KENTUCKY ADULT EDUCATION LEARNING FOR LIFE Kentucky Adult Education’s core business is to raise the educational levels of eligible students by providing academic instruction that leads to strong literacy skills and GED attainment, which are the gateways to postsecondary education and highly skilled employment. Adult Learning Center Start Center Prepare for GED test Brush up your skills in Reading, Math, or Language with: Classes One-on-one tutoring Computer programs (on and off-campus) Learn English as a Second Language Prepare for and pass the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment and the Workkeys Hours of Operation Adult Learning Center at HCC Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Thursday 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM The Staff Facilities at the ALC/ Start Center The front desk/reception area is located on the second floor of the STC. This will be your first stop each day to sign in. Facilities When you enter our reception area, please sign in and write the time you arrived under the “In” column and check the ABE/GED column. When you leave, fill in the time under the “Out” column. Work Folder File Cabinet Your next stop should be the work folder file cabinet. You should pull your work folder and sign in by entering the time you arrived. When you leave, you should also enter the time and return the folder to the cabinet. This folder needs to stay at the learning center and should not be taken home. Facilities Located on the second floor of the STC, the computer lab in the open area can be used for: • Word Processing • Internet access • Educational software Please remember that food or drink is not allowed in the computer lab and only educational websites may be accessed. Facilities STC 204 is one of the classrooms for the Adult Learning Center. It is used primarily for reading and language classes. Facilities STC 214 is an all-purpose room used for small group classes, an individual tutoring room, and a quiet room for testing. Facilities STC 218 is used for both small- and large-group testing as well as for official GED and COMPASS testing. Facilities STC 106 is the only classroom located on the 1st floor and is used for the math classes. Facilities Located on the 1st floor of STC, the Cyber Café can be used as a student lounge. Computer kiosks are available for student use, as well as snack and drink machines. Students are welcome to eat lunch, study, or take breaks in this area. Facilities In addition to the Cyber Cafe, there is a full-service grill. Breakfast and lunch are served from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Duncan’s Grill is open to the college and the community. Schedule of Classes Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 8:30am until 12:30pm Math Reading Language Arts/Grammar English as a Second Language (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) College Math Bridge Program (Spring, Summer, and Fall Sessions) Tutoring by appointment *These are non-credit classes & do not count toward your Financial Aid Other Locations Henderson County Detention Center GED Program for Corrections Henderson County Public Library Free computer/online access to KYAE programs TABE Test The TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education) enrollment test is a diagnostic assessment in reading, math, and language that shows what areas a student needs to review. Based on this assessment, together we will create a plan to help you meet your goals. A follow-up TABE will be required of students to show progress in deficient areas. CASAS The CASAS (Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System) will be used as an enrollment test for English as a Second Language students. The CASAS is a diagnostic assessment in reading and English language usage. A follow-up CASAS will be required of students to show progress in deficient areas. PowerPath screens for: Attention Challenges Visual Stress Syndrome Vision and Hearing impairments Housekeeping No smoking except in your vehicle No food or drink is allowed in the Computer Area No cell phone use is permitted during classes or testing Courtesy phone available for student use in the Cyber Café Bus Shuttle Service The Henderson Area Rapid Transit (HART) Bus System serves Henderson Community College on weekdays. Shuttle service to the college begins at the main transfer station on the corner of Third and Main Streets. The shuttle departs from the transfer station at: 7:30 AM 11:30 AM 3:30 PM It is important to note that there is not an official departure time from the college. Students needing to leave campus must be at the HCC bus stop by 7:30 AM, 11:30 AM, or 3:30 PM so as not to miss the shuttle. Inclement Weather Classes may be cancelled due to inclement weather. Look for Henderson Community College in the closing list (not Henderson County Schools) Students should listen to: WMSK (1550 AM) WSTO (96.1 FM) WSON (860 AM) WKDQ (99.5 FM) Should school be cancelled by a local school district, off-campus classes that are taught at schools in that district will be cancelled. Inclement Weather Sometimes stuff happens. That’s why you need to sign up for SNAP!, the Safety Notification Alert Process. Sign up as a first time user at kctcs.edu/snap and you’ll receive text messages for campus emergencies via your cell phone or email. Follow us on Facebook! Extras We also know how to have FUN on campus. Many cookouts, parties, and events take place throughout the year, and ALC students are always invited. GED TEST GED Regulations Scoring: Minimum score of 145 on each test GED Pass High School Equivalency: 145 GED College Ready: 165 GED College Ready + Credit: 175 Official GED Exam Testing Location: Henderson Community College Sullivan Technology Building (Second Floor – Room 218) GED TEST Tester must be 19 or be officially withdrawn from the last school attended. The 2014 GED test will cost $30 per each of the 4 modules, for a total of $120. Tester must present a current government-issued photo ID on testing days. To register…. • Test is computer-based. • Item types: hot spot, drag-and-drop, short answer, extended response, fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice. • Multiple choice have 4 answer options. • Test-takers will be given a small dry-erase board with Expo markers. 2014 GED TEST • There is a reading comprehension component and a writing component. • The number of questions will vary. • It takes about 3 hours to complete. Test-takers will be given a 10 minute break. • 75% of texts are informational-nonfiction and workplace contexts. (No poetry!) • Writing: analysis of arguments & use of evidence, structure, clarity, grammar, usage. • It is suggested that test-takers use 45 minutes to read a source text and compose their response. • Need some keyboarding skills. Reasoning through Language Arts • The number of questions will vary. • It takes about 75 minutes to complete. Economics, US History, 15% 20% Civics and Government, 50% Social Studies Geography & the World, 15% • The number of questions will vary. • It takes about 95 minutes to complete. • It includes short answer questions. Earth & Space Science, 20% Physical Science, 40% Science Life Science, 40% • 115 Minutes • Calculator will be permitted • A variety of item types are used in the test, including multiple-choice, drag-and-drop, hot spot, and fill-in-theblank. • Two sections: • Short calculator-prohibited section • Longer calculator-allowed section.
