Principal Points
School sport is a significant component of the lives of many of
our students with large numbers of staff, parents and members
of the school community participating and supporting our
extensive extra-curricular programme. We continue to have
success at local, regional and national level, as the reports from
winter tournament week will testify. We also want as many of
our students as possible to be engaged in sport and to enhance
our current sports facilities. This is an exciting development
for the school and the Board looks forward in engaging further
with our community.
We are well into our planning for next year, with enrolments and
subject choice well underway, we are looking at our timetable
and staffing requirements. I will also begin the process of
establishing our school targets and goals for the following year.
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Where has the year gone? I’m sure the years go by faster with
age, and this year is no exception.
When term 4 resumes on Monday 12th October, there will only
be three and a half weeks until the seniors depart for their NCEA
examinations, with Senior Prize giving being held on Monday
2nd November at the Founders Theatre. It is critical that
students use these final few weeks before their examinations
wisely. Staff will be offering tutorial opportunities, further
assessment opportunities and the final information that will
be necessary to confidently enter the examinations. This is
also the time of the year when we celebrate the successes of
the year with a succession of evening events. These are listed
in the newsletter, and I would encourage you to attend these
events, particularly those that involve your son or daughter.
A group of staff and parents have been working on establishing
a Hillcrest High School Sports Board. The composition of the
Board and the selection process for membership of the Board
will be announced next term, however the establishment group
have decided that the Board Mission Statement will be “To add
value to Sport at Hillcrest High School” with specific functions
under the following headings

Fundraising to assist codes, individuals and projects to enhance sport at the school

With the winter sports season completed and student
achievements recognised at code prizegivings, I would like to
thank the many staff, parents, caregivers and members of our
school community who devote such a huge amount of their
time, on a voluntary basis, to coach, manage, administer and
support our extensive extra-curricular programme. Our extracurricular programme, and I also include the Arts and Culture,
play a significant role in the life of our school and add real
value to the lives of our students.

APPOINTMENT OF NEW DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
The Board of Trustees are pleased to announce the appointment
of Mr Ronan Bass to the position of Deputy Principal.
Mr Bass is currently Deputy Principal at Green Bay High
School in Auckland and begins at Hillcrest High on Thursday
5th November. Mr Bass has a Bachelor of Science from the
University of Limerick in Ireland and a Postgraduate Diploma
in Educational Leadership and Management from Unitec
in Auckland. Mr Bass has current responsibilities at Green
Bay for Professional Learning and Development, Director of
Professional Inquiry and Student Achievement Manager. Mr Bass
has experience in Digital Technologies and related pedagogies,
data management, particularly to inform and strengthen
teaching practices, Appraisal and Professional Standards, Maori
Achievement, Curriculum design and Pastoral Care.
We are looking forward to welcoming Mr Bass to our school
later in the term.
Farewell to Mr Johl
At the end of term 3 we farewelled Mr Edgar Johl, our Deputy
Principal.
Mr Johl joined our staff in 2008, initially as Assistant Principal
and then as Deputy Principal taking over from long serving
Deputy Principal Mr Brugh. Over the last 7 years Mr Johl has
made a significant impact on our school.
As well as taking care of the day to day running and organisation
of the school, Mr Johl has significant portfolio’s which included
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L), Senior Student Leaders,
Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) and Health and Safety.
He is a member of the Board of Trustees Property Committee
and works along-side Mrs Wenham in developing the school
building and property plan. Mr Johl’s influence in the school’s
building programme and environment is clearly evident,
with the most recent being the upgrade of B, C and D block
courtyards.
Throughout his time, Mr Johl has developed the senior student
leadership programme, which now includes the annual trip
to Great Barrier Island, while our school assemblies have
a distinctive student focus. He has worked with Mrs Hart in
promoting our school through developments in the newsletter
and school magazine. Mr Johl frequently attends school events
and is well known in the community. He has made a huge
impact with sport, assisting Mrs Priscott as the senior leader
responsible for sport and of course as a successful rugby
coach and, in particular, the Ist XV. Despite his busy job, Mr
Johl always enjoys teaching his Physics class and is a keen
participant in the Science Faculty.
One of Mr Johl’s greatest attributes is his ability to relate to a
range of people – staff, students, parents and members of the
community. He is approachable, has a great sense of humour
and is exceedingly hard working. He has high standards and
expectations which are uncompromising. He always makes time
to talk and listen and can be compassionate and understanding
when the need arises. Mr Johl is respected by all who know
him.

Mr Johl was instrumental in establishing the Senior Student
Leaders camp and the Year 10 camps at Great Barrier Island.
Mr Johl was a key member of our Senior Leadership Team and
a valued friend and colleague. He will be dearly missed, but
he leaves Hillcrest High School and education having given his
complete dedication to the profession for over 30 years.
We wish Mr Johl and his wife Felicity all the very best for the
future.

Science Fair
NZ Programming Competition
Congratulations to all the Science Fair participants 2015.
This year we entered six teams in the secondary schools
category of the National Programming Competition held at
Waikato University on August 8th.
The following students participated in the Science Fair this
term and I am extremely pleased with the effort students have
put into their projects. The results has been great, well done!

