Just a note from your......
Potentate and First Lady
The month of April is over, where did the time go? Carol and
I attended the Provost Guard’s Mid-Winter where Hella’s Provost
Guard hosted the event; it was held at their home gun range, Dallas
Pistol Club. It was a full two days of competition, 23 teams with
93 shooters. Yes, Hella did very well. Carol and I would like to say
Congratulations to all the Shrine shooters that attended.
Our next event was at the International Legion Of Honor. This
event was located in Saint Louis, Mo. We attended the Memorial
service for all the International L.O.H. Nobles that have passed away this past year. After the services, we attended the election of officers and the installation of the new Commander. This is where Corpus Christi P.P. Gilbert Medina was installed
as International Commander. It was an honor for Carol and I to be in attendance. We had a great time traveling with Don
and Sue Young.
April 16, many Nobles, Ladies and friends went to the Rough Riders Game. If you’ve never been to a baseball game
you are missing out on some really fun times. If you know of anyone who has kids, this is the place to take them. There is
so much for them to do. We still have some tickets available, to be used anytime during this season. They are only $25.00
includes food and soft drinks. Call the office at the Temple if you want any tickets.
April 23-25, did you know that the Galveston Hospital has served the Shriners Kids for Fifty years? Carol and I,
along with all the Divan members, Motor Patrol, Clowns, Clownetts and new Nobles attended the BBQ, Parades and a Banquet commemorating the 50th Anniversary. It was a great event and was enjoyed by everyone.
April 27, the next event was the Grand Master’s visit at Hella Shrine Temple. It’s a Great Honor to have the Most
Worshipful Grand Master Wendell P. Miller as a member of Hella Temple. The Masters Wardens and Secretaries Association of the 14th District honored the Grand Master with gifts from all District Deputies. We at Hella made a donation in
Wendell and First Lady Billie’s name to the Shriners Hospitals.
April 28, the Bucket Brigade kick-off dinner, with Bob Mantle as Chairman and his team, are assigning locations
for Nobles and their Ladies. If the weather remains good, the collections should be 25% more than last year. Bob Mantle
and his team are doing a great job.
April 29, the Black Horse Unit sponsored their Kids Pony Rides. This is where No kid is left out of the fun. Food,
drinks, and pony rides all came together to put a smile on many a young kid’s face.
In closing, we hope to see you at the Stated Meetings. If you aren’t there, you are missed, so come on back. We’re
really happy to see you.
Fraternally Yours,
Illustrious Wayne Osborne, Potentate, and 1st Lady Carol

Grand Lodge Special Session
Grand Master Wendell Miller has called a special session of Grand Lodge
to be held on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at 10:00 am at the Memorial Grand
Lodge Building in Waco. This special session is to address the problem of
hotel room availability on January 12, 2017.
Due to a convention that has been held on the second weekend of January for about 10 years that brings in many thousands of visitors to the city
of Waco which has every room within miles of Waco booked already, this
special session has been called for the sole purpose of a proposal to change
the date of Grand Lodge in 2017 from the second weekend in January to the
third weekend in January.
Per Grand Lodge Law, a special session can only be called for ONE specific
purpose.
Hella Greeters
SALUTATIONS AND FELICITATIONS from Hella’s Unit of first impressions.
2016 President Steve Eason welcomes and invites all Nobles with their Ladies
to join the Greeters and become the first Nobles that visitors see before Hella
Stated Meetings and special functions. If you’re looking for a Hella Unit with
minimum time commitment, this is it!! No drilling, no cooking and no musical
instrument needed. All that is required is a friendly smile and the desire to become friends with everyone at Hella. If you’re interested, please contact us. The
“Silent Messenger” statue that stands at the front of Hella Center for all to see
was the inspiration of Greeter Elmer Ackerman. Come and be a part of it!

