By the time auctioneer Lenny Broberg’s gavel came down for the last time, the twelve live auction items brought in more than $25,000. When added to ticket sales and the cumulative sales prices of more than 250 purses, handbags and other accessories donated by fashion designers, San Francisco retailers and celebrities, the event netted just under $100,000 to help low-income women with breast cancer. Thanks to Presenting Sponsor Kaiser Permanente and other corporate and individual underwriters, 100% of that amount goes directly to help BCEF clients! Led by our extraordinary This Old Bag event co-chairs, Dame Bella Farrow, DSJ and Hilary Newsom Callan, the host committee comprised of Beatrice Amblard, Wilkes Bashford, Amber Marie and Chris Bently, Harry Denton, Hon. Fiona Ma, District Attorney Kamala Harris, Elaine LaMastra, Carolyn Lee, Bahya Oumlil-Murad, Dr. Sheila Shahabi and Beth Townsend turned out a huge crowd to support the cause. Star items in the live auction included Sharon Stone’s Roberto Cavalli bag, Sharon Osbourne’s $10,000 Asprey of London tote and a very special gift from Bella Farrow: her Judith Leiber jewel-encrusted clutch complete with a matching tiara from Bella’s personal collection! Glamorous non-purse items in the live auction included tickets to the live taping of Ellen DeGeneres’ and Oprah Winfrey’s shows. Other fabulous donations came from America Ferrera, Julianne Moore, Olivia Wilde, Minnie Driver and many other celebrities. Not to be outshone by out-of-town stars, many of San Francisco’s own celebrities opened their closets for BCEF. Ann Getty donated an Hermes Birkin bag, a very rare and precious find in the handbag world. Other generous locals included Leah Garchik, Jo Schuman Silver, San Francisco’s First Lady Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and Sharon McNight as well as Isabel Allende and Beatrice Amblard who both made handbags especially for This Old Bag. BCEF’s event steering committee members outdid themselves this year, especially in such a difficult fundraising climate. Neil Figurelli and Bahya Oumlil-Murad chaired the committee, which included bag donation procurers Joanie Juster, Dorothy Compeau and Veronica LaBeau. Event expert Arianne Nichol, public relations maven Elyssa Thorp, Ilana Minkoff, CLIFT employees Stacy Aldrich and Erin Sedilko, and BCEF staff Mike Smith and P Tyrone Smith rounded out the hard-working team. The men of BCEF also did their part, and our special thanks go to Lance Brittain, Christian Dumais and Clinton English for their late-night help. Special thanks to media sponsor 7x7 and major sponsors W San Francisco, Clift, Bloomingdale’s, brandhabit. com, Medjool, Pacific Union Real Estate Agent’s Community Fund, and Wells Fargo. In addition to sponsors, a major event like this would not be possible without nearly 100 volunteers which include BCEF supporters, Best Buy employees and San Francisco Junior League members. Thank you to everyone who helped raise these vital funds for our clients! The 21st Annual AEF Holiday Dinner is right around the corner! For the past two decades a dedicated group of AEF volunteers has worked magic each Christmas Eve in the Green Room of the War Memorial Veterans Building to treat more than 1,200 people with HIV/AIDS, their families and friends to a lavish sit-down feast featuring 80 turkeys, 300 pounds of mashed potatoes, 48 gallons of cranberry sauce, 300 pounds of stuffing and a wide array of delectable desserts, not to mention non-stop entertainment, fabulously festive decorations and even Santa Claus. This year’s production team, led by Neil Figurelli, includes Cindy Roberts, Terry Irvin, Randy Schiller, Gavin Middleton, Glennon Sutter and Stanley Wong, will be assisted by over 200 volunteers. Our generous underwriters this year include The Richard & Rhoda Goldman Fund, The Eli and Mae Rosen Foundation and Bon Appetit Management Company. Client Stories From the President Cynthia’s Hester, Board President Change is Certain As we close the busiest part of our 2008 fundraising season, I am acutely aware of the difference a year can make. Last year we hit two milestones with AEF and BCEF and the future looked hopeful. This year things look very different as we face economic challenges at the local, state and national levels and a historical presidential election. With this level of change we are fortunate to have the support of our major donors and supporters. BCEF hosted another successful “This Old Bag” at W San Francisco, raising nearly $100,000 for clients disabled by breast cancer. Thanks to the generous financial support of our presenting and corporate sponsors, all of the proceeds from the event will go directly to our clients. My thanks and appreciation to the AEF/BCEF staff, board, host and steering committees as well as the hundreds of volunteers for an outstanding job. We appreciate your support and the countless hours you each put in to make this year a huge success. THANK YOU! Now more than at any other time in our recent history our ability to OUR COMMUNITY NEVER STOPS GIVING 03.19.08 CAV Wine Bar Women’s History Month