Three Hillcrest teams competed in the Waikato Secondary
School Theatresports Finals at the Waikato University.
Our Junior Team came 3rd, one of our Senior Teams also came
3rd and our very own Take A Hill Pill Team swept up 1st place
by a very close 2 points, securin gthe shield for Hillcrest for
another year. Congratulations to all three teams.

the 4 prizes. The ‘Top Team’ award won by Team Bangladesh - a
team of first timers to the competition - last years champions
were Olivia Maxwell, Emily Scrimgeour and Leina TuckerMasters. The other prize went to Team NZ for ‘Best Team
Speech’
Maths Winners
All teams were very impressive in both their behaviour and
debating skills, so much so that Akanksha, Sneha, Ryan N, Ryan
B, and Nisha were invited to speak on Free FM’s ‘Cosmopolitan
News and Views’.

The annual Waimaths quiz competition was held at the Hamilton

Music Festival Winners
Amnesty Concert
The orchestra and jazz band competed in August at the
regional ITM Orchestra and Band Festival held at the Gallagher
Performing Arts Centre.
The Hillcrest High chapter of Amnesty International held
a concert in August to raise awareness about issues ranging
from water scarcity and water pollution to water privatisation
and wars over scant water resources. The proceeds from the
concert were donated to water.org, an international charity
working on providing clean water and sanitation across many
continents.
The Orchestra were awarded a Gold Plus Award, only two other
schools in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty were awarded this top
level award.
The Jazz Band was awarded a Silver Award, which is a great
achievement as they have a number of young instrumentalists.

The year 9 Early Start to Qualifications class have spent Term
3 conducting investigations into contemporary issues such
as online bullying, food safety, animal welfare and the link
between money and happiness.

Health Clinic
The health clinic have three school nurses who job share; they
are here to see the students who are sick or injured at school.
Students can be seen at interval and lunch and during class
time if urgent, all students are expected to see their class
teacher for a pass to come to the clinic if it’s necessary
during class time.
The clinic has a Doctor who comes in on a Thursday morning
from 9-12 to also see students who are unable to access a
doctor outside of school hours.
The clinic also has a physiotherapist who runs two clinics a
week on Tuesday and Friday.
Our school policy is to advise parents/ care givers of any major
illness or injury that has happened at school, a head injury is
considered serious and in this case the nurse will phone the
Parent / care giver. We will not bother you for something we
consider to be minor; however we expect that your child would
advise you if they have been to see the school nurse. When
students are unwell and need to go home the nurse will always
contact a parent /caregiver to get permission for your child to
go home.
We want to provide a good service here at the health clinic, so
if your child develops any medical conditions that we should
be aware off, can you please let us know so we can keep the
records up to date.
If there are changes in contact details can the school please be
updated as we often have incorrect phone numbers, making it
extremely difficult to contact parents/ care givers.
If you have a child who has been vomiting within 24 hours
of school or is generally unwell, please keep them home as
these bugs travel quickly. If students have on going medical
conditions or who are sick for long periods of time we would
expect that they are seen outside of school by the family GP.
Head lice – please check children’s hair regularly and treat if
these are present as they do spread quickly.
VISION TESTING for YEAR 10’s – year 10’s will have their vision
tested in term 4.
It you eat well, (plenty of fruit and vegetable) drink water and
get plenty of sleep your bodies will love you for it.

Environment Council
As part of Hamilton City Councils gully restoration community volunteers have planted thousands of native trees and shrubs to
encourage native birds back into our city.
Hillcrest Highs Environment Captain, Sneha Chatterjee and members of the Environment Council have been helping to restore the
Mangakotukutuku Gully and Stream, Sandford Park, Fitzroy.
School Ball
The annual ball was held this term on Saturday, 1 August. This year the
theme was ‘The Last Hour’.

The annual House Relay held in August on a course around the school grounds. Congratulations to winning House - Te Puea
Equality Day
Equality Day was a huge success with even the weather playing
ball. Students were able to play a game that highlighted the
challenges faced by minorities in society, and could sign a
pledge to end discrimination in our community.

Sir John Kirwan
The former All Blacks winger is touring the country as an ambassador for Westpac, talking about depression. He spoke to Year 13
students on 3 September. JK is well-known for his work on diminishing the stigma around suffering from depression.
A very charismatic speak, JK had two fundamental messages: that depression is an illness, not a weakness - and he doesn’t want
any more suicides.

This year 9BH offered to help raise funds for the Cancer Society by selling daffodils and holding a bake sale. Many of them showed
great entrepreneurial and marketing skills, and they raised $379.50 on the day!

