'AURA' Inauguration and Distinguished Lecture by Chief Justice of Bangladesh, 5th October 2015.
GNLU marched a step ahead in fostering bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh by inviting Hon'ble Justice
Surendra Kumar Sinha, the Chief Justice of Bangladesh to deliver a lecture on “Contribution of Judiciary of Bangladesh in
Strengthening the Rule of Law and Democracy”. The occasion was graced by the presence of Anandi Ben Patel, the Chief
Minister of Gujarat, a great academician and visionary who inaugurated the GNLU auditorium “AURA” signifying the power
of knowledge which will serve as the guiding light for the young legal minds of the country. The Guest of Honour Shri Pardip
Singh Jadeja, the Law Minister for the state of Gujarat pledged his full support in the development of GNLU as a world class
institution in the field of law.
DR. Bimal Patel, the Director of GNLU delivered the welcome address sharing a few anecdotes of the wonderful journey
GNLU has embarked upon 12 years ago in 2003.
It was followed by a virtual tour of the GNLU campus prepared by the talented students of the GNLU Digital Media.
The Law Minister, Shri Pradip Singh Jadeja took pride in playing an instrumental role in the birth of a National Law University
in Gujarat and applauded its students, acknowledging their contribution in making GNLU a forerunner in imparting legal
education in the country.
The Chief Minister, Anandi Ben Patel took out time from her busy schedule to deliver the inaugural address welcoming the
Hon'ble Chief Justice of Bangladesh to the revered land of Mahatma Gandhi. Sharing her experience as a teacher for three
decades, she emphasised on the need for inculcating the legal acumen in the students at the primary stage itself.
Hon'ble J. Surendra Kumar Sinha before proceeding to the lecture paid homage to the Indian army whose sacrifice cannot be
measured, in securing the liberation of Bangladesh. A reformist by nature he has introduced several legal reforms in
Bangladesh to strengthen the judiciary and make it immune from untoward influences. He enlightened the students about the
impediments faced by the Bangladesh legal system and their endeavour to achieve Rule of Law. Making an honorary mention
of M.C Setalvad, the first Attorney General of India and Nani Palkhiwala, a distinguished lawyer and jurist, he highlighted the
need for a practical realistic approach in today's lawyers to achieve heights of glory as their predecessors.
The lecture came to an end with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Thomas Mathhew, Registrar, GNLU and playing of the
national anthem of India and Bangladesh reminding us of the common heritage we share with our neighbour.
Ist National Interlinking Legal Services Committee's Annual Forum on “Access to Legal Services”,

The 1st successful National Interlinking Legal Services Committee's Annual Forum on “Access to Legal Services” was
organized on 3rd October – 4th October 2015 by the legal Services Committee of Gujarat National Law University. The
Legal Services Committee of various Universities came together on a common platform and work on specific agendas to

CCAL Judgment Analysis III, 5th September, 2015
The Centre for Constitutional and Administrative Law organized the Third Judgement Analysis Series on 5th September,
2015 with the object to ignite a discussion on the recent landmark judgement Shreya Singhal vs. Union of India rendered by
the apex court. The session was graced with the presence of a well known GNLU alumnus, Mr. Prateek Rath, currently
practising in the Karnataka High Court. The Supreme Court in this case struck down the draconian law under Section 66A
of the Information Technology Act, 2000 on grounds of encroachment of the Right to Freedom of Speech and Expression
guaranteed under Article 19(1)(a) of the Indian Constitution. At the end of the session he made an attempt to propel the
thoughts of the participants towards the future which lies ahead of the Shreya Singhal case, in striking down other similarly
notorious provisions in the Information Technology Act,2000 and the judicial activism shown by the apex court in light of
changing scenarios of technological development and advancement.

