Greetings fellow Abate members, I just came from our Jack Daniels Experience Fund raiser where we were able to raise over $13,000 for the organization. I know what some of you are thinking “Why is Abate, a safeety organization, partners with Jack Daniel’s?” Well my friends as you all know by now, I believe very strongly in rights and freedoms so I will never say you can’t drink. Myself, Abate and Jack Daniels want people to be responsible. To be responsible is to know your limits. This doesn’t only apply to alcohol. If you are tired, cold, hungry or otherwise distracted you are not going to be at the top of your game. Be responsible... slow down, take a break, get a snack, stretch your legs and clear your head. Do whatever you have to but above all else be safe. And that my friends is why we felt being partners with Jack Daniels, who’s tag is all about responsibility is good. Volume 37 Issue 6 Next up is the 37th Annual State Rally @ Menoken Grove on June 8th - 10th. In response to your requests the weenie bite will be back in the game rotation this year along with Biker Balls, Biker Jousting and more. We have BATTERY, the #1 Metallica tribute band and RELEVANT a 90s band - and TWICE AS HARD a classic rock band to rock the dance floor all night long. Along with all the great vendors and wonderful people this is a weekend you don’t want to miss. Our Fargo site is under construction and on schedule to be up and running by the 1st of June. We are super excited to have a visible presence in West Fargo. We are also looking for support in the eastern part of the state to help spread the word about Abate and all we stand for and do for our communities across the state. Last but not least I wanted to thank those brave souls that rode to Washburn with us after our ABATE Open House. Also, thanks to Dairy Queen of Bismarck for the ice cream when we got back. Along with Eric Freedom Riders M.C. and Justin Vinje our ND AIM attorney. Once again an awesome attendance of Freedom fighters from around the country. Attending these types of conferences makes one appreciate living in good old North Dakota. We are so fortunate that we do not have the type of horror stories that other states are dealing with. We do not have the Motorcycling profiling issues to any great extent nor do we have the Motorcycle only checkpoints. The list goes on and on with the different states reporting on their legal and safety issues. Even listening how other states have no relationship with their local Departments of Highway Safety offices. It also gives us the knowledge of what is always coming from a Federal level towards motorcyclist. Your Education Department is running along smoothly our Fargo location will be done by our June 1 deadline. We have over 1,000 students registered for classes already. Look for some new television commercials coming your way this summer with sharing the road and ride responsible campaigns. Have you being doing your part to promote our great organization Remember we will not be able to make our goals of Volume 37 Issue 6 doubling our membership numbers unless we each participate in this event. It would be simple if we each signed up one new member we would meet our goal. Well it looks like riding season is FINALLY here. We had a few days here and there, but the coming weeks look to be warmer. Remember to practice safety when you ride. There is a lot of dirt on the streets because of all of the construction going on all over town, and in all the surrounding towns around Minot. Be especially careful of all the trucks we are sharing the streets and highways with. Why not sign up for the ERC class, and get a tune up on your skills? Volume 37 Issue 6 We went to the flood fund raiser at the civic center on Saturday. Kent was there with the ABATE trailer. Some riders from the Ice Box Riders in Minot, rode down to display there bikes. THANKS GUYS for helping out! We looked the classic cars, and the National Guard display. We also got to listen to Mylo Hudensbuhler. I don’t know who was funnier, Mylo or Kent. Just kidding Kent! All in all it was a good weekend in Bismarck. Coming events for this month; The ABATE State Rally in Menoken on the 8th -10th. This will be a good time to renew acquaintance’s from around the state, and have a good biker time. The District 2 Bikini Bike wash on the 30th, and the Minot Harley shop from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Come and help raise money for ABATE, and get your bike washed at the same time. Win Win! I see what happens when I forget to put the next meeting notice in the newsletter, hardly no one comes, so no excuse for next month, Monday June 4th, at the Rollin Pin Restaurant, 7:00 pm. Come at 6:00 pm and join us for supper. Any one can attend, and if your not a member, come and check us out, and maybe sign up. We are always looking for new members, and welcome back old ones. Janet really did a bang up job with this one. There were many door prizes, and a lot of things for fund raising. I know that an event of this magnitude, takes a lot of work, so thanks Janet. She promised some other events to come, so watch the news from the office. There was a silent auction on Jack stuff, and a live auction on some bigger things. There was a full life sized statue up for auction, one of only 2 in the upper Midwest, that came home to Minot to live with John and Sally. We know he will be happy there. 