Event Thanks to Pamela Busch and Michael Lamnia, owners of CAV Wine Bar and Kitchen, who raised over $600 for BCEF at their Women’s History Month Event. More info: www.cavwinebar.com provide consistent client services is critical. Our clients are feeling the effects of the economic downturn, including increasing prices for food, gas and basic services. The need will continue to increase and it is events like TOB that will ensure we are able to support clients when they need it most. We have also had changes in the staff and board personnel. The AEF/BCEF family is happy to welcome two new staff members, Joe Garcia and Madelyn Stone. We are also delighted to welcome to the board of directors Susannah Dunlap, formerly BCEF's Program Director. Amidst all the event activity, the board and staff also made time for contemplation, long-term planning, and strategic thinking at the annual AEF/BCEF retreat. In the seclusion of the Santa Cruz Mountains for a long weekend the board and staff took time to reflect on the achievements of 2008 and set the direction for the organization in 2009. On behalf of the AEF/BCEF board and staff, I extend our deep appreciation and thanks to each of you for your continued support of the work we do on behalf of our clients. 09.06.08 San Francisco Leather Daddy’s Boy XXVI Contest San Francisco Leather Daddies and Leather Daddy’s Boys have been raising funds for AEF for more than 25 years! Following in that great tradition, contestants Carl Anderson, Brian Duke and Carlos Rodriguez raised $1500 for AEF during the 26th annual Leather Daddy’s Boy contest at the Eagle Tavern. Congratulations to Carl Anderson who took the title. Our gratitude also goes to Leather Daddies Glen Tanking, Ray Middling and everyone who keeps this important tradition alive. More info: www.satyrsmc.org H2H2 Annette David Annette was referred to BCEF by Chinese Community Health Center near Christmas 2006 with a serious medical crisis. She was living with a metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. Annette’s radiation treatments had been stopped because her teeth and gums were getting severely damaged by the treatment, creating open wounds in her mouth and cracking her teeth. Her doctor told Annette that she would need to stop her lifeextending treatments until extensive dental work could be completed. Annette lives on a small pension from her union warehouse job, had no dental insurance and was unable to afford dental care. BCEF contacted a local dentist who agreed to perform the work quickly and at cost. BCEF prepaid her dental bill and Annette began her dentistry in the New Year. She was able to return to her treatment regimen in mid-January. David came to AEF last November. He stopped working as his health declined, and, with help from Positive Resource Center, he successfully applied for short-term California State Disability income. After enduring a period with no income whatsoever (during which time he borrowed from friends and went into debt) he received a large retroactive payment for the period when he wasn’t working. He has been living in Section 8 housing and his rent had been fixed as a percentage of his income. But when he received his retroactive payment from State Disability, the Housing Authority retroactively recalculated his prior income and raised his rent, which essentially cleaned him out financially. His health continued to decline and he had a short period of hospitalization. His application for permanent Social Security had not yet been approved, so he was able to pay off his back debts. AEF’s grant paid his back rent and covered his utilities so he could maintain his housing until his permanent Social Security assistance started the following month. 09.07.08 Country Western Dance-a-thon The Bare Chest Calendar Men and Sundance Saloon teamed up again for this second annual country music fundraising event. Special thanks to BJ Patnode who led this collaborative effort which raised over $15,000 for AIDS Emergency Fund and Positive Resource Center. More info: www.sundancesaloon.org 09.14.08 Tighty Whitey Car Wash The 2009 Bare Chest Calendar Men stripped down do the bare necessities to wash cars in the Castro. DJ David Hawthorne spun the tunes all afternoon as the Men raised more than $2000! Thanks to Mr. July 2009, Coop Anderson, for all his hard work getting this event to float! 