Elroy Sailor: “The best outcome for our community is to ultimately be in a
position where both parties feel compelled to compete for our vote”

“We don’t have a lot
of time, but HBCUs can
help get the economy to
where it needs to be and
we recognize that.”
They also recognize
that criminal justice reform is a critical issue in
for the Black community.
“We have to make
sure that America can
turn the page from the
current mass incarceration system,” added Bell.
“If we talk about communities being devastated by
a failed criminal justice
system where brothers
and sisters are being disenfranchised and not being able to find a job, we
talk about fixing the
criminal justice system.”
The solution, Bell
said, is the creation of
more entrepreneurs in
the Black community and
improving the capital
gains tax which would allow these entrepreneurs
to perform activities like
buying houses to fix up
and resell for profit.
Bell noted that Congress has put forward a
number of compelling
ideas, like economic empowerment zones and
transforming education
to create a marketplace
where schools have to
compete for students.
“I think the economic ideas and educa-
tion opportunities [put
forth by the GOP] are very
specific to the Black community,” said Bell. “It’s
been eight years since a
Republican was in the
[White House]…we have
to make sure that the
Black vote is competitively
fought for.”
Sailor said it’s important to remember that no
party has exclusivity on
having 100 percent of the
best models for America.
Among the new
team’s assignments, Bell
will serve as Senior Strategist and National Director of African American
Political Engagement and
focus on winning elections
for 2016. Sailor has the job
of Senior Advisor to the
Chairman and will focus
on infrastructure, institutional growth and
sustainability.
“America has the
greatest two party political system in the world,
but I believe the best outcome for our community
is to ultimately be in a position where both parties
feel compelled to compete for our vote,” Sailor
said, before quoting Congressman William L. Clay
of Missouri who said: “We
should not have permanent friends, nor permanent enemies we should
have permanent interest.”
“Republicans have
proposed a series of tax

The Chicago Mass Choir® has hit radio with explosive new music, determined to keep choir music alive.
The release of their 16th album, We Give You Praise, coproduced by Percy and Jeral Gray on New Haven
Records, is receiving a phenomenal response. The first
single, “Thank You Thank You Jesus,” is already impacting gospel radio nationwide.
The Chicago Mass Choir® has had no less than fifteen albums reach the Billboard gospel charts. It has
garnered two Grammy, three Dove, and more than ten
Stellar Award nominations. In 2012, the Chicago Music Awards named it the city’s Best Traditional Choir.
The group has appeared on several nationally-syndicated television programs, including BET’s Bobby Jones
Gospel Finale and the Allstate Gospel Super Fest. In
2003, the choir sang “Pressing On” for the Grammynominated album, Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel
Songs of Bob Dylan.
In an exclusive interview with President and CEO
Dr. Feranda Williamson, The Villager asked about the
state of “choir music” in the market today. Dr.
Williamson said, “With the advent of Praise and Wor-
ship devotion teams, some churches have left choirs
out. There is a move to return to choir music and to
continue the tradition it brings. It allows for more participation, more fellowship and gives more opportunities to singers. We are bringing choir music back!”
When asked what gospel personality they would
like to work with in the future, Dr. Williamson paused
and responded, “Kirk Franklin! We sing traditional gospel music but we are opened to all forms of gospel arrangements including contemporary styles!”
The foundation of the Chicago Mass Choir® can
be traced to the city’s vibrant community choir movement, formed more than 60 years ago by the Reverend
Milton Brunson, Robert Wooten, and Willie Webb, but
its immediate roots are in the Ecclesiastes Community
Choir (ECC), organized in 1971 by the late James C.
Chambers.
Unable to be confined to Chicago or even the U.S.,
the Chicago Mass Choir® has for the past eleven years
served as an unofficial ambassador for gospel music, touring Canada and Eastern and Western Europe several times.
It recently completed a 17-city concert tour of Spain.

Villager Columnist
Democratic candidate, Ana Jordan, plans
to challenge the incumbent in the Texas House
District 47 election. Jordan wants to “eliminate
the partisan gerrymandering of district and replace it with an independent redistricting commission”. She believes
that there is a need for
voters and citizens to get
involved with the local
government; however,
the gerrymandering of
districts hampers voters
from direct engagement.
It hinders the engagement because gerrymandering often times tends
to add more people in a
district that support a
certain political party
while cutting out those
who oppose that party.
Not only is she running on “gerrymandering” but also on other issues, that include health

care issues and women’s
rights issues. On the
women’s issues, she believes that there is a need
to “protect a woman’s
choice”. In addition, she
believes that the State
Legislature should restore
funding
to
nonprofits that work with
women reproductive
rights such as Planned
Parenthood. Also, she believes that the state of
Texas should restore the
funding of Medicaid that
it cut.
Moreover, she is
running because her Republican opponent has
failed to “represent” the
people of the district due
to the fact he supported
the 2011 redistricting of
the 47th Texas House District. Prior to the 2011
redistricting of the Texas
House District 47, there
were more Democrats
and as a result it was
more of competing races.
Although, Mrs. Jordan
faces a tighter race, she
believes that she can win
based on the issues that
are championing.
On August 6, Senator
Tim Kaine the Vice President nominee of the
Democratic Party came to
Austin, Texas. The VP
nominee met with the
members of the local
Travis County Democratic
Party. Some of these local
members of the Democratic Party who met with
Tim Kaine included the
Mayor of Austin, elected
members of the Texas Legislature, candidates, Precinct Chairs and local community.
During the event,
Tim Kaine spoke passionately to the audience. He
mentioned that Texas will
be a priority for the campaign, even though it is a
“Republican state.” Furthermore, he spoke of the
need to elect Hillary
Clinton as president of the
United States due to the
fact of her being the most
qualified candidate running for this position. In
addition, he mentioned
how Mrs. Clinton has a
long track record of reaching out to all people, no
matter their social-economical background.
Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee, Tim
Kaine visits Ttravis County, Texas Tuesday, August
9, 2016 in an effort to gear up voters.
After giving the reasons why to vote for
Hillary Clinton, he also
lambasted Trump for “xenophobic and hate mongering speeches”. For instance, he pointed out
Trump’s xenophobic rant
against Mexicans Americans and Mexicans migrants. He talked about
the fact that Trump at-
tacked the parents of a
fallen American soldier. In
other words, he pointed to
the fact that Trump is a
person who divides Americans based on race and
religions. Consequently,
he exhorted everyone in
the room to work hard to
elect a person like Mrs.
Clinton who will work to
unite Americans.