6 Treat yourself... you yo urse elff To a relaxing facial. Rejuvenate your skin with Microdermabrasions, healthy peels and full body exfoliation. I really haven’t had much time for riding since I got back from the Florida trip but have been envious of the bikes I see from the window of the tractor cab rolling down the highway but I know soon I will be the one enjoying those days. Menoken is fast approaching and we can hope for some sunny skies and warm weather for the gathering. Every weekend in the summer there seems to be a ride or more which isn’t out of range for most people in the state. It is seldom I turn the TV on and I seem to keep in touch with news events either written in the papers online or printed publications which I guess is my way of filtering out what I don’t want to listen to. I read recently of a motorcyclist being hit in Grand Forks by someone making a left turn and my thoughts immediately went to the safety programs and public awareness of bikes. This was followed by the reading of Abates part in getting the Michigan states helmet law removed which I believe is part of freedom of choice and living in America. Just last night I read with interest an article that has hit the news media out of the state of South Carolina that officers have for the second time since last July ticketed an individual for having a replica of a pair of testicles hanging from their rear bumper. Well the first thing that came to mind was it was a good thing my bike was in the trailer coming through that state on the way back from Florida as yes I have a pair on the back of my bike and also a pair hanging on the back of the small trailer I pull behind my bike. I always enjoy it when a little old lady passes me on interstate and you see them smiling or laughing and you know what they are laughing about. But in our world of political correctness maybe one more of my freedoms of self expression will soon be taken away by our government. Yes I know it is just a small thing but to me there is nothing more offensive than seeing guys walking around with their pants down to their knees so I guess until the fines get to be too much my jewels will keep dangling on the back of my bike. Until next time ride free ride safe. Doug Hursman drhur@utma.com 8 Volume 37 Issue 6 Steele - Traill - Cass Hello everyone, we hope everybody is doing well and riding hard, but safe of course. First things first, we have decided to change the day of our gatherings to the first Thursday of the month at 7pm. Reason for this, we are going to try a little earlier in the evening and over the summer there appears to be many other events on the second Thursday. Case in point, Moorhead, MN is holding Bike Night at the Moorhead Center Mall parking lot. There are vendors, dealerships, a beer garden, and much more to enjoy so anyone interested come check it out, it’s garrentied to be a good time. The new building and course are well under way and by the time you read this they should be ready to go for classes. There was a slight mix up in communication on the exact location, we had the understanding that it was going up directly behind the Hooligan’s strip mall in south, West Fargo, but it is actually just south of the strip mall on Shyenne.. So your all invited to drive by and take a look. As you all already know it’s that time again, time for the 37th Annual State Rally at Menoken Grove. Remember it’s a member’s only party so make sure you have your membership card and ID ready at the gate when you get there to make things go a little quicker for you and the people running the gate. So come out hang with good friends and rock out to good music, you won’t be disappointed. We ask that everyone par-take in as many of the rides and fund raisers as you can as the summer is jam-packed with them, because it’s helping a good cause, hangin’ with good friends, and just another reason to get out and ride. We would like to thank The Harwood Hideout for becoming a business sponsor. We are grateful to have your support. That being said our next gathering will be at the Harwood Hideout on Thursday June 7, at 7pm. We hope to see you there. I’m probably forgetting something, if I am, I’m sorry. So until next time, have fun