Dear Parents / Caregivers,
Congratulations to the following students who have had remarkable success in the
past week as they debated their way to victory over Sydney Girls High in the finals of
East Side Debating. Thank you also to Tim Curry for his organisation and coaching.

Indy Schneider, who won her way through to the state final for Rostrum Public
Speaking in the senior division against very stiff competition. Evan Ding also
reached the State final in the junior division. We wish Indy and Evan all the best for
the finals.
Monty Tait has won the Southside Junior Regional Elimination Surf Competition in
the Under 16 age group and will now compete in the NSW Junior Championships in
July. Monty has also been selected to attend a talent identification camp run by
Surfing NSW. Congratulations Monty.

The Annual Wind and Brass Competition was held on Monday evening. The 18
students from Years 3 through to 11 put on a spectacular performance. We thank
Jason Noble who adjudicated the evening for us. Congratulations to the following

Anna Kersh was honoured at the Sydney University Year 10 Academic Excellence
Award Presentation where Associate Professor Tony Masters congratulated the
students on their academic achievements.
I am very proud to report that Harry Churches, who left Reddam to follow his ballet
dream, has been offered a place with the Royal Ballet School in London, which he
has accepted. We wish him all the best as he pursues dancing as a career.
This week the Year 7 and Year 9 students have been busy with their NAPLAN
tests and they all appear very happy with these. We look forward to the results.
The Year 11 Art students will attend an Art Retreat at Bundanon this weekend and
they will gain much inspiration from this intensive programme.
The Year 10, 11 and 12 students have a Drug and Alcohol seminar with Paul
Dillon this Friday and his message is a vital one to be heard.

AICES SOCCER CHAMPIONS!
On Wednesday the 16th of May Reddam House sent its best soccer players to
represent Independent Sydney and Districts Schools in the AICES Soccer
Championships at Parklea. In the ISD team 9 out of the 12 boys were from
Reddam and the team created history becoming the first ISD side to ever win the
AICES Championships.
Despite losing George Malesevic early through injury and at times playing with only
10 men the Reddam boys showed tremendous heart and courage to pull off this
historic feat. ISD were undefeated on the day and took out the grand final against
Hills Zone 3-1.
The defensive efforts of Aaron Bland, Alex Mars, Sigen A and Yianni Spyrakis
made sure Goalkeeper Yossi Segal was well protected giving away very few
chances. Yossi had a strong tournament conceding only 2 goals throughout the
day.
Daniel and Thomas Bonomy were explosive in the midfield controlling play with
outstanding skill and tenacity. Both boys scored goals during the day and their
tackling created many opportunities.
Up front Oliver Close tore apart the opposition with his blistering speed. He scored
8 goals in 4 games and created many more opportunities.
Reddam House also had 4 boys selected to represent AICES at the upcoming CIS
Championships, Yianni Spyrakis, Oliver Close, Thomas Bonomy and
Daniel Bonomy who was selected as a shadow player.
Congratulations to all the boys on their outstanding performance.

Last weekend Reddam fielded eight of our teams in the Grand Finals of the Sydney
Comets Basketball Association. Our players were absolutely fantastic and played
some wonderful basketball. We owe a great deal of thanks to our coaches who have
done a great job with our teams.

on the court. Sonya Ivanovic made her free throw on the line to give us a one point

ROSTRUM VOICE OF YOUTH PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION
We are thrilled to announce that we now have two students representing Reddam
House in the State Finals of the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition. Indyana
Schneider won the regional finals this week against very stiff competition in the
Senior Section, and Evan Ding won the regional finals last week in the Junior Division. They will be guests of Rostrum at a hotel in the city for the weekend of the
competition and we wish them both much success.
SYDNEY EISTEDDFOD
The Sydney Eisteddfod dates have been confirmed. All entrants should have received a letter with their pink appearance advice attached to it, outlining all the
details of the competition. Please keep this in a safe place as students are required to bring it with them to the competition.
All students need to organise their own transport to and from the venue. All dates
and times are listed below so that competitors can see who else is in their section
if they need assistance with lifts.
Please note that as students have committed to this competition voluntarily, no
student will be allowed to withdraw from the competition without a doctor’s certificate.
I will be available for extra sessions after school on a Monday, Wednesday and
Thursday afternoon between now and the Eisteddfod. Please e-mail