Shriners Get A
Big Thank-You
At the recent Bryan Adams concert at the Verizon Theater in Grand Prairie where many Shriners and their family members raised money
for the Shrine Hospitals, one of the security
personnel related to Hella’s Assistant Rabban,
Chuck “Cheetoe” Hudson, how the Shriners
helped one of his family members. He just
wanted to say Thanks!
• By the time you read this, you should have received your
new Noble tickets, or will very soon. I hope many of you take
advantage of this opportunity to purchase discounted tickets
for the performance of your choice, or, you can contribute
to be a Circus Daddy. Either way, you are supporting your
Shrine.
• Also, by the time you read this, our new Hella Circus web
site should be live. Take a look at it. It is really sharp, and we
now have our own circus web site, that can be easily updated
each year. Go to hellashrinecircus.com.
• The arena seat map and ticket pricing have been finalized,
and communicated to the Dr Pepper Arena ticket office. The
plan is to have the tickets available for purchase either on-line
or in person at the Dr. Pepper Arena Ticket Office on June 1st.
• The promotion plan should be finalized some time in May,
and serious promotion is planned to start approximately six
weeks before the circus. This is a critical component of our
overall circus plan. You are also an important part of our overall promotion plan. Think what 2,700 Nobles, their ladies,
family and friends can do, if they talk up and promote our
Circus at very opportunity. More on this later. If you are interested in being part of the promotion team, please let me know.
• Don’t forget about program ad and banner sales. This is a
tremendous way for you to raise money for your unit, club or
Blue Lodge. Remember you get to designate where 40% of
the ad money goes. This can add up quickly. If your lodge,
unit or club sold $5,000 worth of ads, that is $2,000 you can
keep. And, of course, don’t forget about the $500 bonus to
the top ad seller. If you need help or questions about selling
ads, contact SK Choudhury or Ed Cates. Finally, it would be
great to see Units, Clubs and Blue Lodges with an ad in the
circus program. What a great way to support your Circus and
Shrine, and of course, you get 40% of the ad cost back.
My commitment is to do the best job we can keeping
you informed. I am sure there are many questions. Feel free
to call me at 469-600-2473. Your questions and suggestions
will help put on the best possible circus.
Fraternally,
Bob Moore

Black Horse Patrol Hosts Annual Kid’s Fun Day At The Barn
Braving the threat of another treacherous weather day, on Friday, April 29th, the Black Horse Patrol hosted its annual Kid’s Fun Day at the Black Horse Patrol Barn. Each year the BHP honors special needs children of all ages from several schools in the area with a FUN DAY outing at the barn, complete with horseback rides and a lunch of hot dogs, chips,
cookies, and lemonade.
BHP members started on Wednesday night with a deep cleanup of the restrooms, bleachers, tables and chairs. Then
on Friday morning the BHP cowboys started arriving at 8:00 am with trailers loaded with their best and most gentle mounts.
Most of our black horses are gentle enough for this kind of activity, but some aren’t, so some of the guys brought some of
their other gentle and reliable steeds, some grey, palomino, spotted, and others. By 9:00 a.m. or so, all the horses were inside,
warmed up, and tied safely out of the way for when the buses started arriving. The mounting stairs were set in place, all the
tables and chairs were set up, the music was on, and we were just waiting for the smiling faces.
Buses and cars full of happy kids started arriving around 10 a.m. And by 10:45 the barn was FULL of happy kids,
their teachers & caregivers, parents, and visitors. It didn’t take long for those little kids to remind us of why they were there,
and the little cowboys and cowgirls got lined up at both gate entries into the arena for their turn on a horse.
A gatekeeper is stationed at each gate to control who’s coming in and who’s going out. This is a very important role,
because we don’t want anyone slipping through the gate and bolting under a horse and getting injured. One experienced
horseman is up on the mounting stairs to put the child in the saddle, then the horse is led by another experienced horseman, and a minimum of at least one out-walker accompanies each rider. Some of the lesser experienced riders need two
out-walkers walking along side, especially the kiddos that have balance problems. The horses with riders aboard are then
walked around the perimeter of the arena at least one time. Back at the mounting stairs, the kids are assisted off and helped
down the stairs and back to the gate. Most get right back in line for another round!!
By 11:15 most of the kids had at least one go’round on a horsey. Then it was time for chow! The lines at the food
table were long and steady, and it took no time for us to run low on the first four tubs of hot dogs. Then a run was made to
the kitchen for more dogs and another two tubs of dogs were brought to the barn. Then lo and behold, we ran low again!
Another run was made to the kitchen where the last tub of hot dogs was ready to come down. We had about eight hot dogs
leftover. WHEW!! What a bunch of hungry young-uns!!
After lunch was over, the rides started again. The gatekeepers got back in place, the mounting assistants were in
place, and the horses started coming. Many, many of the kids got rides after lunch, and several of the teachers and parents
too. You never saw so many smiling faces!!
Then it was time to go, and the teachers gathered up the kids and orderly made their way back to their buses and
cars, waving bye, throwing us kisses, and hollering “see you next year”! Several kids are repeat customers at our event and
we know some by first name, and they remember our names too.
Special Needs Departments of these schools brought kiddos: Frisco High School, Frisco Wakefield High School,
Prosper ISD, Coppell ISD, and the Rise School of Dallas. It was one of the biggest turnouts we have ever had.
A GREAT, WONDERFUL TIME WAS HAD BY ALL. It turned out to be a not so bad day after all weather-wise.
It stayed overcast mostly, and it did sprinkle lightly a couple of times. But with our exhaust fans and circulating fans inside
the barn, everybody stayed comfortable and out of the weather.
Special thanks go out to all who helped with this annual, extremely worthwhile project. ALL UNITS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PUT THIS ON YOUR CALENDAR FOR NEXT YEAR. Unless otherwise announced, it’s always the
last Friday of April each year. Please come out next year and get you some’o them smiles!
VERY SPECIAL THANKS GO TO ILL. SIR WAYNE OSBORNE AND ALL HIS DIVAN MEMBERS PRESENT, RONNIE & HIS KITCHEN STAFF (for the great lunch), HELLA CLOWN JERRY “SAWDUST” BARRERA, THE
DIRECTOR’S STAFF (tables & chairs), THE GROUNDS CREW (for spiffing up around the barn) & ANY AND ALL
HELLA MEMBERS WHO HELPED. SORRY IF ANY NAMES WERE LEFT OUT.
ALSO VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL OUR WIVES WHO WERE THERE, and working just as hard as
anybody!!
SEE Y’ALL NEXT YEAR!!

