Principal Points
Known as Modern Learning Environments, opportunities now
exist to create more flexible learning spaces that reflect the
use of digital technologies and 21st Century learning. Mr Johl,
Deputy Principal and senior staff have visited new schools in
Auckland and the Bay of Plenty with a view to our future plans.
The use of digital technology in our curriculum is an
increasing aspect of our teaching practices. The New Zealand
Qualifications Authority (NZQA) are planning to digitally assess
all NCEA assessments (internal and external) from 2020, this
will require significant preparation by NZQA and schools in
order to achieve this goal. Digital technology is a significant
focus of staff professional learning this year with the Ministry
of Education and the Board of Trustees investing heavily in ICT
infrastructure. The number of students currently using devices
in class is increasing with the school planning to introduce
BYOD in the near future. The Board has also announced the
formation of an ICT Committee to support the future strategic
leadership of ICT and Digital technologies in the school.
Dear Parents and Caregivers
It is difficult to believe that our Year 11 to 13 students are
well over half way through their academic programmes. Our
internal examinations have recently been completed and
parents have had an opportunity to discuss the progress of
their sons and daughters at our parent/teacher interviews.
As students complete their internal assessments we are now
able to track the achievement of our senior students as they
continue their path towards gaining their NCEA qualification.
This information will be provided to students and parents on
a regular basis.
When school returns at the start of next term it will be business
as usual, however behind the scene the Board of Trustees and
staff are planning the next stage of building development
and the continued integration of digital technologies in our
teaching practices.
The Board has recently ratified our Capital works projects for
the next 5 years, which will include the following:
• Modernisation of Food Technology classrooms to include
facilities for teaching Hospitality courses.
• Construction of a new Careers and Pathways Centre, which
will replace existing prefabricated buildings at the front of
the school.
• Re-roofing B block
• Construction of a new Mathematics block which will
replace existing prefabricated classrooms
2
In early June a group of staff, parents and Board of Trustees
representatives met to discuss the formation of a Hillcrest High
School Sports Board. The formation of a Sports Board arose out
of last year’s consultation process in developing our strategic
plan. The Board will undertake a strategic focus in supporting,
developing, promoting and enhancing sport at the school.
This initial group will undertake the role of an establishment
committee, with the possibility of additions to this committee,
which will lead to the formation of the Sports Board.
Term 3 resumes on Monday 20th July. Once again a busy term
awaits as our students balance their studies with our extensive
co and extra-curricular programme.
Thank you for once again supporting our school and the wellbeing and achievement of your son’s and daughters.

Health Clinic
Winter is upon us so we need to be aware of some of the illness
and conditions around us at the time.
There are several illnesses out in the community at the
moment, so the holidays are a good time to get some rest and
recovery from some of the winter ailments.
Some things to be aware of are sore throats, some can lead to
streptococcus throat infection, measles, viral illnesses, head
lice, and scabies are some to be aware of. If you have any
concerns please do not hesitate to see your doctor.
It you eat well, (plenty of fruit and vegetable) drink water and
get plenty of sleep your bodies will love you for it.
If you have a child who has been vomiting within 24 hours of
school or has an illness that is contagious, please keep them
home as these bugs travel quickly. If students have on going
medical conditions or who are sick for long periods of time
we would expect that they are seen outside of school by the
family GP.
Mighty Mouth Dental - visits the Hillcrest High School each
term, if you do not want your child to see Mighty mouth then
please let the school nurse know.
Head Lice - are on the incrrease and the holidays are a great
time to please check children’s hair regularly and treat if these
are present, as they do spread quickly.

9JEEP - Year 9 Junior Extension and Enrichment Programme
Learning Retreat
The Learning Retreat for Hillcrest High School prospective
Junior Enrichment & Extension Programme (JEEP) students
took place on the 25th/26th May at the Hamilton Gardens. 61
students joined Ms Raleigh, Mrs Terry, Mr Sales, Mr Kennedy,
Ms Ingrid Rinsma and Former JEEP student Year 13 Todd Harper
for a varied programme of activities with the aim of creating a
stimulating and memorable experience for students.
Students were required to share and discuss ideas, be creative,
and work together.
Students who attended the learning retreat have been invited
to apply for JEEP for semester two. JEEP provides enrichment
and extension opportunities for academically able students.
It includes group work, discussion, problem-solving, thinking
outside the square, and working outside of one’s comfort zone.
The students were assisted and supported during the learning
retreat not only by the teachers and Todd Harper but also by a
remarkable group of Year 11 leaders, who were also all former
JEEP students. Kind thanks to them for their energetic and
enthusiastic guidance and leadership of our Year 9 prospective
JEEP students.

