aving just completed another successful Alliance Job Fair in July, OhioMeansJobs Stark
County is gearing up again and heading to western Stark County to produce the 2016
Massillon Job Fair on Wednesday, September 28th. This is the third consecutive year OMJ
Stark will team up with the City of Massillon, The Independent, Monster, Mix 94.1, NewsMassillon Job Fair Flier
Talk 1480 WHBC and the Massillon Area Chamber of Commerce to host this event from

Buckeye ESOL Program Continues Growth
T
he English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) adult education offering through the Buckeye Career
Center ABLE/GED program experienced record growth in 2015-16. Upon completion of its 2015-16
program year on June 30, ESOL enrollment reached 164 students – more than doubling its participant total
of 77 from ’14-15.
The significant attendance increase at the First Moravian Church of Dover – a long-time partner site for both
GED and ESOL classes in Tuscarawas County – resulted in expansion to a second site last spring at the Dover
Alliance Church. The Strasburg Saint John Church of Christ served as a temporary site last fall and winter.
ESOL students enrolled with Buckeye ABLE/GED have a yearly goal of improving their reading level and
English speaking skills, with math, science, socials studies/citizenship, technology, and workplace and
financial literacy also incorporated into their studies. Classes are offered two mornings and two evenings a
week at each site, with new student orientations held seasonally at the First Moravian Church of Dover.
Remaining ESOL orientation dates for the 2016-17 program year include September 13/15, January 10/12,
and March 21/23, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:30 p.m. Classes are offered at no
cost to adult students and walk-ins are welcome.

Project Homeless Connect Annual Event
P
roject Homeless Connect will be holding its annual “Making a Difference for Stark County” event on
Tuesday, September 13, 2016. The event will be held at the Canton Civic Center from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00
p.m.
Non-profits, veteran’s groups and other government agencies will be coming together to provide free
services, meals and personal items to those dealing with homelessness in Stark County. Some of the
services provided on site will include:
Clothing and personal care services
Housing and health care information
Employment and behavioral services
Legal Assistance
Food Benefits
In addition, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs will be on site providing specialized services for veterans.
In order to verify eligibility for these services, veterans should bring discharge papers and a photo ID.
There will also be a number of veteran’s focused agencies attending the event including Disabled Veterans
Outreach Specialist Patrice Wood, representing OhioMeansJobs Stark County. In addition, OhioMeansJobs
resource room staff will attend to provide information about resource room and workshop services.

OSU Extension Brings Nutrition Classes to OMJ Stark
T
he Ohio State University Extension will be facilitating the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education
Program (EFNEP) starting Monday, September 19 at OhioMeansJobs Stark County. The program, which
is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, offers a series of eight free workshops once a
week. Each workshop will last one hour, starting at 11:15 a.m.
Participants of the EFNEP classes will learn the basics of making healthy food choices while being on a
budget. Each week the participants will get to take home a food preparation tool to help them live a
healthier lifestyle. Participants will also get the chance to make a nutritional snack during each class.
The class is free and open to the public. The dates of the workshops are September 19, September 26,
October 3, October 17, October 24, October 31, November 7, and November 14. If an individual attends all
eight workshops, they will receive a graduation certificate.
