Basement pipes need repair? Goldstar Plumbing can fix it fast. Thinking of having central air conditioning installed? From minor plumbing repair to air conditioning and heating installation, Goldstar can get the job done quickly, efficiently, and to your personal satisfaction. Owner Joe Giacalone, a St. James resident, has been in the plumbing profession for over 20 years: “I first became interested in plumbing as a profession when I was in the 10th grade and my parent’s house in Hauppauge burned down. I watched a construction crew rebuild what was left of our hi-ranch from sheetrock to flooring, from electrical work to plumbing. I became particularly interested in watching the plumber do the repiping. We struck up a conversation and, recognizing my interest in his trade, he recommended I attend BOCES, which I did.” Since then Joe says that he keeps up on the latest technologies of the trade by attending professional seminars and taking course work. He is personally on site at every job that Goldstar runs in a supervisory and often hands-on capacity. According to Mr. Giacalone, Goldstar Plumbing does not hire subcontractors and every job is guaranteed. They offer all phases of plumbing renovation and installation including bathrooms, gas piping, waste piping and kitchens. They do both residential and commercial work. Fully licensed and insured, OUR TOWN • JUNE 2006 the Goldstar team is on-call 24/7. They can almost always be on site for any emergency within two hours and make it a habit to return calls within 10 minutes, according to Mr. Giacalone. “We also pride ourselves in our exceptional customer service,” says Joe. “We will make service calls after 6 p.m. weekdays and on Saturdays to accommodate working families. We provide free estimates as well as senior and veteran discounts. And we pride ourselves in our repeat customer satisfaction.” Goldstar Plumbing provides services from the Hamptons to western Nassau and has been featured on the home improvement television show “Moving Up” on TLC. They are currently offering a special on air conditioning start ups and installation. –5– Come True at Oldest family owned Nursery School in Suffolk County (3rd generation) Story Book Hollow offers an academic pre-school curriculum and Summer Program: 1/2 Day Sessions – Monday-Friday for children 2 years to 4 years old Give us a call for an appointment to learn how we can enrich your child’s pre-school years. 631-584-4900 556-08 North Country Road, St. James, NY 11780 OUR TOWN • JUNE 2006 –6– A R O U N D T O W N Flag Disposal Ceremony Held A Flag Disposal Ceremony was held on June 3, 2006 by the St. James Sherwood Brothers Post 1152 of the American Legion. Whatever the reason, the results have been terrific and some of our members would like to share their successful experiences with you. My 13 year old son, James, joined Energy in the summer of 2005. Not being a natural athlete, he was out of shape and quite pudgy due to inactivity. He started one-on-one training sessions at Energy twice a week. James really enjoys his time at Energy. Often after finishing his training at Energy he will leave saying how great he feels and that he had a fantastic time. He can easily run the mile now, cutting seconds off his time each week, and has slimmed down considerably. I am very proud of his accomplishments this year, and thankful to the caring and professional staff at Energy for helping him achieve his goals. – Wendy DeGaray, Smithtown My 2 kids, 12 and nearly 14, are not much for team sports. As a New Years resolution, we agreed to exercise more, and since I was already a member at Energy, my kids decided they wanted to join as well. Over the past 5 months, I have seen tremendous improvements in their endurance, strength and self-esteem. They are proud to tell their friends that they train at Energy. The atmosphere is fun and friendly and now my daughter actually teaches me her routines. It is also a nice way to spend time with my kids. – Renee Barriere, Smithtown Because of the atmosphere and specialty services we offer, Energy appeals to many people who would not be comfortable or successful in other fitness clubs. The Energy team provides the extra support, education, and personal attention that young people and beginners need to embark on a consistent and effective exercise program. We offer a variety of unique services including One-on One Energy Training, Team Training and STRIVE Circuit Classes. We are confident that every member can be placed on an effective fitness path that’s right for them! With the school year coming to an end, and summer just around the corner, now is a great time to try something new. You’ll never know unless you make an effort! COTTAGES TO CASTLES, a house and garden tour, is being hosted by the Smithtown Garden Club, the Smithtown Historical Society, the Smithtown Township Arts Council and the St. James Chamber of Commerce. You will have an opportunity to peek into these fabulous private residences... some glamourous, some charming, but all are appealing. This exciting day will pique one’s interest and delight the curious. You will come away with decorating and garden ideas that will inspire the creativity in you. The gardens and private homes on the tour have been graciously opened by their owners, for the sole purpose of supporting the sponsor organizations through this fund raising event. During your tour, please allow ST. JAMES yourself pause to indulge in the “gourmet luncheon,” at the historic and private Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James. Be sure to stop at the St. James Episcopal Church where you will have the opportunity to shop at some of the most interesting boutiques on the Island at the lovely Mills Hall. The day is designed so that you visit the sites at your own pace, with your own transportation. Volunteers will be stationed at the homes and will be able to answer questions that you might have. The homeowners that have so generously opened their homes have spared nothing to achieve these spectacular environments for gracious living. The concern for detail in each home is very apparent. You will roam through a 42,000-square-foot historic estate with manor house and guest quarters complete with a 25’x50’ indoor pool and massage room that meets the needs and lifestyle of this “on the go” 21st century family. Enjoy a fabulous waterfront home recently restored and decorated luxuriously for gra- cious living inside and out – with amazing detail. Visit an architecturally grand contemporary-style estate, with its impressively designed grounds, that has been decorated with the help of a renowned designer, and now fits the fun lifestyle of this family. You will see a dream come true for a family with young children, and with the help of their decorator, took a contemporary and transformed