Imperial Potentate’s Message
Dear Fellow Nobles,
Serving as Imperial Potentate involves a significant amount of traveling to visit
our Temples and hospitals. Even though I have been deeply involved with Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children® for 25 years, what I have
seen and experienced over the last 10 months of traveling across the U.S., and
in Canada, Panama and the Philippines, has been nothing less than inspiring,
and has dramatically increased my pride in both organizations, and deepened my
commitment to strengthen and improve our fraternity and philanthropy.
Visiting our hospitals and outpatient centers, I’ve seen so many incredible successes, and so many
patients who have overcome serious physical challenges and gracefully adapted to changes that could
make anyone just want to give up. The children never stop trying. Even more amazing, the children we
serve are always happy, positive and smiling. And that is probably as much a credit to our amazing staff,
who are able to not only deal with medical issues, but also able to spend the time and energy needed to
provide reassurance, build confidence and instill hope, as it is a credit to our patients’ and families’ determination and resilience.
The location doesn’t matter – from Greenville, S.C., to Canada, to Mexico – you see different
staff, families and patients – but you also see that same life-changing attitude of hope. Traveling as Imperial Potentate also means being noticed everywhere you go, and meeting many new people. What most
of the people want to tell me is “thank you.” In some way, Shriners International or Shriners Hospitals
for Children made a difference in their life, or in the life of a loved one, or even in the life of a colleague
or just someone they knew, and they want me to know they are grateful and appreciative. But they aren’t
really thanking me. They are thanking the office of Imperial Potentate, the organization, and most importantly, every Shriner, staff member and volunteer who works every day to fulfill our mission of improving the lives of children and making the world a better place. It really isn’t until you have traveled back
and forth across this country repeatedly – and even traveled globally – that you begin to get a true sense
of the size of the difference we’ve made – one life, and one family at a time.
Sometimes, as we stress the importance of increasing our membership and patient numbers (which
is crucially important) we may lose sight of what we have accomplished, and the difference we continue
to make in the lives of so many. Be inspired by the work we do – and use that inspiration to remain dedicated to continuing these efforts.
As July approaches, please also remember the importance of Imperial Session to every Shriner.
Imperial Session is an opportunity to gather with your fellow Nobles from
around the world, be inspired and have some fun. I want to thank Deputy
Imperial Potentate Chris Smith and Director General John Massey for
their tireless efforts to promote the 142nd Imperial Session of Shriners
International. We look forward to seeing you in Tampa, Fla., July 3-7.
Thank you for all you do for Shriners International and Shriners
Hospitals for Children.
Yours in the faith,
Jerry G. Gantt

