old Rachel was at this time, we have no way of knowing; however, she was probably in her late teens. LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT “And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother’s brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother” (Gen. 29:10). RACHEL, JACOB, THE WELL, AND THE SHEEP Wells in those days were very valuable, especially in the places of hot, dry climates, which this was. So, a system for watering undoubtedly was worked out with the various different flocks in the area. The stone at the well’s mouth, which is so often mentioned here, was to secure the water; for water was scarce — it was not there for everyone’s use. Three times the Holy Spirit has Moses to repeat the term, “His mother’s brother.” It is not done unintentionally. The idea is, Jacob has met with his own relations, with “his bone and his flesh.” This is some proof that Laban owned this well in that Rachel waters her sheep first, or at least Jacob waters them for her. It is highly unlikely that Jacob would have acted here as he did had he not learned from Rachel, or possibly the waiting shepherds, that the well [CONTINUED ON PAGE 8] 6 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST FULL-POWER STATIONS Baton Rouge, LA............................. 88.5 (WJFM) Covering parts of Southern Louisiana Lake Village, AR/Greenville, MS......95.9 (KUUZ) Covering parts of Western Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas Bowling Green/Toledo, OH. . . . 730 AM (WJYM) Covering parts of Northern and Central Ohio, Eastern Indiana, and the Southern tip of Michigan Atlanta/Texarkana, TX. . . . . . . . . .100.1 (KNRB) Covering parts of Northeastern Texas, Northwestern Louisiana, Southwestern Arkansas, and Southeastern Oklahoma Winfield/Wichita, KS........................91.9 (KBDD) Covering South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma Crete, IL........................................... 88.1 (WBMF) Covering South Chicago and Chicago Heights Ottawa, IL...................................... 88.9 (WWGN) Covering Ottawa, West La Salle, East Joliet, and North DeKalb Kankakee, IL...................................88.3 (WAWF) Covering Northeastern Illinois and Northwestern Indiana Nashville, AR....................................96.9 (KSSW) Covering Southwestern Arkansas Graysville, TN................................... 95.7 (WAYB) Covering parts of Southern Tennessee and Northern Georgia Mobile/Citronelle, AL.....................102.1 (WQUA) Covering Mobile, Alabama Camden, AR..............................1450 AM (KNHD) Covering parts of Southern Arkansas Lafayette/Church Point, LA.............91.9 (KCKR) Covering Southern and Western Louisiana Grenada, MS....................................95.7 (WTGY) Covering parts of Northwestern Mississippi Ada, OK.............................................88.7 (KAJT) Covering South Central Oklahoma Bentonia/Yazoo City - Jackson, MS. . .92.1 (WJNS) Covering Central Mississippi and Eastern Louisiana Albion/Rochester, NY.................... 102.1 (WJCA) Covering North Western New York State Guthrie, OK................................1490 AM (KMFS) Covering Oklahoma City, Edmond, and parts of Central and Northern Oklahoma Jonesboro, LA.................................104.9 (KTOC) Covering Northern Louisiana Augusta/Little Rock, AR..................97.7 (KJSM) Covering Central Arkansas, Western Tennessee, a small part of Northwestern Mississippi, and a small part of Southern Missouri Desoto/St. Louis, MO...................... 100.1 (KDJR) Covering Southern Missouri, parts of Eastern Missouri, and Western Illinois Palm Springs, CA..............................90.9 (KPSH) Covering the Coachella Valley Norman/Oklahoma City, OK.............89.3 (KSSO) Covering Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Panama City, FL................................91.7 (WFFL) Covering Panama City, Florida Beatrice/Lincoln, NE....................... 88.9 (KNBE) Covering South Eastern Nebraska Grand Island/Hastings, NE...............90.7 (KNFA) Covering South Central Nebraska Lakewood/Jamestown, NY........88.9 (WYRR) Covering Lakewood and Jamestown, NY Corrigan/Lufkin, TX.........................99.3 (KYTM) Covering Corrigan and Lufkin, TX Bastrop, LA......................................88.3 (KJGM) Covering Bastrop, Monroe, and the Northeastern part of Louisiana TRANSLATOR STATIONS Dublin, GA................... 90.9 La Grange, GA............. 90.3 Waycross, GA.............. 90.7 Carlinville, IL............... 89.1 Effingham, IL............... 88.7 Freeport, IL.................. 91.3 Jacksonville, IL........... 88.1 DeRidder, LA............... 89.5 Grayson, LA................. 91.9 Many, LA..................... 91.3 Minden, LA.................. 91.1 Morgan City, LA.......... 91.5 Natchitoches, LA......... 90.1 Alexandria, MN........... 91.7 Morris, MN.................. 90.5 Kirksville, MO.............. 88.1 Mountain Grove, MO... 91.7 St. James, MO............. 89.3 Springfield, MO........... 91.5 Willow Springs, MO.... 90.5 Columbia, MS.............. 88.3 Morehead City, NC...... 91.9 Rockingham, NC......... 88.3 Corning, NY................. 89.5 Chambersburg, PA...... 89.7 Franklin, PA................ 90.3 Lock Haven, PA........... 89.3 Mansfield, PA.............. 91.5 Andrews, SC................ 88.7 Clinton, SC.................. 88.3 Manning, SC................ 88.7 Winnsboro, SC............ 91.9 Brookings, SD............. 89.7 Mitchell, SD................. 89.3 Watertown, SD............ 90.1 Yankton, SD................. 90.7 Pikeville, TN................ 91.3 Bonham, TX................. 91.1 Columbus, TX.............. 91.1 Midland, TX................. 91.7 Palestine, TX............... 90.7 THE EVANGELIST SEPTEMBER 2014 7 [CONTINUED FROM PAGE 6] belonged to Laban and that no sheep were to be watered until Rachel had first watered hers. The Scripture says, “When Jacob saw Rachel.” Every evidence is that it was love at first sight. RACHEL AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD “And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept” (Gen. 29:11). The patriarch is overcome with emotion, and I think mostly at the joy of seeing the hand of God working in his life. Truly, the Lord was with him. While he was very happy to have met his relatives, which means that his long journey was now over, I think the greatest joy of all was that of a spiritual note. As well, he may have known at that very moment, and informed by the Spirit of God that Rachel would be his wife. He, of course, would not have told her that then, but more than likely, the Spirit of the Lord definitely informed him of such, at least at some point. RELATIONS LABAN AND JACOB “And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things” (Gen. 29:13). Laban now did almost exactly what he had done those many years before when he was told by Rebekah of Eliezer. As he ran then to meet Abraham’s servant, he now runs to meet Jacob. The patriarch now relates to Laban all the things which had happened between him and Esau. No doubt, he especially gave all the information which Laban required about his mother Rebekah, who was Laban’s sister. Laban would have been well over 100 years of age at this time. THE BEGINNING “And Laban said to him, Surely you are my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month” (Gen. 29:14). “And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s brother, and that he was Rebekah’s son: and she ran and told her father” (Gen. 29:12). Jacob is now about to begin to reap the bitter fruit of his sin. At the outset, he is deceived exactly as he deceived his father, and was deeply wounded in the deepest affections of his heart. Jacob was actually the nephew of Laban. Terms of relationship were used in a very indefinite way among the Hebrews. It is a popular mistake to suppose that Jacob did not marry Rachel till the end of the seven years, or even the second seven years. Every evidence is, however, that he took her immediately for his wife, serving the term after the wedding. We will find that Jacob’s love for Rachel is one of the Bible’s outstanding examples of human love — seven years “seemed to him but a few days because of the love he had for her” (Gen. 29:20). After Jacob related everything to Laban, the uncle admitted that Jacob was indeed who he had said he was, for the simple reason that no one else would have had the knowledge of so many details. When she told her father Laban about Jacob, I JACOB wonder if he did not recall when his sister Rebekah, those many years before, had come to him when Eliezer had come on behalf of Abraham as it regarded a bride for Isaac? 