and be safe. Hello Abate People! PLEASE NOTE: next District meeting - 5:30 pm, May 24th at Dean’s Steakhouse in Mandan. We will ride to the Wet Spot in Glen Ullin. Everyone is welcome to join us. The 37th Abate State Rally at Menoken Grove is almost here! We have been waiting since last year! It’ss gonna be a blast. I can’t wait to see all of our friends. We have been going for 22 years and it’s always been fun rain or shine and even hail! We had our April meeting at the Tumbleweed in Lincoln. I would like to thank the Tumbleweed for becoming an ABATE sponsor. Tricia and I will be entering the ABATE truck and trailer in the State Fair Parade on July 21st. The paperwork has been submitted to the ND State Fair Parade committee. Alice Thompson and Tom Birkholz volunteered to enter the ABATE truck and a trailer in the Mandan 4th of July parade. We are working on the details for the District 9/10 Toy Run for this year. Will have more for you next month. We are discussing some combined ABATE district rides. This is what we have come up with: Date: August 11 - Route 1804-1806: Ride down to Mobridge on Hwy 1804 and back on Hwy 1806. Tentative plan is for District 2 to ride down and meet up with district 9/10 North either in Underwood or Washburn. From there the group would go to the ABATE office to meet up with 9/10 South. The route is 250 to 300 miles so we should be leaving Bismarck about 10 am. For lunch we could stop at Beaver Bay on 1804 and for supper we can stop at Prairie Knights Casino on 1806. There isn’t much open in Mobridge on Sundays so this should be a Saturday run. Date: September 8 - Lindeman Museum in Golden Valley: For this ride we would meet in Riverdale or Pick City then we will do a group ride to Golden Valley. We could make this a small fun run by stopping at some of the sponsors in the area and maybe Rick can work with a couple of sponsors in the area to set up a lunch and snacks. Schedule for the next meetings: 5:30 pm, May 24th at Dean’s Steakhouse in Mandan - ride to Wet Spot in Glen Ullin; 5:30 pm, June 21st. ABATE office in Bismarck – ride to Bayside Resort, 5:30 pm, July 26th Hideaway in Mandan - ride to Center-Hanover-back to Burger King in Mandan, Until next time… We will have lunch and talk about our Abate/Toy Run. The Toy Run will be on July 28. The route will be Bowman, Rhame, Ludlow, Buffalo(gas stop), Reva, Reeder, Scranton and Bowman. It’s about a 180 mile ride. Should be a blast. We have the Share the Road signs out for MAY MC Awareness Month. We have Sold 80 at Jabbr’s so far. It’s a good place to put them so everyone can see them. MSP classes are up and running. They will be in Bowman this weekend. You Can get half of your money back if you’re a Abate Member. Plus $50 in Safety Gear. That’s a good deal and it could save your life. Please look twice And look again. Please don’t Drink and Ride. It’s the cause of most MC Crashes. There has been two fatalities early this year so far. Not a good start. AB55 provides a technical correction for 2006 Wisconsin Act 466, moving the penalty provisions from the courts to an administrative function of the DMV. All right-of-way violators that cause serious injury or death on Wisconsin’s roadways will be subject to up to a one thousand dollar fine and up to a nine month license suspension and must complete a DOT approved rightof-way awareness class before being reinstated. Also, AB55 adds a mandatory minimum of thirty minutes of motorcycle awareness training in all drivers’ education classrooms throughout the state. The Michigan legislature overwhelmingly approved the measure with broad bipartisan support, and with Gov. Snyder’s signature on April 12th Michigan now joins 30 other states in amending their mandatory helmet law in favor of adult choice. “The new law modernizes Michigan’s outdated mandatory helmet law, which was a holdover from bygone days leaving Michigan in the minority as one of only 20 states left enforcing an empty federal mandate,” said Vince Consiglio, President of ABATE of Michigan. “It is ABATE of Wisconsin’s hope that the education and awareness portions of this law will help promote responsible driving on Wisconsin’s roadways and make our roads safer for all roadway users,” said the motorcyclists’ rights organization in a prepared statement. The proposal to update Michigan’s mandatory helmet law was introduced in the Senate by Senator Phil Pavlov (R) St. Clair. “Every year, millions of dollars leave our state because of Michigan’s outdated mandatory helmet law,” Pavlov said. “This bipartisan plan will keep our dollars here, attract even more tourists to Michigan and help our state in these tough economic times.” Safety studies show the most dangerous time for motorcyclists is their first year riding, peaking in the first month. For motorcycle riders, their first 