WELCOMING OUR NEW PASTOR
For the first time in 38 years, Trinity will welcome a new senior pastor.
One may ask how shall we do it? The Call Committee, the Church
Council and Staff members have been arranging details for a smooth
transition. Pastor Riesen intends to begin on October 1. God’s Holy
Spirit has been with us in the interim time since June 1, 2015. We have
been blessed with a faithful Call Committee, who worked creatively and
diligently to search for a new pastor.
In the past 15 months there have been changes in staff. There has
been self-study of our congregation, its history and directions for the
future. Some persons were very anxious after Pastors Mitchell and
Messner departed. Some folks left our fellowship, and others joined us.
Overall it has been a time of assessment, evaluation and casting a vision
for the future. Life in our congregation did not suddenly halt, becaus e
of a change of pastors. Thankfully our congregation has been blessed
with good lay leadership, and our ministry has moved forward in good
and healthy ways. I am giving thanks for your faithfulness in this
interim period. We did not shrink before the task God gave us.
Several reactions happen when a new pastor arrives. Some persons will
rejoin our fellowship. People will evaluate the new pastor. We dare not
raise our expectations unrealistically high about any future pastor. That
is unfair to the person. Rather let us ask God’s Holy Spirit to open our
hearts, our arms, our lives, so that any new pastor can begin their
ministry with enthusiasm and joy for proclaiming the Gospel in this
congregation.
Pastor Riesen and Terry have purchased a new home in Ashland and
will become part of our community. If asked, you can be helpful to
them in your gracious attitude. People have given Diane and me many
good suggestions about Ashland County. I see the welcoming of a
new pastor as similar to welcoming any new person in our
congregation. We listen to them and hear their story. We walk with
them and help them to navigate life in our congregation. We pray for
their spiritual journey in this new place.
Therefore let us be in prayer for our congregation and new pastor.
God will guide us as God guided Abraham and Sarah to their new
home (Genesis 12:1). We have God’s promise and his Spirit’s presence.

Trinity Call Committee Communications
August 2016
The Call Committee and Church council have received confirmation from Pastor Riesen that he will start
working on October 1, 2016. There will be an Installation and Celebration of him as our Senior Pastor later
in October.
The Call Committee has no plans to meet again until we start the search for our Associate Pastor after
Pastor Riesen is settled in. Pastor Riesen will be part of the Call Committee and the search.

Chuck Swindoll once asked, “If you were asked to describe the book of Job, what would you
say?” I am sure some of you might call it a book about the depth of human suffering, others would
call it a story of patience in serving faithfully, and still others would call it a story that illustrates the
unfairness of life. The amazing thing is, all those answers are correct! However, the book of Job
offers so much more than a heart-wrenching story of one man’s suffering with the help (or lack of
help) from some well-meaning friends. Job is a valuable resource of God’s truth that we can apply
to our lives when we have reached the end of our rope. In this journey through the book of Job
we will see that the main focus is not on Job’s suffering but on his stalwart faith in God. Will you
join me in this travel as we walk with him through his trials and eventual triumph as God rewards
him for his faith? Hopefully, Job’s courageous faith will encourage you to lean on the Lord in every
situation.

Most of you know that Pastor Riesen has written a book. This is an introduction
to the Christian faith, that should interest both seekers and Christians who want
to better understand and deepen the faith they confess.
In it he raises some of the basic questions of life that contemporary people really
ask. Then he discusses them, drawing on his own life experiences, his many years
of pastoral experience, and his wide reading in books old and new, religious and
secular. But the questions and discussion are not an end in thems elves. He calls
this book a “catechism” because it is a book of questions and answers. To order

SOAR: Seeing Other’s Abilities Revealed
Are you interested in serving families of children with special
needs? From S eptember through April on the second Saturday
of the month from 4:30 to 7:30pm, Ashland Special Needs Ministry and Trinity Lutheran are working together to provide
“SOAR”, a night out for parents of children with special needs.
This evening will include: dinner, crafts, games, stories, puppets, and hearing about Jesus. “SOAR” is
provided for the child with special needs as well as his or her siblings. W e are looking for volunteers
to help as we desire to reach as many families as possible and provide this wonderful time of res pite.
Training is available. If you are interested in volunteering or serving in another way, please contact

2016 NALC Convocation focuses on “Holy God, Holy Lives”
More than 400 NALC members gathered August 10-12 for the 2016 NALC
vocation in Anaheim, California, around the theme, “Holy God, Holy Lives.”