8 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST Jacob abiding with Laban for the space of a month means that he lived with Laban for this particular period of time, and then went out and obtained his own place after that. WAGES “And Laban said unto Jacob, Because you are my brother, should you therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall your wages be?” (Gen. 29:15). Jacob, the dealer, meets now with Laban, the dealer, and they both are seen, as it were, straining every nerve to outwit each other. Evidently, during the month that Jacob spent in the house of Laban, he applied himself to serve his uncle even as he had begun when he watered his flock. So, Laban wanted to strike up a bargain with him that Jacob might be in his employ. Due to the manner in which Jacob had to leave his home, he was destitute of money of any nature and so was at the mercy of Laban to a great degree. THE BARGAIN “And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. “Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. “And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter. “And Laban said, It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. “And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had to her” (Gen. 29:16-20). Would the deception that Laban was now planning to carry out on Jacob have been carried out if, in fact, Jacob had not tried to practice deception on his father Isaac? I think not! The Scripture emphatically states that we reap what we sow (Gal. 6:7-8). Even though the passage in Galatians is speaking of sowing to the flesh or sowing to the Spirit, still, the principle is the same. SOWING TO THE FLESH In its most simplistic form, this refers to trying to live this Christian life by means other than faith in Christ and what Christ has done for us at the Cross. Even though believers were not referred to as Christians during Jacob’s time, the principle was the same. Jacob all too often was trying to follow the Lord by the means of self-will instead of trust in the Lord. The sacrifices of old represented Christ and His However, we have far less excuse today than did Jacob. The Cross through which everything comes to the believer from the Lord is now historical. In other words, it’s a fact. The Cross with Jacob was prophetic, meaning that it was yet in the future. Still, as we receive everything presently from the Lord by looking back to the Cross, in Old Testament times, everything was received from the Lord by looking forward to that coming time of the Cross. In fact, the sacrifices of old represented Christ and His Cross. Faith in those sacrifices per se would have done little good; however, faith in who and what they represented was the secret of all victory and power. Cross. Faith in Let’s say it another way: Any effort made other than faith in Christ and the Cross is sowing to the flesh, which means that such will never bring forth the desired result. of all victory those sacrifices per se would have done little good; however, faith in who and what they represented was the secret and power. SOWING TO THE SPIRIT Sowing to the Spirit refers to the Holy Spirit, and refers to placing our faith and confidence totally and completely in Christ and the Cross through which the Holy Spirit works (Rom. 8:1-11). Many Christians have the idea that sowing to the Spirit refers to doing spiritual things. It really doesn’t! While those things we do might be good, helpful, instructive, and informative; still, our walk with God is not so much in what we do, but rather what we believe (Jn. 3:16). As we look at Jacob, we might possibly think that we would never do such a thing as Jacob did as it regards the practicing of deception. While deception may not be our direction, to be sure, some other wrong is. In other words, we don’t come to the place of walking after the Spirit very quickly or very easily. As well, we can’t come there at all if someone doesn’t teach us the truth. THE EVANGELIST SEPTEMBER 2014 9 Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (Jn. 8:32). This message was taken from the Jimmy Swaggart hardback book, Jacob. While it’s not possible to eliminate the growing process in the hearts and lives of believers, we can save ourselves much grief if we are blessed enough to come under correct teaching. So, Jacob loved Rachel and agreed to serve Laban some seven years for her hand, so to speak. It would seem from these statements that Jacob served Laban for seven years before Rachel became his wife; however, the terminology employed rather refers to a contract or agreement. Jacob married both Leah and Rachel immediately, the first in which he was deceived into doing so, and the second by intention. Now he must serve 14 years, which he did. The mission is THE SAME. The message is THE CROSS. The audience is THE WORLD. That’s why this article my husband wrote is just as important today as it was in 1982 when he wrote it. I believe what the Lord gave to him will not only help you discern the spiritual dangers still associated with the hyper-faith movement, but also draw you closer to the author and finisher of our faith, the Lord Jesus Christ. OVER THE YEARS, I’VE HYPER-FAITH: NEW GNOSTICISM? part ii by jimmy swaggart I Tim. 6:20-21 – “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: Which some professing have erred concerning the faith.” Their basic difficulty with the Word of God is that they separate the Word from the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. THE WORD OF GOD One of the basic teachings of the hyperfaith movement is that all Scripture is not the same. In other words, some Scriptures pertain particularly to those who are still in the realm of the “senses” (flesh) — those who are sadly unenlightened. They would even go so far as to say that the Apostle Paul demonstrated great lack of enlightenment in many of his experiences. I Corinthians, Chapter 4, is considered an example of this. The same can be said of all of the apostles in the days of the early church. Some go even further by including the Lord Jesus Christ in this category. In other words, these teachers say that if the apostles of old (and even the Lord Jesus Christ) had the knowledge we possess today, they would not have been required to suffer many of the difficulties which they experienced. In practice, only certain Scriptures are used by the hyper-faith teachers to support their 12 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST contentions. Their basic difficulty with the Word of God is that they separate the Word from the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. In short, they have replaced God with their chosen Scriptures, rationalizing that this will justify their actions. The words of Scripture are deified — apart from the living God — and exalted into various “laws,” which bring the forces of good and evil into action. They call themselves “Word” people — constantly quoting particular Scriptures, thereby convincing the public that they are very scriptural and very spiritual — thus making their contentions completely trustworthy. In truth, they actually deny parts of the Bible as revelation that is not illuminated with a higher knowledge. In practice, although they call themselves “Word” people, they rely on only a few selected scriptural texts. They have very little respect for the Old Testament, seemingly suggesting that Old Testament personalities did not have the written Word (or at least very little of it), so consequently they did not “know” Visit my website at www.francesandfriends.com | Find us on Facebook HYPER-FAITH: NEW GNOSTICISM? PART II very much. As a result, you will only hear them use isolated texts from the Old Testament in their teaching. They seem to completely ignore the fact that the entire framework of New Testament context (thought) is derived from Old Testament revelation. (interpretation) of