On August 13th the
Ivorian-American community of Central Texas finally
held their Independence
Day celebration. It was a
memorable night in which
the Ivorian American community was joined by
other African communities in Central Texas for the
celebration. For instance,
there were people of
Burkinabe, Togolese, Ghanaian, Benin, and Nigerian
American communities
present. They came to
show their support to the
Ivorian American community.

months after James Raine’s October 2011 death.
Golston, 50, said he had not known Emma very
long before he married her in December 2012 but knew
she was three times a widow.
“Her honesty,” he said when asked what drew her
to him. “She seemed really nice and she was easy with
her heart. I still don’t see all this devious stuff that I’ve
been seeing on the internet. I still don’t believe that
she could have done that.”
They had only been married about a half a year
when police showed up. “They said it was for forgery,”
he said. But police in New Orleans actually jailed her
on a murder charge in Smith’s death seven years earlier.
Smith had been gunned down just outside the
couple’s apartment in an all-but abandoned complex
in eastern New Orleans, where months earlier, floods
following levee failures during Hurricane Katrina had
laid waste to everything.
Police claimed she showed little emotion at her
husband’s death, but the case soon went cold.
James Raine’s murder more than five years later
would lead to its reopening. According to testimony
from Raine’s brother Enoch and two uncles, adopted
brother Terry Everette was shaken by Raine’s gunshot
death. He anxiously confessed to the family that he had
killed Ernest Smith years before at the behest of James
and Emma for $10,000 of Smith’s $800,000 benefit.
The relatives said they urged Everette to turn himself in. They waited months. He never did. So, they contacted a cold case detective in New Orleans.
Everette was tried and convicted of second-degree
murder in December 2014. It was then that prosecutors introduced evidence they said indicated the 1994
death of Emma’s first husband, while he was under care
following a car accident, was suspicious.
That evidence was not allowed at Emma’s trial this
week.
Prosecutors produced insurance records and other
documents showing Emma had increased insurance on
Smith over the years. Even her defense team acknowledged she engineered a forgery scheme to keep Smith’s
daughter from her share of the benefits.
But, in echoes of the defense argument, Golston
insisted Friday that the murder case was built on hearsay and documents that don’t prove guilt.
“I think this whole thing was fabricated. It was a
setup and it wasn’t right,” Golston said. “She didn’t have
anyone killed and she didn’t kill anyone.”
Asked his occupation, Golston said he was “an average worker.” He said he didn’t want to try to calculate how much he has spent on Emma’s defense. “I’d
get sick. It bankrupted me, almost.”
He faults the prosecutors and the judge and says
defense attorneys were too slow to run down leads.
“I don’t go to New Orleans and I won’t,” he said.
“From what I’ve seen, the judicial system down there
is really corrupt.”
Golston was uncertain when asked how the conviction will affect his future and his marriage. “I don’t
know what I’m going to do,” he said. “But I have to live,
too.”
The fallout is hard on James Raine’s family, as well.
His adopted brother, Everette, is serving a life sentence.
Like Emma, he was convicted of second-degree murder.
Raine family members declined comment after
sitting through the trial but handed out a prepared
statement thanking police and prosecutors, expressing
sympathy for Smith’s family and saying they will “pursue closure” in James Raine’s still officially unsolved
death in Mississippi.
California Paper Apologizes
over Simone Manuel Headline
by: Paul Elias
Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO —
The Mercury News of San
Jose, California, apologized
Friday for an insensitive
headline about U.S. swimmer Simone Manuel.
The 20-year-old
Stanford University student
became the first AfricanAmerican woman to win a
gold medal in an individual
swimming event when she
tied for first with Penny
Oleksiak of Canada in the
100-meter freestyle Thursday night.
After the race, the San
Francisco Bay Area newspaper omitted Manuel’s name
in a headline reading
“Olympics: Michael Phelps
shares historic night with
African-American.”
The Mercury News,
which covered Manuel’s
collegiate career at nearby
Stanford, tweeted an apology, saying the headline was
insensitive.
It was posted on the
newspaper’s website about
United States’ Simone Manuel prepares before a women’s 100-meter freestyle
semifinal during the swimming competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics,
Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (AP Photo/Michael Sohn)
9:45 p.m. and quickly removed and replaced with
one carrying Manuel’s
name with Phelps. The
headline was not printed in
the newspaper.
Readers took to social
media sites almost as soon
as the offensive headline
was posted to complain
about the gaffe.
“This is a terrible head-
line,” Mercury News sports
columnist Tim Kawakami
posted on Twitter while the
headline was still live. “It’s
my paper. I might get in
trouble for saying it, but it’s
a terrible headline.”
Executive Editor Neil
Chase said no one will be fired
because it appears there
were no bad intentions in
writing the headline.
Instead, Chase said
there will be a “tough conversation” to determine exactly how the headline
came to be written and
published without any
staffer raising concern. He
said a “couple different
people saw it” before it was
posted.
“We made a mistake,”
he said.