Major presentations were provided by the R ev. Dr. Malcolm Guite of the University of Cambridge,
England, and musician Steve Bell from Winnipeg, Manitoba. They combined to lead devotions
during the Convocation and led a poetic and musical reflection the theme. Prof. Guite also gave an
address entitled, “C.S. Lewis: ‘Friendship and Holiness.”
The Rev. Dr. James Nestingen, a noted Lutheran historian, led a Bible study and was preacher for the
Communion service.
“Holy Families” will be a special NALC emphasis as a part of the 2017 celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. A variety of resources will be available for congregations and families.
The NALC Mission Festival began the Convocation under the theme, “Faith is Made Whole in
Community.” Time on Wednesday and Thursday was spent focusing on what it means for the NALC
to be a Mission-Driven church. Speakers included Bishop John Bradosky, Pastor Gemechis Buba,
Assistant to the Bishop for Missions, and Gary Pecuch of faithwebbing.com. Delegates also focused
on developing mission plans for their congregations and Mission Districts.
Elected to the NALC Executive Council to four-year terms were Lynn Kickingbird of Edmond, OK.,
and Pastor Kenneth Kimball of Waterville, IA. Pastor David Schafer of Waukon, IA, was elected to the
Court of Adjudication. The Convocation also ratified the election of four people to the NALC-Canada
Section Governing Board.
North American Lutheran Seminary Board of Regents members were elected. Pastor Cathi Braas ch
of Elwood, NE; Donna Evans of Pittsburgh, PA; and Pastor Jeffray Greene of Brooks, GA., were
elected to six-year terms. Bishop Paull Spring of State College, PA., was elected to a four-year term to
fill a vacancy on the board.
2017 Budgets Were Approved. The Convocation approved a $2 million operating budget for the
NALC. Budgets were also approved for the NALC’s two designated funds: $140,500 for the Great
Commission Fund and $525,160 for the Fund for Theological Education (which includes the North
American Lutheran Seminary.) Treasurer Ryan Schwartz reported that NALC “income is very
substantially below budget.” Many delegates expressed concerns about the shortfall and commi tted
to addressing support for the NALC in their congregations or encouraging
gifts by individuals.
The Braaten and Benne Lectures in Theology, the annual theological
conference which precedes the Convocation, focused on theological
perspectives on the Person of Christ. Five speakers explored the theme from
different theological perspectives. The speakers were Dr. Carl Braaten,
Dr. Phillip Cary, Dr. Wesley Hill, Dr. Mickey L. Mattox, and Dr. Michael
Pasquarello III.

The annual Women’s Christmas Brunch is just around the corner! The
Brunch will be held on Saturday, December 3, and will once again focus
on how we can give of ourselves this holiday season.
As in the past few years, we are asking groups or individuals to decorate
a table for our brunch. If you or a group that you belong to would like to
a part of this event, please contact Dawn Forbes (419-289-2126), as soon
as possible. We will be sending out information in September with details
on set up.
M O MS IN P RAY E R
Moms in Prayer International will begin meeting on Monday, September 12 at 8:30 a.m., Front
Lounge Trinity Lutheran Church. Moms in Prayer International (MIPI) is a group of moms who pray
for their children and the schools they attend. We meet weekly when our children are in school. All
moms, grandmothers and friends who would like to pray for their children and schools are welcome
to attend and pray. The best school supply you can provide your child is PRAYER! Please join us.

Trinity woodworkers, who build ramps for those in need, are at it again. Ron Bilger, and his
team, built this ramp off Cottage Street in Ashland.
The weather was hot and dry, but all went well, and we finished on Ron’s Birthday!!!!!!!

A LTAR G UILD C HAN CE L C O MMITTE E
From its beginning, the Altar Guild has divided responsibilities under three
committees: Flowers, Communion, and Chancel. Chancel is so named because
their responsibility is to prepare and maintain the Chancel for all traditional
services in the main Sanctuary. Each week this committee sees that the
appropriate church-year paraments, church banner, candles, and candelabra,
are displayed. They post the Church festival on the hymn board and prepare
the large print hymnal. They also dust and clean the Chancel. Twice a year
they polish the brass and s ervice the oil candles. Special Events, such as
Christmas and Easter, also require unique attention to the Chancel. In addition to the committee
members, we are very blessed to have pew volunteers who straighten each pew and refill the
hymnbook racks, as needed. The committee also prepares the Chancel for weddings, funerals, and
baptisms held in the main Sanctuary. As with our other committees, four people serve rotating
duties on a weekly basis. We are very fortunate to have members who are willing to share their gifts
and serve our church family.

