It is truly an honor to serve as your new international president of Lions Clubs International. With
my 40 years of service as a Lion, I know that we are much more than volunteers. We're an international family working together to strengthen our communities and the clubs we love.
I was just a 21-year-old starting a career when a local businessman invited me to lunch. He didn't
tell me where we were going, but he took me to a lunch hosted by my local Lions club. It was such
a great experience, and the club invited me back to the next meeting...and the meeting after
that. And before long, I was a Lion.
As Lions, it's our mission to serve, but it's also our duty to ask new members to join our clubs. I
hope you will join me in strengthening our membership and our service throughout the
year. Together, we can strengthen the pride!

From Your District Governor - DG Barb Sorkin
Hello fellow Lions of District 13-D
July, 2014 has finally arrived and after 8 days in Toronto I became the Governor of this District. Toronto is a large city with a shopping area underground. I was busy in classes and did not get to see it. There were thousands of Lions in attendance. The Ohio Lions marched in the International Parade on July 5. The Parade is approximately 1 mile. The weather was beautiful and everyone got a little suntan. There was always
something to do at the convention. Great entertainment. The usual thing is to get your picture taken with the incoming International President. That took the better part of the days to have 750+ Lions have their pictures taken. We were assigned a certain time for picture taking.
So now it is time to get to work, I have plans for this year and the big thing is to keep the members we have by keeping them informed of the
new things that are going on in Lionism. Of course, we are always looking for more hands to help with our great WE SERVE projects and our
many fund-raising projects. The International President, Joe Preston's, theme for this year is Strengthen the Pride. We will do that to the best of
our ability.
The year is starting off for me with many meetings and each Club will receive a call as to when I can visit. So how about some of you calling me,
because with 53 clubs that is a lot of phone calls for me. Need to get those far away visits done before those snow flakes show up. If two neighboring clubs would like to go together and have one meeting that would be a great thing to do.

From Your First Vice District Governor - FVDG Bob Allgood
Hello District D Lions,
First I would like to congratulate ZC Lion Betty Robbins for stepping up. You will make a GREAT SVDG.
Wow, what a state convention MD 13 put on. Lion Liz and I had a great time. We met several times with FVP Joe Preston and wife Lion Joni,
what a super couple. I would also like to congratulate PDG Bob Whited for receiving the Presidential medal - will deserved. We hosted a
hospitality room with SVDG/PDG Homer Rice from District H and was told that at one point we had the busiest room!! Next up for me will
be super training weekend at Salt Fork State Park.
Lions of District D remember to just ask one non Lion to come to your meeting, fundraiser, or picnic. Let them see what your clubs are about
then they just might want to join the fun of being a Lion.

SVDG Betty, a member of the Newton Falls Lions Club, certainly is qualified to become our Second Vice District Governor!! Lion Betty
served as Zone 1 Chairperson from 2012 to 2014. She attended Ohio Lions’ first Regional Lions Leadership Institute (RLLI) in Oct. 2013.

CONGRATULATIONS GOVERNOR BARB SORKIN
Many Lions of District 13-D attended the 97th Lions International Convention in Toronto, Ontario Canada. They were there
to witness the installation of Governor Barb Sorkin. It was a proud moment for all of us as we heard her repeat the oath of
office and watched as PCC Dave Gauch removed her ELECT ribbon to officially become our Governor. Lion Patti Gauch was
at her side as well.
Dear Lions,
A year ago, I was a new international president sharing my dreams with Lions around the world. Now, it's my turn to offer my gratitude to each
of you for making those dreams come true. It's been an incredible year thanks to you.
Throughout the year, Lions did a fantastic job of inviting new members into our clubs. We reached out to family and friends during Family and
Friends Month. We put an emphasis on inviting men and women, and we're stronger for it. We used tools like social media to connect with new
members and promote our clubs.
As we near the end of the Lion year, it is so important to keep our new members serving into the next year. Keep the momentum going and
finish the year strong!
Day in and day out, Lions perform countless acts of service that strengthen their communities and touch the lives of millions. It has been an honor to lead hard-working, dedicated men and women like you, who bring help and hope to those who need us most. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your 2013-14 international president.