it completely into a magnificent European-style home with antique Louis XVI pieces. Another stop on the tour will take you on a historic journey complete with stained glass and Tiffany windows. This is just a sampling of what is in store for you on September 8, 2006. This year’s winners, who received the scholarships at the annual senior awards ceremony on Thursday evening June 1, 2006, were Michael Mitchell and Samuel Riss. Michael Mitchell will pursue a degree in architecture from the University of Buffalo while Samuel Riss plans on attending the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. When we asked why he started this scholarship program, Harlan replied, “Donna Harlow would bring the Smithtown High School Chamber Orchestra to perform a holiday show for our Rotary Club each December. Watching the students warm up and then perform, I just felt that the whole group seemed like a bunch of good kids that deserved support. In addition the arts have become a very important part of our lives, we want to share our passion with future generations.” The scholarships are available to seniors concentrating on, and intending a career in design, the fine arts or performing arts. OUR TOWN • JUNE 2006 – 30 – A R O U N D T O W N “Pirate” Treasure Hunt for a Buried SUV at Georgetown Volvo Ever wanted to experience the ways of a true buried treasureseeking pirate? Georgetown Volvo of Smithtown in Saint James will support Volvo Car Corporation’s official promotion of Disney's upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest with a multi-media treasure hunt for a Volvo XC90 V8 that has been buried somewhere in the world. Here’s how she blows, me hearties: beginning now through July 11, individuals can visit Georgetown Volvo of Smithtown to pick up a free treasure map. Once online, they are asked to go to www.volvocars.us/thehunt and register for the world’s first hunt for a buried vehicle. Treasure hunters then will participate in a challenging, engaging and fun-filled online adventure to solve a series of online clues and puzzles. The buried one-of-a-kind, pirate-themed Volvo XC90 features a variety of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chestinspired elements, including menacing graphics from the film, black leather seats, custom-painted 20-inch wheels and more. Once registered online, individuals will have puzzles emailed to them on a regular basis. Those who solve the puzzles correctly will continue to receive clues. Individuals can join at any time though July 11, and can catch up with other participants if they correctly answer the puzzles. As the contest progresses, the puzzles will become increasingly harder to solve, with the final online clue emailed July 12. Volvo Car Corporation will then select seven finalists from around the world who correctly guess the answer to the final online clue. In August, those finalists will be flown with a guest to the secret car burial location. Each finalist will then set off on a manic on-the-ground search for the buried vehicle. The first treasure hunter to unearth the SUV gets to keep it. To participate, individuals must visit Georgetown Volvo of Smithtown at 633 Middle Country Road in St. James to pick up a treasure map. Winners will only be eligible if they can produce the original treasure map upon conclusion of the hunt. continued on page 99 D EBLASIO CAPO designbuild ARCHITECTURAL PLANS Fine Homes & Renovations 273 Lake Avenue, St. James • Phone: 631.584.5503 • Fax: 631.584.3079 • www.dcdesignbuilders.com • Design Services • New Homes • Renovations • Award-Winning Designs featured in major publications • Builders of the St. James Gazebo • Participated in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition: • ST. Arline Goldstein, chairwoman of the event, would like to thank her talented and energetic group of volunteers: Diane Record, who helped to organize the craft projects and create the table decorations; Helene Krantz, Janice Zingale, June Carlson and Helen Williams, who assisted throughout the afternoon, from the charming tea, catered by Parties by Ziggy of St. James, to the creative part of the event, when the Princesses decorated tiaras and wands with glitter and colored stones, that they took home. Ariel and Cinderella mingled with the guests, autographed books, and posed for photos with the Princesses, that were taken by Memento Studios, of St. James. The 29th Annual New York Philharmonic Free Concert at Heckscher State Park will be held on July 15. Tens of thousands have arranged their summer 2006 plans around this date, knowing that the excitement of this world-class event is not to be missed! Conductor Xian Zhang will lead the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and guest violinist Jennifer Koh in a program that will enchant audiences of all ages. As the last strains of music fade into the night, the evening sky will be filled with the incandescent display of Grucci Fireworks. This year the New York Philharmonic Free Concert Committee of Long Island is proud to once again work with Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Long Island Cares’ mission is to bring together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island. All spectators will be encouraged to donate canned or nonperishable items to Long Island Cares. Last year, over 1,600 pounds of food was collected. Many families plan an entire day's outing at the park, enjoying the many facilities and opportunities for recreation, and bringing along snacks, drinks and a picnic dinner. The enjoyment of selecting their special spot on the lawn, listening to this exceptional music in a beautiful neighborhood setting and ending the evening with a flurry of fireworks is not to be missed, as newcomers young and old discover every year. The concert is free, but there is a $10 per car parking fee for the park until 5 p.m. After that, a $10 free-will contribution will be requested at the toll booth. You can help support this event by purchasing the full color, limited edition commemorative poster for $25 or buying raffle tickets at $2 each or a book of six for $10. For more information about how you can help support this concert, call the Islip Arts Council at 631224-5420. While at Little Shelter, these animals receive the best medical care and loving attention the volunteers and staff can possibly give. Sadly, not all of the dogs and cats find homes right away, Sadder still, some are never adopted and spend the rest of their lives in Little Shelter’s care. The cost of feeding, housing and caring for all these animals is huge. But for as little as $35 per month, you can become a Little Shelter Sponsor and help with the cost of food, housing and medical care of one animal. We have over 200 dogs or cats that you can choose from or you can leave it up to Little Shelter