Year 11 Career Planning
At lunchtime on September 11 we enjoyed a successful Market
Day arranged by the Year 10 Enterprise Studies classes. The
school community was given a chance to buy their range of
products. This was able to happen after several weeks of
learning how to set up a business, run it, produce a product
and successfully market it.
Many students have test-driven the new Bulls-Eye career
exploration programme launched last term and feedback
is positive so far! On the first day of term four we will be
announcing the winners of our prize draw. We have allowed an
extension over the holidays to provide students time to explore
the programme after a very busy term’s work.
There were approximately 15 stalls selling products including;
cupcakes, fudge, sherbet, candy floss, lemonade, brownies,
games, popcorn and hot chocolate. The weather was in our
favour and lots of customers braved the crowds to add to an
electric and exciting atmosphere. Much to their delight many
businesses made profits.

Arts Festival
It has been another exciting year for HHS theatresports teams,
with all three superb teams getting to the Waikato Secondary
Schools Theatresports finals.
On Monday 7th September at the Academy of Performing Arts
concert chamber, the teams all played exceptionally well, with
strong scenes and hilarious physicality to add to their quick
wit. The junior team ‘Stuffed Crest’ and the senior B team
‘Cresty Crab’ both gained third place, while the senior A team
‘Take a Hill Pill’ won first place!
2015 Arts Festival was a great success with events ranging from
‘Last Supper’ re-enactments and storytelling to theatresports
madness! A big thank you to everyone who got involved and
supported this fantabulous week. We had some wonderful
music performances by our talented students and teachers.
Congratulations to all our teams and a big thank you to our
cheerleading squad who came to support us both at the finals
and throughout the year.

We would like to thank our special guests the Austin-Tennant
family and our ex-student Phum Siritip for performing in
numerous events. Another thank you to The Arts Faculty, the
Arts Coordinator- Santhriga Krishnan, the superb Arts Council
for their help and last but not least the brilliants Arts CaptainsBreanna Swales and Giles Lusty for bringing the whole thing

Year 12 drama production
This term level 2 drama spent many hours
rehearsing this contemporary play for their class
assessment. ‘Greenland’ was a challenging text for
this year level as it refers to current environmental
issues and involved a range of characters and
technologies such as the 6 metre wide projected
images.
We were pleased to be able to show off the talents
of this large cast, as they worked on realistic
characters, precise timing and many scene
transitions. The students should be delighted
with their efforts as they put so much energy and
thought into the performance. Well done, we are
so proud of you!

Our 10 Pin Bowling evening and dinner at Joe’s Garage was a very popular event for over 40 International and ESOL Students and
teachers. For many it was the first time bowling and others were able to get an impressive number of strikes. We ended the
evening with a variety of pizzas for all.

Mayoral Welcome held in the Hamilton
City Council Chambers where she spoke
of her experiences at a New Zealand high
school.
Following on from their adventures and Bungy jumping last
year, Amanda and Yolanda spent a weekend at Mount Ruapehu
with International Students from a number of Waikato schools.

Reyna and Yuko volunteered their help with the national
Daffodil Day charity collection. Their smiles and friendly
manner helped raise a large amount for the Cancer Society.

Spelling Bee
In August Hillcrest High School hosted this year’s Regional round
of the NZ Spelling Bee competition. Around 35 keen spellers
from the region attended this exciting event in our library.
Hillcrest was represented terrifically by five students.
Getting through to the Regionals meant Sophia Chen, Lujane
Shabbir, Gabriel Pan, Jackson Blewden and Ananya Gupta are
among the top 215 spellers in the country. A tense and nailbiting competition, all students participated in a written round
initially then on to a thrilling oral knock out round.
Although none of our students made it through to the finals
this year, it was a great experience and they all learned new
words they will now have for life, particularly the word they
got out on!
After a busy term the annual Shared Lunch was very welcome
with students inviting a teacher, bringing a meal to share and
acting as host for the occasion. The company was great and the
food delicious.

Junior Debating
2015 has been a fantastic year for Junior Debating. Twenty
seven Year 9 and 10 students have taken part in a regional
junior tournament at HBHS every fortnight over the last 3
terms. They have debated a wide range of topics, including
issues such as arming the police, plastic bag use in NZ and
technology use in NZ schools. Students have learned valuable
skills in public speaking as well as how to think on their feet and
structure an argument. Congratulations to all junior debaters
and particularly to Gabriel Pan, Adam Nachowitz, Daniel
Stokes, Scott Faville and Jonah Franke-Bowell who made it
through to the finals against Diocesan School for Girls. This was
a huge achievement. Although they narrowly lost, missing out
on the trophy, there is obviously a bright future for debating at
Hillcrest High School.

This term we celebrated International Languages Week with
a great variety of activities to recognise the many different
languages that our students speak, or are learning.
French crêpes
Spanish Day
Spanish Day was a fiesta of piñatas and dancing. French Day
included a very competitive spelling bee and delicious crêpes,
with many staff and students coming dressed in berets or the
French colours of bleu, blanc, rouge.

For Chinese Day students tried on traditional Chinese costumes
and had a go at some Chinese martial arts. There was also a
special screening of Shakespeare in Chinese which can now be
seen on the school website (http://www.hillcrest-high.school.
nz/news.cfm).
On Japanese Day there were chopstick games, quizzes,
calligraphy and kimono trials.