Scripture — all the while proclaiming themselves to be “Word” people. A great many of their teachers are teachers in name only. They have absorbed a little teaching on the subject of faith — and automatically consider themselves to be faith teachers. They endeavor to draw aside followers after themselves with their misguided efforts. Consequently, this causes much difficulty in the body of Christ. THE MASTER RACE (SUPERIORITY) There is an air of superiority about these teachers, their teaching, and their followers. They seem to place themselves in a position above everyone else. They are the “new creation people.” They have “the knowledge.” Sometime ago a preacher made the statement that individuals today worship the Bible apart from God, who inspired it. At first his statement puzzled me, but after some thought I understood what he was saying. Basically, he was suggesting that individuals (such as the hyper-faith people) were taking Scriptures (such as Mark 11:24 or St. John 15:7) and pulling them out of context to make them a type of magic talisman (good luck piece). In other words, he was saying that particular Scriptures are taken out of context completely and are used to deal with situations, even though they have almost nothing to do with the present difficulty of the individual. These Scriptures are quoted over and over again — with the individual using them as a sort of club to force God to line up with their reasoning. Also, they insist that Scripture that does not line up with their way of teaching is (simply) just not relevant to today. Again, we emphasize that they contend that if individuals (such as the Apostle Paul) had had our scriptural knowledge, they would not have had to suffer persecution and trials. Of course, this is absolutely opposed to the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Humility was the Master’s great hallmark. One of His last acts on earth was the washing of the disciples’ feet. Superiority and lack of humility are always of Satan. These never come from God. They reveal the worldling, the ego of man, believers in the so-called “master race.” E.W. Kenyon may have derived some of his teachings from the German philosphers. German theologians exerted great influence on a large part of the Christian world just prior to World War II. Some of these were also Gnostics. This was the time when Adolf Hitler was propagating his doctrine of the master race — even insisting that his efforts were of God, saying he was a servant of Jesus Christ. Of course, his demented philosophy resulted in World War II and the terrible “holocaust” — the slaughtering of some 6 million Jews. Some of these theologians found themselves comfortable with Adolf Hitler, considering themselves (through knowledge) to be superior, or “the master race.” Their teaching, sad to say, influenced quite a few of their contemporaries. Then they go on to say that we are more experienced in the Word today — and more “developed.” Consequently, we know more than the apostles of old. Some would even go so far as to include the Lord Jesus Christ among those who were “unenlightened.” The basic teachings of the hyper-faith movement incline followers to the view that they are members of a superior breed, or master race. They are told that they will continue to be members of this superior group — that is, unless they “slip” into using information from the “sense” world around them. What does this amount to? In essence, the hyper-faith teachers basically deify the Bible — setting it apart from the giver (the Lord Jesus Christ) of the Word of God. They use it in a way God never intended. Most are honest in their efforts and anxious to help people. In truth, though, most of them know very little about correct exegesis As a member of this superior mold (or master race) one is made to feel that he is entitled to all types of riches and rewards; hence, the “hundredfold” return gospel. These teachers do not seem to realize that to demand a hundredfold return from God on our investment is to again turn the temple of God into a den of thieves. Visit my website at www.francesandfriends.com | Find us on Facebook THE EVANGELIST SEPTEMBER 2014 13 HYPER-FAITH: NEW GNOSTICISM? PART II Basically, the so-called hundredfold return gospel — intertwined with a master race theory — has little or nothing to do with the love of God. It has little or nothing to do with a desire to promote God’s cause, or to give to Him simply because we love Him. At best it is an investment and a gamble. At worst, it is a deception perpetrated by Satan. At its core, it is little better than the Las Vegas practice of enticing people into gambling casinos with the selfish lure of “something for nothing.” They must drive the largest cars, live in the finest houses, wear the best clothing the best jewelry, and so forth. This is an image they have to maintain. These teachers constantly hold the thought before their followers that their faith (or knowledge) will deliver anything they desire. Consequently, they must drive the largest cars, live in the finest houses, wear the best clothing, the best jewelry, and so forth. This is an image they have to maintain. It is somehow supposed to demonstrate their faith. They are, in effect, role models for their followers. As a result of this practice, the followers tend to look to the Cadillac or the Lincoln (and other worldly trappings) as the mark of the individual’s (or teacher’s) faith. One of the principal teachers in the hyper-faith movement recently said that he was confessing a Mercedes Benz for himself and a mink coat for his wife. To hear this — considering the difficulties of the world and the millions who are lost — one has to wonder what it has to do with spreading the Gospel and the love of the Lord Jesus Christ abroad. GNOSTICISM—KNOWLEDGE As we have mentioned, the basic word “Gnosticism” actually means “knowledge.” Not surprisingly, knowledge is the alleged foundation of the hyper-faith movement. In some cases the word “knowledge” replaces “salvation.” They seem to infer that man is basically victorious through his knowledge rather than through Christ. It elevates him beyond his basic position as merely mortal. He, in essence, becomes co-divinity with his Creator. As mentioned previously, this satisfies two perverted needs in fallen mankind: 1. The need to be his own god, in control of all life. 2. The need to glorify himself beyond his proper place in creation. So the key to the hyper-faith movement is knowledge. You will hear this emphasized in much of 14 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST their teaching. Also as mentioned earlier, this is derived largely from the teachings of E.W. Kenyon. These teachers (not infrequently) use words like “dummies” or “idiots” to characterize those who do not believe in their particular way. This, of course, is a demonstration of one of man’s basic problems today — the problem of ego. Man wants to “play God.” In actuality, he wants to be God. This is (always was) Satan’s problem too, and he has inoculated mankind with his desire for God/ man equality. Satan tempted Jesus to misuse the knowledge and power of God when he suggested that Jesus create bread out of stones. Of course, the Lord gave Satan the correct reply, but this same desire — to misuse knowledge — is prevalent today. The hyper-faith people suggest that there was a basic lack of knowledge of the laws of healing and salvation until Paul’s time. Consequently, Old Testament saints (according to these teachers) underwent many unnecessary difficulties because of this lack of knowledge. Of course, this is absurd, but it is their excuse for any Scripture which conflicts with their misguided teaching. Actually, there is a tendency to emphasize knowledge rather than salvation. It is as though one becomes saved, but then becomes more saved as his knowledge increases. This parallels some of the thoughts of Gnosticism. It almost ignores the blood atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ. As previously stated, the hyper-faith people seem to believe that the Bible is a god unto itself, needing little or no Deity behind it. They seem to teach that the force of speaking the Word (and knowledge of it) becomes all that is necessary to