GED Information Sheet Tennessee A Guide to Obtaining Your GED GED - What is it? The GED, or General Educational Development test, provides adults who did not complete a formal high school program the opportunity to certify their attainment of high school-level academic knowledge and skills. The GED Test is comprised of five content area assessments: • Language Arts, Reading • Language Arts, Writing • Mathematics • Science • Social Studies Get Your GED in 4 Easy Steps! 1. Meet the requirements. You must be 18 years old and have not received a high school diploma or high school equivilency certificate. If you are 17, to take the GED, you must: • Present the GED Test Examiner an age waiver signed by the superintendent of the school system in which you reside • Not be enrolled in high school • Must be currently enrolled in a state approved GED Option Program 2. Enroll in a GED prep course. Although it is not required, a prep course will give you the knowledge and skills necessary to take the GED exam. Free GED preparatory classes are available throughout the state of Tennessee. Let the testing center know if you have a physical or learning disability and need special assistance. You will need to present documentation of your disability before you take the exam. If English is not your first language, you can request to take the exam in Spanish, French, or Braille. You must register for the GED exam in person. You will need to bring the following items: • Driver's License/State ID • Eligibility for Enrollment in Adult Education Program • Proof of GED Pre-test • $55 in cash or GED test voucher 4. Pass the exam. The GED is a long series of tests lasting 7 hours and 35 minutes. Each test is timed. If you fail one or more of the tests, only the failed tests have to be re-taken. To pass the GED, you must earn a minimum total standard score of 2250 on all 5 tests and a minimum standard score of 410 in each subject area.