Each day there were also multi-lingual compliments posted
around the school for students to give to their friends.
The final Friday was a celebration of all the languages spoken
at Hillcrest High School. There was a language speed-dating
activity at lunchtime, where students had two minutes to learn
or teach a phrase in a language other than English.

The music department has had a very successful term 3.
Orchestra
On Friday 28th of August both the Hillcrest High School jazz
band and orchestra performed at the Waikato Itinerant Music
Scheme band festival, held at the Waikato University Gallagher
Performing Arts Center.
Previous music student and Cultural Captain in 2013, Phum
Siritip performed at assembly and the annual SCAT jazz choir
performace during Arts week. He is now signed to a record
label in Thailand where he lives and is achieving great success.
We wish him all the best.
Under the music direction of Dr Martin Griffiths, the Hillcrest
High School Orchestra were given a Gold Plus award for their
performance - there were only two other schools in the
Waikato and BOP that were given this prestigious award in the
Orchestral-Symphonic category.
This is an outstanding achievement as Dr Griffiths was only
appointed orchestral director at the beginning of 2015. The
orchestra is continuing to grow and the 2016 year 9 students
are invited and encouraged to join.
SCAT, Hillcrest High School’s Jazz choir, held their annual
concert recently and were raising funds for their international
tour of Singapore and Malaysia over the term three break.
The concert was very successful and showcased a number
of talented students. Assistant principal and SCAT musical
director Susan Radford has done a wonderful job of producing
and presenting an exciting concert programme.
Jazz Band
The jazz band, under the baton of Hillcrest High School
teacher Isaac Crandell-Tanner, were awarded a credible Silver
award. The jazz band have been working hard to develop their
sound and stage presence throughout the year and this is a
deserved award. Plans are already underway for the jazz bands
involvement in the 2016 Tauranga Jazz Festival during Easter
weekend and more concert events.

Hillcrest High School student Danni Corpuz attended the
Zeal music conference in Auckland recently and spent time
with New Zealand music industry heavyweights such as Dave
Dobbyn. Danni is a very talented artist who we will be hearing
a lot from in the future.

“Seussical the Musical” has been announced as the Hillcrest High School
show for 2016. The show will be held at the Clarence street Theatre from
30 March to 2nd April. Auditions are being held on the 16th and 17th of
October in the music department. 2016 year 9 students are invited to
audition. Please email Mervyn Cook mcook@hillcrest-High.school.nz to
express interest. Come and be a part of this exciting musical experience.

The Year 13 Geographers didn’t let the winter weather dampen
their spirits this term, and the best way to understand the
development of Tourism in Waitomo was to go on a 2-day field
trip. So in week 3 we descended on the sleepy village and
discovered there were certainly many caves to explore, and we
even saw a Kung-fighting Kiwi in Otorohanga. Unfortunately the
huge amount of rain meant we could not go Black Water rafting
due to flooding in the caves. Thank you to Miss Campbell for
also joining the trip.
Saturday 14th August saw Hillcrest High hosting the first ever
Waikato Robocup regional competition. Five schools competed
in 3 different categories, Junior and senior theatre and senior
rescue. Teams were expected to build and program their
robots, then perform on the day. The competition ran really
smoothly and was a great success, we look forward to making
it bigger next year!
The winning Rescue team of John Voss, Jonah Franke- Bowell
and Gabriel Pan then traveled to the National Robocup
competition in Christchurch on the September 12th. Although
there were a few hiccups with the robots performance they
still managed to place 2nd in their category. It was a fabulous
experience seeing over 50 teams competing.
This Term we also had six Year 11 students represent our
school at the regional Geography competition called Maatangi
Whenua, which was held at Tauranga Girls College this year.
The team consisted of Nikhil Rajendram, Sophie Keane, Jess
Phillips, Oliver Duke, Mikayla Carpenter and Flavian Ember.
They all performed very well, and finished just behind the top
three schools.

Outdoor Education
The 2015 Outdoor Education class has had a great year of
adventure. As pictured the students completed their SSI dive
certification at Mayor Island, off the coast of Tauranga in Term
2. We also tramped up Pirongia and in the Kaimanawa Ranges.
This then led into a 2 day caving trip to Waitomo where the
students were guided through Gardner’s Gut caving system
with the experienced staff at Black Water Rafting.
Recently we completed three days in the snow, building a
snow shelter and learning skills around walking on snow using
an ice axe and crampons. Alongside the practical elements of
this course, students also learnt a lot about the environment,
sustainability and risk management.
All students have worked very hard, demonstrating a high
level of skill and understanding. The infamous Journey is
still to come; where the students work in teams of four to
complete a multisport event over three days totalling 150km
in length.