bring about what has been spoken. They appear to have lost the realization that true Christian belief is that the will of the Father and the words of the Bible are in perfect conformity; that they take life in us as we move in the knowledge of God according to the leading of the Holy Spirit — not in the bondage of a written formula that was separated and apart from our living Saviour. When God’s written Word is apart from His person, a scriptural code of law is developed. As with any code of law, legalism must develop — and with it the Visit my website at www.francesandfriends.com | Find us on Facebook HYPER-FAITH: NEW GNOSTICISM? PART II resultant condemnation whenever the believer fails to keep one or several of the laws. If you will notice, faith teachers are often heard to say, “It was your faith that failed. God can never fail.” Consequently, the believer becomes the one following the law to its maximum, and taking the blame for any ensuing failure. The law, or “formula,” always works! The only possibility of failure lies in our faith — as revealed in our confession of the words or formulas. In view of all of this, they say we should lean on our knowledge, which will then control all circumstances surrounding us. These laws are impersonal and divorced from any relationship except that of their mechanical performance. By and large, this knowledge removes the control from God and His will to an exercise of our will, using the formula (or law). The line between God and man blurs, and man suddenly seems to become a law unto himself. Of course, this totally ignores the fact that Jesus, although He was the very Son of God, totally submitted Himself to the will of the Father. It would seem prudent for us to do at least as much. This “knowledge salvation” imposes a great burden on the believer. He mustn’t, under any circumstances, “lose his confession.” If he does, all the results of the forces put into motion with the confession will be lost. Kenyon himself said, “Action on the written Word of God brings God onto the scene.” It would seem, from this teaching, that God is automatically stirred into action by repetition of certain words of Scripture. Consequently, the believer acts solely upon the substance of his own faith world — guided by specific laws, confessions, and formulas. IN MAY, I HAD the great honor of ministering in the city of Fortaleza, Brazil. The church that invited me was called (in English) Assemblies of God Canaan, and is pastored by Jecer Goes. To my amazement, when I arrived, I found that the church had actual seating for 13,000 people. To say that I was overwhelmed would be an understatement. Unknown to most, Brazil is the most Pentecostal country in the world. It is estimated that 42.3 million people — 23 percent of the population of the country — call themselves Pentecostal. The message of Pentecost first came to Brazil in 1911 through two Swedish missionaries — Gunnar Vingrer and Daniel Berg. Though it was slow going at first in 1930, there was a Pentecostal explosion resulting in many miracles of divine healings, which led to rapid expansion of Pentecostal churches being established. In the 1980s, there was another great wave of growth across the nation as our telecast began to air across that land. Literally, multiple thousands of people were saved and filled with the Holy Spirit. Churches were built that would hold 5,000–10,000 individuals in order to handle the great influx of people. Many churches had to have service every single night of the week to handle all of the new people coming into the Pentecostal experience. We held two great crusades in Brazil during the 1980s — Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In both cities, the nightly attendance was well over 100,000 people with the largest being in São Paulo with more than 200,000 people in attendance. 16 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST Visit my website at www.donnieswaggart.org PENTECOST IN BRAZIL By his own admission, the pastor, Brother Goes, and the church in Fortaleza were greatly influenced by Jimmy Swaggart Ministries in the 1980s. single aisle was jammed with people trying to come forward. We know that well over 1,000 people were filled that night. During the May services, on Friday night there were well over 12,000 people in attendance. The Spirit of the Lord moved greatly with many responding for salvation. After the service, the pastors were so thrilled with what the Lord had done that night. On Saturday morning I spoke to more than 800 pastors. I was greatly moved by the number of pastors who told me how much our ministry had changed their lives. Saturday night was Holy Spirit night and, once again, there were well over 12,000 people there. That night I preached a message entitled, “The Altar, the Lamp, the Oil,” taken from Exodus, Chapter 27. As well, Brother Goes and his church will be distributing between 5,000 and 10,000 Portuguese Expositor’s Study Bibles to pastors across their state. This trip was one of the most rewarding trips I have ever made, and I look forward to returning next year. In closing, Pentecost is alive and well in Brazil, and it is an honor to play a part in this great move of God. The emphasis of the message was the oil that was needed for fuel so the golden lampstand could light the tabernacle. Of course, oil is a type of the Holy Spirit, respecting anointing and illumination. The Lord moved mightily that night. There were more than 100 pastors sitting on the platform. Several times during the service, as the Spirit of the Lord would move, they would stand to their feet praising the Lord. When I gave the altar call for people to be filled with the Holy Spirit, so many came forward that there was not enough room in the front to hold the people. UNSAVED HUSBAND TRAVELS 1,600 TOTAL MILES TO BRING WIFE TO EASTER CAMPMEETING DEAR BROTHER SWAGGART, I just wanted to say what a blessing it was to be at Easter Campmeeting. I love everything about SBN, and my husband does too. He is not saved, but took time off of work so he could bring me to Campmeeting. Please pray for him. I hope to make it back one day, as it is about 1,600 miles there and back. He took my Bible around so that you all could sign it. God bless you in all that you do, and your journey around the world preaching the Word! – Email DAUGHTER OF MEDIA CHURCH MEMBER SAVED WATCHING SBN PRAISE AND WORSHIP DEAR BROTHER SWAGGART, I am a Media Church member and I am so proud of my church — the preaching this week is beyond words. Thank you! I had dinner for my family today and had it a little early, so when they arrived, the worship service was on and my daughter said the sinner’s prayer and gave her heart to the Lord — PRAISE GOD. I love you all so much. God bless SBN. WOW! How this has ministered to me. I am watching everything I possibly can and now my spirit has been revived. During the Campmeeting on Thursday morning, the Spirit of God touched my heart and I had tears streaming down my face and it felt so good to feel God again! Thank you to your team and all the SBN ministry. – Email BELIEVER THANKFUL FOR SBN TEACHING ON THE TABERNACLE DEAR BROTHER SWAGGART, I just wanted to thank you for teaching on the tabernacle. It has blessed me so very much. I have your study Bible, and the first time I read about the tabernacle with all your notes, it helped and now that you are teaching on it, that really works for me because I am a slow learner. God has really done some awesome things in my life and opened my eyes due to SBN. I’ve been in a wheelchair for 31 years now, but Jesus Christ saved my life years ago. Without Him, I never would have made it through the last 31 years. You are always in my prayers. God bless you. – Email – Oregon SPIRIT OF GOD TOUCHES STAGE 4 CANCER PATIENT THROUGH SBN DEAR BROTHER SWAGGART, thank you so much for SBN. I am a stage 4 breast cancer survivor, and, after being in remission for four years, the cancer came back in my right lung which caused it to collapse, all the while I also had pneumonia. It is inoperable, so I did two months of radiation then started chemo. I have been living for God for 34 years, but through the past five months I have been numb. I stopped reading my Bible and praying. I was still believing in