ANCIENT HISTORY

Eager to get out of the classroom and expand our knowledge and
understanding of the past, on the 9th May, Year 11 Ancient History embarked on
an excursion to the Nicholson Museum at Sydney University. Upon arrival we
met our guide and to Mrs. Price’s great surprise and delight the person who
would be showing us through the museum was one of her former Reddam
House Ancient History students, Giordi Poli.
After an introduction we proceeded to enter the world of the Ancient Egyptian's,
examining the fascinating coffins and mummies; from priests to a young boy,
mummies that didn't properly fit in their coffin, a mummified cat and a wrapping
containing what looked about the size of a kitten but actually turned out to be a
pile of chicken bones. We looked at the coffins and used the detailed artwork
and hieroglyphics as well as the materials the coffins were made of, to try and
guess who the person was, how old they were and what period they were from.
We also looked at different ways of dating and interpreting the remains.
After the Egyptian Exhibit we toured the rest of the museum comparing different
poetry, looking at artifacts from famous sites such as Pompeii and Athens,
discussing the ethics and ownership of artifacts and looking at the busts of the
famous Emperors Claudius and Augustus. I personally found our tour of the
museum incredibly interesting. Giordi was really knowledgeable, friendly and
very apt at connecting the artifacts we viewed with what we had been learning
as well as giving us background to our upcoming topics. The excursion was
thoroughly enjoyable and instructive for the whole class.

ANCIENT HISTORY
Wednesday 9th of May, we headed down to the education room at the University
of Sydney for some hands on work with some of the University's ancient artifacts.
We walked in to a classroom like space but were astonished by the 19 boxes
covering the desk, each filled with about 5 artifacts, from ancient Rome, Egypt,
Pompeii, Medieval Europe and many more. We were allowed to handle the
artifacts provided we wore gloves. Our guide for the day, Giordi Poli, assisted us
in deciphering certain facts about objects of our choice from the boxes. We
sketched the object, tried to estimate a date/period from which it came, what it
was used for, and much more. We learnt a lot about how to decide what artifacts
may have been used for and it was a really fascinating and memorable
experience being able to hold the ancient artifacts that we learn about and see in
books during class.

ENGLISH ENRICHMENT
Students in Year 7 attended a Bell Shakespeare performance of Romeo
and Juliet at the Opera House last week to complement their study of
Shakespeare and Elizabethan theatre. Seeing the play brought to life in this
dynamic and accessible production enabled students to gain a real insight
into the style and fundamental conventions of Shakespearian drama.
Students commented very favourably on the production's overall clarity and
energy.
The second half of our day was devoted to discovering the Inner
Shakespeare: Students were introduced to Haiku and Free Verse poetry
and spent a couple of hours writing their own compositions, inspired by
artworks in the gardens and the natural environment itself. Below are some
of their efforts. Very well done! It was just wonderful to see so many of you
writing away so busily, searching for the right syllable count, metaphor or
simile...

CHINESE
To encourage the practical use of Chinese and gain a more profound
understanding of Chinese culture, a Chinese Pen Pal Club will be set up for
interested Year 8 Chinese Continuers in Term Two.
This Chinese Pen Pal Club will work closely with the High School Affiliated to
Minjiang University in Fuzhou, a city in the southeast of China. Ms. You, the
head of English at the school has been contacted and has agreed to set up the
club by arranging pen pals for our students.
Year 8 Chinese Continuers who participate in this activity will have Year 8 Chinese native speaking students from this high school in China as pen pals and will
be able to communicate with them bilingually in Chinese and English using email.

MATHS NEWS
Naplan
By the time you read this Years 3, 5, 7 and Year 9 will have sat the
NAPLAN test for this year. Whilst one result in isolation does not tell us
much about a student’s performance, I feel that it is very useful that a test
result can be put beside the previous results for parents to gauge their
child’s progress. Personally I do not put a great amount of emphasis on
NAPLAN per se but I do feel that they provide useful feedback to individuals on a number of levels. For me the most telling feature of the NAPLAN
results on the My Schools website is the strong correlation between a
school’s performance and its postcode. It is no surprise to me that NSW
ranks so highly and that the top schools are clustered around the eastern
suburbs and north shore of Sydney. Our students are at a huge advantage
simply because of demographics.
But what the results can’t measure are the intangible qualities that define a
good school. In my opinion a good school has three main features. Firstly is
the ability of the leaders of the school to create an environment in which
academic excellence is nurtured, encouraged and rewarded. Secondly is
the ”roundedness” of the activities available to the student body. In this
regard a strong cultural programme is essential, and the more eclectic the
better, with a strong emphasis on creative and performing arts. Thirdly is
the presence of good classroom instruction.
None of the above will feature on the My Schools website. But at Reddam
House all of the above is in evidence in spades. To measure it you just
need to read the weekly newsletter, or walk around the campuses or stop
and chat to the students. Reddam House students are incredibly confident,
capable and creative. These things will not be revealed with pen and paper
testing. They will be on display continually and are easy to miss when so
many extraordinary things happen on a day to day basis as they do at
Reddam House. It is a joy to work here.