Boxing
The Hillcrest Archery team won the NZ Postal
Shoot.
Members of this team were: Jez Wathen-Smith,
Lachlan Mills and Joel Halliday – all year 9/10 so
a great result, boys.
Durrell Fatupaito and Tiwana Gould fought in
the Novice Champs in Rotorua. Tiwana Gould
came 2nd in 57kgs. Tiwana fought with heart
and had to change his style of fighting - he kept
going even when it got tough.
BMX
Durrell won the 54kg weight division. His opponent had a bit
more experience than him, but Durrell sussed his opponent out
in the first round, going hard in the 2nd and 3rd coming away
with a clear win.
Jessie Smith is the U14 WORLD CHAMPION after
competing at the BMX worlds in Belgium in July.
After a disappointing 4th place in her semi
final Jessie came back and won the final, leading the field early
on and winning comfortably.
Both boys will be competing in the National Champs later this
year.

Waikato Regional Champions
A very successful secondary schools tournament
was held on Saturday, 12 September. Over 160
teams enteded, including a record of 29 teams
from Hillcrest High.
The day was organised by Hillcrest High School Football Club
and a huge thanks goes to the large number of volunteers
involved in the running of the day.
On the 11th August Hillcrest High School competed in the
Hillary Outdoors Get 2 Go Challenge at Lake Karapiro Domain.
Hillcrest entered 2 teams into the competition: an all-girls
team and a mixed premier team consisting of 4 boys and 4 girls.
The day involved students competing against 10 different
schools (21 teams) in the Waikato. The event required students
to work together and gain as many points as possible as they
participated in: kayaking, mountain biking, orienteering and
problem-solving activities over a four-hour period.
The all-girls team finished in a very respectable 16th place with
274 points. Their highest amount of points were scored in the
mountain biking event where they worked very effectively as
a team.
The Hillcrest mixed premier team performed well in each of
the tasks, especially in the problem solving event where they
gained maximum points. This consistent approach enabled the
team to gain a total of 361 points, and this was enough to secure
top position; finishing as the Waikato Regional Champions for
2015!
Hillcrest now has the opportunity to compete in the national
Get 2 Go championship at Great Barrier Island from the 6th to
the 11th of December.

Franke-Bowell, Jessie Smith, Jet Lim, Jaxon Wright, Anja Kuys
and Megan Henderson.

The ILC travelled to Fraser High School on Tuesday 15th
September to compete in the Special Olympics Basketball
tournament. Two teams were entered who would take away a
first place in both divisions.
The teams wore their Hillcrest tracksuits with great pride
and displayed sportsmanship throughout the day’s matches.
The foundation for the team’s victories was playing as a team
with both groups working well together on both defence and
offense.
The ILC will be looking to continue their success when they
represent Hillcrest at the Athletics Special Olympics in term
one in 2016.

Indoor Bowls
Hillcrest had 10 girls and 4 boys attend the
Waikato Secondary Schools Pairs Champs this
year. For most of the players this was their
second Championship and a high level of skill was
displayed by all.
They all played in a good competitive spirit and displayed great
Sportsmanship.
Caitlin Moore and Nikita Chand collected the Medal for fourth
place in the Girls competition, this was fantastic considering
Nikita was a late replacement and had never bowled before.
Ollie Bell and Riley Higgs collected third in the Boys competition
playing very well to go undefeated throughout the day and with
a few more points would have been playing the final.

Joshua Martinsen won Silver in 58kg 14-15

Inline Hockey
Congratulations to “Semtex” for winning the
school league “A” division. The team quickly
gained a 3-0 lead over Hamilton Boys High who
responded towards the latter part of the first
half to tie the game 3-3.
The second half was a battle of vigorous attack and scrambling
defence from both teams.
Hillcrest finally put the winning goal home 90 secs before the
end of the match.
In the “B” division, Hillcrest teams “Typhoon” won third place,
and “Tornado” second. Special mention goes to Kate Thomson,
(goal tender) who played four games in both A and B divisions,
and was called on to make some very difficult saves during
the “B” division finals. Kate held a pivotal role in keeping the
Hillcrest teams competitive during this round.
Good luck to all players participating in the upcoming national,
and inter regional championships.

Adventure Kayaking
On Wednesday the 9th September Hillcrest
entered two teams in a new kayaking event
run by Boatshed Kayaks.
In this event
students kayaked in teams as they navigated
their way around Lake Karapiro and finding different check
points in order to gain as many points as possible over a timed
period.
The 4-person Hillcrest team managed to find all markers
on the course and they finished the race with 178 out of a
possible 180 points. This resulted in a first-equal placing with
Cambridge high school, an excellent result. The 3-person
team participated very well, but a costly mistake meant they
finishing at the back of the field.
Target Shooting
Kacey McCabe- Shaw was selected for the North
Island Junior Team to compete against the South
Island.
Multi
Nicole Emslie completed the World
Aquathlon Championship in Chicago in
early September and came 7th out of 16
in U19. It was very hot - 32 degrees C with
high humidity.
Nicole also completed the Triathlon – a bit cooler but windier
and the lake a bit choppier - still 29 degrees C. She came 24/70
in the U19s and 120/758 competing in the sprint triathlon.