God, but not able to move forward. I have been shut in, not able to be around people and not able to go to church. Spiritually, I felt like I was dying. I came across your SBN a few months ago and 28 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST SON REALIZES GOD MAKES NO MISTAKES AND RETURNS HOME DEAR BROTHER SWAGGART, you all have done so much to change my son’s life through teaching what the Bible says on so many subjects in today’s crazy world! He wanted to be a woman, and I was heartbroken because I love him so much. I prayed day and night that God would open his eyes as to the nature of this sin. Finally, after two years, and after he started the medical process, he came to the full knowledge that he was so very wrong about life in general. I raised my children in a Christian home and he is truly as the prodigal son. He has come home! We watch SBN a lot, and every day I see him grow in his faith. He realizes now that God does not make mistakes, and that he was created to be male not female. Thank you for your steadfast love of Christ and getting the Message of the Cross out to so many lost people in this world. – Email POWER OF GOD FELT BY VIEWER IN UNITED KINGDOM DEAR BROTHER SWAGGART, I tuned in to live service today here in the U.K. and it was awesome as the presence of God filled the house. And when I took Communion, the power of God really came into my heart and I felt new and refreshed. Bless and praise God for the ministry. – United Kingdom INTERNET VIEWER THRILLED TO SEE SBN ALSO ON CABLE TV CHANNEL DEAR BROTHER SWAGGART, I was changing channels Friday, and there was your program, so I began watching. I have been watching on the computer, but I was thrilled to see it on TV. We have three TVs in our home, and I go from room to room watching. I am the same age as Donnie, and my parents have long been followers of your ministry. Sunday morning in church I leaned over to my Mom and told her that SonLife Network is now on cable channel 99. My Mom smiled and said, “I know, your Dad and I watched it all day Saturday and Saturday night.” Thank God for you and your ministry. – Virginia DISCOVERING SBN BLESSES FAMILY IN AFRICA DEAR BROTHER SWAGGART, I live in Malawi, Africa and have recently discovered SonLife Broadcasting Network (SBN). What a big blessing this is to me and my family. Keep up the good work, and God bless you all. – Malawi LIVING A CROSS-CENTERED LIFE part i by gabriel swaggart explain the excitement I have in writing this particular article. Anytime I have the opportunity to write, I seek the Lord as to what He would want me to write, and I felt led of the Lord to write on this all-encompassing subject: living a Cross-centered life. I personally believe, and I believe this according to Scripture, that if the believer does not understand the Cross of Christ relative to our everyday life and living, then we will never be able to enjoy this more abundant life that Christ paid for us to have and enjoy. By the same token, if believers do not properly understand Romans 6:3-5, then they cannot understand how to have victory over the problems in their lives. I CANNOT BEGIN TO When they put Him in the tomb, they put all of our sins into that tomb as well. 30 Rom. 6:3-5 – “Know you not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ (plainly says that this baptism in into Jesus Christ and not water [I Cor. 1:17; 12:13; Gal. 3:27; Eph. 4:5; Col. 2:11-13]) were baptized into His death? (When Christ died on the Cross, in the mind of God, we died with Him; in other words, He became our substitute, and our identification with Him in His death gives us all the benefits for which He died; the idea is that He did it all for us!) Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death (not only did we die with Him, but we were buried with Him as well, which means that all the sin and transgression of the past were buried; when they put Him in the tomb, they put all of our sins into that tomb as well): that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the Glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life (we died with Him, we were buried with Him, and His resurrection was our resurrection to a newness of life). For if we have been planted together (with Christ) in the likeness of His death SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST (Paul proclaims the Cross as the instrument through which all blessings come; consequently, the Cross must ever be the object of our faith, which gives the Holy Spirit latitude to work within our lives), we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection (we can have the likeness of His resurrection, i.e., live this resurrection life, only as long as we understand the likeness of His death, which refers to the Cross as the means by which all of this is done).” THE CROSS IS THE ANSWER FOR THE SINNER AND THE SAINT As Romans 6:1-2 explains to us, the problem that we encounter as Christians, which is the sin nature, Romans 6:3-5 gives us the solution to that problem, which is the Cross of Christ. Understand that Apostle Paul, in Romans, Chapter 5, explains that we are sinners because of the fall of Adam, who was our federal head, and because of his fall, we all have been cursed. In spite of that, we can all be declared righteous through our faith in Christ and what He Call us at 225.768.3072 | Email us at crossfire@jsm.org | www.crossfireyouthministry.org LIVING A CROSS-CENTERED LIFE PART I did for us at the Cross. In other words, for the sinner, the Holy Spirit through Paul brings us first to the Cross. In the sixth chapter of Romans, the Holy Spirit through Paul tells the church of that day — and for all time — that the problem we face on a daily basis is the sin nature, and how that the Cross of Christ is the answer to that problem, as well. To put it in simpler terms, the Holy Spirit takes us first to the Cross for salvation, and keeps us at the Cross for sanctification. We must never lose sight of that great truth. The Cross of Christ is the answer for the sinner, and the Cross of Christ is the answer for the saint. That is why I maintain that if the believer does not understand the Cross of Christ for sanctification, then that believer will never understand how to live for God. WATER BAPTISM When the Apostle Paul explains to us how we can live a victorious, Christian life, he first of all takes us to the Cross. “Know you not, that so many of us were baptized into Christ, were baptized into His death?” Now, I’m going to offend some of you reading this article, but as the saying goes, I want to appease God and not man—this verse has nothing to do with water baptism. Now, am I demeaning water baptism? Not in the slightest. In fact, I believe in water baptism, as I have been baptized in water, and encourage all believers to be water baptized. However, we must understand first and foremost that water baptism does not save anyone, but rather is an outward sign of what has already happened on the inside. I will even say this: you, as a believer, do not need to be water baptized in order to make it into Heaven. All you have to do is accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour to make it into Heaven. Paul would say in I Corinthians 1:17, “For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the Gospel.” Was Paul demeaning water baptism? Not at all. He was simply saying that the only means of salvation comes by the preaching of the Gospel under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, which leads a person to Christ. might have the power of his sinful nature broken and the divine nature implanted through his identification with Christ — His death, burial, and resurrection — thus altering the condition and relationship of that sinner with regard to his previous state and environment, bringing him into a new environment — the kingdom of God. God placed us into Christ when He died so that we might share His death and thus come into the benefits of that identification with Him, namely, separation from the evil nature as part of the salvation He gives us when we believe. We are placed in a new environment — Christ. The old one was the first Adam in whom, as our federal head, we were made sinners and came under condemnation. In our new environment — in