What is a Fuel Pressure Regulator?
EFI fuel pressure regulators come in various shapes and sizes but all have the
same purpose - to maintain a constant fuel pressure above the intake manifold
pressure. The difference in pressure between the fuel rail and intake manifold or
differential pressure across the injector should be maintained at a level to suit
optimum injector operation.

Why and when do you need to install one?

The installation of an aftermarket fuel pressure regulator allows for the adjustment of fuel pressure to suit larger aftermarket injectors and other engine
modifications. They are also necessary to regulate and flow increased volumes of
fuel pumped by high flow aftermarket fuel pumps.

Like all Turbosmart products, the T-Reg is a result of countless hours of
research, development and testing. T-Reg outflows most Fuel Pressure Regulators currently on the market and provides smoother fuel pressure delivery.
The T-Reg spring and valve have been designed using CFD software for stable
regulation and high fuel flow rates under load conditions from idle to full throttle.
Machined from 6262 T6 billet aluminium, the T-Regs are hand-assembled to
ensure a precision product.

reinforced Fluorosilicone diaphragm, Chrome Silicone

GATED BOOST CONTROLLER?
By far the easiest and most cost-effective way of controlling the amount
of pressure going to the wastegate is via a Gated Boost Control Valve.
All Turbosmart Gated Boost Controllers are manufactured from
high-grade brass and aluminium and are renowned for their easy
installation, operation and stability. The extensive range covers all
applications; from mild street-tuned engines, to purpose-built
race power plants.

WHY BUY A TURBOSMART WASTEGATE
Key design features to a superior wastegate are temperature and flow
capability. Turbosmart has successfully addressed these issues by
optimising valve lift and the flow path through the body. All Turbosmart
Wastegates incorporate a unique temperature isolation zone, and utilise the
most exotic alloys available on the market today. Turbosmart Wastegates are
guaranteed to outperform any other equivalent wastegate on the market!

Entry-level, compact wastegate.
Rated to an intermittent 850oC (1560oF). Features an investment cast stainless steel body,
machine finish, one-piece stainless steel billet
valve, Silicone Nomex diaphragm.
Supplied with a 7 and 10psi spring. Fully compatible with all Turbosmart Boost Controllers.
Big horsepower, high-flowing, high temperature wastegate. Rated to continuous 1000oC
(1830oF). Features an investment cast stainless steel body, anodised actuator, one-piece

When do you need
a fuel cut defender?
FUEL CUT
DEFENDERS
Most late model cars have in-built defence
mechanisms to guard against increases in
boost pressure. Such systems are important,
but can be an obstacle when increasing boost
pressure.
A Turbosmart FCD will allow boost pressure
to be increased above the factory level and
prevent momentary shutdown of the fuel
injection system.

Allows for an accurate increase in
the factory fuel cut-out level without
the need for cutting/splicing wires
or affecting off-boost conditions.
Suited to most turbo cars using a
MAP sensor.
Can be locked to prevent tampering.

Turbosmart Boost Controller.
The FCD3 alters the output of a factory 5V MAP
or AFM at an adjustable level to accurately raise
the factory fuel cut point.
Features LED indicators for easy setup.
Adjustable release feature ensures you retain
the safety of having a fuel cut to protect your
engine from over boosting.
Unique Clamping Slope Adjustment feature
enables the sensor signal to be clamped flat or
at another gradient to suit your application.
To be used in conjunction with a Turbosmart

unique two-piece construction with
an ergonomically -designed top
piece. The Oil Caps come in three

utilises two Type 1 BOVs, and an Ultra-Gate38.

QUESTIONS
Why do I need a Blow-off Valve (BOV)?
Blow-Off Valves eliminate compressor surge when changing gears. Excessive back pressure is created when the throttle is closed during gear
changes or deceleration, causing turbo cavitation. This is detrimental to
the life of the turbocharger. Fitting a BOV will substantially improve this
problem. Installing a BOV will also significantly reduce turbo spool-up
time. A substantial improvement in response from the turbo between
gearshifts and a quicker boost delivery will result in an increase in
torque at lower RPM.
If my car is automatic, should I still fit a Blow-off valve?
Yes, most benefits of a Blow-off valve can still be enjoyed, even if your
car is automatic

Can I fit a BOV onto a twin turbo engine?
Yes. Depending on the configuration of the intake plumbing and engine
capacity, you may need two Blow-off valves.
How do I increase a turbo-charged car’s horsepower?