Annual Art Contest for Kids
Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art
contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For more than 25 years, millions of children from nearly
100 countries have participated in the contest.
The theme of the 2014-15 Peace Poster Contest is "Peace, Love and Understanding." Students, ages 11, 12 or 13 on November 15, are
eligible to participate.
Peace Poster Contest Judging
Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme.
Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art,
peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners.
Peace Poster Contest Awards
International winners will be notified on or before February 1.
- One international grand prize winner will receive US$5,000 and a trip to a special award ceremony.
- Each of the 23 merit award winners will receive a cash award of US$500 and a certificate of achievement.

EYE CARE FOUNDATION ANNUAL
FINANCIAL/ACTIVITY SUMMARY
This report is a financial and activity summary of our Melvin Jones Dist. 13-D Lions Eye Care Foundation (ECF) for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2013–
2014 (July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2014).
The following statements describe District club activity in proving financial support to the ECF:
Forty-eight (48) of the fifty-three (53) District Lions Clubs provided financial support to the ECF. This was a reduction from the previous year when all District clubs participated in providing financial support in a fiscal year to our only District service project.
The amount donated to the Foundation in the fiscal year through direct club contributions was $30,498. This amount is $3,143 lower
the largest ever contributed($33,641) by District clubs in any fiscal year since the formation of the ECF which occurred in the previous 20122013 fiscal year.
The total income for the FY 2013-2014 realized by the Foundation was $63,669. This is a reduction of $2,685 from theprevious year
fiscal year record of $66,354. The ECF did receive record corporate donations from four (4) different organizations, including one (1) donation
of $7,700.These donations, as well as estate bequests and donations from individuals, are encouraged and gratefully received.
ECF expenditures for the fiscal year were $80,030 and this amount is $31,928 higher than the previous year, FY 2012-2013, but $27,571 lower
than FY 2011-2012.Vision screening equipment was purchased by the ECF in both FY 2011-2012 and FY 2013-2014. Of the approximately
$80,000 expended $69,000 was related to direct costs for providing services to residents of our District who needed vision care procedures.
During the fiscal year thirty-one (33) cases were approved by ECF Board of Directors for individuals with confirmed financial need who resided in
our District and needed vision care assistance that individual District clubs could not provide.
During FY 2013-2014 District Lions clubs reported conducting 11,887 vision screenings with an individual referral rate of 13%. All District clubs
are encouraged to provide vision screenings to individuals in their service areas. The ECF can provide the equipment and also training if needed.
The ECF thanks each District Lions Club and each individual District Lion member for your support of our only District Service project, the Melvin Jones District 13-D Lions Eye Care Foundation. Any questions regarding thissummary should be directed to me. Any club that would like a

Eye Care Foundation Magnification Units
Your Melvin Jones District 13D Lions Eye Care Foundation (ECF) has a few magnification units available that can be requested for individuals residing in our District who could enhance their reading/vision ability with the use of a magnifier. Any District 13D Lions Club or individual member
who knows of a District resident who has been examined by an ophthalmologist or optometrist and, through performance of a low vision exam,
has been determined to have an eye disorder that is causing low vision and, who might use their functional vision more effectively by using a low
vision optical magnifying device, should contact their ECF Zone Promoter with a request that the resident be considered for the loan and use of a
recommended and currently available magnification unit.
POLAND LIONS CELEBRATE 20 YEARS OF SERVICE
The Poland Lions Club celebrated their 20th Charter Night Wednesday, July 9, 2014. The event took place at The Byzantine Center at the
Grove.
Guests present were Immediate Past District Governor Tom Zickefoose, Past District Governors John Woodside, Tom Kirkbride and Bob
Whited. Also attending were 2nd Vice District Governor Betty Robbins, Zone 3 Chair Mary Ridenour, as well as Lions from throughout the District. Charter Members Lion Paul Young and Zone 5 Chair Judy Young were present.
Guest Speaker was Past District Governor Bob Whited. He spoke on the history of how the club was formed, including some interesting stories. He was Zone Chair at the time and was instrumental in forming this club. He is a member of the Austintown Lions Club who sponsored the
Poland Lions Club.
Immediate Past District Governor Tom Zickefoose installed the 2014-2015 Officers and inducted 3 new members.

