Chamber President Ted Herncane
and Suzan Cheng, MD
I would like to thank Aultman
Health Foundation CEO
Ed Roth for inviting me to
participate in this yearʼs Inside
Aultman program. Held once
a year, this program brings a
select group of active and
civic-minded citizens to Aultman
Hospital for a day of shadowing
a member of the medical staff.
It was an honor to be considered
part of this group and, having
been born at Aultman Hospital,
it was a homecoming of sorts.
Spending the morning with Dr. Suzan Cheng, Stark Radiation Oncology, was fascinating.
One, I need to eat more fruits and vegetables, and two, the coordination and planning
involved in operating the department is extensive to say the least. It certainly is a team
effort. If more people could experience what goes on behind the scenes at the hospital,
I think we would all be better patients.
Again, thank you to Ed Roth and his team at Aultman Hospital for allowing me to
participate in Inside Aultman. Keep up the great work!

Dear Chamber members,
Well, here we are and it is already October! A little over a month from now, it will be
Election Day on November 3rd and we should all be preparing to exercise our right to
vote. If you're not registered to vote or need to update your information, the deadline
to do so is October 5. Early voting will begin on October 6.
There are quite a few very important decisions facing us as voters in November—
mayoral, City Council, township trustee, and Board of Education races; levies for school,
library, and road funding; and three proposed amendments to the State Constitution.
The Legislative Committee heard a presentation from the Massillon Public Library in
September and will be listening to presentations for and against Issue 3 at the October 8
meeting. Recommendations from the Legislative Committee regarding your Chamber's
stance on these items will be discussed and voted on at the October 13 Board meeting.
Please watch your email for information after that.
Chairperson’s Message
Nancy Gessner, MCTV
Board Chairperson
Massillon WestStark
Chamber of Commerce
If you are interested in learning more about Issue 3, please plan to attend the Legislative
Committee meeting on October 8 at 8:00 a.m. at the Chamber. Issue 3 is a proposed
amendment to the Constitution “granting a monopoly for the commercial production and
sale of marijuana for recreational and medicinal purposes.” (Source: 9.18.2015
http://www.starkcountyohio.gov/uploads/cd/32/cd3205a42af3f5bea239e6eabba63aca/ge
n15issues.pdf) Roger Geiger, Vice President, NFIB/OH Executive Director, will be
providing information opposing the passage of Issue 3. Mr. Geiger manages the public
policy, political, member activism, and communication programs throughout the state.
As of this writing, the name of the person representing ResponsibleOhio and Vote Yes
on Issue 3 has not yet been confirmed. Watch for more details.
The Stark County Board of Elections website (starkcountyohio.gov/board-of-elections)
has a wealth of information about the logistics of voting along with who and what will be
on the ballot. Please take this responsibility seriously.
If you canʼt attend the Legislative Committee meeting on October 8 but have thoughts
youʼd like to share, please drop me an email at nsgessner@MCTVOhio.com.
Workforce Investment Board Can Fund Medical Assistant Training
The local and state demand for more medical assistants and other positions in hospital
settings and physician offices will be met thanks to a $386,616 Sector Partnership
National Emergency Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) that the Workforce
Investment Board of Stark and Tuscarawas counties has received.
Cheers for the Chamber!
H I G H L I G H T I N G M E M B E R S E RV I C E S
The local Board will provide funding for eligible dislocated workers for both classroom
and on-the-job training for medical assistants and other healthcare in-demand positions
that are paid above the entry level rate of pay for the region. The purpose of the
National Emergency Grant is to assist states and local workforce boards to provide indemand career pathways for the dislocated workers. The grant is designed to effectively
and efficiently re-employ dislocated workers, so those eligible for the program must be
dislocated workers who have been unemployed for at least 27 weeks, unemployment
insurance claimants likely to exhaust their benefits, or eligible veterans.
Jennifer Meek Eells, Executive Director to the Board, explained that the typical length
of training for medical assistants averages nine to twelve months through adult career
and technical programs, with an average cost for training and certification of $8,000.
Hospitals can then hire and train these individuals. The costs for a hospital to train
new medical assistants and create career pathways within the hospital averages
about $2,500, which the on-the-job training contract will cover.

Newman Creek Cellars Releases New Wine
Newman Creek Cellars, Massillonʼs “Urban Winery,”
recently released its newest wine, City of Champions,
at an event at the winery. Mayor Kathy CatazaroPerry had the honor of uncorking the first bottle. A
small group of VIPs was present to share in the
release. The semi-dry wine is a delicious blend of
Colombard, Semillon, and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.
The wine was released for public sale on September
22. For more information, call 330.904.3546, visit
newmancreekcellars.com, or stop at the winery—28
Charles Avenue Southeast, Tuesday through Saturday.

receipt and processing of payroll reports
for the first half of 2015. Processing has
been delayed, but BWC has developed a
work-around procedure. BWC will try to
have their policy information up to date as
soon as possible. Register your account
through BWCʼs website to take advantage
of the available information, be prepared
for future reporting, and use the benefits
associated with online services.
New Message on Monthly Invoices
A new message appears on employersʼ
invoices: “Payments made within the last
14 days may not be reflected on this
invoice. Failure to pay your premium in
full by the due date will result in a lapse
in coverage. You are responsible for all
claims costs for injuries that occur during
a period of lapsed coverage.” Employers
may have received an invoice in September
when they paid their bill on time at the end
of August. Visit BWCʼs website at
bwc.ohio.gov for the current policy
information.
For questions about BWCʼs prospective
billing process or paying your invoice,

The Salvation Army
Celebrates 150 Years
What started as a movement in London made its way around the globe, and this
summer, The Salvation Army celebrated its 150th anniversary of service. Founded by
William Booth in east London in 1865, The Salvation Army was inspired by Boothʼs son,
who noted the large number of homeless people sleeping along the banks of the
Thames River. Boothʼs response was, “Go and do something”—a statement The
Salvation Army has epitomized for decades.
The efforts of The Salvation Army have branched far beyond England. The organization
is now active in 162 countries, anchored by the communal desire to offer spiritual,
physical, emotional, and financial support to those in crisis. The Salvation Army of
Massillon has carried out Boothʼs mission since the 1885.
The Salvation Army of Massillon stays busy, recently distributing nearly 500 backpacks
and back-to-school supplies and services; helping the homeless find safe, secure
shelter; and feeding the hungry through its Choice Food Pantry and weekly Hot Meals
program. The youth programs recently expanded to include a parents-and-tots program;
a new arts and drama program will begin this fall. Living skills classes like sewing
attract girls and women of all ages and skill levels.
“Every day we are blessed to make a positive impact in peopleʼs lives through the love
and power of God and the generosity of neighbors,” said Major Thomas Perks, Corps
Officer of The Salvation Army of Massillon. “All across the world, The Salvation Army
works to bring hope to those who are struggling.”
The Salvation Army of Massillon is located at 315 Sixth Street Northeast in Massillon.