Late Kirit Raval Memorial Lecture, 13th September 2015
This year's edition of the Kirit Raval Memorial Lecture was organized on 13th of September 2015. Mr.Kirit Raval, an eminent
attorney who served as the Solicitor General of India was the co-chairperson of GNLU. The Attorney General delivered an
address on the topic of "Strengthening the Rule of Law through Judicious and Timely Use of Public Interest Litigation: Latest
Developments and Challenges” The event in the reminiscence of Shri Kirit Raval was attended by renowned judge C.K
Thakker, Raval Family and various other distinguished jurists and lawyers.
The event witnessed a great august gathering. The lecture was inaugurated by the Director Bimal N Patel who welcomed the
dignitaries and reminisced Kirit's Raval's efforts in inception of GNLU. The key note of the lecture was then delivered by the
Attorney General. He reminisced his association with Mr. Raval and talked about his shared moments with Mr. Raval. Shri.
Rohtagi then proceeded with the lecture talking about the rule of law as a required in the country. He enlightened the gathering
with PIL and its functionary and latest developments and challenges.
The lecture, divided into parts, placed emphasis on the role of the Supreme Court in the field of PIL. Shri Rohtagi through
various celebrated case-laws explained the role of PIL's during the period of time. A branded critic of the SC, pointed on some
of the shortcomings of the apex court, though maintaining the dignity of the SC. His arguments were practical and the
possible elucidation to the strengthening the rule of law in the country. The lecture also discussed about various contemporary
issues pertaining to the PIL's.
The GNLU Debate 2015 (3rd edition)
18th- 20th September 2015
The GNLU Debating Society was started in the year 2009 with an aim to promote, train and provides a platform for the
promotion of a debating culture among the students of GNLU. Since its inception the Debating Society has been one of the
most active clubs at GNLU, and progressed over the years by undertaking various initiatives to in furtherance of its objectives.
The debating society of GNLU regularly conducts orientation sessions, which introduce the students of GNLU to different
forms of debating, including the Parliamentary form of debate. The society has, further, launched a debating league, to
encourage debating through an intra- level tournament within members of the debating society as well. The society is further
responsible for the organization of the University's international Debating tournament, "The GNLU Debate".
'The GNLU Debate 2015', being one of the flag ship events of GNLU set a very high benchmark for all other debating
tournaments to follow. The Highlight of this year debate was the participation of two teams from Pakistan. This makes this
edition of the debate truly International.
Legal Training Course on Electricity Act, 2003, 19th -20th September, 2015.
The Gujarat National Law University under the auspices of the GNLU-GUVNL Research Fellowship on Energy Law and
Policy organized a two day Legal Training Course on Electricity Act, 2003 and Policy Guidelines from 19th -20th September,
2015. The inaugural function was marked with the presence of Mr. Saurabh Patel, Hon'ble Minister of Energy and
Petrochemicals, Government of Gujarat as the Chief Guest. The course was conducted by the leading minds on the Indian
power sector endeavouring to throw light on the issues and challenges in the Indian power sector. The course aimed at
enlightening the participants about the regulatory institutions, dispute settlement and other facets of the power market under
the Electricity Act,2003.
A panel discussion was held at the end of the course to engage the participants and the speaker in an informative and enriching
discussion on the contemporary issues plaguing the effective implementation of the Electricity Act. The resource persons for
the training Course on Electricity Act, 2003 and Policy Guidelines were Dr. P. K. Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary, Prime
Minster Office, Dr. Guruprasad Mohaptra, Joint Secretary, Commerce, Government of India (Author of Power Sector
Reforms), Mr. M. Ramchandran, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India, Mr. L. Chuaungo, Chairman and Managing
Director, GUVNL, Mr T Rout, Chief Legal, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr. S. K. Chatterjee, Central
Electricity Regulatory Commission (Author of Electricity Act, 2003 Commentary).
Certificate Course on International Taxation, 1- 7th September, 2015
GNLU, organized a course on International Taxation from 1st September-7th September, 2015. It was a rigorous course,
spanning three hours a day. The students were taught by Dr. Anjani Singh Tomar, the faculty for the Law of taxation in GNLU.
