DISCLOSURE
#01
2014
A word from our CEO
GCS had an excellent year in 2013 and grew by 4%, largely
outperforming the market. The Group’s financial performance
– in terms of turnover, profitability and cash generation – was
the best since the company was formed in 2005 by PAI Partners.
These results give us a firm foundation for future expansion and
I would like to thank everybody at GCS for their contribution.
Christian
Voegeli
CEO of GCS
Our strategy is based on three key pillars – the development
of innovative, value-added products, operational excellence
and penetration of global markets – and our goal for 2014 is
to further implement this successful strategy across the whole
group. The competition remains strong but we are confident
we can sustain our profitable growth this year and beyond.
New branding
for 2014
GCS has unveiled a new
image. The logos of our seven
brands have been redesigned
to incorporate the GCS corporate logo, creating a stronger, more unified identity for
all units within the group.

GCS is on a roll
GCS has designed a new mini roll-on for a top cosmetics brand’s latest skin care
product, thereby strengthening its position in this segment of the market. As well
as two shapes of closure, GCS is producing bottles in three formats and the fitment, all made in Poland. By offering this turnkey solution, the customer is able
to mix bottles and closures to suit the identity of different brands.
unilever partners
with GCS
Unilever has chosen GCS to
be its lead development partner for the latest ‘Small &
Mighty’ super-concentrated
liquid detergent for its Persil
and Skip brands. GCS is the
sole supplier of two key elements of the new-look packaging – an easy-to-open
flip-top lid and spout, and a
stain eraser ball made from
TPE and with moulded features designed to assist with
cleaning and measuring.

trigger pump wins gold!
GCS tastes success in coffee
market
Last year a fully recyclable GCS All Plastic
Trigger Pump (APTP) helped Werner & Mertz
to become the first European company to win
the Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold Award for
a cleaning product. The accolade is awarded
by an independent non-profit institution to
products and packaging with the highest environmental qualities.
Beverage
GCS has strengthened its lead in the European coffee closures market with a number of major contract wins. These include
developing a two-piece closure for the
world’s leading brand of instant coffee
which is 40% lighter than conventional
designs. Thanks to its expertise in highprecision moulding processes, GCS is also
supplying plastic inserts for one of the top
brands in the coffee capsules market.

picasso – the art of innovation
Picasso, the revolutionary GCS sports cap, was one of
the stars of the show at Plastic Closure Innovations
2013 in Cologne. The closure is the preferred choice
of Nestlé Waters because of its simplicity, convenience
and safety – a key feature is its patented tamper-evident band. Nestlé Waters, the world leader in the bottled water market, has selected Picasso for several of its
leading European brands.

Smooth design for nivea
GCS is the sole supplier of bi-injected hinge closures for
Nivea’s new In-shower Body Moisturiser and worked
side by side with makers Beiersdorf before and during
the product’s global launch in 2013. Beiersdorf says it
chose GCS to be its lead development partner because
of its design capability, short lead times and technical
performance, along with its in-house expertise in producing moulds at Zeller Engineering in Germany.

GCS cleans up with new cap
GCS’s eye-catching Clean Lock cap has been selected by Unilever for a
new range of packaging launched in 2013 for its dressings and condiments brands. The transparent closure incorporates a silicone valve designed to control and stop the flow of product so that the cap always stays
clean. GCS also developed a live hinge which springs the lid all the way
open, allowing the consumer to open the product using just one hand.
new cap sets the standard
GCS is supplying Robert McBride Ltd with a new standard
dosing closure for its Surcare brand of concentrated fabric
conditioner. The 38mm screw-on cap, which features a 30ml
dosing line and narrow ribs around the skirt to aid grip, is
being supplied in nine pearlescent and plain colours for the
Surcare range and a number of private label fabric conditioner
ranges. Standard closures offer an excellent alternative when
custom tooling cannot be justified and GCS has a significant
share of this market, supplying most of the standard closures
used by UK-based contract fillers.
Beverage
microvalve is a dream
It took GCS less than a month to design and develop a new valve dispensing closure for DreamPak,
a leading manufacturer of hot and cold beverage
drink mixes. This closure makes it simple to deliver 20 to 30 shots of highly concentrated liquids,
allowing water enhancers to be used on the go.
Healthcare
CRC is safe bet for success
6
PharmaSafe® is a new lightweight and costeffective child-resistant closure (CRC) from
GCS. By drawing on its 35 years of experience
in manufacturing CRCs for the healthcare
market, GCS has been able to develop a twopiece tamper-evident closure, whereas most
rival products are made from three pieces
and are thus heavier. This standard CRC can
be adapted for either plastic or glass bottles
and comes with either a plug or a liner. It is
also available in different colours and with a
dosing cup.
Expert View
‘we are a world leader in valve technology’
Global Closure Systems has been at the forefront of valve dispensing
systems since the technology was first developed in 1990. Since that
time, it has enjoyed a successful partnership with Liquid Moulding
Services (LMS), who supply the silicone valves for its closures.
As the silicone valve is tiny and weighs only 0.08g, it was initially difficult to assemble
products at high speeds. The team at UCP in Norwich, a GCS Centre of Excellence,
overcame this issue by developing and patenting a unique method of assembling the
silicone valve into a retaining ring to create a standard valve sub-assembly (VSA). As
well as being quicker and cheaper to make, designs could now be smaller.
Our technology is still unique and today GCS manufactures more than one billion valve
closures every year. We offer a comprehensive range of custom-made and standard
valve caps, all designed to achieve optimum dispensing and sealing performance.
These closures are very popular with consumers because they are convenient to use
and will never leak. Working closely with our customers and technical partners, we
are finding new applications and new markets for this excellent product all the time.
The silicone valve has been without doubt one of the most significant innovations
in closure design over the last 30 years and it has made a significant contribution to
GCS’s business growth.
