18 The Curious Savage | April 2011
When Mrs. Ethel P. Savage is involuntarily committed
to The Cloisters, a home for the mentally disturbed, the
staff expect that she, like most of the residents, will try
to get out. What they do not expect is the extent of the
resources on which Mrs. Savage can call to get her own
way. Mrs. Savage is contrasted on the one hand with
the residents of The Cloisters and on the other with her
three stepchildren Titus, Lilybelle and Judith, who are
responsible for her commitment. At all times we ask
ourselves "What is it that puts some people in the asylum and not others?" or in other words "How crazy do
you have to be to be crazy?" Ultimately the play opens
a more transcendant question as to the value of sanity
and its relationship with civilized behaviour. Fortunately you don't have to read how they are answered;
you can see it, which I know will be much more enjoyable.
I am very pleased with this cast, which includes some
actors I have worked with many many times, and a lot
who are new to our company. We welcome Robyn Hasselstrom, Noel Schwalm, Courtney Macdonald, Kathy
Wilson, and Janet Kostyna to their first appearances on
the Vagabond stage and welcome back David Howell
and Judith Graile to their second.

nearly 16 years
This is her first major
production, and she is positively thrilled to
be a part of it. Besides drama, she loves
music and literature. She hopes you enjoy the
show as much as she does! Oh, and take an
umbrella – it's raining.
Jeffrey — Damien McNabb
This is Damien’s 7th play with Vagabond Theater. Having played many roles from lead and
supporting actor to director and producer he has
found his experience with Vagabond to be ever
an enlightening journey. Coming from a strong
background in both the Yukon and BC, he has
found a great home and fantastic creative outlet
in Banscarth through Vagabond Theatre. Damien looks forward to many years of continuous creativity with
the family and friends whom he shares the stage
Hannibal
stage debut was as Banquo
in Macbeth with the Paper Bag Players in
Yorkton. This is his first production with
Vagabond. He is a Grade 11 student
The Curious Savage | April 2011 9
Mrs. Paddy — PEGGY BRADSHAW
Peggy lives in Binscarth with her husband
Murray and has been involved in Vagabond from time to time since it began. She
has been on stage as a “Pick-a – Little” lady
in “The Music Man” Marilla in “Anne of
Green Gables”, Abby , one of the murdering
spinsters in “ Arsenic and Old Lace”, and the
cook in “Annie”. Behind the scenes she has
been the producer for “The Mouse Trap” , “The Best Christmas
Pageant Ever “ and “Nuncrackers”
Titus— David Howell
Vagabond Theatre Company
is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to enrich, educate and entertain our
communities by encouraging the performing arts and producing quality entertainment.
2010-2011
PRESIDENT—Mason Jardine
SECRETARY—Vonnie May
TREASURER—Ursel Boucher
DIRECTORS—Betty Senger, Jamie Bradshaw, Kay Klopstock, Damien
McNabb, Keneen Bridgeman-Magnowski, Linda Stainer
David Howell was born and raised in Newfoundland and has lived and worked in Russell Manitoba since 2005. Most of his previous theatre experience was with The Carleton
County Players in New Brunswick,
who wrote and performed comedy skits and
plays. This is his second time on a Vagabond
stage, after having played Father Virgil in
Nuncrackers.
Change is the way of things. In organizations as in all else, changes are
needed from time to time to renew and recharge. Vagabond has undergone
many changes since its inception, as each new project calls for experimentation and exploration. With three new members to our Board of Directors this
year we have an influx of new blood and new ideas. Let us hope that this is
just the beginning of a whole new generation of Vagabonders.
Lily Belle — Veronica Havelange
Veronica is excited to be in another Vagabond Production. She has been in A Coffin for
Lazarus, Anne of Green Gables, But Why Bump
off Barnaby, Arsenic and Old Lace, Home is
Where Your Clothes Are, and The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. Veronica and her family
moved from Binscarth to Russell last summer, but the Vagabond Theatre Company
will always be a second home to her. This play was so much
fun to be part of, with its quirky characters and touching message...she hopes you all will enjoy it too
And the key to all this is you, the audience. Theatre exists to engage the audience member, to make him or her laugh or think, or feel joy or pity. Everything we do, we do for this purpose. We thank you for agreeing to be engaged.
10 The Curious Savage | April 2011
Yet even so, Vagabond remains committed to providing professional quality
theatre and to training children and adults to provide theatre of this quality.
At the same time, and just as importantly, we continue to introduce more
people, young and old, to the magic and joy of contributing to a theatrical
performance. There is nothing more rewarding to those of us who have been
around for a while to see someone new blossom as a performer.
Mason Jardine

and especially Mason for this opportunity to play Judith.