The visiting faculty for this course was Mr. Jigar Patel, Guest Faculty at ILNU. Mr. Jigar specialized in NRI Investments and
Taxation. Currently, he provides Wealth Management and taxation consulting services to clients across USA, UK, Middle East,
Asia, Africa, Australia and India.
Through this course, the students learnt about various double tax avoidance treaties, theories of taxation, and methods of
calculation and regulations for controlling the digressions. The students also did an in depth analysis of certain core issues of
International Taxation, as a part of assignment. It had armed the students with astute knowledge of taxation increasing their skill set.
The Athleta Legalus(ALA), 10th September 2015
GNLU Centre for Sports Law organized“ The Athleta Legalus(ALA)” , a one day
Quiz and Debate session on IPL and Law on 10th September 2015 in a proposition
to facilitate a serious discussion about this burgeoning issue.
The general theme running through both the rounds was IPL 6 and its surrounding
controversy. Hon'ble Mr. Justice Mukul Mudgal, former Chief Justice of Punjab and
Haryana High Court who had a pivotal role to play in unraveling the underlying
scandal in the IPL 6, adjudicated the final round of debate session along with Prof.
Bimal N Patel Director GNLU.
GNLU Moot on Securities and Investment Law - GMSIL 2015, 11-13 September, 2015
The power of the lawyer is in the uncertainty of the law.”-Jeremy Bentham.
The inaugural edition of the GNLU Moot on Securities and Investment Laws(GMSIL), was organized from 11-13 of
September, 2015 with 26 teams participating from across the country. Following the successful growth of the GNLU
International Moot Court Competition (GIMC) in scope, scale and repute through its five editions, GMSIL focused on the ever
changing Securities and Investment law landscape in India.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Dr. Bimal Patel, Director, GNLU; Dr. Thomas Mathew, Registrar, GNLU; Dr.
Mamta Biswal, Dean of Academic Affairs, GNLU and Mr. Girish R., GMSIL Faculty Convenor. The inaugural Edition moot
problem was based on the contemporary issue of insider trading.
The Valedictory Ceremony of the 1st Edition of Gujarat National Law University Moot on Securities and Investment Law,
2015 was graced by the presence of Mr. Ashish Chauhan, M.D. and CEO of Bombay Stock Exchange(BSE), who was the Guest
of Honour for the occasion and other dignitaries: Hon'ble (Mr.) Justice Akil Kureshi, Judge at the High Court of Gujarat; Mr.
Biswajit Bhattacharya, Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India and former Additional Solicitor General; Mr. Sandeep
Parekh, founder of FINSEC Law Advisors; Mr. Mihir Thakore, Senior Advocate at the Gujarat High Court; Ms. Dharmishta
Raval, Advocate at the Gujarat High Court and Member of the SEBI Advisory Committee on Mutual Funds, and Prof. (Dr.)
Bimal N. Patel, Director, GNLU.
Finals of the 1st Edition of GMSIL, 2015 was between “School of Law, Christ University, Bangalore”(representing the
Appellants) and ”Army Institute of Law, Mohali” (representing the Respondents). Following an enthralling round, School of
Law,Christ University,Bangalore emerged as the Winner of GMSIL 2015!
Congratulations to Christ University for winning the the inaugural edition of the GNLU Moot on Securities and Investment Law and Army Institute
of law for being the runners up.
First Aid Training Programme, 2nd September 2015
The two day First Aid Training Programme conducted by Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) in GNLU commenced on 2nd
September with resource person Mr. Karn Ragade emphasizing the importance of first aid and the vital role it plays in matters of
life and death. During the course students learnt various first aid protocols and procedures in theory and through demonstrations
and practicals on mannequins.
Research Methodology Workshop on Legal and Interdisciplinary Research - 7th August-13th August, 2015.