to choose for you. As a sponsor, your name will be listed next to the animal’s photo on their website at www.littleshelter.com. Sponsoring is also a unique gift for the animal lovers in your life. Drinking Enough Water • Water is critical for our survival. In fact, after oxygen, it is the second most necessary life-sustaining factor. • Under normal circumstances, people can live for weeks without food, but only for a few days without water. • Water helps form the fluid in our joints, the mucus in our lungs, and many other bodily fluids. We need water when we exercise or are exposed to high temperatures. • We lose water through breathing, sweating, urination and bowel movements. When we lose excessive amounts of water, or water and electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, we get dehydrated. • Thirst, weakness, nausea, irritability, dizziness, confusion, headache, abnormal heart rhythms, and fluid accumulation in the abdomen and/or the lungs may be signs of dehydration. • Dehydration can happen much quicker when a person is physically exerted. For example, an athlete can get dehydrated after an hour or less of exercise. • Fluid requirements vary. For example, infants need more liquids than adults because their bodies maintain a higher water content and their systems do not provide water balance that’s as good as what’s found in adults’ bodies. • Fruit juices, carbohydrate gels, sodas, alcohol and high-sugar sports drinks speed up dehydration by stimulating excessive urine production and/or decreasing the overall beneficial fluid intake. • Daily water requirements for adults are approximately 0.5 oz. of water for every pound of weight. • A general guide for replacing water losses is 1 liter (34 MEMBER: • AMERICAN CHIROPRACTIC ASSOCIATION • INTERNATIONAL CHIROPRACTIC ASSOCIATION • COUNCIL ON DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING • AMERICAN CHIROPRACTIC ASSOCIATION SPORTS COUNCIL • N.Y.S. Children under 14 continued on page 66 – 65 – “For the first half of my program I truly had to convince myself that what I was doing and the money I was spending was worth it.” For the first six months I constantly berated myself with feelings of guilt. Being the mother of two, I was used to spending money for my children’s lessons, practices, sports equipment and other miscellaneous things that they needed, but I was not used to spending money on myself. For the first half of the program I truly had to convince myself that what I was doing and the money I was spending was worth it. After a year and a half of diligent training, I can honestly say that every cent was completely worth it. I have not only completely transformed my body, lost 14 pounds and developed more self confidence, but I have taught my children an important lesson. They have witnessed me waiver at times, doubt myself and become frustrated as I have trained throughout the past year, but they have witnessed my determination, my self worth and the incredible transformation of my body. I have become a much happier mother who has learned how to eat properly, take time out for herself, and enjoy the new enthusiastic, confident and shapely woman that I have become. – Debbie P.S. I, as a designer on Long Island, have been lobbying for this concept to become a reality in the past decade, working to convince builders and homeowners in surrounding areas that “over 55” communities are viable, sensible and help reduce the general tax burden on towns. Today, I’m pleased to say, more and more condo communities, both over 55 and not, have appeared, enabling the modern senior to live and work near their children and grandchildren, their friends and the communities in which they are involved. Many such complexes contain clubhouses, health and fitness centers with indoor and outdoor pools, and some even have one or more restaurants. All this, and no more shoveling snow and mowing lawns! On Long Island, as in many other areas across the nation, the homes have appreciated tremendously in the last 20 or 30 years. If a family maintained their home, they could easily triple or quadruple their investment. Purchasing a smaller or easier to maintain dwelling and newly decorating it, probably would leave folks with a little left over and a new beginning. So, how do people feel about leaving their lovely, perhaps secluded homes with larger rooms, more storage and comfortable old surroundings? Great! Change is a good thing. I know because I not only have decorated dozens for clients, but left a 4,500-square-foot home on two acres to live in a 2,000-squarefoot condo with a backyard the same size as I used to have-only now, I share it with 24 other families. Is living easier? You bet. Has it opened the way for new friendships? Absolutely. Has it freed me to assess what physical things I really need and those I don’t? Clearly, the positives outweigh the negatives, as so many people are discovering. As a designer whose concern is to make the process as much fun as the end result, I now realized the shoe was on the other foot. Perhaps it wasn’t as easy to pack, move, stay in an interim dwelling until the new digs were ready, unpack and organize in a smaller space, all while having fun. There was an element of excitement, a few moments of hesitation considering if this was the right move, but all in all it was a new beginning – a way to get out of the rut some of us feel we’re in and share the new experience with spouses, family and friends. If nothing else, it sure gives you something to talk about! So now comes the big question? Can a condo feel like home or is it just a place before the final resting place or assisted living? Here’s my story: What does an interior designer do when faced with the challenge of creating a new home in a condo after 27 years in a residence over twice the size? The same thing she tells her clients – OUR TOWN • JUNE 2006 clean up, throw out, organize and get a plan. Mine was to try to keep my head above water, pack for an interim move to a tiny apartment before the actual move, juggle some 40 clients, prepare my radio show and articles and try to keep my sanity. So where did I begin? At the drawing board – of course. Space was the key and judicious planning would afford me the ability to maximize every inch I had to work with. Good fortune smiled on the Weinstein’s when we learned that Michael Dubb was the builder. The Beechwood Organization (Michael and his partner Leslie A. Lerner), are award winners and Michael is the former president of the L.I. Builders Institute, philanthropist, and a caring Long Islander. He and I had an opportunity to get to know each other on my radio show, and he was kind enough to allow me the professional courtesy of designing and creating my own interior space. Now the fun began! Enlisting the aid of husband Bernie, whose