30 days are about four times more risky than their entire second year. A study by the Highway Loss Data Institute shows 22% of nearly 57,000 collision claims from 2003 to 2007 occurred within 30 days of a new policy taking effect. The claim rate then dropped by one-third in the second month and by almost two-thirds after six months. The facts also show that with proper training and responsible riding will these risks are reduced. Allowing motorcyclists to ride helmet-free could also generate more than $1 billion in direct and indirect revenue, according to a recent Michigan Consultants study. The new law gives Michigan the strictest requirements for riding helmet-free of any state that has modified mandatory helmet laws for adult choice. To ride helmet-free in Michigan, motorcyclists must: * Be at least 21 years old. * Have at least two years of riding experience or undergo special safety training. * Carry at least $20,000 in additional medical insurance. 14 DATA SHOWS HIGHEST RISK FOR NEW MOTORCYCLISTS QUOTABLE QUOTE: “The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example.” ~ Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), British statesman June 2012 “Let’s Ride Together” Motorcycle Tire Maintenance and Proper Inspection A visual inspection of your motorcycle tires is something you should be doing before you ride. It will only take a few moments to look for anything out of the ordinary, such as punctures that could cause a loss of pressure or a dangerous blowout In older tires, bulging or cracking may also occur. For best results, put your bike on a Big Wheel Motorcycle Lift and spin the tires slowly to properly inspect the entire road surface of the tires. Also check your tire pressure at least once weekly. It is crucial and affects your handling, ride quality, and fuel economy. Even the smallest adjustments can make an improve these. Having a properly inflated tire will also cause the tires not wear as fast and wear evenly. The best time to check your tire pressure is when the tires are cool before you ride. Reference your owner’s manual or for the correct tire pressure. Tread depth is also important. The way to check your tread depth is to place a quarter in the tread groove. Ensure that the top of the tire does not extend below the top of Washington’s head. If it does, it may be time to look into replacing the tire. With these tips, you are sure to have a safe, smooth ride, as well as increase the life of your tires! Volume 37 Issue 6 Motorcycle Safety Tip: Tire Troubles If you're on a motorcycle and you suspect you've got a flat tire, time is of the essence: your first priority is to ensure you can safely pull over and get out of the flow of traffic. Applying brakes can cause a loss of control, so carefully maneuver your bike with a firm grip on the handlebars, without fighting the bike too much. Avoid downshifting or braking until you're at a slower speed, and if you're certain you know which tire is deflated, apply brakes to the other wheel lightly and gradually. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation reminds you that some motorcycles have linked brakes, so keep that in mind when and if you apply the stoppers when you've got a flat tire, since that can unintentionally add brake pressure to both wheels. Flat tires can be caused by a number factors, including wet weather (which lubricates sharp objects, making them easier to penetrate rubber), and high performance tires (which are stickier than most, and tend to pick up more foreign objects.) Keep in mind that many flats are caused by riding with low tire pressure. Always do conduct a tire inspection before each and every ride. Doing so will ensure your ride is safe and you will return home from yet another great adventure. MRF E-MAIL NEWS Motorcycle Riders Foundation 236 Massachusetts Ave. NE | Suite 510 | Washington, DC 20002-4980 202-546-0983 (voice) | 202546-0986 (fax) A number of years ago the MRF formed the Alcohol Awareness committee as an advisory committee to the Board of Dirctors. The reason for this committess and the ongoing work is due to the increasing awareness of government agencies of the issue of impaired riding. Impaired riding has been a n issue for many years but in the past decade it gained prominence to the point it is a major part of any discussion where motorcycle safety is the topic. the MRF board tasked the committee to develop a program part of which will present the MRF position in impaired riding. The following position paper was presented to the Board at the September 2009 BOD meeting and with minor adjustments agreed upon and approved. Impaired Riding Position Paper Impaired riding is increasingly becoming a serious problem causing escalating attention in both the motorcycling community, and the various bureaucracies with oversight of motorcycling fatality statistics. As awareness of this issue increasees, individuals and organizations alike must make decisions as to how they will address the concerns of riding impaired. Impaired riding occurs in a variety of conditions, the most common and probably of most concern is alcohol. Drinking and riding is the most obvious and the most frequently pointed to as a cause of concern. However, impaired riding is also a condition that occurs under the influence of prescription drugs, illegal drugs, and over the counter drugs. 