GNLU Department of Research organised a Research Methodology Workshop on Legal and Interdisciplinary Research on 7th
August-13th August, 2015. This workshop endeavored to make the participants aware of role of legal research in the
development of law. With those objectives, the workshop dealt with sources, categories and types of legal research. It focused on
legal research methods and tools, basic skill of identifying research problems, planning and executing legal research projects and
of appreciating the problems associated therewith.
Expert Resource Persons of the programme were well-experienced Academicians from India and also from abroad. To name a few were:

Research, Future prospects in legal research Module, Role of Statistics in Legal Research.
69th Independence Day Celebrations.
"Others might have forgotten, But never can I; The Flag of my country Furls very high."
On the eve of 69th Independence Day on 15th August 2015 Gujarat National Law University celebrated the 69th Independence
day in its campus with the Flag hoisting ceremony and other events in the presence of esteemed Director, Dr. Bimal N. Patel,
Registrar, Dr. Thomas Matthew, Faculty members, Staff and students. The Flag hoisting ceremony was followed by cultural
programmes which included the display of yoga by the students, singing of patriotic songs to awaken the patriotic fervour among
the audience, martial arts and karate. The event was then followed by the game of Kabaddi between the members of the staff and
students, it was indeed the most interesting event of the morning with the team of staff winning the game with a score of 25-21.
GLASS (GNLU Litigation Assistance & Support Scholarship)
In an attempt to incentivize and encourage students to pursue a career in litigation, Gujarat National Law University introduced GLASS (GNLU Litigation Assistance &
Support Scholarship). Under this 5 graduating students who opt to join Bar in any court across India will get support of Rs 7,500 per month for a period of 1 year. As many
of you would agree, brilliant litigation-spirited students, due to financial constraints, opt for other careers. Our judiciary, senior advocates and the country at large have been
appealing that graduates from premier national law universities should join bar and contribute to the overall quality of legal and judicial system.
Training workshop on "Young Women Social Entrepreneurship
Development" 31st August - 4th September 2015.
Training workshop on "Young Women Social Entrepreneurship Development",
was organized by the Centre for Law and Society in collaboration with the faculty for
Social Work at the University, from August 31st to September 4th 2015. the
workshop was sponsored by British Council India aimed to help empower young
women and foster the spirit of Social Entrepreneurship across the country. The
programme focused on skill development, nurturing creativity, innovation and social
change.
Mr. Ullas Marar, who is Senior Associate-Unconventiona|L at Villgro Innovation Foundation shared his views on the workshop and Social Entrepenurship. He promoted
social entrepreneurship with one of India's foremost social enterprise incubators. He manages Unconvention Speaker Series, and travels to various cities across India,
with the aim of inspiring and engaging early-stage social enterprises.
The first day began with an inaugural address by the Director of GNLU, Dr. Bimal N. Patel. This was followed by a series of inspirational lectures to highlight the
importance of social entrepreneurship. Distinguished luminaries in the field, Prof. Samapati Guha (Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, TISS Mumbai), Shri. Rajendra
Joshi (Director, Incube Ventures, Founder SAATH), Prof. Venkatesh Murthy (Convenor, Entrepreneurship cell, IIM Rohtak), Ms. Ruzan Khambhatta (A highly
successful women entrepreneur), Ms. Harsha Rajwanshi (Assistant Professor of law, GNLU) spoke on the importance of the workshop for Young Women and
encouraged participants to never give up on their aim. Additionally, this event also marked the inauguration of GNLU s newly constituted centre for Law and Society by
the Director. The valedictory ceremony was marked by the Guests of Honour, Prof. Dinesh Awasthi (Former Director, EDII, Ahmedabad), Prof. Ankur Sarin, and Mr.
Vishnu Swaminathan distributing certificates to the participants. The program concluded with Prof. A.N. Rao (Assistant Professor of Social Work, GNLU) who
delivered the vote of thanks.