Christ — we have righteousness and life, and our condition has changed from that of a sinner to that of a saint. The sin debt that has hung over our heads was completely paid for by the precious blood of Jesus Christ, which means that Satan has no more claim over the sinner, and it was all done by simple faith. It was all done at the Cross. Our salvation was not paid for by the works of the church, or by the rituals of a person, but rather by simple faith in the finished work of Christ on Calvary’s Cross. Æ This article will be continued in the next issue of The Evangelist. “For Christ sent me not to baptize but to preach the Gospel” ONE ENVIRONMENT TO ANOTHER The word baptized in the Greek here is baptisma, and, according to Kenneth Wuest, refers to a smith dipping a piece of hot iron into water, tempering it. It refers to the placing of a person in a new environment, or into union with something else, so as to alter its condition or its relationship to its previous environment or condition. It refers to the act of God introducing a believing sinner into vital union with Christ, in order that the believer PAUL PREACHING THE GOSPEL THE EVANGELIST SEPTEMBER 2014 31 THE WALK OF GRACE by loren larson Gal 2:20-21 - “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.” The believer begins his or her true Christian life by being born again. This is that moment in time when the Spirit of God unites the believer with Christ (1 Cor. 12:13). OUR WALK IN CHRIST SIMPLIFIED While some of Paul’s writings are difficult and lengthy passages that are hard to understand, others are so beautifully simple that they almost take our breath away. Our chosen text falls into this second category. These two verses show the believers their current position, the way they are to approach this Christian walk, and the way not to approach this Christian experience. As the New Testament believers struggled with grasping the details and applications of the new covenant, the man to whom God had unveiled the entire plan stood solid and sure. Oh, how we need these simple, yet poignant, truths of the Gospel to resonate deeply within our souls and spirits. In just a few short statements, Paul encased and displayed the Christian’s true walk of grace. THE CURRENT POSITION OF THE BELIEVER The believer begins his or her true Christian life by being born again. This is that moment in time when the Spirit of God unites the believer with Christ (1 Cor. 12:13). We are made one with Him, and all the benefits of regeneration become ours. Our sins are taken away, our names written down in the Lamb’s Book of Life, the power of sin’s grip upon our hearts is broken, and the Holy Spirit 32 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST moves inside to begin His office work. In the mind of God, it’s truth that we — at this present hour, being in Christ — sit with Him in heavenly places. Again, in the future, we shall rule and reign with Him. It must also be understood that, at the time of His death on Calvary, we were in Him. You see, God does not rehabilitate humanity; He eliminates us in Christ at Calvary. He then raises us up with Christ and grants to us the availability of the Holy Spirit, who alone can empower us to live this Christian life. We are new creations in Christ, yet we still live in this mortal coil. Therefore, the goal of the Christian life is to make the great exchange permanent. We are to trade our lives away in exchange for the very life of Christ to rise up within us. The goal of the Christian then is not to imitate Christ, but rather let the very life of Christ rise up within — guiding, working, loving, and filling our hearts with joy and peace. Since we have all this, how do we make it work? THE APPROACH TO DAILY CHRISTIANITY With the work of redemption sure, we now set out to please God and become all that He has planned and desired for us. We will live in this present form of flesh until the day of the Rapture when we will receive our glorified bodies. As for now, we live by faith. However, THE WALK OF GRACE we must have faith in what God’s Word tells us to have faith in. Faith that God will recognize as true faith must be found to rest in the person of His Son. That’s what Paul meant when he stated, “And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God.” Our focus is to be on the person of Christ. It’s all about Jesus! But Paul didn’t stop there. He went on to say that our faith must ever rest upon the greatest exhibition of love ever encountered by the human race. That is the love expressed by Jesus when He gave His life to grant us all the benefits of salvation and sanctification. I must ever keep who Jesus is and what He did for me as the object of my faith. In this way, and only in this way, am I assured that His life will continually rise up to change, protect, and guide me toward the will of the Father. My faith must rest in Christ and the Cross! HOW NOT TO APPROACH THE CHRISTIAN LIFE Paul plainly stated that we will frustrate this wonderful system — this process of grace — if we allow our faith to be moved from Christ and Him crucified. The term frustrate literally means “to be cut off from.” Simply stated, if we place our faith in what we do and not in what Jesus has done for us, the power of the Holy Spirit and the working of God’s grace in us can be slowed and even stopped. When the wrong object of faith cuts the believer off from the only true source of power by which this Christian life is to be lived, then all for which Jesus died is in vain. To assure that we continually receive the grace we need, we must ever look to Jesus and place our faith in Him through every circumstance. If you weary of this process, then look long and hard at the evidence of His love for you. His love realized becomes fuel for your faith. Release all faith in things other than the Cross. Even the good and correct Christian disciplines, which we are called upon to practice, can pull us from the right approach to daily living if we put our faith in the doing of said disciplines. Keep your eyes securely on what He has done, not in what you do, and you will come to experience the true walk of the Christian — the walk of grace! Why WEBC&S? ““Jimmy Swaggart Ministries and World Evangelism Bible College are very important to me because they have had an incredible impact on my family. Both my parents were saved as a result of Brother Swaggart’s preaching. My mother was also barren, but God healed her and gave her three biological children. A few years ago, God answered our prayers and provided for us to live in Baton Rouge and be a part of the work at this ministry. Near the end of my first semester of Bible college, I reflected on all the life-changing things I have learned. What I have experienced has left a positive impact on me that has increased my knowledge of the Word and how to apply it. If you truly want to learn more about the God who made a way of salvation for you, then come to WEBC and experience the Message of the Cross.” Lindsey Tevis louisiana ““As an audit student of WEBC, I have had the privilege of attending many of the classes where I had real experiences with God. I am glad God does not leave anybody out of what He is doing here. I have gained a better understanding of the Word of God, and of subjects such as the Message of the Cross, how to share the Gospel, and the baptism with the Holy Spirit. We have an excellent faculty, with ministers truly called by God, Spirit-filled, and Spirit-led. The college has played a vital role in helping me to seek and receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit. It has also provided a favorable environment in which I could receive precious encouraging words from the Lord in times of need. It has been also a blessing to see some of the young students growing in the Lord and developing their gifts over a period of time; it is a great inspiration to witness the touch of God in their lives.” Francisco Silva brazil P.O. Box 262550 | Baton Rouge, LA 70826-2550 225.768.3890 | info@webc.edu | www.webc.edu THE EVANGELIST SEPTEMBER 2014 33 THE LAND IS MINE part iii by john rosenstern Leviticus 25:23 - “The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me. And in all the land of your possession ye shall grant a redemption