Staff - ‘Night in Asia’
Following on from last term’s Spanish Salsa Night, this term staff were invited to ‘A Night in Asia’. Firstly, there was a short
performance of Japanese Taiko Drumming, then staff got to test their skills under the close supervision of the Waikato team. After
all that exertion, staff then went to a Chinese restaurant where Ms Howard-Shi (our Chinese teacher) encouraged us to try some
authentic Chinese dishes.
Thank you to Akiyama-sensei, Ms Howard-Shi and the
Waikato Drummng team.

International
Camp
Our annual International Camp was in Rotorua this year. This
camp is an opportunity to introduce International Students
to different parts of New Zealand and for them to make new
friends.
Our first stop was to the beautiful Blue Springs, on the Te
Waihou Walkway, near Tirau. The springs are the source of
most of the bottled water sold in NZ and a considerable amount
of bottled water from the Blue Springs is exported. From the
springs we walked through beautiful farm land, complete with
curious cows.
Yuko Hasegawa, Reyna Ozawa and Manako Miyata
The next day was spent at Te Puia where we watched a cultural
performance and we then spent time at ‘Amaze Me’.
Year 13 International Student Amanda Wang recently travelled
with her mother and Aunty to Switzerland to look at Hotel
Management opportunities. She went to five campuses to
choose one for next year’s study. Amanda and her family had a
wonderful time, the students served them specially prepared
meals, drinks during the meals and they were offered cheese
and chocolates to taste. In the end, Amanda chose Cesar Ritz
because she felt it stood out as meeting her study needs and
the teachers and students were all very friendly.
Onuma Randhawa
After a picnic lunch at Lake Rotorua we went to the nationally
famous WingSpan. This is a sanctuary and display complex
for the rare native falcon, the Karearea. These small falcons
generally weigh less than 450 grams, are capable of flying
at speeds over 100 km/hr and can catch prey larger than
themselves. They are identified as a threatened species.

Concert
Our next major event was the International Concert. The theme
was ‘One Dream, One World, One Night’ and our talented
performers dramatically showed the cultural diversity of our
school. Before the concert, food stalls offered a delicious
assortment of treats.
Our school Kapahaka group started the evening in a stirring
manner followed by our Lion team. Then with the assistance
of our Cultural Captains our performers took us to Asia, the
Middle East, Europe, America and Australia before returning to
New Zealand. Our items were a fantastic mix of traditional and
modern and ended with the singing of our National Anthem.
International and ESOL students
have been involved this term in a
wide range of activities including
the mass planting of native trees
on Arbor Day, a trip to the lake
to feed the ducks and helping the
Year 9 Mandarin class in a cooking
competition. For the seniors it has
also been exam time.

Business Studies
On Tuesday 28th April the Level 3 Business Studies students
along with their teachers Mrs Terry and Mrs Gourdie set off to
visit Hobbiton just outside Matamata.
The purpose of the trip was to study how Hobbiton operated as
a business so that the students could apply business concepts
to a real life situation.
We all had a lovely day seeing the theory that we had studied
in class in real life business. Hobbiton more than met our
expectations as to how it should look from the movies.
The manager was extremely helpful in answering our prepared
questions and offering advice and help in the future by
providing email addresses. The students and teachers first sat
down at The Green Dragon Inn with their drink of cold ginger
beer in front of a roaring fire and from there to hear the
answers to their questions in a marquee close by.
Mrs Gourdie
HOD Business Stuidies
Our Year 12 Business Studies students are currently working on
writing a business plan and running their own business.
Some of the groups are working in collaboration with the Drama
department to provide interval refreshments for the patrons.
The delicious donuts and popcorn were very much appreciated
by the audience and performers alike. This collaboration works
perfectly for both departments allowing our Business Studies
students to run a small business with a community focus by
donating the profits to the drama department and releases the
drama staff to focus on their production without the pressure
of producing and serving refreshments.