The rowing season is well underway with
year plus and novice rowers undertaking
land based and water based training for
the last two months.
Currently we have between 32 and 36 rowers plus 3 to 4
coxswains training under the watchful eye of Dr Brett Smith
(Head Coach and Coaching Co-ordinator), Miss Chloe Mac
Farlane, Mr Brent Whiting, Miss Annabel Rowlands and Miss
Loveday Yeoman.
The school rowing club is led by Mr Blair Wright with Mrs Liza
Hallam our Rowing Manager for both the Girls and Boys crews.
Rowing is going from strength to strength at Hillcrest with a
further increase in numbers from last season. The committee
is planning to increase their plant and equipment with the
purchase of new boats and possibly a new coaches boat.
The clubs first training camp will be held at Mangakino in
Labour weekend and by this time all crews will be well into
their training programme for the season.

Twenty-Six Hillcrest High School students
competed in the Waikato Secondary Schools Ski
and Snowboard Champs held at Turoa on August
21st. We were the biggest team there, it was
a fantastic day for riding and the students did
amazingly well.
We had four podium finishes with Alex Douglas (Year 13)
finishing 3rd in the Girls Snowboard Giant Slalom, Sam
McFarlane (Year 9) grabbing second in the Boys Slopestyle
Skiing and Rebecca Pickering (Year 12) having a great day in
finishing second in the Girls Snowboard Slopestyle and first in
the Giant Slalom.
The team now turns their focus to the North Island competitions
to be held in weeks 9 and 10 this term.

Hillcrest had 7 skateboarders competing at the
recent Waikato Secondary School Champs held at
the In-line Hockey rink. Competition was fierce and
the rink made for some slippery landings!
Despite this Fynn Thomas made it to the open final and Corina
Tweedie won the Open Girls. The Hillcrest team of Corina
Tweedie, Benjamin Pizzini, Connor Dewar and Thomas Groufsky
also won the Team competition.
All around it was a great day and all of you out there who are
considering it for next year should certainly give it a go!

Rugby
Rugby has once again had another successful
year at Hillcrest High School both on and off
the field, once again fielding 4 teams.
The Montana Catering Hillcrest High School 1st XV finished
round robin in top spot in the Warren Gatland Division of the
Waikato Secondary Schools 1st XV Competition only dropping
one game throughout the season. The team set some high goals
for 2015 especially after finishing top of the table, however
they lost their semi-final play-off in a nail biter vs Te Kuiti 1st
XV 20 – 17 meaning the team missed out on the final for the
second year in a row.
The boys have put huge amounts of effort into this season and
should proud of the culture they have created and the way
they have influenced their peers within Hillcrest High School.
Hillcrest High School 2nd XV had a very successful season
reaching the final of their division. Losing several games by
just a few points early on put them on the back foot however
they bounced back to go on a great winning streak. The team
had wins of schools such as St Pauls Collegiate and Te Awamutu
College throughout the season.
There are some promising players coming through from this
team who will push for 1st XV spots in 2016. The future of
rugby at Hillcrest High School looks promising.
Hillcrest High School U15 finished the season strongly and put
in real team efforts vs schools such as Forest View and Hamilton
Boys’ High. Although they began to hit their peak in the last
few rounds they had numerous close losses and suffered from
injuries. Credit must go to coaches Ben Kennedy and Kelvin
Whiting and their team for their commitment throughout a
tough season.
Farewell to Edgar Johl
Hillcrest High School Rugby would like to acknowledge Edgar’s
service to Hillcrest High School Rugby over the past 8 years.
He has coached the U14s many years ago which included some
of today’s 1st XV members and has then been involved with
the 1st XV for a number of years since in both managing and
coaching roles. During this time the teams have reached semifinals on a number of occasions and the finals in 2012 &2013.
Edgar is a member of the Hillcrest High School Rugby Club and
a driving force behind not only rugby but all sport at Hillcrest
High School. All of this is while carrying out the role of Deputy
Principal.
Edgar is a coach with huge knowledge from the 31 years of
coaching he has under his belt in that time coaching 4 different
1st XV teams. He has shared his knowledge with not only all
the boys over these years but also other coaches.
The boys will miss Edgar greatly and this was shown by the
emotional haka they performed for Edgar after their last
game.
Edgar you will be missed by the 1st XV, the Hillcrest High
School Rugby community, the school. Thank you for your great
contributions.

The team showed the fighting spirit we wish for from all our
teams.
Hillcrest High School U14’s showed a lot of promise during
2015 and the future of Hillcrest High School Rugby looks in good
hands. They finished round robin in 7th. The team showed huge
determination when up against some massive teams and never
once backed down. This attitude will benefit all players in
the future. Thanks to Coach Steve Wilson and Manager Sharon
Wilson for their hard work this year.
Huge thanks must go to all coaches and managers for the 2015
season. Without their contribution rugby at Hillcrest High
School would not be in such a good position. The same must