Once again, it is time for our Fall Getaway, and this time we will
head north to enjoy the beauty of Lake Erie in Vermilion, Ohio.
We’ll meet in the office hallway at 9:30 a.m. and take the church van north
for shopping, food, and fun, and will then return to Trinity no later than 4:30
p.m.

Jean Viers, Shelby Alliance of Women, will speak about their medical mission to Africa. They send
shipping containers of medical supplies as well as clothing for newborn babies to Mali, which is the
poorest African country. We'll be served a delicious lunch of Ham Loaf, Cheesy Potatoes, Corn, Roll,
and Dessert.

Back to School Bash Wrap up and Thanks!
Thank you to the many volunteers who helped with the
SEVENTH ANNUAL Back to School Bash! Nearly 50 happy
volunteers made this another wonderful event - from those
who helped to set up after worship, and those who manned
the prize and registration tables, played games with the kids and supervised the bounce houses, to
those who stayed to clean up all the mess - a huge THANK YOU!! We could not have done it
without you! (Kudos to our youth who manned the games and made each child feel special as they
played the games.)
The main reason for this event, which is sponsored by the Nurture, Christian Education and
Children’s Ministries committees, was for our families to register their children for Sunday School
classes. In addition to blessing children’s backpacks, this year we blessed each individual child–
what a wonderful way to celebrate the milestone in the lives of our children! Special thanks to
Pastor Koch, Pastor Moffett, Rev. Abel and pastoral Intern Eric Steward for giving of their time to
bless our children.
Over 50 kids participated in a scavenger hunt that led them throughout the building and strai ght
to their Sunday School classes, where their teachers were waiting to welcome them. We are all
looking forward to another wonderful fall and the Back to School Bash was a great way to get
things started!

Trinity’s 24th annual Choir Camp met from August 1 thru 4 with the theme, “Listen, God Is Calling,”
based on ELW 513. Seventy-two children from age four thru grade 5 spent the mornings experiencing a number of songs, Bible stories, and activities.
All of this could not have been possible without a number of dedicated staff and volunteers. After a
gathering kickball game led by Norm Peterson & Andrew Burgart, Pastor Koch led a Bible theme of
the day.
Ron Marenchin, Jane Whitecotton and Ruth Ann Linder led the ages 4 and 5 choir with helpers “shepherds,” we call them - Cyndi Sawchak, Catherine Gray, Aubrie Rickett, Sarah Sawchak, and
KayLee Swanger.
Dee Pinkley and Mark Koehler led the older choirs with shepherds Karen Loy, Norm Peterson,
Shawn Rausch, Kim Schwarzwalder, Carolyn Yannayon, Andrew Burgart, Steven LaGoy, and Reagan
Good.
Chimes for the older children were directed by Kathleen Wendling with Kristopher Kollar as pianist.
Mark Koehler led all the children in Creative Movement and Shawn Rausch and Ron Marenchin led
Music Games with the 1st and 2nd graders.
Older children also enjoyed Arts Exploration, with a different topic each day. Kirk Rader l ed an Artworks Tour, Dave Wolbert involved the children in Drum Circle, and Martha Buckner of the Ashl and
Symphony shared the Musical Instruments Petting Zoo.
Snacks were served by Sara and Jena Barrick. Special thanks to the registrars Wendy Anderson,
Sarah Anderson, Jane Burns, and Barb Renneker, who got the week off to a great start.
Thanks to Kathie Buchanan-Hogue & her Kitchen Crew for serving a wonderful picnic lunch on
Thursday after the concluding program.
The camp project was raising money for water for the folks in Flint, Michigan. $210 was raised,
equal to five store carts full of bottled water!

Happy End-of-Summer from Beacon!
Greetings to you all, and thank you for yet another year of support for our beloved Beacon
buddies and their families! The children have come so far together in their understanding of
God’s love for them and in their ability to share their love and caring with others. Our families
are very grateful for the homework help we provide their children. One parent shared how
pleased she was that her child was being so helpful and using so many pleas es and thank-yous
at home! This year we plan to direct the students’ thinking more outside of themselves through
some new outreach projects.
In this year of changes for Trinity, the Beacon program also has two new assistants! We are
very lucky to be able to keep Sally Carr who will continue as a part-time assistant. And we are
very excited to welcome Jocelyn Dickerson and Melissa Kyser who will be adding youthful energy and lots of new ideas to our leadership! Check out their mini-bios below.
We will be starting the year with 16 children. Thirteen are buddies from last year and three are
new. We can’t wait to see how
much they all have grown!

