About the Pack
Hwyl Dan 7 Pecyn Glas is designed for use in the Foundation Phase classroom. It is the
third pack to be used with children at the beginning of their journey in learning Welsh in the
Primary School.
The pack is organised into 16 units. Each unit in the pack has a new language focus, except
for the first two revision unit and the last revision unit. There are also general units. There
is a scheme of work to accompany each unit. The scheme of work includes a range of
focussed activities to introduce language patterns. It is not the intention that all tasks
should be used, choose or adapt a range of appropriate tasks suitable for your pupils. The
focussed tasks should be introduced to a group or whole class and then made available for
use in enhanced provision. The children should be encouraged to use the language patterns
taught throughout the day, in all six areas of learning and at every opportunity.
Enhanced Provision
Having established continuous provision in the learning environment, practitioners need to
plan enhanced provision. Whilst considering the interests of the children, the practitioner
should enhance and enrich areas of the learning environment by providing resources to
challenge and develop the children’s ideas. To consolidate and extend learning, enhanced
provision should also allow children time to practise skills learnt from focused teaching,
independently.
Literacy & Numeracy Framework & Key Skills
There is reference to The Literacy & Numeracy Framework (LNF) in the planning. Pupils
need to be able to use their Literacy and Numeracy skills effectively across all curricular
areas. The Literacy and Numeracy skills taught should be transferred to and consolidated
in their Welsh lessons. There is reference to non-statutory key skills of ICT and Thinking
skills. Individual practitioners will need to plan in more detail in their short term planning in
line with school policy & classroom requirements.
Hard copies of games and ICT resources are included in the pack. Reference is also made to
the Joio Dan 5 and Fflic a Fflac (Blue) pack, various books e.g. Paent Gwlyb, Anifeiliaid
Difyr and other resources.

Schemes of work
The schemes of work are based on language patterns in Cam 3 & 4 (Step 3 & 4) on our Linguistic
Continuum (see appendix). However, Step 1 & 2 language should be revised at every opportunity
and planned for pupils to use in other areas of learning and outside activities
Many focussed and enhanced activities have been included. These are suggestions only and please
incorporate own activities linked to your own themes wherever possible. There is no need to
complete every suggested activity. When the children are confident using the language pattern
introduced, move onto the next unit in the scheme of work.
The general units should be used throughout the year. There are also daily routine songs that can
be used throughout the year noted in the appendix at the end of this pack.
The pack should help schools plan accordingly to ensure Estyn’s 2013 Recommendations below are
taken into consideration:

Schools and settings should:
R1 ensure that enough time is devoted to the direct teaching of Welsh;
R2 plan good opportunities for pupils to use Welsh in other areas of learning and in outdoor
activities;
R3 increase the level of skills input to develop pupils’ writing in Welsh;
R4 monitor provision and progress in Welsh Language Development; and
R5 provide practitioners with opportunities to improve their Welsh language skills and language
teaching skill

you progress) revising the language

Appendix for a variety of drilling
techniques)

(Fans are differentiated in the pack – use
your preferred version to support the children
in your class. The hope is that children will be
reminded of the language patterns by
looking at the picture alone).
Following drilling allow children short daily
opportunities to use the fans to ask and
answer questions in pairs. Helpwr Heddiw
will be able to use the fans to ask the class /
group questions

Hydref” (versions for each season are available
in the pack) which is featured at the beginning
of the Cwtsh programme Pecyn Glas Unit 1
Programme 5 and also in Amser Stori Unit 1 on
the Interactive disk. Use the story as a stimulus
for talking about things the children like to do
outdoors in the school ground. Take them
outside and photograph them doing things they
like and things they don’t like. The children can
write sentences under the pictures to create a
class book.

class into two teams who sit in a circle. Each

video clip, as a focussed activity

from the garden to make a meal. Watch the clip at the end of the
programme where children are taking food from the garden to eat with
Ceri. Start with Ceri saying Bwyd da o’r ardd Good food from the
garden
Activity for planting – View Fflic a Fflac Glas Unit 4 programme 2. Right
at the end of the programme following the video clip of Ceri in the garden
planting potatoes, Lyn plants potatoes with some children using the Dw
i’n rhoi ... yn y ... language pattern. View the programme and use as a
stimulus for a focussed Oracy activity in your outdoor area planting
potatoes, flowers etc. The children could video their planting for others to
view. Try to remember to use the Beth wyt ti’n wneud? question which
isn’t used on the Fflic a Fflac clip

This could be adapted to your theme – use the children

Use the Shopping List Smart Notebook presentation (see ICT
resources.) This can be used as a class or group activity on
the interactive whiteboard. The first screen is a model of a
shopping list. As the pupils move from one screen to the
next, they say what they want and move appropriate food /
food and words / words into the shopping basket. The pupils
write a list and check spellings by moving boxes or write
independently without any help