The 2015/16 school season is already underway.
We currently have three senior teams competing
in the Waikato League at Hamilton Boys High
School every Tuesday night.
We also have four junior teams competiting in the Waikato
Junior Schools Competition at Hillcrest and Hamilton Boys
High School every Thursday afternoon/evening. That is
approximately 60 students training and playing at competitive
level at the moment. This would not be possible without the
help and support of our coaches and managers.
We currently have 9 coaches with a few parents helping out
some of our junior teams as managers. This commitment is
much appreciated!
Sport
Recently we had some of our Year 13 girls play at the NZ Club
Nationals. Kristina Emson (4), Tyler Hurn (2), Ciara Fee (13) and
Rebecca Endres (6) played for Hamilton B Women along side
some ex-students Niahm O’Brien (9) and Meagan FitzgeraldWebb (10). With the exception of two players this was just
about a Hillcrest team! The girls had a great week just missing
out on semi-finals and finishing 5th in Division 2.
We also have four junior teams competiting in the Waikato
Junior Schools Competition at Hillcrest and Hamilton Boys
High School every Thursday afternoon/evening. That is
approximately 60 students training and playing at competitive

The Waikato Sunday Social competition, that is run at Hillcrest
High School every term, continues to be very popular with over
80 of our students having competed so far this year. There

with Ms Clifton and out of school teams can enter directly

Tournament Week - August 31 - September 6
Congratulations to the Hillcrest teams who competed in Winter
Tournament Week held from Monday 31st August to Sunday 6th
September. Some outstanding results were achieved by these
teams.
Basketball - Boys
Premier Tournament - Rotorua
Our Senior Boys Basketball team comprising Yaser Azfar, Drew
Elliott, Agapei Eukaliti, Marlon George, Wiri Nikora, Tonisha
Olsen, Shalom Peacock, Joshua Sprosen, Tyrone Ta’Eiloa, Logan
Vugler and Quinn Vugler, under the eye of new Coach Mr Daniel
Green and Manager Mr Shane Vugler, competed in the Regional
tournament in Rotorua. The teams aim was to make the top
six and qualify for the nationals being held in the September
holiday break.
After a first up win against Pakuranga College, the team had
a tough encounter against Fraser High School before going on
to beat local rivals St Peters (Cambridge). This result qualified
the team for a quarter final against Auckland powerhouse St
Kentigern College, which they unfortunately lost 75 – 86. The
boys then beat Hauraki Plains College for a place in the top six,
and in doing so qualifying for the nationals. In their last game
the boys lost narrowly to Hamilton’s St Johns College.
Overall the tournament was a huge success. MVP award went

Junior Tournament - Rotorua
The Junior Girls basketball team also competed in the Regionals
in Rotorua. The team comprised Sarah Bigham, Georgia Brooks,
Samara Clare, Grace Cooper, Casey Davis, Giorgia Parsonson,
Olivia Parsonson, Amy Smith, Emily Sue and coached by
Rebecca Sue, Year 13.

Football - Boys
Rex Dawkins Tournament - Papamoa
The Boys Ist XI travelled to Papamoa to compete in the Rex
Dawkins tournament. The team was accompanied by Coach Mr
Josh Groom, Assistant Coach Mr Dylan Groom and management
staff/referees Mr Brett Chibnall and Mr Dominic Hopkirk. The
tournament began with a 2-2 draw with Pukekohe HS. Although
the team would defeat Northcote on day two but close defeats
against Lindisfarne (Hastings) and John Paul College (Rotorua)
meant that the team missed the quarter finals by one point.
After a disappointing day two the team bounced back and the
remaining games proved to be a scoring feast with the team
scoring 23 goals and conceding only one. The team members
were Matthew Ashman, Isaac Boyce, Bailey Brown, Alex Choi,
Todd Didley, Jordan Ditfort, Liam Du Plooy, Cameron Horsfall,
Jet Lim, Bradley Mardon, Kristofer Nebesky, Jacob Rotton,
Natch Sadindum, Daniel Smallwood, Sasha Wallbank and Simon
Watkins.
Hockey - Girls
Tournament - Tauranga
The Girls Ist XI travelled to Tauranga to compete in the first
ever combined top tier tournaments of Federation Cup and
Marie Fry Trophy. The team consisted of Nicola Aldridge, Molly
Bird, Dannii Cooke, Jessie Davys, Joeke de Vos, Aleysha Elmer,
Acacia Kelsen, Amelia McNamara, Tara Newman, Shani Oed,
Kendra Peart-Anderson, Maia Peart-Anderson, Shanelle Reeve,
Briar Wharry, Georgia Wharry, Deborah Yung and Olivia Yung,
with coach Miss Shannon Cochrane. The teams goal was to
make the Federation Cup (top 16 in NZ), but the team was
placed 3rd in their pool after two days of play and then played
off for 16th – 32nd. After a close 3-2 loss to Otumoetai College
in the semi-final, the team battled for an extra time win over
Tauranga Girls College and the bronze medal for 3rd place,
and a final placing of 19th in NZ. Debroah Yung was named
the team’s MVP and a special thankyou to Caroline and Grant
Wharry for spending the week with the girls.
Premier Tournament - Taupo
The Girls Ist XI competed in the National Premier Tournament
in Taupo. The team comprised Tayla Christensen, Hayley
Dibley, Kira Frank, Eden Healey, Emma Kelly, Braidy Lidington,
Emma Marshall, Samantha Nation, Anina Peresson, Melissa
Pfeffer, Samantha Quintal, Hannah Rogers, Chelsi Rys, Kaila
Rys, Victoria Scott, Emma Sizer, Jessica Sizer, Brianna Uivel and
Georgia Williams, coached by Mr Martin Finny with assistance
Tayla Christensen and team Manager Mrs Kate Rys. The team
was also accompanied by referee Mr Turner. The team won
their first game, but then lost the next two which placed the
team in the bottom 16 of the competition. Despite a number of
injuries the team played some outstanding football throughout
the week and ended the tournament in 24th place, which
effectively means a ranking of 24th in New Zealand.