BNW Industries has provided countless architectural and builtin solutions for my clients over the past 15 years, it was now my turn. I got out my wish list and began to design it into reality, and as it grew, so did my impatience. It seems our clients kept getting bumped up to the top of the orders, and I fell further behind while our 500-foot temporary abode, with no washer and dryer (terrible) and no kitchen stove (not so terrible) seemed to be shrinking. D-day was Memorial Day weekend when my elderly parents were coming to visit. Three months to go and we had sheetrock walls, one temporary bathroom, no kitchen, vanities, flooring, railing, cabinetry or closets. But deadlines and prescontinued on page 99 – 73 – OUR TOWN • JUNE 2006 – 74 – H O M E & G A R D E N COLLECTOR’S CORNER: Scrap Booking Past and Present by Carol Gibbons Like many people who reach this crossroad in their life, I have trouble believing that my eldest child is part of the Smithtown High School graduating class of 2006. Laura is 18 years old. I find myself asking, where has the time gone? Wasn’t it only two weeks ago that we were sitting on the floor in the playroom with scissors and glue, crafting paper doll cut outs? The photo album I’ve been keeping for her over the years lets me know this cannot be true. It is over stuffed and exploding with pictures, awards, play bills, match books, pressed flowers and certificates to suggest otherwise. When I started this collection of life living artifacts for Laura, I always intended to hand it over to her as she entered the next phase of her life – College. Similar to passing the baton at one of her track meets, and now that the time has come, I’m finding it difficult to part with this uniquely special collection that summarizes my daughter. I presented my dilemma to my neighbor Noreen who is our friendly neighborhood scrapbook ing guru, and she suggested that “we” meaning that she would help me, clean it up a little. Get a new book, reproduce as many of the mementos and photos as possible and create a new updated scrapbook, one that would truly tell the story of Laura. This idea really excited me and I wanted to do it authentically. First I began with the history of scrapbooking in the Ephemera Encyclopedia and it contained a wealth of information that helped me to understand how this craft evolved. Beginning in 1769 William Granger published a book about the history of England that included blank pages so readers could add their own illustrations. Others followed and this process came to be known as “grangerizing.” By the early 1800’s embossed albums with blank pages, similar to the ones used today, were called common place books. Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain were both known to have kept a common place book about themselves. In Germany, in 1836 the first official scrapbook appeared, and when Queen The Ye llow Cottage Antiques, Accessories & Gifts for you and your home Cottage Style Furniture Pottery Vintage Linens Quilts • Ironstone Americana Colorful Florals & Gifts 415 No. Country Rd. The name given to the book by the scraps and bits they filled them with, locks of hair, pressed flowers, feathers, ribbons, calling cards, poems, illustrations, and letters. In 1870 die cutting and stamping were introduced adding another aspect to the craft. But it wasn’t until 1888 when George Eastman introduced the Kodak camera that the scrapbook was revolutionized, adding a whole new dimension. In the 1940’s Ansel Adams and other photographers started to use photography as art, rather than a way to tell a story. This new focus put scrapbooking on hold for many years. Today scrapbooking has returned bigger than ever, and with the technology of computers and digital cameras it is creative and easy. The modern scrapbook is imaginative, colorful and through proper journaling tells a fabulous story of its owner. The goal is to get rid of the family shoebox filled with unidentifiable relatives, find out who they were, tell their story, and give our families roots. Scrapbooking is a way to preserve the past for our future. Hopefully the scrap book I’m creating for Laura will be a proper representation of her life’s story. Laura’s great grandchildren should be able to pick it up, look through it and get a sense of who she was. How special, how loved, how uniquely wonderful she is to me will be preserved and passed on to others. I have come to realize that a scrapbook is a gift one we can give to ourselves and one that we can pass on to those we love, even those we have yet to meet. But, the traditional detached single family home is not the ideal situation for everyone. For those just starting out, affordability may be an issue. An empty nester may want to downsize and not have the hassles of yard work and other maintenance. Or it can simply be that the traditional family home doesn’t suit your lifestyle. When you own a condo, you own the title to the space within the walls of your living quarters. Common areas such as hallways, roofs, parking lots, green areas and pools are shared with the other owners in the complex. The more common type of condo is the apartment-style, in which you may have units on either side of you and above and/or below. However, there are other styles. There are units that are designed more like townhomes, with single or multiple levels and one or two common walls with neighbors. You may even find a condo in a building that was a multi-unit apartment converted to condo units. Condos are attractive to many buyers because they offer them a chance to own their residence and build equity at what is sometimes a lower cost than a singlefamily detached home. One factor to consider is that condominium owners generally must pay a condo association fee monthly. These fees defray the cost of maintenance, repairs and upgrades to the community’s common areas as well as the cost for the services of a property management company. However, if you would rather spend your free time doing something besides mowing the lawn, painting the outside of your home, or waiting at home for the pool maintenance person, then a condo may be for you. Other advantages of owning a condo are the amenities that may be part of your complex such as a pool, tennis courts, fitness center or clubhouse. These are some of the perks you might not be able to afford or even have room for if you were to purchase a singlefamily home. Of course, as with all things, there are some disadvantages to continued on page 99 Scruples The Prime Rate is Now 8.00% And that’s just one reason why now is a great time HEAD to refinance your home mortgage. Liardi Summer is here now. Vacations, picnics, reunions, camp and boating. We really don’t have a vacation from gardening though. Your plants really need you now. Make sure to keep an eye on your