I am a lifelong resident of Ashland. I am
married to my high school sweetheart,
Brennen, and am a stay-at-home mom to our
4-year-old daughter Adalynn. I am a graduate of Ashland High School and Ohio State
Agricultural Technical Institute with dual
degrees in Horse Production Management
and Agricultural Business. In my free time I
enjoy hiking with my family around Ashland,
spending time with my niece and nephew,
and canning vegetables from my garden. I
am excited to be helping the children and
families in the Beacon Program!
I am thrilled to be a part of the Beacon After
School Program team! I was born and raised in the
Mansfield area. I graduated from Malone University
in 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Educational
Ministries. Since then, I have worked for the Boys
and Girls Club and Tiqvah Hand of Hope (a nonprofit after-school program in Canton, Ohio). I also
worked as the Director of Student Ministries at
Faith UMC near Ashland. I am married to my high
school sweetheart, Andrew, and we have one son,
Luke. I am passionate about helping children and
youth reach their fullest potential academically,
socially, and spiritually. I am looking forward to
serving the children and families of the Beacon
program.

Montessori Good Shepherd
Preschool and Kindergarten
Montessori Good Shepherd Preschool and Kindergarten is closing its enrollment until October 1. Families who wish to complete registration for openings in October may do so. Registration information is available in the
Church Office or by contacting Mrs. Sorenson (lyn@trinityashland,org).
Montessori Good Shepherd is a ministry of Trinity Lutheran Church to its
families with young children, and community families with young children desiring a strong ac ademic multi-aged setting with a Christian spiritual formation. The curriculum includes a Montess ori
multisensory individual approach to child development that builds character and independence in
the child. Many families have enjoyed the fellowship built within the group and the children mai ntain strong academic strengths throughout elementary years.
Children who enroll for kindergarten with Montessori Good Shepherd experience all established
standards and requirements choosing either a five day morning program or a three day full day
program. For more registration forms and brochures stop by the showcase outside the Montessori
room or the Church Office.

Hello P arents and Students!
Welcome to a new year… or at least a new school year! Don’t know about you, but love it when
school starts back up. T here is a new energy around us, new opportunities to engage in, and a
general feeling of new beginnings. Yes, this time of year can also be crazy busy and challenging;
but I love a challenge, and I am looking forw ard to this fall!
Our youth ministry is still very much in transition. Our summer team is off to college and we are
in the interviewing stage for a new Youth Director and an Associate Director. God is so good, and
has provided an incredible team of dedicated volunteers to keep the youth ministry moving forw ard
and thriving during this transition. We are so grateful for them!
P arents of any student entering 6th-12th grade should expect a packet in the mail with more
detailed information about the fall. If you don’t get one, please let us know so w e can make sure
your information is up to date in the church database!
As staff and volunteers are added, more events
will “pop up.” T o be sure you know about them,

Mosaic is open to all 6th-12th grade students
who want to dive deeper in their faith and
experience intentional discipleship in a small
group setting.
Middle School and High School students will be
together that day, but will be split up for the
rest of the year. Come on down to the youth
rooms from 9:30-10:30am.
**There will be no youth Sunday School on
September 4 as w e celebrate Labor Day.**
The game room will be open for snacks and
fellowship from 5:15-6pm. At 6pm, all
students will gather for a large group time of
w orship and learning, follow ed by small groups
until 7:30pm.

Catechism and Confirmation are an important part of a student’s faith journey.
Catechism is the affirmation of baptism; where a child becomes responsible for his or her
own faith. Students in grades 7 and 8 will meet monthly to explore Lutheran Heritage
and Biblical Foundations. At the end of our students’ 8th grade year, they will be invited
to confirm their faith by making a public testimony. This is known as “Confirmation” in
our church. If an 8th grade student has not participated in the past, he or she is welcome to join this year. We will work with the student to cover the material missed in the
previous year.
Catechism Orientation, Sunday, September 11 from 6-7pm in Jack’s Place
Parents and students please join us for an important orientation to review the
expectations for all students in Catechism. We will hand out the schedule for the year,
including dates for a weekend retreat in November.

All students in grades 6-12 are invited for an
afternoon of paintball! We will meet in the
youth rooms at 11:45am (right after church),
grab a quick lunch and drive down to Mt.
Gilead to SplatterPark. We have tickets for
free admission, free equipment rental & 100
free paintballs. The $15 will get you an additional 250 paintballs. Pick up a registration
form outside the youth office, or look for one
in the September mailing.
Students in 7-12 grade are invited to
be a part of our amazing High Praise
Youth Choir. High Praise performs at
various worship services and other
events throughout the year.
High Praise will rehearse on select
Wednesday evenings from 7:308:15pm.
The first rehearsal series for new
members will be on Wednesdays
from September 28—Oc tober 19.