Wellington Trip
Drama
Nationals
At 7am on Thursday the 29th May, 19 eager thespians along
with 4 teachers and myself hit the road for the annual trip to
Wellington for the Sheilah Winn National Shakespeare Festival.
After a lengthy 8 hour trip filled with much anticipated food
stops and tone deaf singing we arrived at our destination,
buzzing with excitement for what was to come over the next
few days!
We began our stay by attending the opening for the festival
where we were surrounded by fellow passionate thespian
students from around the country. The opening included various
tertiary tasters, followed by Shakespearian based workshops in
the afternoon where we engaged in a range of activities such as
learning about the history behind his infamous plays and how to
improve our acting skills using different methods, which we all
found to be extremely beneficial. The evening was concluded
with a hilarious performance at Circa theatre of the play “A
servant to two masters” which left us all in tears of laughter.
The next day saw us arrive at the historic St James theatre where
Michael Hockey and Giles Lusty performed their wonderful 5
minute scene of Othello up against 47 other schools who also
had a scene entered. There was tough competition for the
boys but they pulled off an excellent performance and most
definitely did Hillcrest proud! That night we attended another
performance at Bats theatre where we watched a snappy 50
minute play called Wings.
Our last day involved watching more Shakespeare scenes,
attending Weta workshops and also visiting the World War One
commemoration exhibit at Te Papa which was an incredibly
moving and eye opening for us all.
We would all like to thank Mrs Binks, Ms Cash, Mr Sales and
Mr Baxter for putting up with our teenage shenanigans and
accompanying us on this insightful and joyful experience.

Much Ado About Nothing
One of Shakespeare’s classic comedies sure went down a treat
this year. I’m sure everyone who came to watch this fantastic
play with plots and twists and laughs around every corner will
join me in giving the cast and crew a big congratulations for
their awesome efforts!
Yet again the ‘Famous in Hillcrest High School’ English teacher
Ms Pamment has outdone herself in directing a thoroughly
entertaining Shakespeare production, no amount of words can
stress how important she is and how much time and effort she
puts into making the Shakespeare productions a reality, so, on
behalf of everyone involved and everyone who came to watch
the play we thank you so sincerely.
A huge shout out goes to the audiences on each of the three
nights, their energy and involvement during the plays was
outstanding and the support we received was amazing with
every night sold out!
Once again Hillcrest’s theatre department maintained it’s very
high standards and we can’t wait to see what’s next!

There were powerful performances from Prapitha Reddy and

Writers Festival
On Wednesday the 29th of April, three senior teams went
to Southwell School to have some fun and show off their
‘booksmarts’ at the Waikato Secondary Schools’ Lit Quiz.
Together with several other Waikato schools, they battled
through rounds of questions from all different genres of
literature, with quick-fire questions for cash at the end of
each round. Congratulations to Amy Harrison, Islay McDougall,
Prapitha Reddy and Elizabeth Newton-Jackson, whose team
gained third place overall, only narrowly missing out to
Morrinsville and St Peter’s. Well done also to Caitlin McElligot,
Mary McElhinney, Harriet Plant, Emma Wardle, Zara Bowers,
Ella George, Nina Hennig and Maya Jackson-Liew who managed
to grab a few of the extra prizes.
A large group of students attended the Secondary Schools Day
at the Auckland Writer and readers Festival at the Aotea Centre

wins and losses.
This year the line-up included Natalie Haynes a comedienne
and writer who focussed on comedy of Greek tragedy, Laurie
Halse Anderson and American writer dealing with contemporary
social issues for teenagers, Australian Morris Gleitzman
speaking about his new work about an ANZAC war horse and
Anthony Horowitz author of the ‘Young Bond ‘ series.

