Pastor`s Passage - First Baptist Church of Etowah, Tennessee Podcast
Church Chronicle MARCH 2015 Volume: 61 Number: 3 A Publication of the First Baptist Church of Etowah, Tennessee Pastor’s Passage New Sermon Series March 1st - April 5th The Shocking Servant (Isaiah 52:13-15) The Misunderstood Messiah (Isaiah 53:1-3) The Suffering Substitute (Isaiah 53:4-6) The Silent Savior (Isaiah 53:7-9) The Victorious Lord (Isaiah 53:10-12) AMOS My newsletter articles for each month this year are surveys of the Minor Prophets which are the last twelve books in the Old Testament. We studied Hosea in January, and Joel in February. This month is Amos. Amos is not a professional prophet. He says, “I was no prophet, nor was I a son of a prophet, but I was a sheepbreeder and a tender of sycamore fruit” (7:14). He was from a rural area south of Jerusalem. He is sent forth by God to leave his homeland and preach a harsh message of judgment to the northern kingdom of Israel. Amos fearlessly prophesied by the Spirit of God within him (3:8). His message included three sermons and five visions—warning of coming disaster because of complacency, idolatry, and the oppression of the poor. But because of the peace & prosperity of Israel during this period, his message falls on deaf ears. Chapters 1—2 Pronouncement of Judgment The prophet Amos names specific sins of various nations and pronounces eight judgments upon the nations. Then Amos describes the transgressions of the people of Israel and Judah and warns of future destruction & condemnation from the Lord. Among the sins of the nations and the Jewish people is the worship of false gods. Chapters 3—6 Reasons for Judgment In these chapters, Amos delivers three sermons exposing Israel’s sin. Among the transgressions in Israel are greed, excessive taxation, and cruel oppression of the poor. God condemns those who “crush the needy” (4:1), take bribes, and deprive the poor of justice (5:12). Though the people profess to follow God and offer sacrifices to Him, their hypocrisy is evident in their excessive lifestyles. There is total absence of social justice and morality. (Sounds very much like America today!) Chapters 7—9 Visions of Judgment and Restoration Amos has five visions that depict what God will do to punish Israel. Yet in spite of all the people have done wrong. God still loves them and promises there will come a future day of restoration and blessing. Amos is an example that you don’t have to be professionally trained to speak up for God when you see human injustice or sinful behavior. Amos spoke for God because he was obedient to God. You too can be God’s person. Listen to God and do what He asks. Then watch as the power of God works through you as you serve Him! I love you all—Ridge www.fbcetowah.org 1 Church Chronicle volume 61 • number 3 March 1, 2015 Sunday School: Max & Deborah Calhoun Worship: Mike & Diane Vinson, Luther Starkey March 8, 2015 Sunday School: Wade Shultz, Parker Morgan Worship: Pam Aderhold, James Carr, David James March 15, 2015 Sunday School: Eleanor Harper, Eddie Perry Worship: Tom & Tonya Balkom, Amber Plemons March 22, 2015 Sunday School: Carolyn Cantrell, Missy Cantrell Worship: Chris James, Russell Shultz, Mary Jane Purkey March 29, 2015 Palm Sunday Sunday School: Ralph Jones, Joretta Barefield Worship: Eleanor Harper, Parker Morgan, Luther Starkey Deacon Prayer Schedule March 1 March 8 March 15 March 22 March 29 Paul Walker Lester Wheeler Johnny Coe Mike Cresswell John Forgety Our Record Speaks February 1 February 8 February 15 February 22 $ 7,484.41 $ 3,996.82 $ 3,300.06 $ 4,008.88 Please help support the Children’s Department by donating plastic Easter eggs and individually wrapped candy for the Easter Egg Hunt.
