The six divisions of Pasir Ris – Punggol GRC came together as one to
celebrate Singapore’s 49th birthday this year. The energy of pride and
harmony ran high with the participation of over 3,000 enthusiastic residents
– majority of them decked in the signature red and white. Talented acts took
the stage to entertain the crowd whilst they had their dinner. Conversations
ensued and laughter was shared. And the night ended literally on a high note
with everyone singing heartily to nostalgic past-National Day tracks. While it
has been a grand celebration, we cannot wait to see what is in store for our
nation’s 50th birthday bash next year!

Launched as part of a nationwide rapid crisis-response system,
‘WeCare’ Packs were distributed to the more vulnerable residents
(i.e. elderly, immobile and needy) of Punggol Central in an effort
to help them be as ready as possible when a crisis strikes. The pack
comprises of daily essential items such as instant noodles,
canned food, lozenges, eyewash and a medical supply kit
that include the N95 mask. Each pack can reportedly last
for three days. A joint initiative by the People’s Association
(PA) and NTUC FairPrice Foundation, the residents
of Punggol Central are part of the 30,000 people
who have received the packs.

Pioneer Generation Movement
About 100 residents belonging to the Pioneer Generation were personally presented with
their much-awaited Pioneer Generation Package on 10 August. At the event organised
by Punggol North, the seniors were handed their packs by Ms Penny Low, who was there to
reiterate what the scheme entails and how they will benefit from it. The package includes the
Pioneer Generation Card which entitles the holder to receive special
subsidies at general practitioner (GP) and dental clinics under the
Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS), Polyclinics, and Specialist
Outpatient Clinics. The 100 residents are part of the 450,000 senior
citizens in total eligible for the scheme. After the presentation,
the durian party commenced and residents tucked into an
array of seasonal fruits that were in harvest.

Punggol’s 2nd Community Club Opens
Punggol Vista Community Club (CC) had its official
opening on 23 August after operating for slightly
over one and a half years. There to celebrate the joyous
occasion was Dr Janil and many residents eager to be
a part of the affair. Held alongside the opening was a
mini family carnival where children were kept amused
by different game stations. They could even net and
bring home their own fish (as pets, not for consumption).
Punggol Vista is the second CC, after Punggol 21 CC, to
serve the residents of Punggol.
WhiteWater Condominium residents
joined DPM Teo for an afternoon of casual
conversation as he came by to share
with them the future developments of
Pasir Ris. Organised by the condominium’s
Neighbourhood Committee (NC), residents
also took the chance to raise concerns and
give feedback over how the neighbourhood
can be improved for the benefit of everyone.
The tea party session catered a buffet to
satiate the midday hunger pangs, but more
popular and tastiest of them all was still the
home cooked food prepared and shared by
the residents.

More than 500 residents trotted halfway across the island to
West Coast Park for some Sunday morning fun. The weather held
together nicely for the early birds to enjoy a short brisk walk followed by
some kite flying. With some tugging and pulling, everyone eventually
managed to get their kites soaring up in the air. It was a pleasant
morning of uninterrupted fun as families got the chance to spend
quality time with one another.

Unemployed since 2013, Mdm Chan
approached Project SUCCESS for
employment assistance last October and
began interim employment as a Mobile
Library Assistant under the North East
Community Employment Programme
(CEP). For nine months, she brushed up on
her customer service skills and built more
confidence towards finding a permanent job.
Understanding that the CEP is only temporary, the 57-year-old
would proactively attend job fairs to seek opportunities. Despite the
rejections, she continued to put in more efforts and worked closely
with Project SUCCESS to look for a better job.
In July 2014, Mdm Chan was finally selected to work as a Centre
Caregiver with one of the PAP Community Foundation (PCF) branch.
However, she had her doubts on whether she could adapt. Previously
only attending to students and adults as a Mobile Library Assistant,
the Caregiver’s job scope was drastically different as she had to deal
with pre-school children.
Well aware of her concern, Project SUCCESS approached the
employer and asked them to let Mdm Chan begin as a relief Caregiver
first. Two weeks into the job, she realised how much she enjoyed it
and took it on full-time.
Today, Mdm Chan encourages those who are passionate about
working with children to join her in the industry.

Celebr
Marking the end of Ramadan is the arrival of Hari Raya Aidilfitri when the Muslim
community will seek forgiveness from their elders and begin on a clean slate. It is also
a time for the strengthening of bonds amongst friends and relatives, and what better way
to do so then to celebrate the festival together? Across the division, residents congregated
at various Hari Raya celebrations for a night of dinner and entertainment. Several big names
like Malaysian singer Nassier Wahab and local comedian Yusoff Maruwi also guest-appeared
much to the delight of everyone. Selamat Hari Raya, everyone!