How much can I increase my boost pressure by?
In general 10%-20% is safe on most engines, however for more accurate
information you should consult your local performance technician.
If I increase the boost, will I need a Fuel Cut Defender?
It is recommended that you fit a Fuel Cut Defender if you increase the
boost over the factory level. Fitting an FCD will prevent your car’s ECU
cutting the fuel once the factory boost pressure has been passed.
Can I use a Boost Controller on a turbo diesel car?
Yes, our Boost Controllers are currently being used in hundreds of turbo
diesel applications, including cars, 4WDs, light trucks, boats and even
tractors! For it to be effective however, the fuel delivery needs to be
increased.
What should I look for when buying a Blow-Off Valve?
Construction. BOVs should be made from hard-wearing and solid material, after all it’s going to be put under a lot of pressure and perform
many cycles. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the type of
material used. All Turbosmart BOVs are made from 6262 T9 Billet Aluminium, one of the hardest-wearing and toughest metals for the job.

Adjustment. As access to the BOV may be difficult, adjustment should
be easy and require no tooling. Tool-free adjustment is easier and more
precise. All Turbosmart BOVs feature a tool-free adjustment system.
Flow. The BOV must flow enough to eliminate compressor surge. With a
large inlet port (38.1mm), Turbosmart BOVs outflow most other BOVs on
the market.
Valve Seat. During the years of use a BOV will perform thousands of
cycles. It is important that the Valve Seat is strong enough to withstand
the wear and tear. Some BOVs use plastic seats or circlip piston retainers, both of which can eventually fail and drop foreign material into the
engine. All Turbosmart BOVs feature an integrated billet valve seat,
eliminating the possibility of a component failure.
Adapter Systems. A BOV must be fitted correctly in order to perform its
function. Check whether there are adapter kits available for your car.
Turbosmart supports all its BOVs with an extensive range of Universal
and Model-Specific Adapters.
What should I look for when buying a Wastegate?
Temperature rating. Check whether the wastegate has a manufacturer’s
temperature rating, it will help you in choosing the right wastegate for
your application. All Turbosmart wastegates feature a Unique Temperature Isolation zone and are clearly rated by temperature and application.

Flow. High valve lift and well-designed flow path are key features to
achieving superior boost curves.
Diaphragm. It is important that the diaphragm is able to withstand high
temperatures and thousands of cycles. Inferior material can deteriorate
with time and cause over-boosting. Turbosmart uses High Temperature
Silicone Nomex on all its wastegates.
Valve Construction. Commonly used two-piece welded valves can break
under pressure and high temperatures. All Turbosmart wastegates use
high strength, one-piece billet valves.
Adapter Systems and Spare Parts. A simple and reusable adapter
system is essential for quick and easy installation to a pre-existing or
factory turbo system. Turbosmart supports its wastegates with a range
of adapters and spare parts to suit most applications.

How a boost controller works
A turbocharger uses waste exhaust gases and the energy associated with this gas to drive a
turbine located after the exhaust manifold. The exhaust gases drive the turbine wheel that in turn
spins the compressor wheel compressing the intake air and forcing it into the intake creating
boost pressure.
To limit the amount of pressure or boost generated by the compressor most turbo chargers are
fitted with an internal wastegate. The wastegate is comprised of a wastegate actuator which is a
spring-loaded diaphragm and a wastegate valve or flap.
Changing the spring tension in the wastegate actuator can vary the boost pressure. However this
method of controlling the maximum boost pressure allows for only fixed changes in boost pressure. Instead of changing the springs, a more effective method of adjusting boost is to alter the
amount of pressure going to the wastegate. A Gated Boost Control Valve or an Electronic Boost
controller regulates the boost pressure going to the wastegate actuator.

latest project - Series 4 RX7 has been built to
compete in the IDRC Quick Class. The 13B rotary
turbo uses a Supersonic BOV and two UltraGates. A 60psi e-Boost controls the boost.

Connecting a Boost Tee
Wastegates - Facts and Fiction
Turbosmart Boost Tee is one of the simplest
products to install but surprisingly quite a
number of DIY enthusiasts get it wrong.
The most common installation mistake is
reversing the boost flow – or - installing the
Boost Tee back to front. The Boost Tee should
be mounted between the pressure source and
the wastegate actuator.
The boost flows from the pressure source to
the wastegate actuator and should correspond
with the arrow symbol on the face of the Boost
Tee as per the diagram below.
The more powerful the engine, the bigger the
wastegate you need.
This is one of the more popular misconceptions. Use this simple guide before setting out
to find the biggest wastegate you can afford.

Wastegates don’t really need to cope with
high temperatures.
Contrary to the popular belief, external
wastegates are usually mounted at the hottest
part of the exhaust. It’s the place where all
the exhaust gases meet, creating extra heat.
This combined with the late combustion of
unburnt fuel significantly raises the exhaust
temperature. Check the temperature rating
of the wastegate to make sure it’s suitable for
your application.
The larger the wastegate valve diameter,
the bigger the flow.
While the valve diameter is, without a doubt, an
important part of the flow rate, equally important, but often misunderstood, is the
importance of the valve travel. When comparing wastegates, don’t be guided only by
the valve size, check the amount of valve lift.
In most cases it’s more beneficial to have a
wastegate with a smaller valve and long valve
travel as this will give you a better control of
your turbo resulting in a smoother boost curve.