container plantings. They may need water twice a day now. The heat and humidity will dry them out. Add some water-soluble or fish emulsion fertilizer when you water. The nutrients in the soil will leach out each time you water. You should keep after the weeds also. These unwanted plants will rob vital water from your flowers and vegetables. It will probably be a good idea to work at dusk or dawn during these hot days. Make sure to protect yourself from mosquitoes. You should check for any standing water in your yard. Even the smallest amount can breed hundreds of the pests. This is about the last time you should pinch back your mums. Feed them every 2-3 weeks until buds form. You will be rewarded with nice bushy plants this fall. Keep deadheading your flowers, it really pays off with continued blooms. It is a good excuse to just stroll around the garden at the end of a hot, busy day. Stay with your zucchini plants. Harvest them when they are small and tender. Use some of the blossoms too, for cooking. You can dip them into batter and fry them. If you don’t have any, you can often find them at the farm stand. The owners are usually helpful with recipes also. This is the time to take cuttings of some flowering plants and herbs to grow inside this winter. Some that room well are geraniums, begonias, lavender, marigolds and oregano. Fresh herbs during the winter are a treat. As the lettuce and peas in your garden finish, clean them up and of boiling water over the herbs and let steep for 20-30 minutes. Refrigerate until cold. You can then add the juice of a lemon or orange and serve over ice with a sprig of fresh mint. If you have a rainy day and need to occupy the children, they can create a seaside picture. While away at the shore or just during a walk on the beach start collecting. Collect some sand, small shells (look close, there are real small ones), pebbles, driftwood, dried seaweed, beach grass and feathers. Get some oak tag or cardboard, tacky glue and markers. Using all these materials, have each child create a scene of a favorite spot, a favorite memory or a fantasy place. You could even get a shadow box and frame the creation. amend the soil with compost and manure. You can start to plant your fall garden of beets, broccoli, carrots, kale, spinach and lettuce. This is also the time to plant seeds of perennials. This will give them a headstart for next year. You can prevent your lawn from creeping into your garden beds very simply. Just roll up some sheets of newspaper and lay them between the bed and the lawn. Just cover with mulch and you’re done. Your lawn mower will just roll right over it too. After all this yard work you may want to settle down in the shade with a refreshing ice herb tea. Some good candidates for your tea are lemon balm, lemon grass, any mint, lemon or lime verbena and pineapple sage. Put about 10 fresh lemon or lime verbena leaves, 10 or more mint leaves, a stalk of lemon grass and 2 tbs. of chopped ginger into a heat resistant bowl. Pour 2 cups OUR TOWN • JUNE 2006 You probably have tomatoes ripe by now. Here is a tasty idea for your next party. Cut some slices of Italian bread and brush both side with olive oil. Sprinkle with pepper and bake at 425º for 5-7 minutes, or until crisp and light brown, turning once. Top with mozzarella cheese, pieces of chopped tomato and snipped fresh basil. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Have a happy and safe 4th of July. Celebrate with a red, white and blue dessert of farm fresh raspberries or red currents, luscious homemade whipped cream and plump blueberries, yum. Of course, we’ll need to take a walk or swim some laps after that. Enjoy these, hot, summer days. No matter what type of vehicle you’re driving, everyone needs to follow the rules of the road and watch out for other vehicles. But, drivers of cars and trucks often don’t recognize or see motorcycles. Because of their smaller size, motorcycles may present special concerns for motorists. To help motorists better understand the need to share the road with motorcyclists, here are some safety tips from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF-USA): • Motorcycles may look farther away than they really are. When preparing to make a turn, assume that the motorcycle is closer than it appears. • Take extra caution in checking blind spots, as a motorcycle may be hidden from sight by the body of your car or masked by objects such as bushes, fences and bridges. cyclist to always be able to dodge out of the way or be able to stop on a dime. Turn signals may not cancel after a turn. Allow greater distance between your car and a motorcycle for stopping and don’t assume turn signals mean they are going to turn again. • Motorcyclists often adjust their position in a lane so they can be seen more easily, avoid debris or minimize the effects of passing vehicles. Don’t assume that this adjustment is a reckless maneuver. Although motorcycles have greater maneuverability than cars and trucks, don’t expect a motor- Editor’s Note: Jim Winter is a State Farm Insurance Agent, located at 320 Lake Avenue in St. James. This column is coming up on eight years old! Over the past eight years this column has taken a look at a variety of investment topics. We have looked deep into the intricacies and nuances of the markets and economy. We have looked at the macro and microeconomic picture. (Fancy words for big and little.) This month will be a return to basics. Not the difference between a stock and bond. Not the definition of risk or how to set goals. I mean VERY basic. What is investing? This very basic question is rarely analyzed. Have some fun with this question. Ask people what investing is and you will get answers like: buying and selling stocks; managing a portfolio of investments; planning for retirement; strategic allocation of liquid assets. (OK, if you get the last answer you are talking to someone with a deep love economics.) In its most basic form investing is simply your second business. No matter what your primary business or job, investing is another business. You, the investor, own that business. You have to decide what is the goal of the business. Is the goal to produce more income than your primary business or job? Is it to supplement your income immediately? Is it to have something to leave your kids? You must decide. Like any business, funding becomes a primary concern. Starting an investment business requires money like any other business. The better funded you are, the bigger business you can have. Unlike most businesses, investing can be started with almost any amount and built slowly. Many businesses require significant funding in order for them to have a chance at survival, investing is not one of those. Let’s play a game. Instead of calling it an investment business let’s call it a