FRUIT BINGE
Instead of gorging on sweets or fried chicken, residents chose
to join their local fruits party for an afternoon of healthy
indulgence instead! For a minimal fee, they got to enjoy an
unlimited supply of plump rambutans, mangosteens and of
course our national fruit – the king of them all – the durian.
While getting their dose of nutrients and vitamins, residents
kicked back and relaxed with a screening of the movie
‘Madagascar’.

FOR HOPE
On a lovely Sunday morning, 300 residents of Punggol South
took part in what was considered to be the largest brisk
walking event of the year. ‘One Community Walk’, organised
by the People’s Association, had over 75,000 people from 87
different constituencies walking together to show their support
for the various social causes in Singapore. On that day, Punggol
South residents came early for a mass warm-up exercise session
before embarking on a short 3km walk around the estate. The
event closed with a lucky draw where a little girl won the biggest
prize of the day – a brand new mountain bicycle!

Each year, leading up to the National Day Celebrations are the equally
significant National Day Observance Ceremonies organised to remind
residents of the importance of Nation Building and Racial Harmony.
Marked by its tradition of singing the National Anthem and reciting the pledge,
residents reaffirmed their loyalty once more to their home, to our nation –
Singapore. After which, each division also had their own unique activity such as a
family carnival to keep the spirits high.

Audie Ng is the bass player and leader
of homegrown 60s pop band, The Silver
Strings. The band recently threw a soldout 50th anniversary reunion concert
to 500 fans and friends who have been
following them since the beginning. Still
active in the music industry, would you
have guessed he turned 72 this year?
A veteran in the scene, VIBES speaks to
Audie about music in the good old days,
ageing musicians, and why age is really
just a number.
Hi Audie, congratulations on the successful 50th
anniversary concert of The Silver Strings! How was the
experience like?
It’s actually my dreams come true. It’s been a tremendous
success and I’m very proud. I believe no band in Singapore
history has performed for 50 years.
We played for almost four hours and performed over 40
songs, both original and covers. With us being all senior
citizens about 70 years old, many were wondering how
we could stand on stage for so long! But I guess when you
enjoy something, you get carried away and forget about
the time.
Tell us a little more about the concert.
I handpicked the songs which would go well with the
crowd. I wanted it to be a party, and not just a concert.
We had some guest performers like radio stalwart Larry
Lai, musician Ernesto Valerio and singer Jerry Fernandez.
We flew in the band’s former singers like Veronica Young,
Mike & Herb, and Mustapha Al-Johary to perform together
again.

What genre of music does the band play?
We play oldies, pop-rock and ballads. We are more of an
English pop band. We wrote and recorded 12 original songs
then.
The Silver Strings were formed in 1963. Who were the
band’s musical influences then?
The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones and
The Shadows. As a British colony, we followed the British
trends. That’s why bands like The Shadows were more popular
than The Beatles. The Shadows was THE band of our time.
To be recognised as a band, we had to be able to play their
songs.
How different was the music scene like then-and-now?
In the 60s, we played for passion; not for money, not for fame.
Last time, music was focused on the melody and the voice.
Now, music is made for dual purposes – dancing and singing.
They also paid less attention to the looks of the singer, and
more to the quality of the voice. Nowadays, they’re more
interested in how good a singer looks. One example is the
Koreans and the Kpop. Frankly, they may not be the best
singers around, but the package is good. Speaking of which,
45 years ago, I actually brought in a Korean band called the
‘Korean Kittens’ to perform.
What were the band’s defining moments in the heyday?
We were very fortunate to open for the legendary Rolling
Stones when they first came to Singapore in 1965. The
same year, we also played to 20,000 people during the Miss
Universe Pageant in Malaysia’s Stadium Negara.
We were also the only band to tour the whole of Malaysia in
all the Shaw Brother theatres in the 60s. It’s amazing because
we were greeted just like how we greet the international
artists. They adored us!
But the band still performs together?
The band’s already disbanded, but we come together
whenever there’s a concert or a charity event to play. Since
we’re still good and healthy and it’s for a good cause, we do it.
Most people your age are retired. What are you currently
involved with?
I’ve been in the music industry for 51 years. I still run my own
business – Supreme Musical Connections – which supplies
entertainers from and around Asia.
Will you be retiring soon?
The word ‘retire’ doesn’t come to me. If we retire, we get
senile. I prefer to stay active. What’s there to retire anyway?
You can still do your own things at your own pace and time.
Just never stop.
Any words for other senior citizens out there?
Age is only a number. I want to tell these seniors to continue
playing, and doing what they love. Music keeps you young.
As long as they keep the music in them alive, that’s most
important.
On the ageing musicians in Singapore:
Many senior citizens who were previously in bands are still
playing. Community Clubs make allowance for them to
practise for free. They bring their own instruments and don’t
have to book their studios. In return, they perform when there
are functions. Many also continue to play at Country Clubs.
They’re happy doing what they love.
One last question: Are you planning a sequel for the
successful concert you’ve just had?
Yes, maybe next year. People are requesting for another show,
and I might oblige because I’m also getting older. I don’t think
I can wait another 25 years to hold a 75th anniversary!

