Dear DDA Members,
It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost here! 2009 has flown by fast and
we will soon be in 2010! Hard to believe, isn’t it? DDA has had a very busy
year, holding 4 USDF rated shows, 3 schooling shows and 2 educational
clinics! All venues were well attended, and I hope you were able to
participate in many of them.

The Maryal Barnett Clinic was a big hit with all riders and auditors

reporting that it was extremely helpful and enjoyable. And the In Hand
Clinic/AWS Inspection was well attended and fun for auditors to watch! A
Special THANKS to our organizers Jane Crane, Tracy Arnett and Dana
Bishop, and thanks to the owners of the two barns that hosted the clinics, the
Rice’s and the Losorwith’s!
We are looking for ideas for clinics for 2010. Kim Gentry has offered to
teach a clinic on proper lunging techniques. If anyone has any ideas or
suggestions, please let me know. Perhaps in 2010 each boarding facility/
trainer could host an educational venue for the members. Trainers, barn
owners, let me know if you would be willing to host or plan an event for the
club.
Although our shows this year were fairly well attended, the number of entries

were down and we took a loss on most (if not all) shows. We found a few
small ways to increase some of our show fees, and we will be discussing and
voting on them at the December meeting.

Plans for the DDA Year End Awards Party are underway. Mark and Sara
Matz have offered to host the party again and it is tentatively scheduled for

Delta Dressage Association Board Meeting Minutes
Sept 22, 2009
Attendees: Elizabeth Rice, Jayne Crane, Melissa Garner,
Trisha King, Kathy Massey, Tina West.
The meeting was called to order approximately 7:30 PM
by Vice President Trisha King.

CLINIC ISSUES
Jayne reports that 11 are signed up for Maryal Barnett
clinic for Sat and 7 for Sun. Needs 4 more rides. Melissa
will send the schedule to our Middle TN neighbors. $25/
day and $45 for the weekend.
FINANCIALS
Tina made the last payment to USDF Capital Campaign.
Blues City - $1030.95 profit
Fall Colors - $32.16 profit (w/o awards) Melissa reports
the awards cost will just about break us even on this
show.
Bank Balance - $15,002.93
SHOW ISSUES
Jayne moved that all riders under 21 are to wear protective
headgear (ASTM approved) and adults are to refer to
USEF rules for proper headgear for DDA sponsored
schooling shows. If the Farm has a stricter policy, those
rules will apply. Melissa seconded the motion and the
motion passed by acclamation. This rule becomes effective
starting with the 2010 Spring Fling Schooling Show.
AWARDS
Melissa reports that we have added several breed awards.
Year End Awards suggestion is embroidered quarter sheets.
The Awards committee is under budget this year so it may
be possible to spend a little more on the Year End Awards.
Tina made the motion to investigate the price, Trisha
seconded. Motion passed. Melissa will follow up with
costs. Melissa made a motion to remove the meeting
requirement for year end awards, Tina seconded and the
motion passed by acclamation.

2010 shows - we voted to keep the current show dates.
Volunteers - do we have enough for all shows? It was
decided to try to make the rider schedule more predictable
so that club members can plan to volunteer. i.e. lower
levels together and upper levels together.

There was some discussion as to what sort of clinicians the
club should bring in, with no resolution.
YEAR END AWARDS PARTY
CORRECTION - Mark & Sara Matz are hosting the
awards banquet again this year. January 16, 2010 with a
general membership meeting and elections at 6p.m.
With show attendance down, we are finding it difficult to
maintain a positive balance sheet for most of our shows.
With Tina West and Marsha Klimetz moving and
seconding, the following fee changes will be made:

A suggestion was made to seek input from the club as to
what judges to bring in(Sandy already does this
informally).. Just how to do this was not resolved.
CLINIC REPORTS
Maryal Barnett clinic—approximately 30 participant
auditors and 13 demo horse/rider teams took part. We
had 6 attendees from Arkansas, 2 from Alabama, and 1
from central Tennessee. Written evaluations as required by
the Dressage Foundation were uniformly strongly positive.

Find a Ride to an Equestrian Event with ClubEquestrian.com's Ride Share Program
In an effort to help equestrian enthusiasts and competitors save money in a tight economy, and to promote
eco-friendly horse transportation, the United States Equestrian Federation presents the Ride Share Program
on ClubEquestrian.com. Often the logistics of long-distance travel is an unforeseen roadblock in the path to
equine events. This tool allows equine enthusiasts and competitors to post information about open trailer
spots, as well as inquire about rides. Information such as where a trailer is leaving from, open trailer space
and potential lay-overs will be readily available.

USDF Executive Board Statement on Animal Welfare
In response to a recent incident at an international competition, the USDF Executive Board has issued the
following official statement:

The USDF does not approve of training techniques such as hyperflexion especially when taken to an extreme.
While we recognize that we can not control how riders train at home, excessive techniques should not be
tolerated at competitions. The USDF feels that it is very important that as a sport we police ourselves and
encourage the USEF and FEI to call upon their licensed officials to ensure that cruel and abusive riding does
not happen at our competitions.
The USDF agrees with and strongly supports the FEI position as stated in the November 17 press release and
in particular the statement: "The FEI acknowledges and welcome public opinion and will continue to ensure
that the welfare of the horse, which has been central to this debate, will remain its absolute priority."

is 20.00 for current USDF members and 35.00 for nonmembers.

