This month marks the 100th anniversary of your Chamber! Since 1915, your Chamber
has played the leading role in the business growth and community development of
Massillon. We wish to thank our members for your continued support and dedication
throughout the years. You have always been the lifeblood of this organization and your
participation in Chamber affairs continues to help make Massillon and Western Stark
County the best place to live, work, and play. Thank you!
To commemorate our centennial milestone, we wanted to update our logo and
organizational message to better serve our membership for a new century. To
achieve this goal, we engaged the services of Innis Maggiore, but soon realized
that our discussions would lead us to much more than just a new Chamber logo.
During our winter meetings with the great staff at Innis Maggiore, we spent a lot of
time talking about our membership. We are fortunate to have a diverse and active
membership and we really wanted to build upon what has already made the Chamber
successful for a hundred years.
Over the years, the Chamber’s membership has grown in number and geographical
influence. The name Massillon Area Chamber was introduced as early as 1974 to
reflect a growing and changing membership; especially outside the city limits of
Massillon. Today, while still retaining the strong Massillon base our Chamber has
always enjoyed and encouraged, membership continues to grow in the areas
surrounding Massillon like Perry Township, Brewster, Navarre, Tuscarawas Township,
and Jackson Township. In fact, almost 45% of the Chamber’s 335+ members are
businesses and organizations located outside the city of Massillon. Most of them,
however, can be identified as within Western Stark County.
With this in mind, and as a member-focused organization, we felt it was important to
redefine the ambiguous “Area” in our name and truly reflect what the Chamber is and
who it serves. At the May board meeting, the Chamber Board of Directors approved
changing the name from the Massillon Area Chamber of Commerce to the Massillon
WestStark Chamber of Commerce. This change is a logical step in the evolution of
the Chamber and does not substantially change how we do business.
Again, thank you for a century of accomplishments. This year’s Fall Dinner will be
a 100th birthday party celebration for the Chamber! We hope to see you all there.

SCORE HR Workshop for Small Businesses
Canton Regional Chapter of SCORE and co-sponsor Kent State
University at Stark have retained four local HR experts to conduct
a small-business HR workshop that will focus on: key HR issues
for small business owners—both for-profit and nonprofit;
employment law—and its myths; determining whether a worker
is an employee or contractor; and recruiting and what you need
to know. Held on Tuesday, July 7, in the Conference Center at
Kent State University Stark, sign-in and networking will begin at
8:00 a.m. and the workshop will run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Creating and Maintaining an Employee Handbook Seminar
The Ohio Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Kent
State University at Stark will host a “Creating and Maintaining an
Employee Handbook” seminar with Elizabeth Crosby, partner at
Buckley King, Cleveland, on Tuesday, August 11. A continental
breakfast will be offered at 7:30 a.m.; the seminar will take place
from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at Kent State Stark Conference Center.
This seminar will provide the small and mid-size company
with an overview of laws affecting the employment relationship
and the tools necessary to comply with those laws. Through
implementation and management of employment policies in an
employee handbook, employers are able to set expectations for
workplace performance and maintain neutral, effective methods
for managing personnel. Participants in this seminar will become
familiar with employment laws and will be provided with a
framework of policies to help them create and maintain their
handbooks.

SBDC Information Session for New Businesses
The Ohio Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Kent
State University at Stark will sponsor an information session for
individuals interested in starting a small business or those who
are in the early stages of business formation. The information
session will be held on Thursday, August 6, from 5:00 to 7:00
p.m. at the Kent State University at Stark Conference Center.
The session will provide a general overview of issues related
to starting a business, such as business planning, determining
market demand, financing options, and available community
resources. After attending the program, participants may contact
the SBDC to schedule an appointment with a business counselor
for a one-on-one consultation.
The $10 per-person includes program materials. Registration
and payment for the information session must be made online

FootGolf—the crossover point of soccer
and golf—is a great activity for company
outings, birthday parties, and school and
community organizations. It is now offered
at Tam O’Shanter Golf Course each
Saturday and Sunday after 3:00 p.m. and
Monday through Friday after 6:00 p.m.
The American FootGolf League-certified
course routes along the front nine of the
Dales Course. The only equipment needed
—a soccer ball—can be rented at Tam

summer clinics for athletes ages 12 to 16
at Mercy Sports Medicine in North Canton.
Mercy’s sports enhancement staff will
teach exercises specific to running,
maintenance, and injury prevention
techniques in the runner’s clinic on July
17, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A speed and agility
clinic will be offered on July 22, 2:00 to
4:00 p.m., including drills to develop