Are You Ready for the Challenge?
Try the Regional Lions Leadership Institute
Everyone faces challenges in their life and our success or failure often depends on our willingness to face these challenges. Last year we had
thirty Lions from across the state accept the challenge to enroll in Ohio’s first Regional Lions Leadership Institute (RLLI).
You might wonder what a RLLI is all about. The RLLI is an intense weekend spent developing your leadership skills. There is nothing about
service projects, fund raising, or membership drives. The weekend is devoted simply to developing your skills as a leader. These skills are of
value not only in your Lions activities but also in your professional career, and your efforts in other community endeavors.
The RLLI will be held at Deer Creek State Park, located at 20635 State Park Road 20, Mt. Sterling, Oh. Classes start on Friday morning at 8:00
am and run through 8:00 pm. On Saturday the classes start at 8:30 am and run until 8:00 pm. Sunday is a short day with classes starting at
8:30 and ending at 2:45.
Examples of some of the sessions in Level One are Motivating Club Members, Working in Teams, Public Speaking and Setting and Reaching
Club Goals.
Examples of some of the sessions in Level Two include Leadership Styles, Conducting Effective Meetings, Public speaking, and Utilizing
Available Resources. Complete agendas for both levels are included in the informational packet that is available at the Ohio Lions website
ohio-lions.org .
The cost for the weekend is $115.00 and that includes everything except your breakfast and your transportation. Rooms are two person
rooms unless you want to pay an additional $50.00 per night.
The RLLI Level One is open to any Lion who has never held a leadership position or who has served as a C lub Officer, Zone Chair or
Cabinet member. Level One enrollees can’t have participated in a LCI Leadership Institute.
The RLLI Level Two is open to any Lion who has taken the RLLI Level One, The Emerging Leaders Institute, or is serving as a Second
Vice District Governor.
Your District Global Leadership Team Coordinator would be more than willing to provide you with the name of a last year’s enrollee from your district who could answer any questions you might still have. We encourage you to enroll soon before enrollment
closes.

SEBRING LIONS CLUB CELEBRATES 35TH CHARTER NIGHT
Congratulations to the Sebring Lions Club on their 35th Charter Night. The event was held on Sunday, June 29, 2014 in Murphy Auditorium at
Copeland Oaks Retirement Center.
Guests for the event included District 13-D Tom Zickefoose, District Governor Elect Barb Sorkin, 2nd Vice District Governor Elect Betty Robbins, Immediate Past District Governor John Woodside, Past District Governor Tom Kirkbride, Zone Chairs Dee Pamer and Elva Summers.
Members from various clubs in the District attended, with West Point Lions having 16 members in attendance. Charter Members present were
Lions Joe Amabeli, Gary Martin, John Schoen and Jim Webber. Sebring Mayor Michael Pinkerton presented a Proclamation to President Liz
Spiker.
Dr. Richard Lehrer was the speaker for the evening, presenting a very informative program, “Why Do Lions Support and Perform Eye Screening?” Questions followed. We also got to see the Melvin Jones Eye Care Foundation’s newest purchase, the Plusoptix S12, a device to detect
vision disorders in children.

Providing Life Skills for Students
LCIF's Lions Quest program has impacted more than 13 million students around the world through social and emotional learning.
As a renowned program for positive life skills for youth, our partners are taking notice – NoVo Foundation recently provided a
US$300,000 grant to support Lions Quest.
Lions Quest is also revising its printed curriculum. The resulting curriculum products will be more modern and relevant to issues
facing today's youth, like bullying and career readiness.
Saving Sight and Preventing Blindness
Lions and LCIF are committed to saving sight and preventing blindness where needed most. In China, blinding trachoma has affected eye health
for many people. Through LCIF SightFirst grants, our Foundation is supporting the effort towards elimination of trachoma as a public health concern by 2016.
The fight against trachoma and other eye diseases expands around the world. In May 2014, Lions Clubs International leadership and the Lions
of Georgia (USA) joined former U.S. President and Lion Jimmy Carter in a signing ceremony to commemorate an expansion of the Lions-Carter
Center SightFirst Initiative addressing the major causes of preventable blindness in Ethiopia, Uganda, Mali and Niger. This partnership also
helped celebrate the elimination of river blindness in Colombia last year, a major milestone.
