Greetings to the Hiawatha School and Community,
Greetings to all and I hope that everyone is off to a great 2016. The holiday season is a wonderful time, but it is always refreshing and exciting to begin a new year. It is my pleasure to be
serving as your second Interim Superintendent for the 2015-2016 school year. My duties began
on Monday, January 4, 2016 and I will be serving you until the first day of July. I have enjoyed
my first month in the school district and have had the opportunity to meet many members of the
staff and student body. I have found the district to contain a pleasant, positive, and upbeat atmosphere. Additionally, your buildings and facilities are clean and well maintained, something
that is essential to providing our children a meaningful and positive educational experience. It
has always been my opinion that developing a positive school culture and climate is the first
step to providing our children an excellent school experience during their time with us. By implementing a culture of trust and credibility, we teach our students the value of developing mutual respect and the importance of building positive relationships with those around them.
These values will serve them well not only throughout their school years, but for the rest of their
lives as well. I have found District 426 to be a positive place and I pledge that we will continue
to build upon the many great things already in place.
As we move forward into the second half of our school year, our focus will continue to be on
student achievement. Teachers and administrators will continue their work on writing smart
goals, student learning objectives and setting targets in student achievement. We will continue
to be diligent in implementing all phases of the Performance Evaluation Review Act (P.E.R.A.)
to be effective during the 2016-2017 school year. In order for district staff to plan for continued
school improvement, please take note of the remaining early dismissal dates for the rest of the

Again, my thanks go out to the many people who have welcomed me to the school district over

Jr High Student of the Month Recognized
The November Junior High student of the month was Josue Rubio. He has been described
as hard working, intelligent, and an all-around fun guy to be around. Josue finds time to play
multiple sports at Hiawatha, including football and basketball. He has shown not only his
athleticism but also his leadership and teamwork abilities. In the classroom Josue always
has time to help his classmates in need while maintaining his high work ethic. Congratulation, Josue Rubio for being named the November Student of the month. Josue will be recognized with his picture on the student of the month wall and a $25 dollar monetary award
from the Alpine Bank of Kirkland. Great job Josue!
The December Junior High Student of the Month was Perla Gonzalez. She has been described as a very bright, energetic student who loves coming to school and her classes every
day. Her energy and positivity in the classroom carries over to her classmates who then become more engaged in classroom activities. Perla is always willing to not only help out her
fellow classmates, but her teachers and staff at Hiawatha. Perla is a great role model to all
of the students. Congratulations, Perla Gonzalez, for being named the December Student of
the Month. Perla will be recognized with her picture on the Student of the Month wall and a
$25 dollar monetary award from the Alpine Bank of Kirkland. Great job Perla!
The January Junior High Student of the Month was Lilly Marbutt. She has been described as
a joy and pleasure to have in class. She is always prepared, ready to learn, and comes to
class with a smile. Her hard work and dedication to her school work rubs off on her fellow
classmates, as her work ethic is an example to all at Hiawatha. Lilly is a great role model to
all of the students at Hiawatha. Congratulations, Lilly Marbutt, for being named the January
Student of the Month. Lilly will be recognized with her picture on the Student of the Month
wall and a $25 dollar monetary award from the Alpine Bank of Kirkland. Great job Lilly!
Friends of the Kirkland Library Donate Books
Friends of the Kirkland Public Library purchased new books for the students who endured the April 2015 tornado. They also donated money to our school’s library to purchase additional books for our library. A huge thank
you goes out to the Friends of the Kirkland Public Library for their generous donations.