GNLU Legal History Museum hosts “Africans in India: A Rediscovery” 10th August - 10th September, 2015
Gujarat National Law University and Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi organized an Exhibition Africans
in India: A Rediscovery from 10th August, 2015 to 10 September, 2015 at the India Legal History Museum, Gujarat National
Law University. The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture assisted the organizations in organizing the exhibition.
Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library located in Harlem, New York, is a research unit of
The New York Public Library system. . It is recognized as one of the leading institutions focusing exclusively on AfricanAmerican, African Diaspora, and African experiences.
The exhibition was made with a purpose to rediscover the importance of the African people in Indian History. They were brought
to India as slaves and went on to become the rulers of India. It was an attempt to trace their roots to Africa and further connect
them with India. The inaugural event began with a session of speeches highlighting the importance of Indian Legal History. The
introductory speech was by the director of GNLU, Dr. Bimal N. Patel. He emphasized on the need to study the Legal Heritage and
History for law students. It was followed by the address of the esteemed speaker Dr. Mangalam Swaminathan from the Indira
Gandhi Cente for arts, New Delhi. She highlighted the importance of Indian culture in the world. She said that it was the only
culture which had assimilated all people within it and had made them native to it. It was followed by a lecture from the guest of
honour, The Nawab of Sachin, His Highness Mr. H.H. Sidi Mahammed Reza Khan who is also an advocate in Surat for the past
27 years. He spoke about the importance of sustaining history and passing it on for the benefit of generations to come.
The Chief Guest, Dr. S.K. Nanda, IAS, Chairman and Managing Director of Gujarat State Chemicals and Fertilizers LTD. talked on
the importance of preserving History as it had a tendency of repeating itself. Thus, it is important for every person to learn from it.
On this occasion three MOUs were also signed between the Director of GNLU and the donors to the museum. The esteemed
donor Shrimati Usha M. Pandya donated Legal documents of princely states in British India. Mr. Joshua Aston enriched the
museum by donating the Cyrus Cylinder and a copy of the Magna Carta. Mrs. Shilpi Patel donated sculptures on stones.
Distinguished Business Leader Lecture Series (GCBPP) 7th August, 2015
GNLU Centre for Business Policy organized the first Distinguished Business Leader Lecture Series on 7th August, 2015
in Vitaan 2, GNLU.
Mr. Dharmesh Singhala, co-founder, Capital Novus delivered lecture on "Technology Innovation Impact on Global Legal
Practitioners". Mr. Dharmesh Shingala, Co-founder of the Capital Novus. Capital Novus, an endeavor started in the year
2002, the manoeuvre provides innovative, high-quality litigation technology and electronic discovery solutions to legal,
corporate, and government communities. The objective of the session was to make the students aware of the blend of the
legal aspect and the technology.
He emphasized on the technological based changes in the field of the law. He discussed on the opportunities of the
unexploited area of law which the young lawyers could explore by the use of the technology. Mr. Shingala laid stress upon
the electronically stored information which has changed the way of storing legal information's-from files documents to
virtually stored documents. He also explained with illustrations the associated advantages, risks and solutions of using the
virtually stored information.
Military Law and Practice Training Program, 26th July - 1st August
GNLU become the first Indian Law University to conduct programme on 'Military Law and Justice', and the 'Training
Programme on Military Laws and Practices' made headlines of the Ahmedabad English daily Newspaper 'DNA'.
In a country where 40% of the legal positions in armed forces are vacant, Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) become
the first law university in India to conduct training programmes for the defense forces. The varsity conducted a programme on
Military Law and Justice from July 26 to August 1 on the campus. Director of GNLU, Dr Bimal N Patel, who conceptualized
the programme, informed in his inaugural address that the institution will always be ready to provide its services by training
other stakeholders as well. The seven-day programme aimed to address the Indian military laws, Indian constitution and armed
forces, court-martial system and comparative practices of UK and USA Military Judicial System. The programme was
inaugurated by retired Lieutenant General DB Shekhatkar.