Japanese Trip to Auckland
Spanish Alfombras
For Japanese, Year 10 went to Auckland and visited the
Consulate General of Japan. There the students had a seminar
on Japanese culture. They watched videos, touched the
famous Japanese plastic food samples and wore Kimono. We
had authentic Japanese food for lunch then enjoyed some
shopping at the Japan Mart.
Year 10 students explored Hispanic Culture by creating their
own version of “alfombras.” These are sawdust or chalk
carpets, from Central America, traditionally used to decorate
the streets before a procession. They have existed since the
15th Century and are still used today.
Everybody had a fantastic SUGOI experience through this trip.
Next event for Japanese is the Japanese Trivia Qiuz Night held
at the University of Waikato on 19 June. Two teams of junior
students are going to compete against the students from other
schools in Waikato.
Junior Japanese Trivia Championships
The Championships were held on the 19th June at the University
of Waikato. 11 teams from 5 schools in the region participated
and Hillcrest sent two teams of Year 9 and Year 10. All of the
questions were about the fact files of Japan and its culture in
six categories. There was a big heat among the teams.
Unfortunately both of our teams did not get any places.
However, the participating students had a wondeful time
with the yummy refreshments and enjoyed talking with the
volunteer students from the university. We will be back there
again next year to fight back!
French Film Festival
This term Year 13 French students have completed a film
study of “Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain.” They made
speeches about the film as part of their NCEA assessments and
many students went to see some of the films on offer at the

Rock Band
Hillcrest Year 9 rock band “Nevada” progressed through two
rounds of the 2015 National Rockquest competition. This is
an amazing result for such a young band, as many bands do
not progress further than the first round. Mr Jamie Strange
from Berkley Normal School, one of Hillcrest High School’s
feeder schools, has coached Nevada. This group has significant
potential and you will be hearing a lot about them in the future.
Jazz Band
The jazz band, under the baton of Mr Isaac Krandal-Tanner, is
preparing for the Waikato Band and Festival, which take place
at the Waikato University’s Gallagher center of performing Arts
on Friday the 28th of August. This is a high profile celebration
of jazz band, orchestra and percussion ensembles that
represent the best of the Waikato’s secondary music students.
The Hillcrest orchestra will also be competing at the Festival.
The jazz band had a successful time at the Easter jazz band
competitions in Tauranga and received some valuable coaching
from Dr Roger Fox. The jazz and concert band from Pukekohe
High School will visit Hillcrest on the 18th of August to hold
workshops and perform with the Hillcrest Jazz band which will
be good preparation for the upcoming Festival.
Jazz Band performing at the Tauranga jazz festival
Both the Jazz band and the orchestra preformed at a lunchtime
concert for visiting Kiwitahi school in week 10. The primary age
students from Kiwitahi really enjoyed the music performed by
the orchestra and jazz band, and one student even had the
opportunity to conduct the orchestra.

has also been a huge amount of EOTC conducted throughout all
the Science departments.
Level 2 Students spent a night in Pureora national park and
spent their time looking at the wonderful example of the

Biology students have seen many parts or the wonderful flora
and fauna that makes New Zealand so unique. From the pristine
streams that flow off mount Pirongia and comparing these to
the urban streams that are found in many of our city parks.
Finally the L3 class spent a day frolicking in the mud in the

of Mangroves in preparation for their investigation into the
unique adaptive features that allow the Mangrove to occupy
such a hostile habitat.

Science
Biology is not the only subject to have all the fun. Level 3 Earth
and Space Science spent the day up at Auckland investigating
the numerous volcanos that exist in our largest city. The
trip included riveting exploration of the Auckland Museum
Volcanoes section where students learnt about the Auckland
Volcanic Field (AVF) hot spot and the rocks associated with
it. Later students headed out to Mt Eden when they climbed
to the summit and took in breath-taking panoramic views of
the AVF including Rangitoto Island. On the way home students
experienced the right of passage of eating an Ice cream and
buying some bacon in Pokeno.
300 Level 1 Science students just recently embarked on their
field trip to Taupo, where they looked at many of the geothermal
features that are present in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. These
ranged from the mighty Caldera volcano that contains Lake
Taupo to the bubbling mud pools and stinking fumaroles of the
Craters of the Moon Park. Students also got to experience their
hand at prawn fishing as we visited the prawn park and the
saw how the park used the excess geothermal water from the
power plant next door to heat their prawn ponds.
Physics students have had the chance to experience amazing
and insightful lectures as part of the Osbourne lecture day at
Waikato University. Students came away from that day with
enthusiasm and an appreciation for Physics. L3 Students are
eagerly awaiting the unit of work on amusement park physics,
which culminates with the students getting a chance to
experience the many forces and physical principles they learn
about, with a trip to Rainbows End in Term 4.