dress shop. Where will your dress shop be located? There are stores available with high or low rent. Is location important to you? It should be! Look for the location that makes sense for you. Maybe 5th Avenue in Manhattan is right or perhaps Main Street would be better. Do NOT make your decision solely on the rent, instead make your decision on the value. Your goal is not continued on facing page OUR TOWN • JUNE 2006 – 81 – F I N A N C I A L continued to have the dress shop with the lowest rent, it is to have the best return possible on your dress shop business. Keeping money in a mattress avoids taxes and fees but will it provide results? Who will manage the shop? Unless your primary job is selling dresses at Macy’s you probably are not the best expert available to manage the shop. You want to find a good manager to run the shop. Here is a stumbling block for many shop owners. Would you hire a manager for your dress shop, hand them the keys and say goodbye? I hope not. Like most successful business owners, you want your manager to keep you informed. They don’t have to make you a dress expert, but at least explain what is happening in the business. Also they must be accountable for their results. As the owner you need to know how to measure the success of your dress shop manager. What are you going to base their results on? In investing there are many benchmarks, the key is to pick the one that is right for you. What will you stock in your dress shop? How about nothing but size 6 red evening gowns? Not a very smart decision. I want my shop diversified in order to meet the varied needs and desires of my customers, just like I want my portfolio diversified in order to meet the varied situations in the markets and economy. Hopefully, this column has given you insight into the “business” of investing or perhaps a head start in opening your very own dress shop. Just don’t forget... Investing should be everyone’s second business. Treat it as such. Interview managers to find which one works best with you. Build it like any other business and hopefully one day the income from that second business will grow past the income of your primary business (or job). The largest generation when they arrived, they now face rising healthcare costs and imminent retirement. And single boomers must often bear sole responsibility for managing their households and making life decisions; thus, planning for the future often becomes a moving target. But it’s important to plan for the unexpected, and prepare for a financially secure future. short-term protection, term insurance might be for you. Premiums are set for a pre-determined period and increase later on, though policies can be purchased with a conversion privilege. Permanent insurance, initially more expensive than term, has fixed premiums, and can be customized to suit your needs. Another plus – your policy builds tax-deferred cash value that can be accessed through loans or withdrawals.1 The Importance of Life Insurance Life insurance is crucial – regardless of whether you have dependents. Most boomers have debts – a mortgage, education or car loans. And final expenses can run into the thousands. If something were to happen to you, who would be responsible for such debts? If you are a single parent, legal guardian or godparent, you may want to purchase life insurance, taking into consideration future costs such as college and childcare. For those financially assisting parents, you may also need to consider who’ll bear the financial burden, should the unexpected occur. Disability Income Insurance2 As a single boomer, disability income insurance is crucial. If you were unable to work, could you meet basic expenses – mortgage or rent payments, food and clothing? In the event of an injury or illness, you may not be able to rely on workman’s compensation or Social Security. Usually, workman’s compensation only covers work-related accidents, and Social Security disability insurance – which is minimal – is available only if you’ve worked long enough and your disability prevents you from working for at least a year. Some employers offer disability income insurance, and you should probably take advantage of this. If you want to enhance your coverage – or don’t have the Permanent or Term? If you’re looking for affordable option through work – you may want to purchase an individual policy. There are a variety of plans available offering different coverage options; choose one that replaces at least 50%-70% of your income. A Win/Win Will As a single person, you may not immediately realize the importance of having a will. But you someday may want to leave possessions or assets to specific friends, charities or family members. A legal will naming your beneficiaries helps ensure that your legacy plan becomes reality, and can mitigate possible legal battles. Talk to your attorney about creating one. Planning for Your Retirement After you’ve ensured the financial protection you need today, it’s important to ensure your financial tomorrow by leveraging strategies that can help maximize growth. Tax deferral is one proven method. Your 401(k) or 403(b) plan at work may be the best place to start, especially if your company matches any part of your contributions. IRAs can also be an excellent choice – and your contributions may be tax deductible. continued on page 99 Don’t Dispair! REPAIR! OUR TOWN • JUNE 2006 – 84 – I N T H E S C H O O L S St. James Students are Winners of Lioness Essay Contest submitted by Ron Parmegiani Two fifth grade students from St. James Elementary School were the proud recipients of the coveted award that recognized them as “JUST SAY NO,” poster children. The Smithtown Lioness Club honored Evan Finger and Hannah Spates on May 2, 2006 for their diligent work in the infantile stages of wiping out the drug war that plagues our schools. The Smithtown Lioness Club conducts an annual essay contest to promote drug awareness. The two students feverishly composed essays competing with just shy of 400 other participants from the Smithtown and Kings Park School Districts. Each student was given the opportunity to read the words that they wrote resonating their commitment to remain drug free. Hannah Spates, Smithtown East Division third place winner, and Evan Finger, Smithtown East first place winner, were filled with nervous anxiety as they read their essays aloud to distinguished guests, parents, Lioness members and their peers. All of the essays contained similar messages, “Drugs Are A Drag,” the essay contest theme. St. James Elementary School and the community at large have something to be thrilled by – our youth have received the message that drugs will not allow them to soar and will only inhibit their fullest potential. Hannah Spates wrote: You have taken a hopeless chance. Angel dust does not give