for the land.” Today, we look back to the Cross of Jesus Christ and what He accomplished there for us. This must ever be the object of our faith. OBEDIENCE TO THE FAITH TIME-TESTED FAITH THE KINGDOM OF GOD operates on faith. Every generation throughout the Bible was given a test of faith to believe God. “Faith” is an ambiguous statement though. Therefore, God gave to each generation an object on which to focus their faith. In other words, believing isn’t believing until it believes in something, more particularly, that which God gives us. The object of one’s faith determines what that individual believes and trusts in. For example, Abraham believed God pertaining to the promises of a child and an inheritance of land. Because he believed God, God accounted his faith for righteousness. Righteousness came by grace (God supplying the source of righteousness) through faith, but faith in God and what God promised him. Throughout each dispensation, God would reveal a little more light on His plan of redemption. Although this series is dealing with God’s land covenant promises, we must understand that the land promised to Abraham cannot be separated from God’s promise of justification by faith. Let me explain: God promised Abraham that from his seed, the nations of the earth would be blessed. Those who bless Abraham — and his seed — God would bless, and those who would curse Abraham — and his seed — would be cursed. From Abraham’s loins would come Isaac and Jacob, i.e., Israel, the seed to which the land was promised. Both the seed and the promise of the land are intrinsic. The seed must ever cooperate through faith by believing the light God has revealed in order to possess the promises of God. THE CROSS Today, we look back to the Cross of Jesus Christ and what He accomplished there for us. This must ever be the object of our faith. We must understand that by the Cross, Jesus paid the debt of sin we owed God, which was death. “The wages of sin is death” (Rom. 6:23). Because no sin was found in Jesus Christ, Satan had no legal claim against Him. “That through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the Devil” (Heb. 2:14). No grave could hold Christ down! His sinless, perfect death was proven by His resurrection. If one sin had not been atoned for, He could not have risen from the dead. The Resurrection is proof of His finished work on the Cross. His death, as stated above, is where our victory is, and where our faith must be placed. 34 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST Each generation would have to embrace God’s promises by faith, just like Abraham. In the case of Isaac, he would be constrained by the Lord to remain in Gerar — located in the land of the Philistines and better known today as the Gaza Strip — during a time of famine and was commanded not to travel into Egypt. God would tell him where to dwell and then would remind Isaac of the promise he gave to his father Abraham in Genesis, Chapter 26, Verses 3–5: “Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you; for unto you, and unto your seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I swore unto Abraham your father; “And I will make your seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto your seed all these THE LAND IS MINE part iii countries; and in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; “Because that Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.” SUBSTITUTION Isaac grew great in prosperity before the eyes of the Philistines. But it wasn’t until he settled in Beer-sheba that God would reveal Himself again, reminding Isaac of the promises He gave his father Abraham. Isaac would then build an altar to the Lord. The expression, “build an altar,” meant he made sacrifices to God. Isaac knew that God was the One who supplied the sacrifice because he was the one who God spared and substituted with a ram. The foundational doctrine of substitution — Jesus Christ died in my place for my sin — was established in the story of Abraham being asked by God to sacrifice the miracle child Isaac. God would call Isaac Abraham’s only son. He was the promised child (seed) to which all the promises of God would pass. Abraham was again tested, as was Isaac, to obey God. ISLAMIC DECEPTION In Islam, as discussed in earlier articles, Ishmael is viewed as the child of promise. The fabric of contention by Muslims is they believe Ishmael is the rightful progeny and succession of Abraham, being his firstborn. Islam believes Jews are no longer awarded blessings by Allah because they did not embrace Allah’s last prophet, Muhammad. The collective Islamic nations — and virtually all Muslims — do not recognize Israel’s right to possess any of the land (today called Palestine) promised by God to her. Nations. On a sad note, the U.S. often behaved in a manner that either opposed Israel, or placed her on compromising grounds with her Arab Islamic neighbors. For example, soon after the British left Egypt in 1954, Egyptian President Al Nasser was expected to join the Middle East Defense Organization (MEDO). This was a brain child idea of U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles to defend the Middle East region from communism and protect U.S. interests, especially with oil. Nasser would not join MEDO until Dulles agreed to address his concerns over Israel. The withdrawal of the British left friction between Israeli and Egyptian forces. Nasser insisted Dulles compel Israel to forfeit land as a down payment on peace before Egypt would join MEDO. The offer appealed to Dulles since he, “reviled the Jewish state,” and called it, “the millstone around our necks.” The State Department believed Israel could achieve peace by ceding land to its Arab Islamic neighbors. At the end of 1954, Dulles would arrange a mediation attempt between Israel and Egypt with a plan he devised called “Alpha.” It was a covert plan in which Israel would give up land for peace with Egypt. Israeli Prime Minister Ben-Gurion explained how he refused to reward Egypt for its aggression against Israel in 1948 — Israel’s War of Independence. A second effort by Dulles — this one dubbed “Gamma” — was to arrange a meeting between Ben-Gurion and Nasser. Although the American emissary arrived in the region, Nasser had no intention of discussing peace. In a third effort by Dulles to get his way in the region, he authorized another plan that was called, “Omega.” Omega sought to strengthen and promote Saudi King Saud as an “Islamic pope” who would supersede Nasser as the Arab leader. It seems American policy since Dulles’ days has been the mantra: “Land for peace.” AMERICA AND ISRAEL TODAY Israel is now facing its biggest test of tolerance. For many years it was understood and agreed that Israel and Palestine were to negotiate four primary components for a two-state solution: »» Settlement building; »» 1967 borders; »» Right of return of refugees; and »» Jerusalem divided, East Jerusalem the new capitol of Palestine. The first two negotiating legs that supported the negotiating table have been kicked out by President Obama. Will Israel be able to steer through the avalanche of obstacles created by America’s current administration? Will the Palestinian people be able to persuade the United Nations to recognize them as a fullfledged member without negotiating with Israel? Will America sacrifice its protection from God by throwing Israel aside? AMERICA AND ISRAEL PAST Has American policy always been in favor of Israel? Harry S. Truman pledged America’s support and backing to the creation of Israel in 1948. American support of Israel enabled her to be recognized as a legitimate sovereign nation by the United TODAY: ISRAEL & THE MIDDLE EAST THE EVANGELIST SEPTEMBER 2014 35 THE VALUE OF CHILDREN’S MINISTRY by mike muzzerall Prov. 22:6 - “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” WHY DO WE HAVE CHILDREN’S MINISTRY? Last fall, I was asked that question. I thought I misunderstood the man who asked me, but no. This man had heard a preacher make the comment, “Children and youth ministries are unscriptural.” He went on to say that the family should be ministered to as one group, seeing there was no mention of children’s ministry in the book of Acts. If we were to use that logic, then we would