IHSA Training Video on CPR Training
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has a brief training video on CPR. IHSA officials

Land of Smiles will be coming to the school on February 24 . It is an oral hygiene presentation
put on by Delta Dental, geared to children in pre-kindergarten through third grade. It features the
Tooth Wizard and Plaque Man.
The Smile Illinois/Mobile Dentists will be coming to our school again this year. On April 25th 2016,
Hiawatha Pre-K through 8th, will once again be participating in the Mobile Dentist Program. The
“Mobile Dentist” will be here to clean, screen and apply sealant and fluoride. Closer to the assigned date, an application and explanation of service and fees will be sent home with students in
Pre-K through 8th grade. If your child is in 9th through 12th grade, the form will be available in the
High School Office. No child will be turned away. Children on Medicaid and Chip are covered
100%. Private insurance is also accepted. For those students in grades K, 2nd and 6th, who will
need a mandatory dental exam and have not yet handed one in, this is a great opportunity to get it
done. Dental exams need to be turned in by May 15th 2016.

Kirkland Chamber of Commerce Art and Essay Contest Winners
Each year the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce sponsors
an Art and Essay Contest for grade K-8. Kindergarten
through 3rd grade create art projects while 4th through
8th grade write essays. Winners were recognized on
Saturday 12/12 at the Christmas in Kirkland event held
at the Alpine Bank. The community filled the bank to
listen to the Hiawatha Jazz Band, see Santa, take
horse wagon rides, mingle with friends and recognize
the winners of the contests. Each winner received a
cash prize. Art winners were Kindergarten: Mikayla
Ford, First Grade: Mika Drennon, Second Grade: Claire Bingaman, Third Grade: Nelly Delvalle. Essays winners
were 4th grade – Jordan Knasiak, 5th grade – Bryce Overton, 6th grade – Annalea Taylor, 7th grade – Emalee
Thompson, 8th grade – Alexis Brokaw. Congratulations to all who participated. Thank you to the Kirkland Chamber
of Commerce and Alpine Bank of Kirkland for putting on the nice event to recognize our students. Please remember all the Chamber does throughout the year!

Class of 2003!
Congratulations to the Class of 2003 team on their win at the
2nd Annual Hiawatha Alumni Basketball Tournament. Watch
the school website for news about next year’s tournament.
Thank you to all who played, watched and cheered and
helped work the event. Without all of you we couldn’t do it!
Kirkland Public Library News

Kirkland Public Library will be sponsoring two presentations in February by Northern Illinois University to be held at Hiawatha. One will be for the high school students and the second will be for the
junior high school students. Last year the NIU STEM Outreach Program offered three presentations to the grade school students entitled “It’s Not Magic, It’s Science”. These programs had fun
and exciting experiments for the students. This year’s programs for the older students will focus
more on the importance of STEM education in HS and college, and on how STEM careers are becoming more and more prevalent. It is not as demo-heavy as the shows for younger students, but
the presenter will work some humor and “wow factor” into it.
They say “wait until next year” . . . well, next year is here now!
Mark your calendar to join us on Wednesday, February 17th when the
Kirkland Public Library in cooperation with the Kirkland Historical Society presents “When the Cubs Came to Chicago 1860”.
The program will be at the Kirkland Historical Society, 309 South Fifth Street,
Kirkland, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

IL Youth Survey February 8th

Hiawatha CUSD 426 is working with the Center
for Prevention Research and Development at the
University of Illinois to conduct a survey of Illinois middle and high school students. The purpose of the Illinois Youth Survey is to better understand Illinois youth risk and protective behaviors as they related to student problems and academic success. Students in grades 8, 10 and
12 will be surveyed on Monday February 8th with
their School Counselors. Please see your students’ progress report for more information
about the Illinois Youth Survey.
Spring Sing

Happy New Year, from the elementary music room!
It seems like yesterday that we were finishing the
holiday season with the K-2 holiday concert, and
already we're planning our spring concert! On April
19, 2016, the 3-5th graders will be putting on their
Spring Sing at 7:00PM in the High School Gym. It will
be filled with singing, dancing, playing and more.
You will not want to miss it!
Fine Art Happenings at Hiawatha!
The Hiawatha theatre department will feature student directed
one acts on February 26th and 27th at 7pm. The shows feature
themes from the love of chocolate, dogs doing time in the city
pound, to being the last man on Earth. Tickets will be sold at
the door, $3 for adults and $2 for children and students. Senior
citizens 55 and older are free. We hope to see you there! Also
save the date for the spring musical happening April 15th-17th.