16 Impaired riding is sited a the cause of Fourty-one percent of the 2,182 motorcycle riders who died in singlevehicle crashes in 2007, they had BAC level of .08 or greater, (NTSA).vMotorcyclists must face the fact that this number is the one area where the fatalities are in our direct control. If we want to bring about a reduction in the number of impaired riding fatalities each uf us must watch out for ourselves and those we ride with. The Motorcycle Riders Foundation, MRF, has taken the position that individual responsibility is the ultimate way to reduce fatalities. We encourage organziataions and riding groups to do what they can to take proactive efforts promoting unimpaired riding. Through outreach campaigns of the risks associated with riding impaired; using education and awareness of the various ways one can become impaired; and promoting and increasing efforts to watch out for fellow riders, we can make a difference and perhaps save a life and at the same time reduce the fatality numbers. www.mrf.org CYCLES, COLOR & CHROME SEE US FOR ALL YOUR TIRE NEEDS CHECK OUT THE NEW MICHELIN COMMANDER II OR THE DUNLOP AMERICAN ELITE THE HIGH MILEAGE, ECONOMICAL ALTERNATIVE TO OEM TIRES FOR HARLEY! “IT’S WORTH THE TRIP” 405 HIWAYY 49 S BEULAH BEEUL ULAH H ND ND 701-873-4395 70 701 01 877 June 2012 “Let’s Ride Together” Volume 37 Issue 6 Now Authorized Dealership “Ready to Race” 1101 Airport Road Bismarck 222-1999 Mon - Fri - 9am - 6pm Sat 9am - 1pm fullthrottlemotorsports.org Open Sundays! MRF Meets with US DOT Secretary to Discuss MotorcycleOnly Roadside Checkpoints Recently the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), along with ABATE of Illinois, sat down with United States Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Ray LaHood to discuss a few key motorcycle issues. First and foremost is the issue of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) funding of mandatory motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. LaHood let his arsenal of safety experts defend the checkpoints. It was revealed that the only state to apply for the funds was Georgia. No other states expressed any interest in the federal program. There was a lively debate about the checkpoint issue, and we eventually had to agree to disagree on the effectiveness, fairness, and resource worthiness of mandatory motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. As of now, NHTSA does not have any plans for future funding of these checkpoints. We also discussed the Department’s position on E-15 blended fuel, they don’t have one. Volume 37 Issue 6 to support the inclusion of the language that would prohibit federal funding of motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. Call immediately. This will also be the key issue we lobby for next week at Bikers Inside the Beltway. By the time you read this report the MRF will have hosted the 4th Annual Michael “Boz” Kerr Memorial “Bikers Inside the Beltway” national lobby day. This is a day in which Riders from across the country are encouraged to meet with the legislators from their state and talk about legislation that effects motorcycles. The MRF assists in support and scheduling. This is proving to be very effective in building good working relationships in Washington, DC. You can support the MRF by joining at www.mrf.org. Call to Action - Help End the Federal Funding of the Motorcycle-Only Roadside Checkpoints The US Congress has moved forward on the highway bill. They recently named the Conferees that will negotiate the differences between the House and the Senate. This is a crucial juncture for the legislation that would end the motorcycleonly roadside checkpoints. The language is in the HR 7, (the House bill) but not in the US House passed bill, HR 4348 and not in the Senate bill, S 1813. Its our goal to have the conference adopt the language into the final report. The conference is sure to be lengthy as the two bills are wildly different. The House bill, H.R. 4348, is a short-term extension of federal highway funds that includes a requirement to approve the Keystone oil pipeline. The Senate bill, S. 1813, is a two-year, $109 billion extension. Here is where you come in. Below is the list of every member of the Highway bill conference committee.