you an angel’s wings to fly up high in the sky; it will only give you a devil’s tail to sink down below the ground. It may give you a feeling of entering into a whole new wonderful world beyond the earth’s boundaries. But, when you really come back down to earth, you feel burnt out and horrible. Don’t let that addiction become your affliction because you are victim of their situation. Even Finger also took a tough stance on drugs: Mr. Michael Klee (left) and Mr. Ron Parmegiani (right back), are pictured with Lioness Essay Contest winners (lr) Evan Finger and Hannah Spates; also pictured is Evan’s twin sister, Sara. Now just remember, if you smoke, your goals in life will be set in flames. But, if you make the right choice, you can achieve your goals and live a longer and healthier life. Their words speak volumes as to the commitment that our community makes to ridding our streets of the harmful and adverse effects of drugs. Congrats to all of our winners. That evening, the Smithtown Lioness Club hosted a terrific Awards Dinner. We are confident that their commitment to our community is valued and the message is clear to the kids that they they will soon be our ‘future.’ Thanks and congrats again. Loretta had been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) during her last year in high school, and her parents were concerned that she might not get enough support once she got to college. The theme of independence and self-advocacy informs almost all of the articles I have been writing these past few months, but this anecdote demonstrates the concept in real terms. During our conversation, Loretta said something important about her capacity to perform well in school. She told her parents that they have been providing a crutch for her too often in the course of her educational career, and then Loretta said that she wanted the opportunity to fall off the crutches and get up on her own two feet using her own resources. Loretta’s parents responded admirably in the face of such a powerful and passionate declaration. Following further discussion, Loretta’s parents agreed to allow her to complete the rest of this academic year in high school without the “crutches.” It was a difficult, courageous and nurturing response, especially after such a somewhat painful, open and honest discussion between parents and daughter. At the end of the conversation, one parent mentioned Loretta’s disability, to which this intelligent and independent young woman responded adamantly, “I am not disabled” – yet another powerful and poignant statement. I was quite impressed by this family’s ability to come to terms with their differing opinions through a positive conversation that ultimately will become the start of the “letting go” process, a process that must take place between students and parents once the students have graduated from high school. Now, this story has a second lesson for us. Loretta’s parents noted that Loretta may not have all the resources within herself that she may need to succeed in school on her own. So we developed a plan that might help Loretta develop some of those resources before she leaves high continued on facing page IS YOUR TEENAGER STRUGGLING WITH TIME MANAGEMENT? We did not want to choose the conventional activities – reading novels and newspapers throughout the summer; keeping a journal; joining a book discussion group; practicing basic calculations – all of which can help, but Loretta needed something unconventional – or at least a different twist on the conventional ideas. Instead of keeping a journal, Loretta might write letters about her thoughts on current issues in the news – but these letters will be addressed to an imaginary child, an imaginary senior citizen, a grandparent, an uncle, any audience that will force her to change her use of language from one letter to another and to address the issues in terms of the interests of each type of audience. If Loretta does read any novels, she might imagine how she would stage the novel as a play or film; this exercise would encourage her to condense, summarize, find main ideas and interpret the major themes necessary to give the play some pith. Instead of balancing her checkbook using a computer or calculator, Loretta will balance it with good ol’ pencil and paper (remember that?). And I invited Loretta to correspond with me throughout the summer on how she is doing with these and other exercises we included in our new plan. The opportunity to correspond with someone who will provide regular responses to her ideas and reactions can help Loretta learn to revise her comments in writing, dig deep into issues, challenge her own opinions and clarify and substantiate her thoughts. Loretta and her family are discovering that her label as “disabled” is not helpful to Loretta. She may benefit from some accommodations in her first year N E W S in college, but this is a person who wants to eventually leave behind the world of accommodations. I have no doubt that she will not only develop new strategies for learning, but also uncover the resources that already exist within her. Similar to Loretta, students who struggle to learn can develop their own systems for organization and time management as long as they get the job done, so to speak. (well, according to Rodgers and Hammerstein, anyway). So, it only makes sense that when we diet we begin with 1 2 3. Yes, numbers! As in portions! We live in a ‘supersize it’ world and have lost all sense of reality when it comes to proper portion control. And, well, to be honest, when dieting, size does matter! So what is a proper portion, you may ask. Allow me to have the honor of satisfying your curiosity! Fats: Limit added fat to no more than 1-2 tablespoons per day. Fats should comprise approximately 20% of your daily caloric intake. (That’s 400 calories on a 2000 calorie/day diet!). Sugar: Limit added sugar to no more than 2-6 teaspoons. (That’s a total of 30-90 calories per day from added sugars; not the sugar in a piece of fruit!). Dairy products: A serving is one cup of milk (cow, soy, or rice), 1 cup of yogurt, 1/2 cup of cottage cheese, 1-1/2 ounces of natural or soy cheese or 2 ounces of processed cheese. Low-fat or non-fat dairy products are recommended (the full fat variety provides too much saturated fat and therefore extra fat calories). Aim for 3 servings per day! Weight Loss Weight Management Behavior Modification Post-partum Weight Loss Personalized Nutritional Guidance Fish, Meat, Chicken, Eggs, and Beans: One serving of fish, poultry or lean meat is 2-3 ounces. Therefore, up to 6 ounces of fish, poultry or lean meat is recommended per day. Other serving sizes are: 1/2 cup cooked beans, 1/2 cup tofu or tempeh, 1 whole egg or 2 egg whites, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, nuts or seeds. Generally, 60-80 grams