Spring 2015 CHI St. Joseph’s Health Firm Foundations Rooted in Faith Inside Building Firm Foundations 2 Providers Join CHI St. Joseph’s Health 3 Making the Move 4-5 Paying it Forward 30 Years Later 6 Charity Ball Funds Purchase Telemetry System 7 New Life for Old Pews 8 With Gratitude to Our Donors 9 CHI St. Joseph’s Health Building Firm Foundations Since our last issue of Firm Foundations in April 2014, we’ve seen a great deal of change at our facility. Last May, we introduced our new name, logo, and branding look to the community, transitioning from “St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center” to “CHI St. Joseph’s Health”. With “CHI” as part of our name, the re-branding identifies all the facilities under the Catholic Health Initiatives umbrella, which is a powerful way to unite all the CHI facilities nationwide. Also, the fresh colors and logo layout are meant to reflect the energy and innovation that are part of the new CHI going forward. You’ll notice this publication reflects the look and feel of the new branding! All in all, we love the new brand and feel the community has embraced the change. The other bigger, more obvious change we have undergone was the completion of our new hospital and clinic facility at 2500 Fairway Street! After all the planning, building, moving, and even worrying, we opened our doors to patients in December 2015, two years after we began moving dirt on the open field we now call home. We are truly the regional healthcare hub for all of Southwestern North Dakota. We have the only fully-integrated operating room between Billings and Bismarck. We recently received an excellent review from The Joint Commission, the governing body of hospital accreditation in the United States. Not only were they impressed with the facility, but also with our processes, our planning, and our people. To be serving patients in this fantastic new building is an awesome experience. For all of you who have supported this project, we say a sincere thank you. Know that we are working our hardest to continually improve the patient experience and employee satisfaction. Thank you for all of your support of CHI St. Joseph’s Health. The future is bright! Sincerely, Jodi Bosch Director CHI St. Joseph’s Health Foundation 2 Providers Join CHI St. Joseph’s Health Dr. William Lowe, OB/GYN Dr. William “Matt” Lowe, MD, practices Obstetrics & Gynecology at CHI St. Joseph’s Health Clinic in the Women’s Health department. Bishop David Kagan of the Diocese of Bismarck presided over a blessing of the new hospital and clinic facility on Thursday, November 6. Speakers included Senator John Hoeven. Making Late in the evening on December 8th, employees Dennis Cannon and Dorothy Meduna celebrate the safe and successful transport of patients to the newly opened CHI St. Joseph’s Health. The move from the old hospital to the new hospital took place at 8:00pm the night of Monday, December 8, 2014. A converted school bus and dozens of trained volunteers helped transport 8 in-patients across town. 4 Staff put in long days at work, keeping the old hospital running and prepping the new facility to be patient-ready. Here, staff from Purchasing unpack supplies in the Emergency Department. Director of the Medical/Surgical/Pediatrics Unit Kayla Kleinjan visits with some past and retired employees during a special tour November 7. the Move The first baby born at the new hospital came along shortly after the doors were opened. Mother Lorina Rajala went into labor Monday afternoon and checked into the new OB unit at 2500 Fairway Street. Baby boy Liam Rajala, 9lb 6oz and 21.5 inches, was born at 9:09pm on 12/8/14, delivered by Dr. Thomas Arnold. When the new hospital opened, the old hospital closed to patients. The only services still taking place at the old hospital in the months following the move were laundry, St. Alexius Kidney Dialysis, and The Bone & Joint Center of Bismarck. The old hospital is currently for sale and interested buyers are touring the building. 5 Recently, a couple came into the CHI St. Joseph’s Health Foundation office to make a donation. Their generous gift was a substantial one, but their beautiful story was what really got our attention. They agreed to let us share this story with our readers, but wished to remain anonymous. We will refer to them as “Mr. and Mrs. Jones.” Paying it Forward 30 Years Later Small farmers in rural Southwestern North Dakota, the Jones family worked hard to make ends meet and take care of the needs of their children. Their world changed when their teenage son was diagnosed with cancer in the mid 1980s. Mrs. Jones traveled with him to another part of the country for treatment for several months. In the meantime, Mr. Jones stayed at home to run the farm and care for their other children as the bills piled up. 6 this gift.” That is exactly what the Joneses did, and their donation to the Foundation was for the exact amount of their hospital bill from 30 years ago. The Joneses’ motivation to make a gift came from knowing they received help from others when they needed it. This was their chance to “pay it forward” to someone else in need. After battling the disease for some time, their son was given a final, terminal diagnosis. Mr. and Mrs. Jones were told to take him home and simply try to make him comfortable. Back in North Dakota, the Jones family admitted their son to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dickinson, where he spent the last few weeks of his life before passing away. Mr. Jones was quick to acknowledge his lending officer at the time for helping the family through their financial difficulties – without his help they probably never would be in the position they are today. “When I talked to him and told him ‘I don’t have any money to pay you right now,’ he said to me, ‘Just take care of your child first.’ He helped us work our way out of debt, and that’s why we were able to make this gift.” The bills for their son’s care were overwhelming. St. Joseph’s Hospital took into consideration their income as farmers and their mountain of medical debt, and waived their bill as part of the charity care program. Of the hospital writing off their bill, Mrs. Jones recalls, “I think it saved our lives, really.” Over the years, the Joneses finally paid off their other medical bills. However, Mrs. Jones said, “The hospital was always on my mind.” In their son’s final weeks of life, he told his parents, “When I get where I’m going, I’m going to help you.” Mr. Jones recalls clearly the day of their son’s funeral and the quiet surrounding them at the cemetery. Breaking the silence, a meadowlark began to sing, a moment that they will remember forever. Mr. and Mrs. Jones took it as a sign that their son was still with them and would indeed help them along the way. Both Mr. and Mrs. Jones were instilled with a sense of obligation as well as generosity during their upbringing. Says Mr. Jones, “Good character tells you, you have to try to pay it back. And we were finally in a position to repay To inquire about making a gift to the Foundation in memory of a loved one, or for further information, call 701.456.4746. Charity Ball Funds Purchase Telemetry System The Annual Charity Ball was another huge success in 2014! The sold-out event with an Arabian Nights theme brought together friends of St. Joseph’s for food, fun, and fundraising. Proceeds benefited the hospital with the purchase of new equipment in the laboratory and the cardiac rehabilitation department. Equipment ordered for Cardiac Rehab just arrived in March. Life Systems International (LSI) is a cardiac rehab telemetry system that is used to monitor a patient’s heart rate and rhythm while exercising during their recovery period after cardiac events such as open heart surgery or heart attacks. Dana Glasser, Cardiac Rehab Coordinator at CHI St. Joseph’s Health, hooks up a patient to the new LSI telemetry monitoring equipment purchased with Charity Ball Funds. With this new charting system and the additional laptop computer that was purchased for Cardiac Rehab, the staff will be able to monitor, track, and report on every aspect of the patient care process while ensuring Medicare and HIPAA compliance. They will be able to more efficiently help patients with more available appointment times and shorter wait times at the start of appointments. The upgrades will eventually lead to less printing & scanning and allow charting to flow directly into the patient’s electronic medical record. Save the Date This year’s Charity Ball will take place Saturday, November 21, 2015. Ticket order forms will be mailed out 6 weeks before the event. Golf Sports Classic Save the Date Saturday, July 11, 2015 To learn more about how to register your team, become a sponsor or for any other information about this year’s Golf Sports Classic, contact CHI St. Joseph’s Health Foundation at 701-456-4746. The event helps provide resources for the Foundation to continue programs and projects related to health care at CHI St. Joseph’s Health. 7 New Life for Old Pews Visitors to our new hospital’s chapel will notice the pews have a familiar look and feel to them. That is because these pews were brought from our old hospital after being refurbished by local craftsman Blaine Dukart. The original pews were installed in the early 1970s by Blaine’s father Richard Dukart for Steffes Church Furniture of Dickinson. Blaine remembers helping his father with the project. The original pews are shown in the old hospital’s chapel (above) and the refurbished pews are shown in the new hospital’s chapel (below). In August 2013, Blaine was approached by Dennis Cannon of CHI St. Joseph’s Health about possibly refurbishing the pews to fit the look and size of the new hospital’s chapel. Blaine’s mother Shirley helped convince him to take on the project. Last fall, Blaine transported the pews to his old shop where he took them apart, sanded them down to the raw wood, re-stained them a new color, and covered them with 3 coats of varnish. Putting the pews back together required modification of the book racks, adjusting the length of some pews, and updating the kneelers with a new color of vinyl. The beautiful pews match the new chapel perfectly, and the few pews which did not fit in the space are being utilized as patient seating in waiting areas throughout the facility. All New Website With our new name, new look, and new facility, we also rolled out an all-new website: www.CHIStJosephsHealth.org We made it easier to navigate, and it automatically adjusts to fit the screen of your mobile device better if you are looking us up from a tablet or smartphone! 8 with Gratitude to our donors The following donors generously supported CHI St. Joseph’s Health Foundation during calendar year 2014 (January 1, 2014-December 31, 2014). Their contributions helped the Hospital continue its tradition of excellence by providing funds to purchase new equipment, support healthcare education and community health programs, and provide care for those in need.