Hockey - Boys
Founders Cup Tournament Palmerston North
The Boys Ist XI travelled to Palmerston North to compete in
the Founders Cup. The team was coached by Mr Richard Baggs
and Managed by Mrs Karen Floyd and composed of Logan Floyd,
Tyaelor Hastie, Estian Hattingh, Hayden Horsfall, Hamish
Keighley, Jared Kelsen, William Kingsbury, Crae Kinzett-Rolfe,
Giles Lusty, Thomas May, Max Phillips, Devin Pointon, Aonghas
Robertson, Brayden Silvester and Lewis Smith. The teams
aim was to qualify for next year’s combined top tier Rankin
Cup/India Shield which would require a top two finish. The
team played consist hockey throughout the tournament with
the team making it through to a semi-final encounter with
Taradale HS, and after intense second half pressure won by
3-1 and qualifying for a match-up against Pakuranga College in
the final, but went down by 2 goals to 1. Although losing the
final the team still earned a silver medal for second place, and
importantly booking a place in next year’s top tier tournament.
Another achievement of note is that Hillcrest will be joining
Wairarapa College and Rangitoto College as the only state coeducational schools nationally that have their boys and girls
Ist XI’s competing at the top tier secondary school hockey
tournaments in 2016. Well done!
Lacrosse - Girls
National Tournament - Hamilton
This year’s Lacrosse nationals were held at Hillcrest High School.
Although losing their first game by a narrow point against
Mt Albert Grammar, the team defeated Auckland Dio with a
convincing win, which meant a play off for 5th and 6th place
against old rivals St Peters. Thanks to awesome goal keeping
by Matilda Plant, the team won by 1 point and ended the
tournament with a 5th placing in NZ. The team was coached by
Siobhan Quintal and comprised Tara Carmichael, Hollie Cooke,
Charlotte Hooper, Anja Kuys, Phoenix Mansell, Emma Marshall,
Faye McDougall, Katya McGeady, Amelia McNamara, Rebecca
Pickering, Matilda Plant, Samantha Quintal, Chelsi Rys, Ellie
Volk, Briar Wharry and Georgia Wharry.
Netball - Open A
Upper North Island Tournament
- Hamilton
This year’s Upper North Island (UNISS) Netball Tournament
was held in Hamilton. The Hillcrest team was coached by Mrs
Kerren Priscott and managed by Miss Katrina Pollard and Mrs
Diane Blackmore. The team comprised Lucie Bardoul, Jaydah
Croft, Lyanne Eukaliti, Cherish Grace, Megan Henderson,
Emmerson Houghton, Nai Mullane-Ronaki, Jessica Pasene,
Fiesola Puamau, Make Puamau, Ambah Tuhoro and Rebekah
Vercoe. Unfortunately the team was a little down on playing
strength with the late loss of Year 13 players Rebekah Vercoe
(Captain) and Make Puamau. This meant the team entered the
tournament with a very young and inexperienced team. After
a rather slow start, and almost facing threat of retaining next
year’s position in A Grade, the team bounced back strongly
with a succession of wins. The team ended up coming 25th
out of 32 teams in A Grade, and out of 112 teams overall and
maintained their position in next year’s A Grade.

Estian Hattingh
This year Hillcrest was invited to send a second team to
compete in the Upper North Island Secondary Schools
Tournament (UNISS) in Hamilton. This was an ideal opportunity
to expose some of our younger talented players to the intensity
of such a competition. The team played 10 games in total.
The team consisted of Rachael Aird, Libby Alsemgeest, Amber
Barry, Olivia Dixon, Alex Douglas, Johannah Gregory, Leah
Haumaha, Georgia McConnell, Brianna O’Brien and Ata Teopu.
And coached by former student Danielle de Ward and Mrs Pippa

In 7 years time Hillcrest High School will celebrate it’s 50th Jubillee.
During it’s short life the School has many produced many distinguished
Alumni , people who have made a significant contribution to their various
field and communities.
Peter Thomas and I would very much like to form a group to help with
the establishment not only of a steering group for the Jubilee but also
some kind of Association of Alumni /Friends .The time is right and with a
group of enthusiastic people the task does not need to be onerous so we
want your ideas: ideas about people who could help. And the aims and
objectives of this new organisation. We
would need a start-up committee; a website linked to the school site
and a Facebook page or pages as we now have a second generation of
students a school.