of protein will suffice (this would be found in a total of 12-14 ounces of lean meat, or about four-six 15 ounce servings per day. One ounce of lean meat provides about 7 grams of protein). Try to limit eggs to 3 a week! Vegetables: One serving is 1 cup of raw vegetables or 1/2 cup cooked vegetables. A serving of vegetable juice is 1/2 cup. If you are going to overindulge, raw vegetables are for you. You definitely get the most bang for your buck here (you can even make a small non-fat yogurt dip to enjoy with your veggies). Have at least 4 or more servings per day. Breads, cereals, rice, pasta, or other starchy vegetables and carbs: One serving is 1 slice of bread, 1/2 of a bagel, bun or English muffin, 1 ounce (1/2-1 cup) ready-to-eat cereal, 1/2 cup cooked cereal, rice or pasta. Fruits: A serving of fruit is 1 medium sized whole fresh fruit, 1 cup of berries or a medium slice of melon; 1/2cup chopped, cooked, or canned fruit, 1/2 cup fruit juice. Try to stick to fresh fruit; it gives you the most fiber and often the least amount of sugar. Be sure your choice of fruit juice does not have added sugars. Avoid coconuts, olives and avocados; they are best considered as fats! Enjoy 3 servings of fruits a day! Always be sure to eat breakfast (studies show that breakfast eaters have a lower Body Mass Index than non-breakfast eaters), eat 56 mini meals throughout the day, and eat in response to hunger! Bocchichio Headache disorders account for about 120 million lost workdays per year in the U.S. alone. Controversy exists to explain the “mechanism” of all types of headaches, particularly cervicogenic headaches. Tension-type headaches account for 78% of all headaches and statistically, this includes the so-called “cervicogenic” headache. Because of the results we see in our offices treating headache, it seems almost all headaches can be related to biomechanical problems in the upper cervical spine, thus cervicogenic in origin. Past research and opinion has not agreed. However, recent research publications and conference presentations are starting to explain how our headache patients benefit from chiropractic treatment. The International Headache Society (IHS) recently published its second edition of headache classifications. Headaches are divided into primary and secondary. Primary headaches account for 95% of all headaches and are made up of Tension/Stress (78%) followed by Migraines (16%). The Secondary category of headaches only account for 6% of the total, which are related to an underlying pathology as in the case of the patient’s having a tumor. Dr. Nikolai Bogduk, in The Anatomical Basis of Cervicogenic Headache, explains: “By definition, cervicogenic headaches is a pain in the head whose source lies somewhere in the cervical spine.” Technically, a cervicogenic headache constitutes a particular form of referred pain from the cervical spine. The final product is always beautiful and exciting, but a lot of time and preparation goes into planning for the big day. All brides want everything to be perfect including their hair. A bride’s hair is her crowning jewel. After all, you could not have a banana split without the cherry on top! Achieving perfect hair may seem like a challenge, but can be very easy if you have an organized plan. Hair preparation is very important as a first step in achieving your ultimate goal of perfect hair. On your wedding day you want healthy, shiny hair. Your first step is consulting with your stylist on the status of your hair condition and what hair care products you should use. What you cleanse your hair with is extremely important. As a general rule it is not advisable to shampoo your hair before styling because it might become too slippery to handle. Different hair types require different shampoos. The elements of nature such as pollution, dirt, dust and sunlight increase the amount of damage in the hair. Using the proper conditioning treatment for weeks in advance will ensure you healthier, stronger, shinier hair. Mechanical damage on hair caused by blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons and also chemical over processing from coloring, highlighting and perming can leave hair weak, limp and damaged. If hair is severely damaged, you should start deep conditioning at least twice a week for 20 minutes. Make sure that you use styling products that you are familiar with because you might be allergic to something new. Having a good haircut is also essential in having a great wedding style. It will help to have some idea of what your hairstyle will be for the wedding because certain styles require certain lengths. Getting regular trims about once every four to six weeks is highly recommended. Your final trim should be about two weeks prior to the wedding, you don’t want to have too much of a “fresh cut” look. Experimenting with hair color just before your wedding is probably not the greatest idea. Your last coloring treatment should be continued on facing page NORTH COUNTRY DRY CLEANERS 430 N. If any changes need to be made there will be plenty of time. It is not recommended to change your hair color within two months of the wedding. The wedding gown will play a major role in deciding on a hairstyle. Your hair and gown should match in degree of formality. For example if you are getting married on a beach and shoes are an option than you might not want a very fancy and ornate type of up do. If you decide on a Vintage, Victorian, or Medieval look, a modern style with a sparkling tiara won’t do. Putting the hair up may not even be necessary. Try some fresh flowers and maybe some soft flowing tendrils or a formal braided style. A sleek French twist may be appropriate if your gown is more formal, modern or very conservative. Consider the neckline of the dress. If the neckline is fancy, a necklace or jewelry may not be necessary. If a gown were strapless wearing the hair down or half up would work perfectly. Now that you’re hair is in tiptop shape and you have chosen your gown it is time to consult on the updo style with your hairdresser. Your stylist needs to let you know how many trial do’s that you need to schedule. It is also a good idea to come in with a button down shirt on your wedding day. Make sure you decide on an updo style before you choose a veil or headpiece. Make sure that your hair will hold up at an outdoor wedding. Extensions or hairpieces might add volume or length if you need it. Your wedding day is the happiest day of your life. All of your friends and loved ones will have their eyes on you. Please remember that your hair is a frame for your face and can make or break your entire look. Now that you and your hair look spectacular you can happily say, “I do.” T I P S Editor’s Note: Dana Variello is employed as a colorist at Paul James Salon, 556 North Country Road, St. James.