The participants for the programme included nine officers from the army, navy, air force, Indo-Tibetian border police and
Border Security Force. Apart from them, three post graduate students and 13 undergraduate students of GNLU also
participated in the programme. Experienced officers of the armed forces, judge advocate generals (JAG) and academicians
conducted sessions for the participants.
GNLU's 12th Foundation Day, 7th July 2015
The day started by a lecture by Mr. Tushar Mehta, Additional Solicitor General,
Government of India. The lecture began on a lighter note with Mr. Mehta joking
about lengthy lecture delivery and a promise to students to keep it as short as possible.
He talked about the importance of humor in legal education and how quick thinking
mattered. He gave real life examples of the wit and presence of mind of great
Lawyers and Judges like Lord Denning. He suggested the university to include a nonmarked course on humor in law on the lines of some universities of US and UK. It
would be beneficial to the students in law, a field in which public relations are of
utmost prominence and thereby a quality like a sense of humor mattered.
The lecture was followed by a Blood Donation camp organized by Legal Services
Committee of the Gujarat National Law University. The GNLU Legal Services
Committee had been set up by way of Section 4(k) of the Legal Service Authorities
Act, 1987 in consultation with the Bar Council of India. The camp was organized in
collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society, Ahmedabad Chapter. The Camp
broke all previous records and became the biggest blood donation camp ever in the
history of the Institution at 235 registrations and 170 donations. This was followed by
a prize distribution ceremony and cultural programme in the Evening.

GIBCLA Summer School 2015, 6-26th July 2015
In continuation to GNLU's academic tradition of excellence and
innovation and to take GNLU classrooms beyond national
boundaries, GNLU Indian Business & Commercial Laws Academy
(GIBCLA) offered its summer course on 'Indian Business &
Commercial Laws' for GIBCLA Summer School 2015 from July 6,
2015 to July 26, 2015. The GIBCLA Summer School 2015 provided a
unique opportunity for young and dynamic students of different
nationalities to intellectually explore the Indian legal businesscommercial environment and international laws regulating the
business and commercial activity.
The inauguration took place on July 6, 2015 at Gujarat National Law
University where Dr. Bimal N. Patel, Director, GNLU inaugurated the
summer school. In total there were 14 participants from India and
abroad in the GIBCLA. Four participants were from Radboud
University Nijmegen, Netherlands and a participant from Sarah
Lawrence College, New York, USA had been offered 100%
scholarship for the course by our respected Director Sir, Dr. Bimal N.
Patel. In addition to it, Five participants were from Government Law
College, Mumbai, two from MSU, Baroda, one from Mumbai
University and one from New Law College, Pune.

R.P.Anand Quiz on International law and Relations: September 16, 2015 The GNLU MUN Society organized the very first edition of: PROF. R. P. ANAND QUIZ
ON INTERNATIONAL LAW AND RELATIONS The quiz was focused on the topic “The Principles of International Law, Contemporary issues surrounding
International Law and on International Relations”.

GNLU also organized a 'Certificate Course in Yoga' from 16th of September, 2015 by Mr. Sugnesh Chudasama. The aim of the Course was to introduce Yoga in the daily
life of the students for an active, healthy, fit and enlightened feeling and a higher quality of life.

Centre for Constitutional and Administrative Law, CCAL organized Fourth Expert Lecture Series on 18 September, 2015 (Friday) on "An overview of The German
Constitution" where the students were addressed by Professor Dr. Stephen Hobe and were given many contemporary insights of the German Constitution.

Gujarat National Law University's Centre for Constitutional and Administrative Law (CCAL) organized a Certificate Course on “Expanding Horizons of Fundamental

related to Fundamental Rights. It also cultivated the ability to identify latent constitutional issues related to fundamental rights and also to scrutinize the contribution of
judiciary in interpreting the fundamental rights. The students were made to be able to demonstrate basic and up-to-date understanding of the fundamental rights in India.
