Handel`s Messiah
A N O T E F R O M WC U P R E S I D E N T P H Y L L I S C R A M E R
Many years ago, Fred Portz, along with his wife, JoAnn, sparked the idea of a free
community concert for the residents of Waukesha and its environs. It is in loving memory
of Fred and JoAnn, their long time participation as WCU members and their generous
endowment to our organization that we continue this annual time honored tradition. We
anticipate that Handel’s glorious strains will carry you into the Easter season with lifted
spirits in anticipation of the rebirth of spring.
You, our patrons, are an integral part of the Waukesha Choral Union in your attendance
[and participation] as well as your continuing support of the choral arts in our
community. We are fortune to have the collaboration of a superb orchestra. And we
embrace the fine guest soloists who put the “icing on the cake”! We take great pride in
being able to provide quality performances worthy of your generous patronage.
Our final performance of the season will be on Saturday, May 2, 2015 here on the Carroll
University campus in the Humphrey Memorial Chapel. For his farewell concert as our
esteemed and beloved Artistic Director, “Ernie” has prepared a repertoire of resounding
choruses from Broadway shows and operas that will have you humming along, snapping
your fingers, and swaying in your seats! You won’t want to miss this one!

Donating to the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) is one step away from joining the
performance. Community support keeps the stage lights on, provides arts education opportunities
to 50,000 children in Waukesha County schools, and helps our regional economy flourish. With no
government funding, UPAF – the single largest funder for 15 of our area’s largest performing arts
groups – relies on the generosity of individuals and organizations in Southeastern Wisconsin to
raise essential operating funds to sustain entertainment excellence for all to enjoy.

M E S S AG E F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R
Welcome to the Waukesha Choral Union’s presentation of Handel’s Messiah. We have had
the pleasure of offering this free community concert event for over 30 years. I wonder
if Handel ever thought this masterpiece among oratorios would become part of the
standard choral repertoire around the world.
essiah premiered in April of 1742 as a fundraiser for a foundling hospital in Dublin,
M
Ireland. It is now performed in many languages throughout the year all across the world.
How appropriate that this performance is free to the public and sponsored by several
generous benefactors in our community. Handel composed this most well-known of his
masterworks, during a time of turmoil in his life. He had experienced several financial
setbacks and was nearly destitute and depressed. Even under these circumstances,
Handel managed to create an enduring masterpiece, which eventually lifted him out of
his misery.
e live in equally trying times. I hope the music inspires us to leave with uplifted spirits
W
and a zeal to make our world a better place.
Enjoy this gift of music to you!