USDF Horse Performance Certificates
No more equivalent tests for 2010 Great
American/USDF Regional Championships
Program
Horses may be awarded a USDF Horse Performance
Certificate for every level, Training thru Grand Prix,
including Young Horse. The processing fee for each
application will be 35.00 beginning October 1, 2009.
Beginning with the 2010 qualifying periods for the Great
American/USDF Regional Championships, the only classes
that can be used for qualifying are those that will be offered
at the championships. There will be no equivalent tests
accepted as qualifying. Only the following classes can now
be offered as qualifying:

Program
Effective October 1, 2010, the minimum percentage score
that must be earned in the designated Second Level Test
Three (or applicable test of choice) Dover Medal class is

New Policy for Lifetime Horse Registration
Owners applying for a USDF Lifetime Registration for their
horse must be a current USDF Participating, Group, or
Business Member at the time of application. The horses
registration will not become effective until the owner has a
USDF membership. If the owner is a USDF member but
cannot provide verification of membership at the time of the
horses registration, an affidavit can be completed. Owners
who do not have a USDF membership can apply for
Participating Membership at the time of the horse's
registration.

Applying for USDF Rider Awards is Easy!
Only USDF members as of December 31, 2009 will receive
this special collector’s edition. Please keep in mind that
rosters submitted electronically can be processed quicker
than those sent via regular mail.
The USDF Rider Performance Awards Application is
available on the USDF Web site. Simply submit the online
application once all of the required scores are earned. A
25.00 processing fee per rider award application will apply
beginning October 1, 2009.

Announces Details for 2010 Annual Meeting in January 12 at 1:00 p.m.

The new USEF Competition year begins December 1,
2009. Renew your membership now. It is so easy when you
log into your MY USEF Account and click on "2010 USEF
Membership Application" under 2010 Competition Year. For
your convenience and the best membership deal, you can
opt for a three-year membership for $150.
The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased
to announce that Louisville, KY, will once again play host to
the USEF Annual Meeting. This event will take place
January 13–17 at the Louisville Marriott Downtown, located
at 280 West Jefferson Street. The hotel features 616 guest
rooms and over 50,000 sq. ft. of meeting space. This fourdiamond property offers contemporary design and
unparalleled guest service. It provides pedway connection
to Louisville’s bustling Fourth Street Live district. Take in the
lively sports scene at Champion’s Sports Bar & Restaurant
or delight in the sun-drenched cuisine of BLU Italian
Mediterranean Grille, both located on the lobby level.
The annual USEF Competing Equestrian membership costs
only $55. As a competing member, you are eligible to
participate at all USEF Licensed Competitions, receive
"equestrian" magazine at no additional charge, a milliondollar personal excess liability policy for horse-related
accidents that cause bodily injury or property damage to
third parties, and the added benefits of USEF MemberPerks
—a members-only discount program with unbeatable deals
from companies like John Deere, Hertz, Sherwin Williams,
USRider, FarmVet, LifeLock, Moxie and others.
The USEF has secured a group rate of $129 for single or
double occupancy, plus tax. For reservations, please call
(800) 533-0127 or (502) 627-5045 and ask for the “USEF
Meeting Rate.” The cut-off date to receive this special rate
is Friday,
December 11, 2009.
Not participating in USEF Licensed Competitions but still
want to be a member? There are member categories for
you. With the USEF Equestrian membership, at $35, you
receive automatic insurance along with the MemberPerks. If
you are a college student who is busy studying and not
competing, you can join as a USEF Collegiate member for
$25. This is another non-competing membership that will
give you the benefits of MemberPerks plus four issues of
"equestrian" magazine to keep you well informed of
equestrian sports. And Club Equestrian, which is only $15,
gives you access to the MemberPerks program.
Registration for this year’s annual meeting is $75 per
person. This includes all breakfast and lunch functions as
well as registration materials. To register for the USEF
Annual Meeting, please visit www.usef.org and click on the
“Annual Meeting” icon located on the homepage. The
deadline to get the discounted registration rate of $75 is
December 18. Should you want to register on site,
registration will be $100. Please note registration will close

USEF is pleased to announce that we can offer you the
ability to pay for your membership renewal with a credit or
debit card or by utilizing our newest electronic check
payment method. We accept American Express, Visa,
MasterCard and electronic check.
If you have questions, call the USEF Customer Care
Center and a personal agent will assist you. You may
call 859.258.2472. Monday through Friday, 8:30 am 5:00 pm [ET]

Once your membership has been processed you will be
sent a membership card as well as key fobs. You are
required to present proof of current USEF membership in order to compete in USEF Licensed Competitions. If
you do not have your membership card, a key fob or a copy of your membership card, you will be required to
pay a $30 non-refundable non-member fee. You can print a copy of your card from www.usef.org. Please
note, effective 12/01/08 you will no longer be able to sign a membership affidavit in lieu of paying the nonmember fee.

Your USEF membership also verifies your amateur status. If you wish to compete in amateur classes and you
have not presented proof of USEF membership with Amateur Certification, you will also be charged the nonmember amateur fee of $30.
Competitions that are also recognized by an Affiliate organization may require membership in the Affiliate
organization to be eligible to compete. You may be required to show proof of membership in the Affiliate
organization, e.g. USHJA, USDF, USEA, AHA, AMHA, ASHA, IALHA, AHHS, IFSHA and others.
USEF Membership information can be verified online, however, should the competition office not have the
opportunity to verify your membership information online, you will be assessed the relevant non-member fees.