Our chemistry students have been experiencing many practical
sessions with the Level 2 Chemists conducting and perfecting
the art of titrations and the Level 3 students working hard to
master the Redox reactions and equations.
The Junior Science classes have been extremely busy, with
a huge number of students taking up the opportunity to
participate in Science Badges. This is where students choose an
area of science that they are interested in and complete a series
of tasks to earn themselves a Science badge. A congratulations
is to go out to Isabella Jackson, whom has already earned a
badge in large animal Science.

As part of the 100th anniversary
commemorations of the ANZAC Landings,
Hillcrest High was sent 30 white crosses
to turn into a Field of Remembrance. We
were also given 28 random service men
from World War I, as well as a nurse and
an unknown soldier.
A Year 10 Social Studies class, 10TR,
were given the chance to put the crosses
together and do a little bit of research into
the various soldiers using the Cenotaph
website run by the Auckland Museum.
Amongst the 30 names included an All
Blacks captain and a young boy who faked
his age. The student’s also started to look
up some of their own family members who
served in World War I and other conflicts
New Zealand has participated in.
The Field of Remembrance was positioned
on a section of grass outside the library
and student services office and was left
out for three days in the lead up to ANZAC
Day to give the whole school a chance to have a look at it. It was great to see students and staff pause to take a moment to read
the names of those who served their country and made the ultimate sacrifice.
With three more years of World War I commemorations still to go, the History Department plans to put the crosses out again to
give the students of Hillcrest High another chance to remember the sacrifice people made 100 years ago.

As part of a Human Rights topic, two Year 10 Social Studies
were given the opportunity to get a first-hand account of
survivors of the Genocide against Tutsi and Moderate Hutu in
Rwanda in 1994.
Three survivors, Peter Ntaganda, Egide Mutabaze and Marie
Ingabire, were very willing to share their respective stories
and the journey of their country through the genocide and
into the reconciliation period that has been taking place in
Rwanda since 1994. One of the survivors was saved, along with
several others, by the headmaster of his school, while another
survived by hiding quietly in their home for the duration of the
genocide.
All three stressed the importance of never allowing a tragedy
like this to happen again. They also talked thoroughly about
the process Rwanda has taken to reconcile the perpetrators
and victims, and to remove the words Hutu and Tutsi and just
call themselves Rwandese, a brave and noble path.
The content that the students have been covering was put into
perspective by the presence of these 3 survivors. After a term
of learning about this topic from various books and statistics,
they were now able to get a first-hand account from people
who were there and are actively rebuild their country. This
was a once in a life time opportunity.

Careers
Year 11 Prizes for Career Planning!
For many students (and their parents!), career decision-making can be quite a stressful area. Recently,
the Hillcrest High School Careers team trialled an innovative new online career exploration tool called
‘Bulls-Eye’ which has been designed and developed for Kiwi teens. (www.bulls-eye.co.nz). Based on
the quality of content, the Centre has invested funds into making this resource available to all our current Year 11 students for the next three years.
This tool provides a unique opportunity for young people to assess and explore a broad range of
career options in an engaging and low pressure way. It also provides them an opportunity to assess
their interests, skills and strengths as well as consider the current demand for different occupations.
Your child has been sent an introduction to ‘Bulls-Eye’ with log-in instructions (to their school email
address). Parents/caregivers have also been sent emails containing back-up information so that they
can support their teens. While we do encourage personal involvement and accountability in students,
many will appreciate some open conversation and support. It is not expected that students would
necessarily make definite career decisions at this stage, but ‘Bulls-Eye’ can certainly help guide them
towards a range of suitable options. Because the resource will be available for three years, students
will be able to review and refine their responses progressively towards the formation of more definite
plans. It will also be referred to during career guidance appointments at school.
‘Bulls-Eye’ can provide useful guidance in the 2016 subject choice process coming up next term.
To encourage Year 11 engagement, there will be a prize draw immediately after the subject choice
submission deadline, with winners announced on the Hillcrest High School Careers Centre Facebook
page.
If your emails have not been received, please contact the Careers Centre on 857 -0297 ext. 843 or via
FB page.