need to shut down SBN and any other form of outreach not specifically mentioned in the Bible such as ministry to drug addicts or to pregnant teens seeking abortions. Clearly there is an ongoing need for all of these types of ministries and outreaches, but is there a biblical basis for children and youth ministry? Do children, youth, and adults all learn the same way? Is it possible to have an anointed, effective children’s ministry? TRAIN UP A CHILD One of the most powerful verses used in children’s ministry is Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” This speaks of a continual, conscious endeavor to educate children about the things of God until it is so much a part of their lives that, as they grow up, they won’t depart from that right path. “And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. And you shall write them upon the door posts of your house, and upon your gates” (Deut. 11:19-20). As we see from this Scripture, every opportunity should be taken to minister to children: sitting, walking, lying down, and getting up. It is a proven fact that children learn differently than adults do. This changes during different stages of child development, so why not teach them in ways that they can learn easier? Now I am not against children being part of the main services, of course not. However, sometimes an object lesson, a PowerPoint 36 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST slide, or a sermon dealing directly with what children or youth are facing might help train them in the way they should grow. REACH THEM WHILE THEY ARE CHILDREN Here at Family Worship Center, we believe in children’s ministry. God blessed and moved mightily in our 2014 International Kids Conference, as well as during kids camps where we were invited as guests to minister in Spartanburg, S.C.; Ottawa, Ill.; Palestine, Tex.; and Crosby, Tex. Children’s ministry is important. If we don’t reach them in Salvation Station, and Pastor Gabe doesn’t reach them in Crossfire, then we may find ourselves trying to reach them later on through prison ministry. WHAT DID JESUS DO? This generation of kids is under spiritual and moral attack more than any other generation in the history of mankind. They need to know the Message of the Cross. They need to know the power of the completed work of Calvary. They need to be ministered to in an effective way. Jesus rebuked the disciples for hindering parents from bringing their children to Him to be blessed, as if being in the crowd should have been sufficient enough, as some say today. Jesus took time to minister to individual children. He didn’t see them as an interruption to ministry — He saw them as a different part of His ministry. Pastors, won’t you do the same? Perhaps the following suggestion would be of some help: if you would like, as many churches are already doing, you are welcome to tape the Sunday service of Family Worship Center, which comes to you by television. You can then play the praise and worship back over your public address system in your church, with the people singing along with it, which will give you an excellent praise and worship portion. There is absolutely no charge for this, and we would pray that you would take advantage of it. There are many of you who are members of Family Worship Center Media Church, and many who aren’t but still pay your tithes to this work, or at least give offerings, for which we are so very, very thankful. Donnie was in a church just the other day that had been doing this for some months, and he said the response was absolutely excellent. We want to be a help to you, and if you would like to do this until you can get your own musicians, please feel free to do so. FAMILY WORSHIP CENTER MEDIA CHURCH It just keeps growing and growing and growing. How so honored and privileged we are to have thousands upon thousands of you who are becoming a part of this ministry by the means of television, radio, or Internet. All over the world, people gather together and have church by watching the television service that comes from Family Worship Center every Sunday morning. It comes on live at 10 a.m. (CT) in America and then replays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. (CT). Of course, we also have the Wednesday night Bible study and the Sunday night service, which are both aired also. There’s nothing more important in the world than the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and there is nothing more important than the Gospel of the Cross. Thank you so very, very much for being a part of it. 38 SEPTEMBER 2014 THE EVANGELIST If any believer will start out giving to God, and do so systematically, no matter how small it may be at the beginning, I’ll guarantee you that believer will be blessed by the Lord immeasurably so. If that person will be faithful and will live with the spirit of expectation, I can guarantee this will happen. The believer must trust that God is going to honor His Word, which He most definitely will do and, thereby, open the windows of Heaven. So, if you aren’t paying your tithes, start out right now and see what the Lord will do. Many might say, “Brother Swaggart, I would love to do that, but I just don’t see how I can.” That’s the worst decision that anyone can ever make. The Lord said, “Prove me.” That means to put Him to the test (Mal. 3:10). In fact, even as I have previously stated, many people write me asking, “Brother Swaggart, where do I owe my tithes?” The answer to that is very, very simple. You owe your tithes to that which feeds you. Like I said, it’s just that simple. 2014 INTERNATIONAL KIDS CONFERENCE Of course, that’s a couple of months past; however, I felt I must say something about it. It was absolutely fantastic. Brother Mike and Sister Ana just did a marvelous job in giving these kids something that is very, very important. Gabriel called Frances and me the Friday night of the camp. He had just picked up Sam and brought her home. Brother Mike preached on the Holy Spirit to the children, with hundreds present, then asked all who wanted to be baptized with the Holy Spirit to come forward. Sam was one of them. She is 7 years old. She had no sooner knelt at the altar when someone laid hands on her and she began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit of God gave the utterance. To say that her mother and dad, her grandparents, and her great-grandparents are happy is a gross understatement. How we thank the Lord for that. BIBLE DEGREE PROGRAMS Considering that this camp is growing so big, with hundreds and hundreds of kids all the way from 5 years old up to 12, we are going to have to plan differently for the hundreds that are going to come. We have the facilities here; it just takes a little planning to get it done. In how many kids’ camps in the nation can little kids get saved and then be baptized with the Holy Spirit? I am sure there must be a few, but that number is very, very low. We guarantee that when you send your children to Salvation Station International Kids Conference, they are going to get something that will do them for time and eternity. In fact, that goes for all the camps and conferences. THE OFFERS A lady wrote me the other day saying, “Brother Swaggart, the material that we get from your ministry is A1.” I appreciate that very much because that’s what we try to do. First of all, we try to make sure the content is that which will educate you in the Word of God, whether it be worship, preaching, or teaching. In other words, we want to give you something that’s worthwhile for your money, and we believe that we do. Whether it’s the Bibles, the books, the music, etc. — it’s the very best that we can do. As well, as it regards the quality of the Bibles, books, music, etc., we try our best to give you the very finest production quality that money can buy. In the midst of this note to you each month, I want to say, Thank you, for praying for us daily and for supporting this work, without which we simply couldn’t do what we are doing. Your gifts make it all possible. To be sure, there is nothing more important in the world than the Word of God, and there is nothing more valuable than the salvation of souls. Thank you for helping to make it all possible and for helping to change people’s lives.