What led to the disbanding of The Silver Strings?
I saw that there were no prospects for musicians. The
market here is too small and there was a lack of support and
acceptance.
Do you still consider yourself a musician?
No, but every three to four years, I activate and play again. I’m
still in the music industry, just not as a musician.

He’s the 2013 Filial Piety Award winner. Tan Chin Hock, 36, is one of the 10 recipients conferred the
national award for their devotion to their parents and the elderly. Plenty to say about the subject, he
shares about filial piety, whether such awards are necessary, and if filial piety can actually be measured.
Hi Chin Hock! How does one get nominated for the National
Filial Piety Award?
It’s an award conferred by the Nanyang Confucian Association and
I was nominated by my wife and younger brother. When I came to
know about it, I didn’t think much about it as it wasn’t something I
had set myself up for.
Do tell us a little about your story.
They were looking for individuals who’re devoted to their parents,
and also one who’s a role model in this area. My story revolves
around my determination to not give up on my mother, who, at that
time, was undergoing huge challenges in her life. I believe part of the
reason for winning was also due to my promotion of filial piety since
2009.
In your opinion, is it appropriate to reward a trait that should be
innate?
Getting rewarded for something I must do wasn’t something
I wanted or expected. In my opinion, if people are nice to their
parents for rewards of any type, I don’t think that is sustainable.
It must come from within. There’s an adage which I strongly believe –
“饮水思源”: when drinking the water, remember the source”.
Being the eldest son, I believe that taking care of my parents is my
natural responsibility. My parents took on laborious jobs to bring us
up. Thus, I always remind myself that no matter what, I must strive to
make their twilight years a happy and blissful one.

Is filial piety measurable? How do you determine if someone is
more filial than the other?
It’s definitely not measurable.
Everybody’s view on filial piety is different and unique. I can’t say
I’m more or less filial than the rest. During my promotion of filial
piety, I’m fully cognisant of the fact my role is only to remind others
to think of our parents as they are fading away with each passing
day as we go through with our lives.
So this award isn’t about who is more or less filial right?
Absolutely not! I believe the intention of the award is to arouse
attention and inspire people. People are spending less time
together as a family due to ever increasing demands from work
and personal commitments. More must be done to remind us the
importance of showing our love and concern towards our aging
parents.
Is it a cause that you’re personally passionate about?
People who know me know that I’m a family oriented man, and I’m
always eager to spread the following words around - Importance
of our parents, our family and the maintenance of good health to
achieve these.
To share the message, I’ve set up the HoldingHandsSG website.
I’ve been contributing articles to newspapers to reach out to the
masses and circulating short stories via social media. I’m also
exploring the possibility of publishing a book to reach out to the
younger generation.

HOT TOPICS
Some 250 residents attended the Pasir Ris – Punggol GRC’s post National Day Rally dialogue
session with DPM Teo and the other MPs last month. The session served to reiterate and
discuss the Prime Minister’s National Day Rally speech, and for the residents to bring up any
other areas of concern. Housing and education were two main topics brought up during the
dialogue; of which residents raised questions over the Lease Buyback Scheme and suggested
for more flexibility within. Many residents were also keen to know if there was a faster career
progression for Polytechnic and ITE students, following the Prime Minister’s mention over
creating better opportunities for them. The well-attended session also covered topics like the
strongly-debated Central Provident Fund (CPF) and how to better help the less-privileged.

The Wonder of Asia
Sri Lanka offers so much to explore. There’s something for everyone
to enjoy!
‘Temple of Tooth’ (Buddha Tooth Relic Temple) is a must-see. You can also
purchase the gems and precious stones that Sri Lanka is famous for.
We began at Colombo city – the western part of Sri Lanka – where the
people, traditional food and national monuments were fantastic. Then,
we headed south over the next three days. We hopped from excellent
beaches to the Old Fort at Galle, drove through Bandula National Park,
then to Yala National Park for an authentic safari adventure.
We headed to Sigiriya that is further north of Sri Lanka and climbed the
Sigiriya Rock Fortress. At the top, we were rewarded with a magnificent
view of the surrounding jungle and gusty winds to take us off our feet.
On our way back to Colombo, we visited the Pinawela Elephant
orphanage. What a pleasant and fun filled experience to see so many
elephants bathing and playing in the nearby river, and then brought to
the orphanage in a procession.
The 14,000 hectare park allowed us to marvel at animals like birds and
elephants up close and personal. If you’re lucky, you might even spot
a leopard! We headed northward to Nuwara Eliya next – a hill station
6,000 feet above sea level. With beautiful mountains around, flower
gardens and a breathtaking view of the Gregory Lake from our hotel
room – it’s a sight any city dweller would die for.
A week later, we were back to our home sweet home, Singapore.