Digital Technology
The Year 10 programming classes in the Digital Technology
department have been learning Robotics. Students have
been tasked to build the robot then program it to complete
the RoboCup Rescue course, which involves following a line,
navigating obstacles and rescuing the item from a chemical
spill.
Departments
MaterialsTechnology - Fabrics
The students have thoroughly enjoyed this task and successful
teams will be invited to take part in the Waikato Regional
RoboCup competition. The Rescue course is just one of the
categories students can enter in the competition. This is going
to be hosted at Hillcrest High School on the 15th of August and
is the first time the competition is being held in the Waikato.
Year 9 students in Material Technology Fabrics have been having
fun designing and making their zipper critters. The students
have used 4 different fabrics to create their own unique
character. A colourful array of crazy creatures have been made
in the last 6 weeks.
Hillcrest Support Team - HST
The Hillcrest Support Team (HST) will be better known to
many of you as the Anti-Harassment Team or AHT. The name
change this year was decided on by the group to reflect their
evolving role in the school. Started originally to help combat
bullying and harassment, the Year 13 students were trained to
provide mediations in situations of conflict and minor bullying.
However in recent years, the team has grown in numbers and
their role has become one with a wider more positive focus.
The HST, as it is now known, continue to provide mediations
but also offer mentoring and support to younger students and
organise activities and events to discourage bullying and to
foster and maintain a friendly and caring school community.
Promoting ‘Pink Shirt Day’ - an international day against
bullying - was a recent event where students and staff were
encouraged to wear pink to promote the “speak up, stand
together, stop bullying” message.
They also help to run a lunchtime games and activities day on Fridays in R16. Other activities are planned during the school year.
HST members are happy to be approached for help or a friendly chat around the school and are easily identified in their unique
hoodies. Mentoring or mediations can be organised through Guidance or directly with the HST.

Great Barrier Experience
In collaboration with the Hillary Outdoors Education Centre
on Great Barrier Island we have shaped a 5 week course that
melds the delivery of the New Zealand Curriculum with a
combination of outdoor activities and studies revolving around
the principles of sustainability.
Students are supervised by a mixture of Hillcrest High School
staff and Hillary Outdoors instructors. Under their expert
guidance the students undertake 2-3 day expeditions and a
range of outdoor activities including coasteering, high ropes
course, sailing, sea kayaking, surf kayaking, tramping, steep
creeking, fishing, snorkeling, gardening and adventure based
learning.
They undertake a cross-curricular study of cultural, economic,
environmental and social sustainability, interacting during
the process with the local tangata whenua, business owners,

Congratulations to Georgia Williams, 1st X1 goalie, who has
been selected from the Joey World Cup tournament to be part
of a training squad currently training in Germany with different
coaches from all over the world.
The 1st X1 Boys have had a few close losses recently, so the great
win against Trident recently was rewarding. Sasha Wallbank
and Kris Nebesky each scored classic goals, the team holding
out for the entire second half to end the National Qualifier 2-0.
Excellent keeping by Mark Docherty to keep Trident scoreless.
Congratulations to coach Josh Groom as well - has been a few
years since Hillcrest won a qualifier.

Hockey
The five hockey teams at Hillcrest have made a good start to
the hockey season:
1st X1 Girls - Made the Final of the Waikato Secondary Schools
A Grade competition losing to Waikato Diocesan.
1st X1 Boys - Made the playoff for 3rd in the Waikato Secondary
Schools A Grade competition
With six Year 9 and 10 players, Hillcrest 1st X1 Boys, captained
by Estian Eshuis, we have at times been faced with far more
experienced teams but the boys have competed well. We have
some exciting talent coming through.
Both teams will now compete in the Midlands Intercity
Competition in the 1st Division.
2nd X1 Girls - Currently 5th Place in B Grade
2nd X1 Boys - Currently 7th Place in D Grade
3rd X1 Girls - Currently 10th in D Grade
The Girls’ 1st X1, after a slow start in their semi against Sacred
Heart (1-1 at half time), kicked into gear to outscore the
opposition 4-1 in the 2nd half and be ahead 5-2 as the final
whistle sounded.
Alyesha Elmer, in only her second season in goal, has really
stepped up this year and kept Hillcrest in the game. Nicola
Aldridge had an outstanding game setting up 2 goals with very
accurate passes through the congestion and unlucky not to have
a third. Olivia Yung organised the back very well, while Acacia
Kelsen notched up 2 second half goals to score a hat trick.