Hella Provost Guard
TSPGA Mid-Winter 2016 Dallas Texas – Hosted by
Hella Shrine Provost Guard on April 1st & 2nd.
We had a great turn out at the TSPGA in Dallas
April 1st & 2nd. There were 97 shooters including 20 ladies who competed in the events over the two days. Texas
Shrines included Ben Hur, Al Amin, Maskat, Hella, Sharon,
Suez, Khiva and AlZafar.
Hella fielded a B, C & D team, Open Shooters and
our Ladies team. B-Team: Grant Anderson, Alan Poff, Roger
Carney & Patrick Throop – took a solid 2nd Place; C-Team:
Mike Edwards, Larry Gammill, Scott Brosi & Nick Fehrenbach took 1st Place and D-Team: Doc Laffel, Bubba Carney,
Dossie Mitchell & SK Choudhury took another solid 2nd
Place. Open shooters included Michael Burgess and Angel
Del Gaudio who turned in very respectable scores helping
Hella’s overall standings. Our Lady shooters included Charmaine Mitchell and Kathy Creel. They did a great job shooting. Very nice results by all our shooters.
We had a splendid hospitality suite managed by the
Duke and Duchess of Hospitality, Ted & Carol Frieze, with
lots of help from the Ladies and Nobles of Hella Provost
Guard. Ted had some “special help” including John Creel
and some guy who looked a little bit like he had just jumped
out of a western movie set, Grant Anderson.
It takes a lot of work to have fun and the Nobles of
Hella Provost Guard showed up in force to make the range
ready prior to the shoot, every detail was handled by a seasoned team of pros, backers were prepared, targets made
ready, range cleaned, everything was shined polished and
ready for the event, this is due to the hard work of our great
team of Provost Guard Nobles.
April 1st dawned sunny with crispness in the air, a
perfect day to shoot, and it was Ladies first. We had a great
turn out of super shooters in the Ladies competition and everyone had a safe and fun event. Our Ladies Kathy Creel
and Charmaine Mitchell did a fantastic job representing
Hella proudly.
April 2nd was another beautiful crisp morning.
Bright and early the men’s shoot commenced and lasted until mid-afternoon. With 77 shooters divided into three rounds
it was shooters to the line and away we went. Everyone had
a great time, Roger Carney and Bill Hammack (Maskat) did
fine jobs calling the matches.
After the shooting was over for the day everyone
retired to the hospitality suite to relax and enjoy the friendships that have developed between all the Shriners and their
ladies who participate regularly in the TSPGA events.
That evening we all enjoyed a wonderful banquet
much the result of the hard work of Roger Carney and his
team of helpers. It was a full house and the meal and festivities were great. We auctioned off a beautiful gun box which
resulted in a very nice donation for the Shrine. Dinner was
a mix of good food, good friends, good dancing, great presentations of awards, recognitions and fun. We are already
looking forward to the next event.

We wish to thank all the Nobles, friends and family that came out to the ROUGH RIDERS BASEBALL Game!!! There are tickets available in the Hella office for $25.00 good for the rest of the year!
Please call Lisa at the Hella Office 972-240-6624 to purchase these tickets.
Just a reminder, our Bucket Drive is May 13th and 14th. We have some new places opened up.
Those that cannot work the street corners can help us at several Specs Liquor stores. This is a first for
Specs to let us set up and collect money for our hospitals. We need to thank Bob Vinson for setting this
up. You will be able to sit at a table to collect money for the Bucket Drive. Please let us know where you
can help. Even if your unit is working somewhere else, you can help with collecting at the stores. Of
course, Saturday afternoon we will have our regular appreciation dinner.

My year as Queen and representative of the Daughters of the Nile has kicked off with many great events
– and with more to come. I’ve had the pleasure of
attending several installations – my counterparts in
San Antonio, Tyler, Waco and Shreveport graciously
welcomed me and they are as excited as I am to represent their Temples. I’m proud to be associated with
so many dedicated women.
All of our Units are busy doing what they do best,
supporting our hospitals and children. Many of our
ladies celebrated the Galveston Hospital’s 50th anniversary. Hella and Shalman Temple No. 90 were
well represented – special thanks to our Clownettes
who, as always, were a hit.

Hella Motor Patrol
The Hella Motor Patrol was invited by Our Brothers at
Moslah to perform a drill team exhibition at the grand
opening of the new store of Texas Harley-Davidson in
Bedford. We met for breakfast in Grapevine and was
joined by Bro. Mitch Newstadt of the Moslah Motor
Corp. We completed our journey to Texas Harley-Davidson where we had the pleasure to perform our drill
for several members of Moslah including Potentate Ills.
Sir Harold Benefield and members of the Divan. There
was a large crowd of people in attendance. Moslah had
an information table set up and several Shriners wearing their Fez was in the crowd. Thank you to Moslah
Shrine for inviting us to participate in this event and
represent Shriners.
The Motor Patrol represented Hella well and had a
fun time doing so. Our team today was: Jerrod Neel,
Kirk Johnson, Mike Sorensen and Freddy Cooper. The
young man standing in front of me is my grandson
Haydin. Maybe he will be a Shriner one day.
