First consider…is a career as a Phlebotomist right for you?
Job Description:
A phlebotomy technician draws blood from patients or donors in a hospital, blood bank, or similar
facility for analysis or other medical purposes. He or she may be responsible for assembling equipment,
such as a tourniquet, needles and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze,
cotton and alcohol on a work tray, according to the requirements for specified tests or procedures. The
phlebotomist verifies and records the identity of the patient and converses with the patient to ease the
patient’s anxiety of the procedure. In a standard blood draw, the phlebotomist will apply a tourniquet to
the arm, locate an accessible vein, swab the puncture area with antiseptic, and insert a needle into the
vein to draw blood into a collection tube or bag. S/he then withdraws the needle, applies treatment to the
puncture site, and labels and stores the blood container for subsequent processing. The phlebotomist
may conduct interviews, take vital signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at a blood
bank.
Phlebotomists work with a wide age range of patients, from infants to the elderly. Many people are
uncomfortable having blood drawn and it is the job of the phlebotomist to put the patient at ease.
Phlebotomists are in direct communication with both patients and doctors so it is beneficial for them to
possess good interpersonal skills and to enjoy working with people. Phlebotomists are sometimes
responsible for handling phone calls from patients and doctors, scheduling appointments, and delivering
or picking up specimens.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor lists phlebotomists as technicians and categorizes them with Clinical
Laboratory Technologists and Technicians. Four major certifying agencies offer phlebotomy
certification in the United States. However, certification is not required as a practicing phlebotomist,
except in the states of Louisiana and California.
Working Conditions
Phlebotomists and patients are at risk of blood borne diseases and other communicable diseases and
infections. They wear vinyl or latex gloves, face masks, head caps and coats and must follow rigid
safety standards to ensure the safety of themselves and their patients. The tools and equipment used by
phlebotomists also require special handling and disposal methods. A thorough understanding of
procedure and safety standards is demonstrated through recognized certification. Phlebotomists
generally follow a standard work schedule so they typically work 40 hours across five days and may be
required to work shifts. Phlebotomists spend a lot of time walking and standing. The exact salary of a
phlebotomist varies across the states and specific location, but the median annual salary nationwide is
reported as $29,814 per year. The median annual salary in the Flathead valley is $21,000 per year.