Jana Kivell and Kate Thomson were selected for the New
Zealand U14 and the Junior Womens Teams. While Diego
Waksman was selected in the U12 Team New Zealand Team.
Our top team won came 1st in the Waikato Division 1 competition
and the Tornadoes came 2nd in Division 2.
Acacia Kelsen, Year 12
Olivia Yung, Year 11
Approximately 50 students are involved in inline hockey at
Hillcrest High School which has continued to develop during
the first half of 2015. This year is the first time Hillcrest has
entered two teams in the A Division of the Secondary Schools
League.
Term 3 Hillcrest will enter three teams in the B Division for
the first time. This reflects the work and effort put in by the
students as skaters to improve in skill and understanding of the
game. Hillcrest is in the enviable position of having three goal
tenders, few school have even one.
Of particular note is a team of Year 9 students entered into
B Division who are playing a well-structured and disciplined
game.
I wish to thank student coaches - Pip Eddy and Laura Thresher
for their work during the early part of this year. Also those
who stepped up and took referee roles in the Secondary School
League - Sam Harris, Laura Thresher, Jana Kivell and Diego
Waksman. Other Hillcrest students are assisting in the Primary/
Intermediate Schools grade.
This demonstrates how healthy In-Line Hockey is at Hillcrest
High School and it is with anticipation that I look forward.

the potential to go a very long way. She combined well with
Emmerson Houghton to intimidate the Sacred Heart shooters
forcing them to shoot at 59% and 37%.
For Hillcrest, Fiesola Puamau shot at 85% and rebounded
outstandingly as well.
Joshua Martinsen, Year 10
Squash
On thursday, 18 June, students competed in the Waikato

were ranked, which meant our youngest player, Dion Morgan,
was up against seniors.
Hillcrest dominated the final six minutes of the game scoring

Rugby
Sport
Rugby is well underway at Hillcrest High School with the four
teams once again this year.
The U14 team have great numbers in 2015 and are very keen
which will benefit them throughout the year. Although yet to
notch up a win the boys narrowly went down to Raglan U14s
and Hamilton Boys High School.
The U15 team have a mix of experienced players from last
years U14 team and some new players. They also have had
some very close losses to Hamilton Boys High School and Forest
View. A huge thanks must go to Principal Kelvin Whiting and Yr
9 Dean Ben Kennedy who jumped in to coach the team when
we could not find a coach.
The 2nd XV for the first time in years have huge numbers with
a squad of 27 students. This aim of this team is to prepare the
students for the 1st XV in future years. Under the coaching
of teacher Mr. Dave Kallaher they are well on their way of
achieving this. Playing a number of 1st XV’s from around the
Waikato they are performing very well.
The Montana Catering 1st XV has had a very successful start
to the season and is currently top of the table in the Warren
Gatland Trophy Division. After a tough start against Taumarunui
where the boys escaped with a 12 all draw and a number of
injuries including a season ending broken jaw to Manafa Niurou
the team has had strong wins over both Forest View and St
Johns’.

Rowing 2015/2016 season
Planning is well underway for the start of the new rowing
season. New rowers will get the opportunity to register their
interest at the start of next term with try-out days planned
early in the term. Winter training has already begun for existing
rowers.
This season Dr Brett Smith, Senior Lecturer, Department
of Sport and Leisure, University of Waikato will oversee the
school’s rowing programme and will lead a coaching team
comprising staff members Miss Chloe Macfarlane, Mrs Jude
Smith and Miss Annabel Rowlands, Mr Brent Whiting (parent)
and former Hillcrest student Miss Loveday Yeoman. The
Hillcrest High School Rowing Club, under the leadership of Blair
Wright work hard to effectively organise, manage and resource
rowing at the school. Last season we had a total of 36 rowers
and coxswains, which was a combination of boys and girls from
novice (first year) to senior rowers. Our rowers have achieved
considerable success at regional, North Island and National
(Maadi Cup) regattas in the past and we are confident of this
success continuing in the future.