The Junior High is very excited to introduce to you this spring a
new ensemble. This semester, the music department is implementing a Junior High Jazz Band. Students will learn about jazz
music and culture, and will be featured on two concerts this
spring. We hope that you can share in their excitement.
Please also join us on May 3rd at 6:30pm for the Spring Ensemble Celebration. There is no cost to this concert, as it is to celebrate the success of the students 2nd semester, to conclude the
school year and to say good-bye to graduating seniors. This
concert will feature; Fifth Grade Band, Junior High Concert
Band, High School Wind Ensemble, Junior High Chorus, High
School Chorus, Junior High Jazz Band, and the High School
Jazz Band.
Finally, on May 12th there will be an All School Art show, as well
as a Java and Jazz evening. Please come attend the evening
by roaming the hallways, and enjoying a cup of joe with a side
of jazz. The jazz ensemble line up will feature; High School
Chorus, High School Jazz Band, and Junior High Jazz Band.
Hiawatha Agriculture News

The Basic Agriculture Science class is busy this semester as they dive into animal science. The students are currently raising
over 120 chicken eggs in incubators. They will certainly have their hands full when they hatch just in time for National FFA
Week!
The Horticulture class is learning how to grow beautiful flowers and vegetables. The greenhouse is warming up and the hydroponic tomatoes are getting started. Everyone is looking forward to the huge plant sale this spring!
Agribusiness students have begun exploring careers as they prepare their very first résumé. Mock interviews will take place
in February. Summer will be here before we know it!
Ag Mechanics students are working with carpentry as they create wood benches and Adirondack chairs. Students will soon
be exploring electricity when they install light switches and electrical outlets.
8th Grade agriculture students are also learning about horticulture. They have already started some interesting plants from
seed and will soon be propagating plants through cloning!

along well with his peers.
Students selected as Student of the Month will receive a $25 monetary award from Alpine Bank of Kirkland
and have their photo displayed on the “Student of the Month” wall in the hallway near the cafeteria.
Scripps National Spelling Bee 2016
On Tuesday, January 19, the school spelling bee took
place in the High School Auditorium. 5th-8th grade students completed a spelling bee in their classrooms.
This provided us with the top 16 spellers, 4 students
from each grade level.

Artist of the Month

Hiawatha’s art program is filled with lots of talent. The goal with each lesson and project that is taught in the art classes is to
provide students with the history/background of a certain technique, as well as develop the skills needed to successfully accomplish that technique. Students are provided with ample opportunities to develop their own drawing, painting and sculpting
skills while constantly seeking to achieve strong craftsmanship and compositional layout.
To honor students who demonstrate outstanding achievement in Art, the Fine Arts Boosters provide a $10 award to the winner
of Artist of the Month. Students are encouraged each month to submit their artwork to Mrs. Araujo to be voted on for the
Artist of the Month. All art students are welcome to submit any artwork created in class during the current school year. Students may submit as many artworks as they would like and can submit them as many times as they would like during the year
until they win; students can only win once in a school year. The artwork is voted on by the high school staff and the vote is
based on technical skill, craftsmanship and composition.
At the end of the school year, all Artists of the Month are then placed in a vote for Artist of the Year. This award is given at
the end-of-year Awards Ceremony in which the winner receives a gift of art supplies provided by the Fine Arts Boosters.

Lions Club Easter Egg Hunt
The Kirkland Lion’s Club will hold its annual Easter Egg
Hunt on Saturday, March 26th at 1:00 pm. There will be
prizes and candy-filled eggs galore. The fun starts
promptly at 1:00 on the football field. In case of bad
weather, we will hold the event in the gym.