09.13.08 Carlos Medal Runs for Abzolute Grand Duke Congratulations to Carlos Medal (aka Mama’s Mijo) who was crowned Abzolute Grand Duke. His campaign, which kicked off at Marlena’s Bar, featured local entertainers, pizza and a great raffle raised more than $500 for AEF! Komen Race for the Cure for their ongoing support of BCEF and other local organizations in their battle against breast cancer. Our friends at Komen raised almost $1 million in this year’s race! Congratulations! More information: www.sfkomen.org Academy of Friends Selects AEF Donor Profile Bill Sanderson and AndyWysocki Several years ago, Bill and Andy founded bigmuscle.com and various other websites, as a hobby, to help build a virtual community for gay men to meet and socialize. As their hobby grew into a full-time labor of love, they helped members of that online world contribute to the AIDS community through their support of AEF. Bill and Andy have been generous donors and sponsors of the Bare Chest Calendar since 2004. In addition to their personal contributions to AEF through the Calendar, the men have also selected AEF as the beneficiary of their annual “member meet and greet” event during Folsom Street Fair weekend. By designating 100% of the door charge to AEF, Bill and Andy’s last four meet and greet events have netted more than $30,000 for AEF clients. Through this event, Bill and Andy are doing something that’s even more important than raising money: they are introducing the next generation of gay men to charitable giving and educating people about the need to contribute to the cause. Their recent relocation to Palm Springs has not dampened their enthusiasm for their favorite San Francisco charity. They are already planning ways to raise even more money for our clients in need next year. In these tough times, the world needs more people like Bill and Andy. We’re glad we have them! Thank you, guys! 09.21.08 09.23.08 Mama’s Leather Walk Each year we are grateful that Mama Sandy Reinhardt and her Family raise money for AEF and BCEF through the annual Leather Walk, the leather/fetish community’s three mile walk from Castro, through South of Market, ending up at the Eagle Tavern. This year Mama's Family raised over $22,000. More info: www.mamasfamily.org Medjool Rooftop Handbag Preview Handbag mavens flocked to the fabulous rooftop patio of Medjool Restaurant to get a sneak peak at some of the most coveted handbags that were to be auctioned at This Old Bag. This year’s event featured educational live art, fire performances, a fashion show, culinary delights and innovative music at 111 Minna. More info: www.beats4boobs.org Madelyn Stone, BCEF Program Manager Every Penny Counts Day Who’s That Fresh Face? Make Change Recently, we sat down with Madelyn Stone, B C E F ’s n e w l y hired program manager. Her first day of employment is November 3 and she steps into the very large shoes left by Susannah Dunlap who has moved on to other career challenges but who remains active as a board member of AEF/ BCEF. Rather than recite Madelyn’s many accomplishments and interests, we decided to let her introduce herself in her own words: “I am originally from New York and have lived in Boston and Ohio. I camped cross-country one summer to California and stayed. After jobs in medical research (genetics) and teaching (biology) I have focused on community health for the past 20 years. For ten years I was at East Bay Community Recovery Project as Director of the Health Division, a program for high-risk and HIVpositive people with substance abuse and/or mental health issues. I was very involved with community collaborations and served on the HIV/ AIDS Planning Council for Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. At the Center for Applied Local Research I helped diverse projects and populations secure funding from foundations, corporations, federal, state and local governments, including grants for HIV/AIDS services, domestic violence shelters, substance abuse treatment, Latino and African American health programs, and women’s services. Most recently I was the administrator for a CDC grant to the State of California for Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention. My volunteer positions have included San Francisco Sex Information and Planned Parenthood. Having been a violin player in my youth, I love going to the SF Symphony and volunteering for the New Century Chamber Orchestra. I enjoy traveling, nature and outdoor activities such as hiking, cross country skiing, and bird watching. My husband and I just got a 2-person kayak and have been exploring lakes, rivers and the bay. My husband Tony is the Controller for an architectural firm and is originally from England. He is passionate about soccer and river rafting. We have a daughter, Alyssa, who is an aspiring opera singer and is presently at the San Francisco Conservatory in a post-graduate program, as well as working with the SF Opera in the schools program and performing locally. I am extremely happy to be joining the AEF/BCEF family. I have long known about their wonderful efforts from my work in the AIDS and health fields. I hope to expand the range of BCEF services to benefit more people in need of urgent assistance.” Once again, students throughout the Bay Area are proving they have a heart by supporting AEF’s Every Penny Counts campaign, sponsored by Wells Fargo. Schools are already hard at work collecting pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars, competing among classes and in friendly rivalry against other schools to see who can raise the most funds for our clients. AEF volunteers Lance Brittain and Paul Miller are spearheading this year’s school recruitment campaign along with Development Manager Joanie Juster. The campaign will culminate in a festive celebration at the Wells Fargo History Museum on February 13, 2009.