MUSIC NEWS
On Monday 14th May Reddam House held its annual Wind and Brass Competition
and the evening turned out to be a fabulous affair. A total of 18 performers from
Year 3 to Year 11 appeared on stage and dazzled the audience and adjudicator
with their talent. Jason Noble, the adjudicator, stated that he thoroughly enjoyed
the evening and remarked at the level of accomplishment that our students
demonstrated.
In the Primary Section he awarded Highly Commended to:

Zali Wrublewski; Elijah Thomas; Aaron Leiberfreund; and Tomas Hall.

3rd Place went to Sam Cleary who performed ‘Voi Che Sapete’ by Mozart;

2nd Place went to Max Cullen Feng who played ‘Banana Rag’ by Hare

1st Place was awarded to Tate Kemeny who performed ‘Blowin’ Cool’ by
Rae.
In the Intermediate Section Mr. Noble commended on the musicality of our
students in relation to phrasing and expressiveness.

3rd Place went to Nicole Clennar who performed the ‘Sicilienne’ by Faure.

2nd Place went to Emma Styles playing ‘Work Song’ by Abberley.

1st Place was awarded to a very musical Christian Alsop performing ‘Sweet
Embraceable You by Gershwin.
The Senior Section was very competitive and challenged the adjudicator to select
a clear winner! He awarded :

Highly Commended to Oliver Close who performed the second movement
of the ‘Haydn Trumpet Concert in E Flat Major Hob.VIIe1.’

3rd Place presented a problem for him and so he awarded a joint placing to
Brain Ee performing the ‘Intermezzo No.2 Opus 13’ by Stanford , and
Sophie Bowen-James performing ‘Miss Celie’s Blues’ by Quincy Jones.

1st and 2nd were tight and the distinguishing element on this occasion was
ensemble balance! 2nd Place went to a blistering performance from
Zak Hamieri who played ‘Pass the Peas’ by Parker and 1st Place went to
Charlie Jeong with a near perfect performance of the first and second movements
of the ‘Sonata in G Major for Oboe’ by Sammartini.
A very warm Thank You to Mr. Oliver Stanton, the school accompanist, for his
work over the last two weeks preparing the students and for his supportive work
during the concert. He performed some difficult works and visited many styles
throughout the evening demonstrating his accomplishment and diversity of talent.

THERESA
Theresa –Costume Overview
Senior Production: Wednesday 30th & Thursday 31st May
7pm Adelaide Hall
A change of costume or prop i.e. head scarf or jacket is a direct
representation of a change of character. There are only seven actors
within the cast, and each actor has multiple characters to portray.
Our costumes are just a base to represent the fashion era of
1938 - 1942; due to this we have added these extra props to
demonstrate the change of character. We will visibly make these
changes of costume on stage to further inform the audience of when an
actor changes character. The fashion of WW2 depicts the struggles of
the lower class and the wealth of the aristocracy, in Britain clothing was
strictly rationed as the army limited the supply of khaki and army colours,
which restricted the public’s access to those colours and types of
suitable fabrics for the time. This lead to the hairstyles being elaborate,
as women aimed to turn the attention away from their clothing. 1940s
hair can be replicated with just a few tools: bobby pins, hair elastics,
curlers or a curling iron, a comb and a hairbrush. Throughout this time
the women began to join the work force, they adapted their day wear to
a more masculine approach with suits, skirts at or near knee-length, with
simply-cut blouses or shirts and square-shouldered jackets. Here are

rendition of Theresa by Julia Pascal.

EDINBURGH
The Duke of Edinburgh has a very
exciting year ahead!
What is the Duke of Ed?
The Duke of Ed is an enriching program inviting young people
aged 14-25 to participate in a number of activities over a set length of time.
Participants design their own unique program centered around their interests
and passions and is entirely voluntary.
It is our vision that all young people in Australia are empowered to explore their
potential and achieve success through access and participation in The Duke of
Edinburgh Awards.
Many have newly signed up and many are also continuing from Bronze to Silver
and Gold. If you wish to have your son or daughter involved in this fantastic


TAX FILE NUMBERS-Any student requiring a tax file number this term
needs to collect an application from Mrs. Jones and return it to her by
Friday 25th May 2012. No further applications will be processed by the
school after this date until Term 3.

ATTENTION ANY YEAR 12 interested in the Fitness industry. The
Australian Institute of Personal trainers delivers Certificate III and IV in
Fitness and qualifies graduates to become personal trainers. Anyone
interested in completing training in this area see Mrs. Jones.

Any Year 12 interested in a Ski and Snowboard Instructor Internship
Program in Canada see Mrs. Jones.

Any student interested in becoming a PILOT must sit an AAT Aircrew
Aptitude Test if wishing to join the Airforce. For more information contact
